Spider-Man PS4 is one of the best games of the year thus far and its early sales seem to reflect this. According to Sony, Spider-Man PS4 has sold 3.3 million units in its first three days of release. However, Spider-Man’s appeal on the PS4 appears to have ensured it eclipses Spider-Man: Homecoming’s opening weekend earnings at the box office according to a recent report. This is staggering for Sony when you consider that God of War, another PS4 exclusive, sold 3.1 million units in its first three days this year. Spider-Man PS4 is now the fastest selling PS4 game ever.
“While Sony did not provide an official number, with a retail price of $59.99 for the game the 3.3 million copies translates to roughly $198 million, crushing the $117 million opening weekend box office of the latest solo Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Homecoming,” according to USA Today.
In terms of pre-orders, Spider-Man PS4 hit one million, which is another record for Sony. Keep in mind that the sales of Spider-Man PS4 include the Spider-Man PS4 and PS4 Pro bundles too. And while the company did not say how many of these consoles were sold, adding their revenue would push the $198 million figure even higher.
“Our expectations are always set at the highest levels,” Stephen Turvey, PlayStation’s Global Senior Vice President of Sales and Head of North America Business Operations, told USA Today. “It’s met and exceeded all expectations. I think the company and the campus and our fans are super proud of it.”
In our Spider-Man PS4 review, we stated that it isn’t just triumph for video games. It’s quite possibly the definitive interpretation of the superhero in any medium.

Mallika Sherawat is kickstarting her weekend on a healthy note
Mallika posted a picture of a vegan salad on her Instagram
A number of celebs are turning vegan
Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat may not be making frequent appearance on the Indian silver screen, but she has been making headlines every now and then. Recently, the actor made headlines for locking herself up in a cage to promote ‘Free a Girl’ initiative, for which she is the brand ambassador. She also made head-turning appearances at the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival 2018. Additionally, Mallika Sherawat is starring in an episode of a web series called ‘The Story’. Sherawat is quite social media savvy and regularly posts pictures and videos from her travels and daily life. She also often posts pictures of vegan meals and drinks, convincing us that even meat-free food can be delicious.
Case in point is today, when Mallika Sherawat posted a picture of a vegan salad bowl on her Instagram stories. The meal looks wholesome and quite appetising. From what we can make out, Mallika Sherawat’s vegan salad is high in fats, thanks to the ripe green avocados, and low in carbs. “My favourite food, yumm”, Sherawat wrote about the very green vegan salad.
Have a look:
Doesn’t that look delicious? Mallika Sherawat is inspiring us to eat healthy! But, it’s not just about salads for Sherawat. She also indulges in vegan burgers. Have a look:
“A juicy Vegan burger, on quinoa bread, yummmm”, wrote Mallika on Instagram. Even her teas are vegan.
“Chai in the Mumbai monsoon tastes even better (the chai I have is with Almond milk)”, she wrote on Instagram. Mallika Sherawat is among a growing crop of celebrities, who are going vegan, as more and more people associate themselves with the cause of cruelty-free food. However, vegan (meat- and dairy-free) food is still a luxury as vegan products are expensive and less frequently available in the markets. Well, we are inspired to eat clean and healthy by just looking at this salad. Aren’t you?
PM Modi’s review meet analyse the health of the economy, deliberate intervention measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to hold a review meet this weekend to analyse the health of the economy and deliberate if any intervention measures are required to stem the fall of rupee and rising oil prices, sources said.
An increase in interest rate to shore up the rupee, that hit a fresh lifetime low Wednesday, is also being talked about in some quarters.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar, PMEAC Chairman Bibek Debroy and Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia are among the officials who are likely to attend the meeting Saturday, sources privy to the development said.
While the structure of the meeting is not known, it may review macroeconomic indicators, government finances and implementation of flagship financial inclusion and other development schemes, they said.
The rupee Wednesday rebounded from its historic low of 72.91 to end higher by 51 paise at 72.18 after the Finance Ministry assured of steps to avert its fall to “unreasonable levels”.
Besides having an impact on current account deficit, the nosediving rupee has made imports costlier and led to petrol and diesel prices skyrocketing to record highs.
The Finance Ministry has ruled out any cut in taxes to ease the burden on consumers, saying it does not have the bandwidth to lose any revenue without developmental spending being cut. The government can ill-afford this in an election year.
Opposition parties led by Congress have made spiralling fuel prices and plummeting rupee a political issue and questioned the efficacy of the government’s economic policies.
They have been demanding that the Centre cut excise duty and some of the states ruled by them including Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have announced measures to cut local taxes.
Petrol price Tuesday climbed to an all-time high of Rs 80.87 per litre in Delhi, while in Mumbai it inched up to Rs 88.26. A litre of diesel in the national capital was priced at Rs 72.97 and Rs 77.47 in Mumbai.
Every Rs 2 cut in price of petrol and diesel would lead to a revenue loss of around Rs 30,000 crore, as per ministry estimates.
The government has so far maintained that it would not take any knee-jerk action as a response to the fall in rupee or spike in fuel prices.
Data from the Commerce Ministry has shown better than expected trade deficit at $17.40 billion in August, down from $18.02 billion a month ago. Exports grew 19 per cent to $27.84 billion while imports rose 25.41 per cent to $45.24 billion.
Also, boosting the government was retail inflation rate easing to a 10-month low of 3.69 per cent in August.
Sources said while the Centre has virtually ruled out a cut in excise duty, saying that it would mean that a commensurate reduction in developmental expenditure has to be undertaken to keep the fiscal deficit at the budgeted level, it is up to the states to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel.
The retail price of petrol and diesel is arrived at after adding excise duty, which is charged by the Central government, commission paid to petrol pumps dealers and VAT, charged by the state governments.
While Brent crude oil price is hovering at around $79 a barrel, the relentless slide in rupee has put pressure on the oil import bill.
The Current Account Deficit (CAD), which is the difference between inflow and outflow of foreign exchange, rose to $18 billion or 2.4 per cent of GDP in the April-June quarter on account widening trade deficit.
International websites seem to be closely following all the developments related to Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ rumoured romance. People Magazine and E! News had earlier reported that Priyanka and Nick got engaged in London in July, after having dated for a couple of months. Now, it is believed that their engagement party will be hosted by the Chopras over the weekend in Mumbai. E! News reports that Nick and his family are travelling to India for the party. “Nick Jonas and his immediate family are traveling to India this weekend to attend an engagement party hosted by Priyanka’s family. It’s going to be the first time that their families intermingle and get to know each other,” a source told E! News.
Priyanka is already in India, where she is currently busy with her project, tentatively titled The Sky Is Pink. Nick reportedly proposed to Priyanka on her 36th birthday in London.
“It’s a tradition for them to meet before the wedding and Priyanka’s family insisted on hosting the Jonas family in their country. Priyanka wants everything to be traditional to respect her family’s values, and definitely an Indian wedding. Priyanka and Nick are excited for everyone to meet and to celebrate. Everything is very secretive but guests are expected to head there starting tomorrow. All of the plans are moving quickly and Priyanka and Nick do not want to have a long engagement,” the source told E! News.
Priyanka and her family had previously hosted Nick Jonas in Mumbai during their brief trip in June. Priyanka, her cousin Parineeti also took Nick to Goa and later, he attended an Ambani party.
Though there is no official confirmation about the rumoured engagement, but a response by Nick on being congratulated had sent the Internet into a meltdown and just yesterday, a picture of Priyanka and her stunning diamond ring from designer Manish Malhotra’s party, kept folks busy.
US Weekly reported that at an event in New York, when a fan congratulated Nick, he responded, “Thanks man!”
And, this was Priyanka’s picture, which the Internet believes is her engagement ring.
Nick Jonas, 25, had reportedly shut down an entire Tiffany’s store in New York to pick out Priyanka Chopra’s ring. Another E! News report states that Priyanka’s ring has a value of around $200,000. “Priyanka’s ring is a high quality cushion cut weighing around 4 carats. It looks to be somewhere around a G color, VS1 clarity which, from Tiffany & Co, would have a value of around $200,000,” Andrew Brown, President, WP Diamonds told E! News.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas first met at last year’s Met Gala.
Emissions from cars are the main source of particulate matter in the 10 cities during summer.
Spending a weekend in Europe’s 10 most popular cities during summer could have the same health impact as smoking one to four cigarettes per day, according to a study.
Emissions from cars are the main source of particulate matter in the 10 cities during summer months.
Car makers consistently violate fuel efficiency laws by manufacturing vehicles that generate more pollution than the permitted levels, the study said.
“Industry claims modern diesels are clean, but checks reveal this is false, with most emitting up to 18 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxide pollution,” according to the study by Transport & Environment (T&E), a European umbrella for NGO working in the field of transport and the environment, promoting sustainable transport in Europe.
“City breaks are supposed to be refreshing. But tourists are being warned that spending a long weekend in Europe’s 10 most popular but polluted cities could have the same health impacts as smoking between one and four cigarettes,” the study said.
London, hosting 19 million overnight international visitors per day, was ranked first, followed by Paris at 15 million.
Other cities are Istanbul, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Prague and Dublin, the study said.
The study reveals that air quality is far worse than what the official data shows in Italy, Germany, Bulgaria and Belgium.
Meanwhile, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Romania face billions in fines for breaching EU air pollution standards, the study claimed.
“When air pollution is bad, we are told to avoid eating or exercising outside. But walking around cities and eating on restaurant terraces is what city breaks are all about. Right now, tourists, including kids, are more or less forced to smoke, in terms of the health impacts,” said T&E air quality and diesel coordinator Jens Muller.
“City bosses need to get a grip on air pollution or risk a tourist backlash. Cars are the worst cause of air pollution in cities during the summer. Cheating carmakers should be given a deadline to truly clean up the mess they created. If they fail, polluting cars should quickly be banned from cities to protect residents,” she said.

This is the second season of the Volkswagen Ameo Cup in India
The second season for the Volkswagen Ameo Cup kick-started at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore last month and the 20 drivers, both rookie and experienced will now be challenging their limits at the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) in Chennai. This opening round was action packed with two exciting races with a crash in Race 2, the biggest seen by the championship yet. The opening round, however, belonged to Kolhapur-based racer Dhruv Mohite, who registered back-to-back wins over the Round 1 weekend.
(Dhruv Mohite leads the Ameo Cup after back-to-back wins in Round 1)
With Mohite on pole, it is Thane’s Saurav Bandyopadhyay in second place with two podium finishes in Round 1, while Anmol Singh Sahil from Ghaziabad sits third on the points table. The rookie drivers are also expected to give some strong competition to the experienced drivers with the wider and longer Chennai track giving a whole new set of opportunities for the drivers to test their skills.
The championship witnesses 20 young drivers being tutored and trained by Volkswagen India Motorsport. The Ameo Cup cars are based on the road-going versions, albeit with race-spec modifications including an eight-point roll cage, sport seats with six-point seatbelts, larger tyres, welded panels for added structural rigidity and a massive front wing for additional downforce. This season, the Ameo Cup cars ride on MRF tyres, which along with suspension upgrades, have improved the handling on the race-ready model.
The 2018 Volkswagen Ameo Cup car is powered by the 1.8-litre four-cylinder, turbocharged TSI engine tuned for 203 bhp and 320 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed 3MO sequential gearbox for quick gear changes. The car is substantially lighter than the road going model also comes with upgraded brakes.
The family of Azam, a father of a two-year-old child, is seeking justice.
A long drive on his weekly day off along with a relative and friends proved to be deadly for Mohammad Azam, a software engineer who was beaten to death by a mob in Karnataka”s Bidar district on Friday on suspicion of being a child lifter.
A pall of gloom has gripped the house of Azam, 28, in Errakunta in the old city of Hyderabad.
The body of Azam was brought to the city late Saturday and was buried at a graveyard near his house. Three friends of Azam, who were injured in the mob attack, were admitted to a private hospital in the city. They include Salham Eid Al Kubasi, a Qatari national and a friend of Azam who was on a vacation to India.
The family of Azam, a father of a two-year-old child, is seeking justice.
His brother Mohammad Akram, also a techie, urged the Telangana government to take up the issue with the Karnataka government for a proper investigations into the incident.
“The guilty should be punished so that no other innocent loses his life in this manner,” said Akram.
He recalled that their cousin Noor Mohammad, Salham, Mohammad Salman and another friend came to meet Azam on Friday. “They left the house around 11 a.m. We did not know that they were going out of the city,” said Akram.
It was a pleasure trip for the friends, who enjoyed the outing in the countryside. Relatives of Azam say they stopped at a hamlet and were taking pictures.
Slaham saw a group of children returning from a school. As he was carrying chocolates brought from Qatar, he offered it to few children out of affection.
When some people saw strangers including a foreigner offering chocolates to children, they mistook them to be child lifters. They started questioning them. Sensing trouble, the group left the place in their car.
However, few residents of the hamlet alerted people of nearby village Murki over their mobile phones.
At Murki, a mob chased the car and forced it to stop. The mob dragged out the occupants and started beating them with sticks and stones. After some time, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob.
While Azam died on the spot, others sustained critical injuries. Two of them were battling for life at a hospital in Hyderabad.
“We are software engineers. Do we look like child lifters,” asked Akram, who fails to understand why the mob did not believe their clarifications. The young man wants the governments to take some serious action to stop lynching over rumours being spread through WhatsApp.
More than 20 people have been killed across India over rumours in the last few months.
Diljit Dosanjh’s sports drama Soorma, which released last Friday, has earned Rs 13.85 crore so far, trade analyst Taran Adarsh reports. Over the weekend, the film made over Rs 10 crore and on Day 3, it added Rs 5.60 crore to the total earnings. Sunday’s collection has been the highest, as compared to Friday (Rs 3.20 crore) and Saturday (Rs 5.05 crore). “Soorma has decent weekend. Considering the low start on Friday morning, the business did escalate over the weekend, but the jump on Sunday wasn’t substantial enough. Maintaining the pace on weekdays is important. Friday 3.20 crore, Saturday 5.05 crore, Sunday 5.60 crore. Total: Rs 13.85 crore,” Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Here’s Soorma‘s box office report.
#Soorma has decent weekend… Considering the low start on Fri morning, the biz did escalate over the weekend, but the jump on Sun wasn’t substantial enough… Maintaining the pace on weekdays is important… Fri 3.20 cr, Sat 5.05 cr, Sun 5.60 cr. Total: 13.85 cr. India biz.
Soorma‘s business appears to be affected by Ranbir Kapoor’s blockbuster Sanjui, which released before Diljit Dosanjh’s film. Sanju crossed Rs 300 crore-mark on Saturday and the film’s current total now stands at Rs 316.64 crore. Meanwhile, Hollywood film Ant-Man And The Wasp, which released with Soorma has earned over Rs 19 crore.
#Sanju biz at a glance… Week 1: 202.51 cr Week 2: 92.67 cr Weekend 3: 21.46 cr Total: 316.64 cr India biz. ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER.
In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Soorma 2 stars out of 5. “Soorma is more drag than flick, a hockey film sans genuine impetus. It is nowhere near the league of Chak De! India despite telling a story that is no less intense than a wrongly victimized coach’s struggle for redemption. Come to think of it, the Shimit Amin film was made over a decade ago,” he wrote.
Soorma is a biopic on hockey player Sandeep Singh. The Shaad Ali-directed film also stars Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi.
Last Friday, Variety reported that Keri Russell is in early talks to join Star Wars: Episode IX. A couple of days later, THR brought word that Billy Dee Williams would return as Lando Calrissian.
Also on Friday, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange co-creator Steve Ditko passed away. He was 90.
On Monday, Netflix provided a release date for its second Indian original series Ghoul starring Radhika Apte – it’s out August 24 – and then followed it up with a trailer on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, a new THR report said that Joaquin Phoenix had finalised a deal to play the lead in the Joker origin movie, which has been in the works since last year.
On Wednesday, Deadline revealed that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp will helm the next RoboCop movie. It’s called RoboCop Returns, and it’s both a reboot and a sequel to the original franchise.
The 2018 Emmy nominations were announced on Thursday. Game of Thrones leads the way with 22 nominations, while Netflix topped the list of networks with most nominations.
Lastly, THR said the Black Widow has found its director in Cate Shortland (Lore), having found a screenwriter at the start of the year.
Movies Ant-Man and the Wasp Less than three months on from Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel’s next film – its third and final for 2018 – is here already. Ant-Man and the Wasp is set in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, and prior to the events of Infinity War, with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) struggling to balance his superhero responsibilities with his renewed dedication at home as a father.
Things get even more complex after Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and her scientist father Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) arrive at his doorstep with an urgent new mission. As the title suggests, Ant-Man has backup with Hope as the Wasp, which means learning to fight as a team. Petyon Reed returns as director, and the film also stars Bobby Cannavale, Hannah John-Kamen, Judy Greer, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Ant-Man and the Wasp has favourable reviews from most critics, including us. We think it benefits from being small-scale (no pun intended), its family dynamics, and humour-driven action, though it does feel unnecessary as part of the big Marvel picture – like an elongated hour of television that doesn’t really carry any weight.

A Quiet Place The Office’s John Krasinski has been showered with praise for his direction on this horror film, which starred him and his real-life wife Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow, The Devil Wears Prada) as the parents in a family of four, who are some of the few survivors of blind monsters who hunt for victims by sound. Hence, they must life a live of silence out in the woods if they wish to survive.
Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe star as the two children in the family, one deaf and the other hearing. Simmonds is deaf herself, and helped the director on set, in addition to teaching ASL to her co-stars. Krasinski co-wrote the screenplay with filmmaking partners Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, with cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Christensen (The Girl on the Train, Molly’s Game), and counts Michael Bay (Transformers) as a producer.
The film has received terrific praise, currently holding a 95 percent fresh rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Writing for The A.V. Club, A.A. Dowd said: “A Quiet Place takes [the contrast between deathly silence and deafening cacophony] to a new extreme, engulfing characters and viewers alike in an eerie sustained hush, and then generating anxiety about how and when it will suddenly be shattered. It turns sound itself, cinema’s first invader, into a threat.”
Lean on Pete The latest film by English writer-director Andrew Haigh – best known for 45 Years (2015) and Weekend (2011) – is set in the US, adapted from Willy Vlautin’s 2010 novel of the same name. It follows a 15-year-old named Charley Thompson (Charlie Plummer) and his single father who move to Portland, Oregon after a series of hardships.
Charley finds work at a local racetrack and forms a bond with an aging horse named Lean on Pete, with help from the horse’s bad-tempered owner Del Montgomery (Steve Buscemi) and his seasoned jocket Bonnie (Chloë Sevigny). When he discovers that the horse is bound for slaughter, Charley escapes with his new friend Pete into the American wilderness in search of his aunt and a place to call home.
After premiering at the Venice Film Festival last year, Lean on Pete is now available on home media and has good reviews. Vox’s Todd VanDerWerff called it one of his favourite films in 2018 and added: “A horse might not be able to feel love for a teenage boy, but Lean on Pete makes sure you know how deeply a teenage boy can feel love for a horse.”
Other mentions Amazon’s Comicstaan, a reality show about finding India’s next stand-up comedian, released its first four episodes on Friday.

Video games There are two great titles for the Nintendo Switch week this week: one new and one port. The former is Octopath Traveler, a new RPG from Square Enix that sends you on an adventure as one of eight travellers, each of whom have their own origins, paths, and goals. Its world is a mix of CG, pixel art, and “HD-2D” visuals, and it has turn-based combat with an innovative battle system. Octopath Traveler has a 84 score on Metacritic from 33 publications.
The latter port is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, originally released for the Wii U in 2014. Now available on the Switch, it has two-player co-op multiplayer and new levels themed on Super Mario Odyssey. It has a 81 score on Metacritic from 36 publications.
Music Palo Santo by Years & Years British synth-pop band Years & Years, led by popular frontman Olly Alexander who’s been outspoken for LGBT rights and mental health, returned last Friday with their second full-length album, after releasing two singles – “Sanctify” and “If You’re Over Me” – in the past few months, to promote the new effort that features contributions from the likes of Greg Kurstin, Steve Mac, Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and Two Inch Punch.
Palo Santo has been appreciated by critics. The Guardian’s Laura Snapes said it “refashions religion’s stark language of judgment and sin as matters of human nature”, “expands their ambitions in adrenaline-filled songs of heartbreak smothered with self-destruction” and concluded: “It’s probably not what anyone expects a male pop star to do in 2018. But listening to the astute, convincingly ambitious Palo Santo, you wish more of them would.”
Over at The Independent, Roisin O’Connor thinks Years & Years are the best pop in the UK at the moment. She also noted the use of “religious iconography to explore themes of sexuality, queerness and guilt in the most gloriously unapologetic fashion” in addition to a “soulful and raw” sound for the slow-tempo songs, and praised Alexander’s “courage to put all of that vibrant, dynamic character on full display”.
