Elephant Escapes Sanctuary, Runs Loose In New York

Fritha the elephant looked rather pleased with her late-night adventure.

An elephant in the state of New York, USA, recently decided to leave her sanctuary and explore the world outside. However, the mischievous escapee was soon escorted back home by the police and a sanctuary employee.

New York State Police said they received a call about 11.35 pm on Sunday about an elephant wandering loose on a road in Westtown, Orange County. They arrived at the scene to find Fritha – a 44-year-old elephant that had escaped from Amanda Brook’s sanctuary.

According to ABC News, Fritha had made her first stop at a 3-ton pile of hay and enjoyed a snack before continuing on her late-night adventure.

Police say they contacted sanctuary employees, who were then able to coax Fritha back home. Their post about the incident has gone viral on Facebook with over 1,000 ‘shares’ and hundreds of comments.

The owner of the sanctuary told ABC News that Fritha was able to escape due to human error.

“She has an electric fence that keeps her contained, and just human error, they forgot to flip her switch on and it makes a clicking noise and elephants are very, very smart and she knows that clicking noise wasn’t on.”

Police say Fritha was brought to the USA from Vietnam after she was burned by napalm during the Vietnam War.

Amazon Picks New York City And Virginia For $5 Billion New Headquarters

A building in Virginia that Amazon is considering as part of its new headquarters. (Reuters)

Washington:

Amazon announced Tuesday it would split its “second headquarters” between New York City and northern Virginia, investing some $5 billion in the two locations for the US online giant.

“These two locations will allow us to attract world-class talent that will help us to continue inventing for customers for years to come,” Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

The announcement comes after a yearlong search and competition from dozens of North American cities seeking the estimated 50,000 jobs that will be created with the new headquarters, which had been dubbed “HQ2.”

Amazon selected the Long Island City neighborhood in the New York borough of Queens, across the East River from Manhattan, and the Crystal City section of Arlington, across the Potomac from the US capital Washington.

These will be new headquarters with equivalent status to Amazon’s home in Seattle, Washington.

Empire State Building, New York Lights Up In Orange To Celebrate Diwali 2018

Happy Diwali 2018: This was the first time that Diwali celebration lit up the Empire State Building

New York:

For the first time, the iconic Empire State Building was lit orange in celebration of Diwali. The world famous structure turned orange on Wednesday night as Indians across the world celebrated the festival of lights. The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), the largest non-profit umbrella organisation in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut of the Indian community, lit up the monument in a special ceremony.

It was organised by the FIA in cooperation with the Empire State Realty Trust and attended by key members of the Indian diaspora. A special dance performance and cultural show was also presented on the occasion.

Federation of Indian Associations President Srujal Parikh said this was the first time that Diwali celebration lit up the iconic building and was “witnessed by thousands of people, including tourists from all over the world.”

At the November 7 ceremony, Miss America 2014 Nina Devuluri and popular singer Jay Sean along with Srujal Parikh flipped the switch to turn on the orange lights on top of the Empire State Building.

The Empire State Realty Trust or ESRT and the FIA have been illuminating the Empire State Building in August every year in the colours of the Indian tricolour – orange, white and green – for the past two decades to mark India’s Independence Day.

The FIA said such gestures by the ESRT help in spreading the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudeva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) and also demonstrates a great harmony in spirit and deeds between people of the world’s largest and oldest democracies.

For Srujal Parikh, that was the central message when he organised the India Day parade this year, bringing together for the first time communities from other South Asian and Caribbean nations.

Inside Sonali Bendre’s ‘Unconventional’ Diwali In New York With Husband And Son

New Delhi:

Sonali Bendre’s husband Goldie Behl and their son Ranveer joined the actress in New York to celebrate Diwali together. Sonali, who is undergoing cancer treatment there, shared a set of pictures from their ‘unconventional’ Diwali and posted details about the way they celebrated the festival. “It was quite an unconventional one. We didn’t have Indian clothes, had a small puja, but it was all heart,” she wrote. In the pictures, we see the family praying to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi idols. For the prasad, they offered a bowl of gulab jamun and dry fruits. Inside Sonali Bendre and Goldie Behl’s Diwali In New York.

Sonali Bendre was diagnosed with cancer in July and since then she has been in New York for the treatment. She has chronicled her fight with cancer with some inspiring posts on Instagram. She has also written about her high and low moments while battling cancer.

Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them. There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I’ve received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful. I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me.

From the moment he was born 12 years, 11 months and 8 days ago, my amazing @rockbehl took ownership of my heart. From then on, his happiness and wellbeing have been the centre of anything @goldiebehl and I ever did. And so, when the Big C reared its ugly head, our biggest dilemma was what and how we were going to tell him. As much as we wanted to protect him, we knew it was important to tell him the full facts. We’ve always been open and honest with him and this time it wasn’t going to be different. He took the news so maturely… and instantly became a source of strength and positivity for me. In some situations now, he even reverses roles and takes on being the parent, reminding me of things I need to do! I believe that it’s imperative to keep kids involved in a situation like this. They are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. It’s important to spend time with them and include them, rather than make them wait on the side-lines, not being told yet instinctively knowing everything. In our effort to protect them from the pain and realities of life, we might end up doing the opposite. I’m spending time with Ranveer right now, while he’s on summer vacation. His madness and shenanigans help me #SwitchOnTheSunshine. And today, we derive strength from each other #OneDayAtATime

She is also keeping her book club up and running. Sonali Bendre started a digital book club on Facebook last year. After she moved to the US, her friends Dia Mirza, Sussanne Khan and Gayatri Joshi took over the club for her. In August, they organised for a conversation as part of Sonali’s Book Club, which was also live streamed on her Facebook profile.

When in New York, Sonali also caught up with actor Rishi Kapoor, who is also in the US for medical treatment. She also met Priyanka Chopra and attended her bridal shower, along with Neetu Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor’s wife.

Actor Alec Baldwin Charged In New York For Punching Man Over Parking Dispute

Alec Baldwin was charged with assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree

New York:

Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin was arrested and charged with assault on Friday after allegedly punching a 49-year-old man in the face during a New York parking dispute, police said.

The 60-year-old, who has famously impersonated President Donald Trump and who lives in downtown Manhattan with his second wife and their four young children, was arrested in Greenwich Village.

“Police got a call around 1:30 pm (1730 GMT) regarding an assault in progress. When we got there, we discovered that it looked like two individuals were fighting over a parking spot,” a spokeswoman said.

The younger man had already parked his vehicle and was attempting to purchase a parking ticket, when he got into a dispute with Baldwin, “who then punched him in the face,” the officer said.

She said the unnamed man was taken to hospital in a “stable” condition, while Baldwin was in custody.

He was subsequently charged with assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, and ordered to appear in court on November 26, police said.

Baldwin is well known for his hot temper and for impersonating Trump on satirical US television show “Saturday Night Live.” The Oscar nominee recently launched a Sunday night talk show on ABC television.

In 2014, he was detained by New York police for riding his bicycle the wrong way down a street.

In late 2013, NBC scrapped his late-night chat show after he allegedly subjected a photographer to a homophobic slur outside his apartment on the day that a Canadian actress convicted of stalking him was jailed.

In a subsequent profanity-laden article in New York Magazine, the actor said he was finished with public life and that the Big Apple no longer offered his then baby daughter a “normal” life.

The near 5,300-word rant denied allegations that he insulted gays and lashed out furiously against the media, the city where he has lived since 1979, and US public life in general.

Despite that February 2014 article, the actor still lives in Manhattan with second wife Hilaria. The couple have four young children together.

His anger made headlines as long ago as 2007, when he left a notorious message for his then 11-year-old daughter with first wife Kim Basinger, calling her a “rude, thoughtless little pig.”

#NewRestaurantAlert: From New York To Khan Market: Baar Baar Makes Its India Debut

Highlights

  • Khan Market is the latest recipient of Chef Sujan’s culinary vision
  • This new place in Khan Market is making Delhi drool
  • The restaurant offers a wide variety of modern Indian food

Baar Baar by Chef Sujan Sarkar is now open at the very posh Khan Market in New Delhi. The long-term pop-up is all set to serve up the same experience it has been dishing out over the last year or so to the people of New York who have lapped up Chef Sujan’s approach to modern Indian dining. In fact, it is perhaps for the first time that a stand-alone restaurant is launching in India after having tasted success abroad. In recent times, we have seen the reverse happen more often; an Indian restaurant first gains popularity locally, only to open its doors to customers in another country later.

The last two restaurants by Chef Sujan – Rooh In San Francisco and Baar Baar in NYC – have been doing extremely well, and given that both cities are tough markets for new restaurants to crack, this is quite an achievement. Rooh is a fine dining restaurant and opened first, followed by Baar Baar in New York that offers fine food in a relaxed way.

Khan Market is the latest recipient of Chef Sujan’s culinary vision. The restaurant is spread over two levels and offers a wide variety of modern Indian food.

Indian food is very complex but not complicated. It’s free-flowing and draws in a lot of flavour from the cook’s own experiences. There can be a set recipe to create a European Hollandaise sauce but not for Butter Chicken. Every restaurant/chef will have their own way. I don’t want to change Indian food, or change the flavours. I also don’t want to serve home-cooked food. But when I serve Butter Chicken I don’t add colour or sugar to it. I draw inspiration from my European and French cuisine experience and add roasted red pepper for colour and sweetness”.

Khan Market is the latest recipient of Chef Sujan Sarkar’s culinary vision

A large chunk of the menu here is a made up of hits from Baar Baar, NYC. The rest is done specially for the Delhi market. “I don’t want to duplicate everything because then I will not think like a local”, says Chef Sujan. He is keen to use locally available, fresh and fine quality ingredients to create food that you can keep coming back to.

Armed with the success of his other restaurants, Chef Sujan seems to be on a path to create yet another signature gastro-bar, one that boasts of fine food, exquisite cocktails amidst a carefully crafted, vibrant ambience.

The pop-up is open for 6 months and is open 5pm onwards.

Bodies Of 2 Fairfax Sisters Found Duct-Taped Together On New York River Bank

New York City Police had tweeted their sketches to identify these two female sisters.

New York, United States:

Police in New York searched Tuesday for clues to what, or who, killed two sisters whose bodies were found duct-taped together on the banks of the Hudson River in Manhattan.

The two young women, identified as Rotana Farea, 22, and her sister Tala, 16, were found on the banks of the Hudson last week with no visible signs of trauma, dressed all in black, with fur-trimmed coat collars, and bound together at the ankles and waist by duct tape.

New York and Arab media said the sisters, who had run away from home before, were of Saudi origin but their family was living in Fairfax, Virginia.

The Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment on the reports. The young women’s bodies were being held by the New York medical examiner pending an autopsy.

Tala had been reported missing to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on August 24, the New York Daily News said. But the missing child report was withdrawn after it was claimed she was living with her elder sister in New York City.

Police are considering whether the sisters died as part of a suicide pact, possibly jumping from the George Washington bridge some six miles (10 kilometers) north of where their bodies were found.

But investigators have not ruled out that the sisters were murdered.

The Hudson River separates New York from New Jersey, and police were scouring the river banks to see if they can establish where the sisters entered the water.

Apple’s iPad, Mac Launch Event: Live Updates From New York

Apple’s second big event of 2018 is being held in New York and it will begin at 7.30 pm IST. We expect the company to launch new iPads and Macs, and perhaps one or two surprises. This event is expected to showcase new versions of certain Apple products such as the Mac Mini, whose update has been a long time coming. As far as iPhones go, there isn’t going to be any new announcement in all likelihood. Although, Apple might just mention that iOS 12.1’s release is scheduled after the event, which will enable dual-SIM functionality on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR

The most important announcements from this Apple event will vary based on your interests. For some enthusiasts, it is going to be any updates to Mac hardware, while for others, it will be the iPad refresh. The iPad Pro is expected to get a bezel-free design, in line with the iPhone X series. The iPad Pro may also see the removal of the home button and a switch to USB Type-C port instead of Apple’s Lightning connector. On the Mac side of things, it’s been over a year since we last saw a major update to the 12-inch MacBook and the MacBook Air, so those could get much-needed upgrades. We could also see an update for the long-ignored Mac Mini, which is a portable desktop computer that Apple makes, in case you had forgotten about it. Apple will live stream the event on its website but this stream will most likely work only on Safari browser on iOS and Mac devices, and Microsoft Edge browser on Windows 10. Apple may also stream the event live via Twitter, but that’s not confirmed yet.

On the professional side of things, Apple could announce an upgrade to the iMac Pro and iMac lineup of desktop computers, and MacBook Pro laptops as well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the Mac Pro server-grade desktop computer will see an upgrade just yet. We’ll be bringing you all the live updates right here, so stay tuned.
