Hyundai Styx Subcompact SUV World Debut In April at New York Show

The Korean carmakers Vitara Brezza rival so far known as the QXI is now confirmed as being called the Hyundai Styx. It will make its debut in mid-April, and is now being positioned as Hyundais next big global volumes model.

The Hyundai Styx wil go up against the likes of the Vitara Brezza, Nexon and the XUV300

The much awaited subcompact SUV Hyundai Styx, will make its global premiere on April 17 2019 at the New York International Auto Show in New York City, USA. Sources within Hyundai Motor Europe have confirmed to carandbike that the Korean company’s next big global model will in fact be named Styx. In some markets it may have a different name, though the global model will be named the Hyundai Styx. The car will be positioned below the Creta or Kona depending on the region. It will have multiple powertrain options ranging from a 1.2 petrol to a 1.5 diesel. Gearbox options will also vary, including a torque-convertor automatic for the US market, and an AMT for India. It will be a first for Hyundai to introduce such a compact car for the US. The Styx is based on the same platform that spawns the Grand i10 and Xcent – and is likely to also give us a compact MPV for India, Korea and Europe, in 2020. Kia will also use the same for its own subcompact SUV that will come to global markets by 2020.

The Hyundai Styx will make its world debut at the New York Motor Show

The Hyundai Styx has been previously seen as an early concept shown at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo – though in styling terms the new car is nothing like it. Codenamed the QXI, the new Styx has also been caught testing in India and overseas. India is the key development market for the Styx – even though it will be sold in multiple geographies. It is expected to be made in India, Turkey and South Korea. The name Styx comes from Greek mythology, where it is used for both a mythical river and the goddess it is named after. Achilles was famously dipped into the river Styx and that is what made him invulnerable. In India the car will need to stand up and be invulnerable to the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and upcoming Mahindra XUV 300.

165045so The Hyundai Styx will now likely come to India only after April 2019

Hyundai is expected to load the Styx with multiple airbags, a sunroof, large touchscreen infotainment, autonomous braking, as well as flexible interior seating and cargo options. The Hyundai Styx is expected to also bring features like reverse sensors and camera, keyless entry and smartphone connectivity as standard to the segment. Dual airbags and ABS are also expected to be standard, though stability control or ESC is likely to be optional or only available at the top end, along with other features like active cruise control and hill descent assistance. An electric or EV version of the Styx is also expected to debut in 2020, though that is unlikely to make it to India.

The launch of the Styx in India was expected to follow the pattern Hyundai exhibited with the i20 – which meant a launch here ahead of the global debut. But given the capacity issues and the global importance being put on this model, the Styx will now likely come to us only after the April unveil in New York, though pre-bookings are expected to begin by the first week of the same month. In pricing terms expect the Hyundai Styx to be positioned between the i20 and Creta in India. It will likely result in some cannibalisation with the Verna or even the Creta itself. But Hyundai hopes to achieve significant volumes with the car, both in India and worldwide.

Flash Mob In New York Dance To Ranveer Singh And Sara Ali Khan’s Aankh Marey. Video Is Viral

New Delhi:

Aankh Marey song, from Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan’s Simmba, was performed in the US by a flash mob to cheers from the crowd. Dancers from New York-based Bollywood Axion NYC gathered near Times Square and danced to Aankh Marey and we must say, the group was spectacular and matched the steps just perfectly. The video was shared by the group on their YouTube page earlier this week and went crazy viral in no time. The Aankh Marey song has been reprised for Simmba, which released today. It was originally picturised on actors Arshad Warsi and Simran Bagga for their 1996 film Tere Mere Sapne.

Take a look at the performance of the flash mob here.

Here’s Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan’s rocking dance on Aankh Marey.

In Aankh Marey 2.0, Arshad Warsi also makes an appearance, along with his Golmaal colleagues like Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Shreyas Talpade. Simmba‘s Aankh Marey rocked the chartbusters soon after it released.

Simmba released to mixed reviews today. It is directed by Rohit Shetty. Ranveer Singh plays the role of a corrupt cop Sangram Bhalerao, who transforms after a life-altering event. Sara Ali Khan plays his love interest.

Of Simmba, Sara Ali Khan earlier said, “The film is addressing the issue and that is my favourite part in the film. In a Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty film, the audience is going to expect high energy, entertainment and flying cars. Yes, those elements are there but then it comes to the real social message.”

Simmba also stars actors like Sonu Sood and Ashutosh Rana.

Let’s Legalize Use Of Recreational Marijuana, Says New York governor

In November, Massachusetts became the first East Coast state to open pot shops. (File)

New York:

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday called for the legalization of recreational marijuana use in his state — a move that would add America’s most populous city to the growing list of places that allow the drug’s use.

The announcement marked a shift for the Democrat, who was re-elected for a third term as governor of a state that is home to about 20 million people.

“Let’s legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana, once and for all,” Cuomo said in a speech at Hunter College in Manhattan about his priorities for 2019.

Cuomo had long opposed the legalization of marijuana, but during his re-election campaign earlier this year, when he faced competition from the left in the form of actress Cynthia Nixon, he said he was open to the possibility.

On Monday, he listed the arguments for decriminalizing marijuana use that Nixon had made. At the time, she said the only people still being arrested for smoking a joint in New York were minorities.

“The fact is we have had two criminal justice systems — one for the wealthy and the well off, and one for everyone else,” Cuomo said, decrying a system he said had “for too long targeted the African-American and minority communities.”

New York state includes New York City, which is the most populous American city with some 8.5 million residents.

If the state were to legalize recreational marijuana use in 2019, it would be a boost to supporters of legalization nationwide.

Canada, which borders New York, in October became the world’s first major economy to fully legalize cannabis.

Since Colorado decriminalized recreational pot use in 2014, nine other states and the federal capital Washington, DC have followed suit.

Those states are Alaska, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

In November, Massachusetts became the first East Coast state to open pot shops for those over the age of 21. In New Jersey, another neighbor of New York, lawmakers are expected to move towards legalization in 2019.

Most other states allow for limited use of medical marijuana.

It remains outlawed under federal regulations.

Colin Kroll Cofounder Of Vine And HQ Trivia Dead At 34 In New York Apartment

Colin Kroll co-founded Vine, the popular short-form video service acquired in 2012 by Twitter.

New York, United States:

US tech star Colin Kroll, who co-founded Vine and popular gaming app HQ Trivia, was found dead Sunday in New York of an apparent drug overdose.

Police found Kroll, 34, unconscious and unresponsive in a bedroom of his Manhattan apartment, a New York police spokesman told NBC television.

A drug overdose is the suspected cause of death, police said, and an investigation is underway.

Kroll co-founded Vine, the popular short-form video service acquired in 2012 by Twitter that is now defunct.

In September, he was named the chief executive of HQ Trivia, a smartphone-based trivia platform.

HQ Trivia confirmed his death in a statement.

“We learned today of the passing of our friend and founder, Colin Kroll, and it’s with deep sadness that we say goodbye,” it said. “Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

HQ Trivia, launched in August 2017, was a blockbuster, hitting a March milestone of two million concurrent players.

But by November, the number of users plunged from millions to hundreds of thousands, according to tech news site Recode.

Time magazine said Kroll, who was reportedly fired from Twitter over poor management behavior, was facing allegations he had acted inappropriately at HQ Trivia.

New York Man Assaults Indian-Origin Woman On Subway, Charged With Hate Crime

If convicted, Allasheed Allah faces three and one-half to 15 years in prison. (Representational)

New York:

A 54-year old man has been charged with hate crime for assaulting an Indian-origin woman travelling in a subway and using homophobic slurs against her. Allasheed Allah, 54, was brought before the court on Thursday and charged with assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment against Avneet Kaur, 20, for the attack in New York City’s Queens borough last month.

According to the charges, Ms Kaur was travelling in a subway train in Manhattan last month when Mr Allasheed engaged her in a verbal dispute. He then began making homophobic slurs towards Ms Kaur and her friend.

As the two women began to walk away, the Mr Allasheed followed them and attacked Ms Kaur in the back of her head and then once on her chest causing her to fall and strike her head and neck on a pole before hitting the floor.

According to the charges, Mr Allasheed admitted that he used homophobic language against Ms Kaur and threatened her if she kissed her friend, travelling with her on the subway, again.

Ms Kaur was immediately transported to a local Queens hospital where she underwent treatment for a fractured spine.

If convicted, Mr Allasheed faces three and one-half to 15 years in prison, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

“Queens County is the most diverse county in the nation. It is home to many races, nationalities and sexual orientations. Crimes motivated by bias – particularly those involving violence – will never be tolerated in this county. When they do regrettably occur, they will be vigorously prosecuted and those involved will be severely punished,” Mr Brown said.

New York, Times Square Wedding Proposal, New York Police Find Couple Whose Engagement Ring Went Down A Drain

Nearly 12,000 people have retweeted the video since Saturday, drawing numerous puns from the public

Just before midnight, a man standing on a sidewalk near the Olive Garden in Times Square decided that the spot was romantic enough.

The sidewalk itself is nondescript. It is wide enough for shoppers to hustle down the street. The gutters sparkle with trash.

And then, the proposal turned south.

His girlfriend said yes, the New York Police Department said Saturday, but the unidentified man fumbled the engagement ring. It bounced eight feet into a utility grate.

A short surveillance video released by the department show the apparently flustered man, his hands thrust out like a comedian pleading with a crowd after a bad joke. The unidentified woman bent down to assess the fall. The man lay down to peer into the abyss.

Times Square, New York: Officers returned to the scene on Saturday morning, removed the grate and recovered the ring, then launched a social media campaign to find the couple

The couple flagged down officers in the area for help, Sgt. Lee Jones, a department spokeswoman, told The Washington Post on Sunday. But they could not retrieve the ring. The couple left without filing a police report or providing their contact information.

Officers returned to the scene on Saturday morning, removed the grate and recovered the ring, then launched a social media campaign to find the couple.

Nearly 12,000 people have retweeted the video since Saturday, drawing numerous puns from the public. One choice response, channeling Beyonce: “He should have put a string on it.”

The department cleaned the ring and posted photos of it taped to a chair on social media, along with surveillance photos of the couple. But there have not been any promising leads, Jones said.

The woman is just over 5 feet tall and has blond hair, the department said. The man is about 5-foot-10 with a “manicured beard.”

The story has grabbed headlines, with one calling it a “romantic” proposal.

It’s also 2018, when prosecutors alleged that the tale of a generous homeless man giving his last few dollars to a stranded couple – captivating the nation and cajoling it into giving him $400,000 – was an elaborate hoax.

There was room for doubt early on. The moment would be groan-worthy in a made-for-TV rom-com.

And maybe just as predictably, their story has a happy ending.

On Sunday afternoon, New York police said the unfortunate pair, who are from England, had heard the authorities “were looking for them.”

“We’re making arrangements to get them their ring back. Congratulations!” the police tweeted.

Elephant Escapes Sanctuary, Runs Loose In New York

Fritha the elephant looked rather pleased with her late-night adventure.

An elephant in the state of New York, USA, recently decided to leave her sanctuary and explore the world outside. However, the mischievous escapee was soon escorted back home by the police and a sanctuary employee.

New York State Police said they received a call about 11.35 pm on Sunday about an elephant wandering loose on a road in Westtown, Orange County. They arrived at the scene to find Fritha – a 44-year-old elephant that had escaped from Amanda Brook’s sanctuary.

According to ABC News, Fritha had made her first stop at a 3-ton pile of hay and enjoyed a snack before continuing on her late-night adventure.

Police say they contacted sanctuary employees, who were then able to coax Fritha back home. Their post about the incident has gone viral on Facebook with over 1,000 ‘shares’ and hundreds of comments.

The owner of the sanctuary told ABC News that Fritha was able to escape due to human error.

“She has an electric fence that keeps her contained, and just human error, they forgot to flip her switch on and it makes a clicking noise and elephants are very, very smart and she knows that clicking noise wasn’t on.”

Police say Fritha was brought to the USA from Vietnam after she was burned by napalm during the Vietnam War.

Amazon Picks New York City And Virginia For $5 Billion New Headquarters

A building in Virginia that Amazon is considering as part of its new headquarters. (Reuters)

Amazon announced Tuesday it would split its “second headquarters” between New York City and northern Virginia, investing some $5 billion in the two locations for the US online giant.

“These two locations will allow us to attract world-class talent that will help us to continue inventing for customers for years to come,” Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

The announcement comes after a yearlong search and competition from dozens of North American cities seeking the estimated 50,000 jobs that will be created with the new headquarters, which had been dubbed “HQ2.”

Amazon selected the Long Island City neighborhood in the New York borough of Queens, across the East River from Manhattan, and the Crystal City section of Arlington, across the Potomac from the US capital Washington.

These will be new headquarters with equivalent status to Amazon’s home in Seattle, Washington.

Empire State Building, New York Lights Up In Orange To Celebrate Diwali 2018

Happy Diwali 2018: This was the first time that Diwali celebration lit up the Empire State Building

New York:

For the first time, the iconic Empire State Building was lit orange in celebration of Diwali. The world famous structure turned orange on Wednesday night as Indians across the world celebrated the festival of lights. The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), the largest non-profit umbrella organisation in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut of the Indian community, lit up the monument in a special ceremony.

It was organised by the FIA in cooperation with the Empire State Realty Trust and attended by key members of the Indian diaspora. A special dance performance and cultural show was also presented on the occasion.

Federation of Indian Associations President Srujal Parikh said this was the first time that Diwali celebration lit up the iconic building and was “witnessed by thousands of people, including tourists from all over the world.”

At the November 7 ceremony, Miss America 2014 Nina Devuluri and popular singer Jay Sean along with Srujal Parikh flipped the switch to turn on the orange lights on top of the Empire State Building.

The Empire State Realty Trust or ESRT and the FIA have been illuminating the Empire State Building in August every year in the colours of the Indian tricolour – orange, white and green – for the past two decades to mark India’s Independence Day.

The FIA said such gestures by the ESRT help in spreading the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudeva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) and also demonstrates a great harmony in spirit and deeds between people of the world’s largest and oldest democracies.

For Srujal Parikh, that was the central message when he organised the India Day parade this year, bringing together for the first time communities from other South Asian and Caribbean nations.

Inside Sonali Bendre’s ‘Unconventional’ Diwali In New York With Husband And Son

New Delhi:

Sonali Bendre’s husband Goldie Behl and their son Ranveer joined the actress in New York to celebrate Diwali together. Sonali, who is undergoing cancer treatment there, shared a set of pictures from their ‘unconventional’ Diwali and posted details about the way they celebrated the festival. “It was quite an unconventional one. We didn’t have Indian clothes, had a small puja, but it was all heart,” she wrote. In the pictures, we see the family praying to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi idols. For the prasad, they offered a bowl of gulab jamun and dry fruits. Inside Sonali Bendre and Goldie Behl’s Diwali In New York.

Sonali Bendre was diagnosed with cancer in July and since then she has been in New York for the treatment. She has chronicled her fight with cancer with some inspiring posts on Instagram. She has also written about her high and low moments while battling cancer.

Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them. There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I’ve received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful. I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me.

From the moment he was born 12 years, 11 months and 8 days ago, my amazing @rockbehl took ownership of my heart. From then on, his happiness and wellbeing have been the centre of anything @goldiebehl and I ever did. And so, when the Big C reared its ugly head, our biggest dilemma was what and how we were going to tell him. As much as we wanted to protect him, we knew it was important to tell him the full facts. We’ve always been open and honest with him and this time it wasn’t going to be different. He took the news so maturely… and instantly became a source of strength and positivity for me. In some situations now, he even reverses roles and takes on being the parent, reminding me of things I need to do! I believe that it’s imperative to keep kids involved in a situation like this. They are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for. It’s important to spend time with them and include them, rather than make them wait on the side-lines, not being told yet instinctively knowing everything. In our effort to protect them from the pain and realities of life, we might end up doing the opposite. I’m spending time with Ranveer right now, while he’s on summer vacation. His madness and shenanigans help me #SwitchOnTheSunshine. And today, we derive strength from each other #OneDayAtATime

After she moved to the US, her friends Dia Mirza, Sussanne Khan and Gayatri Joshi took over the club for her. In August, they organised for a conversation as part of Sonali’s Book Club, which was also live streamed on her Facebook profile.

When in New York, Sonali also caught up with actor Rishi Kapoor, who is also in the US for medical treatment. She also met Priyanka Chopra and attended her bridal shower, along with Neetu Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor’s wife.
