Hillary Clinton Writes To 8-Year-Old Girl Who Ran For Class President And Lost To A Boy

Eight-year-old Martha Kennedy Morales got a huge surprise when she opened a personal letter sent to her home. It was from Hillary Clinton, who was consoling Martha for losing an election for class president to a boy — by a single vote.

“As I know too well, it’s not easy when you stand up and put yourself in contention for a role that’s only been sought by boys,” Clinton wrote.

Clinton, who lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election, was the first woman to be nominated as a presidential candidate by any major political party in US history. Clinton won the popular vote by several million votes but lost in the electoral college.

The youngster attends Friends Community School, a small, private Quaker school in College Park, Maryland, and is a third-grader in a combined third- and fourth-grade class. Martha said that as part of a unit on US government, elections for class president and Congress were held, and she decided to run for the top job. Her opponent, she said, was a popular fourth-grade boy.

The election was held, but six ballots were declared invalid because students had not filled them out correctly. Another vote was taken. Martha lost by a single vote, she said, and was declared vice president.

In a description of her job that US vice presidents could have given, she said: “Now I get to be the tiebreaker if the House and Senate can’t agree. And I have meetings with the president. That’s all that I know that I do.”

Her father, Albert Morales, said Martha waged a serious campaign to win, and he routinely posted campaign updates on his Facebook page. He revealed the results of the contest there, too.

Democratic political activist Bryan Weaver said a number of Albert Morales’ friends saw his Facebook posts, got caught up in the election and were upset when Martha lost. “A friend of mine who runs a bar on U Street (in Washington, DC) welled up with tears,” he said.

Someone who knows Clinton saw the posts and mentioned it to her, and she decided to write to the youngster. Her spokesman, Nick Merrill, confirmed that the letter is authentic.

“My mom was just picking me up from school, and she pulled the letter out of her purse,” Martha said. “I opened it up, and it was a letter from Hillary Clinton. I was very surprised.”

Albert Morales said: “My wife texted me a copy and said Martha was just very happy and excited and surprised that Hillary would take the time to write to her.”

The 8-year-old, who is looking forward to turning 9 next week, is now working on a thank-you note.

Congress Writes To Madhya Pradesh Governor, Stakes Claim To Form Government

Congress’ Kamal Nath asked for a meeting with Governor Patel, as soon as the results are declared.

Bhopal/New Delhi:

Even as results are being counted well past midnight in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress, which is emerging as the single largest party but slightly short of a majority, is not taking any chances. State party chief Kamal Nath late on Tuesday wrote to Governor Anandiben Patel, staking claim to form the government.

Claiming that the Congress has the support of Independent candidates, Mr Nath asked for a meeting with Governor Patel, as soon as the results are declared. Kamal Nath, a master strategist, has already opened talks with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the Samajwadi Party, Gondwana Gantantra Party and independents.

“The Congress party has emerged as the single largest party with a majority support. All the independents have in addition assured support to the Congress party,” Kamal Nath wrote in his letter.

“As the president of Pradesh Congress Committee, I seek an appointment with your Excellency late tonight, as soon as the results are officially declared along with my senior leaders to apprise you and seek your permission to form government in the state of Madhya Pradesh,” he added.

However, sources in Raj Bhavan, the Governor’s office, have said till the final results are announced, it would be difficult to commit a time for the meeting.

Assembly Elections 2018 Live Results : Madhya Pradesh

Results have been declared in 178 of the state’s 230 constituencies and are awaited in 52 others. The Congress has won 88 seats and is leading in 25 others. If it wins all these seats, it will end up with 113 seats, three short of majority.

Independent candidates have won three seats are leading in one more. If they support the Congress, the party will manage to cross the halfway mark.

The ruling BJP, meanwhile, has bagged 86 seats and is leading in 23 others.

Madhya Pradesh saw a close fight on Tuesday that swung wildly between the Congress and the BJP, whose Shivraj Singh Chouhan was eyeing a record fourth term.

In 2013 elections, the BJP had won 165 of the 230 seats, followed by the Congress at 58 and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) at 4.

A victory in the state sets the Congress up for a leadership battle between its top 3 in the state — Kamal Nath, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Digvijaya Singh.

So far, the party has been silent on the subject. As the results came in, Mr Scindia drove to Kamal Nath’s house and the leaders arrived together at the party office in Bhopal.

UN Body Writes To India On Alleged Kidnapping Of Dubai Princesses

Princess Sheikha Latifa tried to escape in March.

United Nations:

A UN body on enforced disappearances has communicated to India on the case of one of the daughters of Dubai’s ruler, who was allegedly kidnapped in March aboard a US-flagged yacht off the Indian coast while attempting to flee from the UAE.

Princess Sheikha Latifa is the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the prime minister of the UAE. She is one of the 30 children who tried to escape in March after complaining she was effectively being held prisoner by her repressive father.

She fled across the border to Oman with the help of a friend, before boarding a boat to meet French national Herve Jaubert, who had himself managed to successfully escape the Emirates in 2010.

The boat set sail for the Indian coast but was intercepted by three Indian and two Emirati warships – with Jaubert claiming he and his crew were beaten by commandos before Latifa was whisked away, The Telegraph reported.

There was no immediate comment from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Coast Guard.

The Human Rights Council’s Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, in its report dated August 16, 2018 on ‘Communications, cases examined, observations and other activities’, said it has transmitted to India a copy of the case of Latifa.

It said on May 2, 2018, the Working Group, under its urgent action procedure, transmitted to the Government of the UAE the case of Latifa “allegedly kidnapped on March 4, 2018 aboard a United States-flagged yacht, off the Indian coast while attempting to flee from Dubai, by Indian military and security services, as well as coast guards, and reportedly handed over to the authorities of the UAE”.

The report added “her fate and whereabouts remain unknown”.

An email to the Geneva-based Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances seeking comment on the case was not immediately answered.

Rights group Human Rights Watch (HRW), in a statement in May this year, said that the UAE authorities had intercepted Latifa in March as she tried to flee by sea to a third country, and returned her to the UAE.

Latifa had told friends that she wished to flee restrictions imposed by her family, the rights group said.

The group said Tiina Jauhiainen, a Finnish citizen and a former Dubai resident for 17 years, told it that she met Latifa in 2010 and developed a long-term friendship with her.

Jauhiainen said she and Latifa left the UAE on February 24. Later that day, they joined Jaubert on his private boat, sailing toward southeast Asia.

Jauhiainen said that on March 4 the boat stopped 50 miles off the coast of Goa, according to the HRW statement.

“She was told about the location by Jaubert. At around 10 pm she and Latifa were below deck when they heard shouting and gunfire and locked themselves in the bathroom. The cabin filled with gas, forcing them onto the deck,” it said.

Jauhiainen said that she saw several boats around their boat. Men boarded their boat, pointed guns at her, forced her to the ground, and tied her hands behind her back, according to the HRW statement.

She said the men kept shouting in English, “Who is Latifa?”, adding that she later heard Latifa, whom she could not see, trying to break free and repeatedly shouting that she wanted to claim asylum.

She said the men removed Latifa from the boat, the statement said. It appeared that Jaubert and the crew had been mistreated, Jauhiainen said, describing Jaubert’s face as “bloody” and “unrecognisable”.

Jauiainen told the Human Rights Watch that the Indian Coast Guard participated in the raid in coordination with the UAE authorities.

The Working Group was established by the then UN Commission on Human Rights in 1980 to assist families in determining the fate and whereabouts of disappeared relatives.

On the other hand, the Dubai government in a statement said that Latifa was with her family. “Her Highness Sheikha Latifa is now safe in Dubai,” read a statement released on Thursday by Dubai’s Royal Court.

“She and her family are looking forward to celebrating her birthday today (sic), in privacy and peace, and to building a happy and stable future for her,” The Telegraph quoted the statement as saying.

Delhi Class 7 Student Hangs Herself, Writes Teacher’s Name On Palm

Class 7 student hanged herself at her home in West Delhi.

New Delhi:

A Class 7 student allegedly committed suicide in West Delhi on Saturday, when her mother was away at work. She had scribbled her teacher’s name on her hands and a note that she did not want to go to school anymore.

“Lord Krishna, I am coming,” said one message on her palm. In another, she wrote for her mother: “I love you”.

A suicide note has also been found, the police said.

The 12 year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan at her home.

“On her palms and hands she wrote that she did not want to go to school any more. She apologised to her mother and grandmother and said she was going to meet Lord Krishna,” senior police officer Madhup Tiwari told news agency IANS.

The girl’s mother, a lawyer, last saw her alive when she was leaving for the Tis Hazari Court. She said the girl had refused to go to school.

When she returned at 4 PM, she found her daughter’s body.

“My daughter complained that the teacher scolded her every day. The same teacher rebuked and humiliated her on Friday for 10 minutes in the biology lab. She cried in the school bathroom after the episode,” her mother told news agency IANS.

“She had been insisting that I change her school but I did not know how serious the situation was. I would never imagine she would commit suicide,” the mother said, sobbing.

The school management said in a statement said it was fully cooperating with the police and was also carrying out an internal inquiry.

“As of now we are not at liberty to disclose any details which may jeopardise the police investigation of the case,” the statement said.

The police are waiting for the girl’s autopsy report and say they are speaking to her classmates.

DK Shivakumar Writes To E Palaniswami, Says Need “Amicable” Solution To Cauvery Dispute

“Cauvery is the lifeline of both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka,” DK Shivakumar said.

Chennai:

Karnataka Water Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday called for finding an amicable solution to the long pending Cauvery water sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu.

“The Government of Karnataka desires an amicable solution to the issue of Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir-cum-Drinking Water project,” Mr Shivakumar said in the letter written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami.

“Cauvery is the lifeline of both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and is very sacred for the people of both the states. Governments and people of both wish for a permanent solution to the issues pertaining to Cauvery,” he said. Mr Shivakumar added that the project will also help in regulating the release of water.

“It appears that there are certain misconceptions about the proposed project, the reality of the project is different,” the letter reads. Mr Shivakumar urged Tamil Nadu to present the project details and also hold a discussion on the same at a convenient time.

This Cauvery dispute dates back to the 1970s and has its origin in two agreements signed between the erstwhile Madras Presidency and the Princely State of Mysore in 1892 and 1924 in which it was decided to divide the river water between the two states, which lapsed in 1974.

cauvery water dispute

The Cauvery dispute dates back to the 1970s and has its origin in two agreements signed between the erstwhile Madras Presidency and the Princely State of Mysore in 1892.

Tamil Nadu then asked the Congress-ruled government at the Centre to form a tribunal to look into the diversion of water and ensure that it gets its due share. When the Centre did not pay heed to Tamil Nadu’s demand, it approached the Supreme Court, which, in May 1990, ordered the creation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

In its later order, the top court had pronounced that Karnataka is given an additional 14.75 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of the river water while 177.25 TMC of water be released for Tamil Nadu. The allocation of Karnataka which used to be 270 TMC has been increased to284.75

Ajay Maken Writes To Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel Over Frequent Special Sessions

A special session has been called on Monday to discuss the chilli powder attack on Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi:

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken Sunday wrote a letter to Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, expressing “disappointment” over frequent special sessions of the House called by the ruling AAP over “individual, worthless” issues.

A special session of Delhi Assembly has been called on Monday to discuss, among other issues, the recent red chilli powder attack on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at the secretariat on November 20.

Mr Maken, who was Speaker of Delhi Assembly during the Sheila Dikshit government, pointed out that while Congress called three special sessions of the House during its 15-year rule, while the AAP has done so 15 times in its three-and-half years in power.

“No matter of public interest have been discussed in these special sessions called by the AAP government,” he alleged.

Mr Maken, in his letter, said special sessions of the Assembly were called by the Congress to discuss conversion of vehicles to CNG, sealing and dilution of Delhi government’s powers.

“Calling frequent special sessions of the Assembly on private, worthless issues not only hurts its image but also causes waste of public money,” he said.

The Congress leader alleged that the AAP dispensation has no time for calling special sessions on issues like sealing, the “deteriorating” law-and-order situation and dengue, that directly affect the people of Delhi.

Sharad Pawar Writes To Devendra Fadnavis Over Maharashtra Drought

In his letter, Sharad Pawar expressed concern over draught in Maharashtra. (File)

Mumbai:

Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, asking him to undertake concrete action in view of “drought” situation in the state and pay “personal attention” to tackle the problem.

Mr Pawar noted there was shortage of water and that livestock is under threat due to lack of fodder.

“The state government needs to undertake concrete action programme keeping the seriousness of the drought in mind…you please pay personal attention into it,” Mr Pawar said in the letter written to Mr Fadnavis on Friday.

Along with the letter, Mr Pawar has also suggested the chief minister ways to tackle the current situation.

The former Union agriculture minister observed that Maharashtra is faced with water shortage due to subnormal rainfall.

He said kharif (summer) crops stand damaged, while cultivation of rabi (winter) crops is in trouble due to scanty rainfall.

“I hope timely action will be taken to tackle the drought situation and hope people of the state will get relief,” Mr Pawar added.

A large part of Maharashtra is reeling under severe water scarcity due to deficient monsoon this year.

Last month, Mr Fadnavis had said around 180 talukas in Maharashtra were facing a “drought-like” situation. The state has more than 350 talukas spread across 36 districts.

#MeToo Hits All India Radio, Maneka Gandhi Writes To Rajyavardhan Rathore

Maneka Gandhi wrote that the Workplace Act was equally applicable to all employees (file)

New Delhi:

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi has written to Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, demanding a probe into reports of sexual harassment of casual announcers at state-owned All India Radio (AIR). Alleging that no action was taken on complaints filed by temporary employees, the minister wrote that the Workplace Act was equally applicable to all employees irrespective of the nature of their employment.

“I am enclosing a copy of a news item where it has been reported that women working as casual announcers in All India Radio are being sexually harassed. The news item indicates that this problem (exists) at different stations of AIR. The details of the complaints are such that I am compelled to refer them to you for an inquiry,” Ms Gandhi wrote in the letter.

Ms Gandhi said the “tendency to dismiss a casual woman employee the moment she reports sexual harassment” was not at all good.

“I would like to submit that the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act is equally applicable to a woman employee irrespective of her being a permanent, temporary or casual employee. Some of these women had complained to the appropriate authorities but no action seems to have been taken. I understand that an organisation would have a natural tendency to dismiss a casual woman employee the moment she reports sexual harassment. But this is not good,” the minister added.

MJ Akbar resigned last month from the post of minister of state for external affairs after 20 women accused him of sexually harassing them when he worked as a journalist. A woman also alleged that Akbar raped her when she worked at a newspaper he edited.

Under the #Metoo movement, thousands of women have come out on social media platforms with their accounts of sexual harassment at work place. Allegations of sexual misconduct came up against several journalists and Bollywood personalities.

Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them. There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. What has helped has been the immense outpouring of love and support I’ve received over the past few days, for which I am very grateful. I’m taking this battle head on, knowing I have the strength of my family and friends behind me.
