DxOMark Starts Testing Selfie Cameras; Google Pixel 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Share Top Spot (For Now)

DxOMark, the camera testing portal that is popular for publishing camera results of different flagship smartphones, has now started testing selfie cameras on phones. The DxOMark Selfie test protocol that is designed specifically for the front camera sensors takes more than 1,500 self-portraits and two hours of video to determine selfie results. The DxOMark team uses the same procedures and methodologies that it considers for testing the main camera performance of smartphones. However, there are important modifications “to reflect the way front cameras are used”. The models that are currently leading on the selfie camera scale of DxOMark are the Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with overall scores of 92. These are early days yet however, with only 10 phones as yet tested.

To test selfie results, DxOMark considers factors such as skin tones, colour rendering, white balance accuracy and repeatability, and colour uniformity. The team also has a dedicated portrait test equipment understand the performance of the front camera. Moreover, image scientists at DxOMark take over-beautification of selfie cameras into account while giving results.

DxOMark has kicked off its selfie camera testing protocol by picking up 10 phones. The list includes the Apple iPhone X, iPhone XS Max, Google Pixel 3, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, P20 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S8, and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. However, the top spot is shared by the Pixel 3 and Galaxy Note 9 that both scored 92. The Mi Mix 3 and the iPhone XS Max, on the other hand, reached the third and fourth spots, respectively.

Interestingly, the DxOMark team has given an overall score of 81 to the Galaxy S9+, though the flagship shares the same hardware of the Galaxy Note 9. It seems that the handset was taken for the testing before the latest update that improved its selfie performance.

Elaborating the performance, DxOMark mentions in its blog post that the Pixel 3 has an edge over the Galaxy Note 9 in terms of focus system. The Galaxy Note 9 is said to have better results for exposure and colour, though. Selfies on the Pixel 3 are claimed to have slightly stronger contrast and a cooler white balance.

Distinctly, the Galaxy Note 9 is found to offer better exposing for faces alongside applying less contrast to faces to make selfies look slightly more natural than what on the Pixel 3. The Samsung model is also found to deliver good colour rendering and stabilisation on the part of selfie videos.

Donald Trump Warns Top Democrat Nancy Pelosi Over Mexico Wall Deal

Democrat Nancy Pelosi rejected Donald Trump’s deal on immigration and the Mexico border wall.

Washington:

US President Donald Trump bitterly attacked top Democrat Nancy Pelosi on Sunday after she rejected a deal on immigration and the Mexico border wall that would end a 30-day-old government shutdown.

Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives, on Saturday called Trump’s offer of temporary protections for about a million immigrants in return for $5.7 billion to fund the wall a “non-starter.”

“Nancy Pelosi has behaved so irrationally & has gone so far to the left that she has now officially become a Radical Democrat,” Trump tweeted. “She is so petrified of the ‘lefties’ in her party that she has lost control.”

“…And by the way, clean up the streets in San Francisco, they are disgusting!” he added, in a seemingly gratuitous aside. Pelosi is from San Francisco.

The offer also was assailed by prominent anti-immigrant voices, which denounced it as tantamount to amnesty.

“No, Amnesty is not a part of my offer. It is a 3 year extension of DACA,” Trump said in another tweet, referring to former president Barack Obama’s program to shield undocumented immigrants who entered the country as children.

Besides the 700,000 immigrants already enrolled in the so-called DACA or “Dreamers” program, Trump’s proposal would also extend to another 300,000 people who had been protected from deportation under another program.

He said that while there would be “no big push” to remove the 11 million people in the country illegally, he warned: ‘but be careful, Nancy!”

Vice President Mike Pence, who has been leading the administration’s contacts with members of Congress, said a bill with the president’s proposal would be introduced in the Republican-controlled Senate as early as Tuesday.

Report Says, Government Sacks 2 Top PNB Officials Over Failing To Detect Fraud

The firing of the two executive directors is the first instance of sacking of the bank’s employees

New Delhi:

Government has sacked two senior executives of the state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) for allegedly failing to prevent a $2 billion fraud, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said today, nearly a year after the country’s biggest bank scam came to light.

The firing of the two executive directors, whom the CBI have accused of breaching the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, is the first instance of sacking of the bank’s employees since it said that billionaire diamond jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle had for years fraudulently raised billions of dollars in foreign credit by conspiring with staff at the bank.

Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, who left India before the fraud was discovered, have denied the accusations.

In a stock exchange filing late on Friday, the country’s second-biggest state bank said the government had removed K. Veera Brahmaji Rao and Sanjiv Sharan “from the office of executive director” with immediate effect. The filing did not give a reason.

The government then fired them because “they failed to use global payments network SWIFT to detect the fraud”, the sources said, declining to be identified because the reasons for the sacking have not been made public.

“They were not able to supervise and there was dereliction of duty on their part,” said one of the sources, a government official.

Phone calls to PNB Chief Executive Sunil Mehta as well as to Rao and Sharan went unanswered.

Shares of the 124-year-old bank have lost more than half their value since the fraud came to light.

The Congress president and his mother Sonia Gandhi are not attending Mamata Banerjee’s event; the Congress will be represented by Mallikarjun Kharge and Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Here are the Highlights ahead of Mega Opposition Rally:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee oversees preparations at the venue.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav today said the nation is waiting for a new prime minister and a message of change would go out loud and clear from the the mega opposition rally of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

“This is an anti-BJP rally. So many opposition parties are taking part in it and we are also part of it. It has nothing to do with Uttar Pradesh politics as that is a completely different turf,” Samajwadi Party vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda said. The Congress also said the mega opposition rally should not be confused with political equations in Uttar Pradesh.

The Trinamool Congress party said “regional political compulsions” should not be mixed with the bigger political cause attached with the proposed rally.

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is unlikely to participate in the “united opposition rally” in Kolkata in pursuance of its policy of keeping equal distance from both the BJP and the Congress, a BJD leader said today.

Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik had earlier made it clear that the BJD will not be a part of the Mahagathbandhan, a national level alliance against the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Other leaders expected to be present tomorrow include Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. As part of arrangements, 50 temporary camps have been set up in Salt Lake’s Central Park. Around 2,000 volunteers have been deployed to take care of the supporters while at least 12 CCTV cameras have been installed to ensure their security.

“The people staying here will be provided three course meals on Friday. We have also arranged for blankets. The entire accommodation is under CCTV surveillance and there are medical camps and sufficient fire fighting arrangements. We have also made a separate area for the members of minority community to read Namaz (prayer),” state Fire Minister and local legislator Sujit Bose said.

According to the Trinamool Congress leadership, nearly four to five lakh people have arrived in the city to hear and watch the opposition gain steam at the rally. Apart from bringing thousands of supporters from their respective constituencies, the party leaders have also made special arrangements for their food, lodging, security and other necessary amenities in different parts of the city.

“Close to 70,000 activists have arrived at Sealdah station from different districts of north Bengal since morning. People have come onboard the Katihar Express, Uttar Banga Express, Padatik Express and Kanchan Kanya Express so far. More people will arrive on the Kanchanjunga Express in the evening. Another 7,000 people have arrived at the Kolkata Rail Station (Chitpur),” said state Food Minister Jyotipriyo Mullick, who was supervising the arrival of the party activists at the Sealdah station.

Top leaders including former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Gegong Apang, Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar, Zoram Nationalist Party leader Pu Lalduhawma and JMM leader Hemant Soren have reached Kolkata to attend the United India rally tomorrow.

Top Court Panel Considering 4 Lawyers For Elevation To Delhi High Court

Supreme Court’s decision on advocates Krishnendu Datta and Saurabh Kirpal was deferred

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court collegium has considered four advocates for elevation to the Delhi High Court and has deferred decision on two of the recommended names while the other two have been sent back, according to a resolution posted on the Supreme Court website on Friday.

The four — Krishnendu Datta, Saurabh Kirpal, Priya Kumar and Sanjoy Ghose — were among nine advocates whose names were recommended for elevation by the collegium of the Delhi High Court on October 13, 2017.

As per the January 16, 2019 resolution of the collegium comprising Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices AK Sikri and SA Bobde, its decision on advocates Krishnendu Datta and Saurabh Kirpal was deferred for now and would be taken up after two-three weeks.

However, it said, “having regard to all relevant factors and material on record, the collegium is of the considered view that the proposal for elevation of Priya Kumar and Sanjoy Ghose, advocates, deserves to be remitted to the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. The Collegium recommends accordingly.”

The Collegium had earlier cleared the elevation of five of the nine advocates whose names were recommended.

However, on September 4, 2018, it had decided to defer consideration of the proposal for elevation of these four advocates.

“For purpose of assessing merit and suitability of the these recommendees for elevation to the High Court, we have carefully scrutinised the material on record as well as the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file,” the resolution said.

Tamil Nadu and West Bengal swapped favours in the semi-finals of the girls volleyball competition of the Khelo India Youth Games here on Friday. While Tamil Nadu entered the gold medal round of the Under-21 event at West Bengal’s expense, the team from the eastern state returned the favour in the Under-17 draw. In the semi-finals of the girls Under-21 section, Tamil Nadu got the better of Bengal 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 and were joined in the title round by Kerala, who blanked hosts Maharashtra by a similar 3-0 margin, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22.

The second match was a well-contested one with the Maharashtra girls keeping up with their taller rivals for long periods but in the end, Kerala’s experience told to set up a final against long-time rivals Tamil Nadu.

In the girls Under-17 section, West Bengal beat Tamil Nadu 25-8, 25-20-25-9 to set up a meeting with Maharashtra for the gold medal after the hosts ousted the strongly-favoured Kerala 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 15-25, 15-11 in a pulsating encounter that went on late into the evening.

Top North Korea Envoy Meets US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo For New Nuclear Talks

WASHINGTON:

A top North Korean nuclear envoy began a new round of talks with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and could also meet President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday during a visit aimed at clearing the way for a second US-North Korea summit.

The diplomatic encounter with Kim Yong Chol, Pyongyang’s lead negotiator with the United States, marked a rare sign of potential movement in a denuclearization effort that has stalled since a landmark meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore last year.

Kim Yong Chol and Pompeo, with tight smiles, posed together for photographs at a Washington hotel before heading into the talks that could determine whether the two sides can make headway. There has been no indication of any narrowing of differences over U.S. demands that North Korea abandon a nuclear weapons program that threatens the United States or over Pyongyang’s demand for a lifting of punishing sanctions.

Hours before Kim Yong Chol’s arrival on Thursday, Trump – who declared after the Singapore summit in June that the nuclear threat posed by North Korea was over – unveiled a revamped US missile defense strategy that singled out the country as an ongoing and “extraordinary threat.”

Following his meeting with Pompeo, Kim Yong Chol, a hardline former spy chief, could also go to see Trump at the White House, a person familiar with the matter said.

The high-level North Korean visit could yield an announcement of plans for a second summit, which both Trump and Kim have expressed an interested in arranging.

Their first meeting produced a vague commitment by Kim to work towards the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, but he has yet to take what Washington sees as concrete steps in that direction.

Trump looking for policy ‘win’?

Pompeo had planned to meet Kim Yong Chol to discuss a second summit last November, but the meeting was postponed at the last moment.

At the start of Friday’s talks, Pompeo, joined by Stephen Biegun, US special representative on North Korea, stood alongside Kim Yong Chol at the Dupont Circle Hotel in front of a bookcase with a photo of slain US civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. prominently displayed.

The men did not respond to a reporter’s shouted question of whether a venue for the next summit had been selected. Communist-ruled Vietnam, which has good relations with both the United States and North Korea, has been widely touted as the most likely site.

On his last visit to Washington, Kim Yong Chol delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un to Trump that helped overcome obstacles ahead of the summit in Singapore.

CNN quoted a source familiar with the US-North Korea talks as saying that Kim Yong Chol would be carrying a new letter for Trump.

US-based analysts said that North Korea, which has developed missiles and nuclear weapons in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, would likely be seeking a clearer message from the Trump administration on any concessions it may be willing to make.

“The North Koreans need a real indication of what the US is willing to put on the table,” said Jenny Town, a North Korea expert at 38 North, a Washington-based think tank.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said on Wednesday that if North Korea took concrete steps toward abandoning its weapons programs, Washington could offer a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War, humanitarian aid or a permanent channel for bilateral dialogue.

Victor Cha, a former White House adviser on Asia under President George W. Bush, suggested that Trump may be so desperate for a policy “win” that he could be vulnerable to a bad deal with North Korea.

“I worry that the timing works to North Korea’s benefit,” Cha said, citing pressures on Trump such as the partial U.S. government shutdown and the ongoing investigation into alleged Russian ties to Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Earlier this month, Trump defended the stuttering progress on North Korea by saying that Pyongyang had stopped missile and bomb testing and if it had not been for his administration “you’d be having a nice big fat war in Asia.”

Regional Rapid Transit System Can’t Be At Delhi Government’s Mercy: Top Court

Supreme Court says Delhi government is bound to give the Regional Rapid Transit System. (File)

New Delhi:

The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) — a corridor between Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut — is “absolutely necessary” and cannot be at the “mercy” of the Delhi government, the Supreme Court said today.

A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta said the project was “essential” for people of Delhi as it would help in de-congesting the roads of the national capital and curb pollution.

The top court was told that the estimated cost of the project is Rs 31,902 crore and the Delhi government’s share is Rs 1,138 crore, which it wants the Centre to pay as it has no funds.

Of the 82.15 kilometre long corridor, Delhi will have a 13 kilometre section with stations at Sarai Kale Khan, New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar.

Advocate Aparajita Singh, assisting the court as an amicus curiae in the air pollution matter, told the bench that the “stalemate” continues as the Delhi government wants the Centre to pay their share.

“RRTS is one of the most important projects. This project will help in de-congesting Delhi. No attempt has been made on the part of Delhi government to solve the problem,” the amicus said.

The counsel appearing for Delhi government told the court that they have “problem of funds” for the project.

To this, the bench said, “The project cannot depend on your (Delhi government) mercy. It is essential for Delhi. You are bound to give it. You cannot act like this. These are your duties”.

“Budgetary allocation cannot come in the way of this project. This affects right to life also,” the bench told the Delhi government’s lawyer.

The lawyer said the Delhi government is not agreeable to the “revised alignment” of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor due to a change of station at Sarai Kale Khan from “underground” to “elevated”.

“What study have you (Delhi government) done on this?,” the bench asked, adding: “You cannot say you do not want elevated station. It is not for you or the court to decide. It is for the experts to decide. Underground project will cost more”.

“In our opinion, this project is absolutely necessary,” the bench said.

The court asked Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) to convene a joint meeting of all the concerned stake holders within a week so that these issues could be sorted out.

It said the court should be informed about the outcome of the deliberations and posted the matter for further hearing on February 1.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General ANS Nadkarni, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that RRTS project is important as it would help in solving problem of traffic decongestion in New Delhi.

In its affidavit filed in the top court, Delhi government said that change of plan by national capital region transport corporation (NCRTC) on revised alignment of the RRTS station “would seriously delay the redevelopment of Sarai Kale Khan ISBT (inter state bus terminus)”.

“Once the NCRTC reverts back to its original plan of alignment having underground RRTS station at Sarai Kale Khan, the same will be duly considered by the government of Delhi in a time bound manner,” the affidavit said.

During the hearing, the bench also dealt with the issue of parking policy.

The Delhi government’s counsel told the bench that the “Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Rules” were formulated and its draft was notified on January 24 last year.

“After considering the suggestions/objection received, the draft notification was further revised and proposal for obtaining approval of the competent authority for the issuance of notification of these Rules has been submitted to the Minister of Transport, Government of Delhi,” the affidavit said.

The bench observed that a decision should be taken by the concerned minister within 10 days in this regard.
