Suspended For Anti-Party Activities, Odisha Congress Lawmaker Resigns

Jogesh Singh was reportedly suspended for repeatedly giving statements against the party to the media.

Bhubaneswar:

Odisha legislator Jogesh Singh, who was suspended by the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) for anti-party activities on Thursday, has resigned from the party and stepped down from the membership of the Odisha Assembly.

The Sundergarh legislator’s resignation came two days after Naba Kishore Das, legislator from Jharsuguda, quit the party. Mr Das has joined the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Mr Singh, a two-time legislator, sent his resignation to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is scheduled to visit the state on January 25.

“I tender my resignation from the Indian National Congress Party on moral grounds. I also tender my resignation from the post of the Member of Odisha Legislative Assembly,” Mr Singh said in his letter.

Mr Singh was suspended for repeatedly giving statements against the party to the media, the OPCC said.

Questioning his suspension, Mr Singh added, “I could not find the answer that how praising the Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik, who is ranked as the best chief minister in India, become anti-party activity. I am quite astonished about the decision taken by the disciplinary committee of the Odisha Congress party without any show cause notice and explanation.”

He added that he wasn’t the first person to praise Mr Patnaik as several central ministers of the Congress praised him during the UPA government.

Mr Singh said he had expressed his inability to be part of the Congress president’s meeting in the state capital on January 25, due to some pre-scheduled engagements. “How did it become anti-party activity, I don’t understand,” he said.

Ananta Sethi, OPCC disciplinary committee convener, however said he was not aware of Mr Singh’s resignation, but claimed that it “won’t impact the Congress party in any way”.

Odisha will face simultaneous assembly and national elections in the next few months.

Shikhar Dhawan says, suspended Hardik Pandya is crucial for the Team balance |

Sri Lanka Asks International Monetary Fund To Revive Suspended $1.5-Billion Bailout

The International Monetary Fund has been urging Colombo to ensure economic reforms. (Reuters)

Colombo:

Sri Lanka has appealed to the International Monetary Fund to revive a $1.5-billion bailout suspended during the island nation’s political crisis late last year, the finance ministry said Wednesday.

In October, President Maithripala Sirisena sparked weeks of high political drama, even featuring brawls in parliament, by sacking Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister and dissolving the legislature.

Courts and the parliament subsequently held that the president’s actions were unconstitutional and restored the status quo after more than seven weeks of upheaval that alarmed the international community.

The crisis prompted three international credit rating agencies to downgrade Sri Lanka and the IMF to suspend its bailout programme — that began in 2016 — just as it was about to disburse another instalment.

Sri Lanka’s finance ministry said in a statement the request to revive the bailout was made during talks between Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera and IMF chief Christine Lagarde in Washington on Tuesday.

A Sri Lankan delegation made the request “with a view to stabilising the economy” after the country’s political “disruptions”, it said.

Meanwhile, the IMF said it would send a team to Colombo next month to discuss resuming assistance.

“We discussed the challenging economic environment and the policy priorities for the country,” it said in a statement quoting Lagarde.

“The IMF remains ready to support the Sri Lankan authorities in these endeavours and an IMF team is scheduled to visit Colombo in mid-February to resume program discussions.”

Wickremesinghe told parliament last week that his shock dismissal on October 26 was a “coup” and a “death blow” to the economy. Sri Lanka will have to repay a record $5.9 billion this calendar year, he added.

The Washington-based fund has been urging Colombo — which is emerging from a balance of payments crisis — to conserve its foreign exchange reserves and ensure economic reforms.

Last year, the IMF warned that Sri Lanka was vulnerable to shocks from at home and abroad and stressed that restructuring the island’s loss-making national airline and reforming its energy sector were vital.

One of the biggest drags on the country’s balance sheet is national carrier Sri Lankan, which has accumulated losses and debts of over $2 billion and is a huge burden on taxpayers.

The government has failed to privatise the airline, but the president last week appointed another committee to restructure the loss-making carrier.

Sri Lanka hopes to raise $1 billion from the international debt market, another $500 million from China and Japan and a further $400 million from India.

Kamal Nath Says He Forgives Teacher Suspended For Remarks On Him

Bhopal/Jabalpur:

The suspension of a school headmaster for making a derogatory comment about Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has been revoked on his instructions.

In a statement, Kamal Nath said he has forgiven the teacher.

The district collector suspended Mukesh Tiwari, headmaster of government-run Kanishta Buniyadi Middle School in Jabalpur, on Thursday.

Tiwari had allegedly referred to Kamal Nath as a “daku” (dacoit) during a meeting at the school. He was suspended by collector Chhavi Bharadwaj after a video where he is purportedly seen making the comment appeared on social media.

Mr Nath said in a statement Saturday that after he learnt about the incident, he directed the officials to revoke Tiwari’s suspension.

“I have always been in favour of freedom of expression….the action against him might be correct according to the rules but I am personally forgiving him,” the chief minister said.

“I have directed the district administration to revoke the suspension….He (Tiwari) should decide for himself whether he used right words for a democratically-elected chief minister,” Mr Nath added.

Collector Bharadwaj told PTI that the teacher apologised in response to a show-cause notice, and the chief minister too directed that he should be let off, so the suspension has been revoked.

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul suspended for inappropriate comments, to return home

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Suspended Amid Row Over Sexist Remarks

Edulji had initially suggested a two-match suspension for the duo but referred the matter to the legal cell after Vinod Rai agreed with her and recommended the same.

“It is imperative that players be put under suspension till further course of action is decided for this misconduct as was done in case of (BCCI) CEO (Rahul Johri) when he was sent on leave on sexual harassment matter,” read Edulji’s response to the legal opinion.

Their remarks on the show were also condemned by India captain Virat Kohli, who called them inappropriate.

Earlier on Friday, NDTV sources revealed that Pandya and Rahul have been dropped for the first one-day international against Australia to be played in Sydney on Saturday.

Hardik Pandya’s sexist comments sparked social media outrage and prompted the player to apologise.

Pandya appeared on a popular TV show with teammate K L Rahul, who was a lot more restrained in his responses to questions on women and relationships. Pandya said he “got a bit carried away” as he explained his bragging about his prowess with women on the show that aired Sunday.

On Thursday, COA chairman Vinod Rai had recommended a two-match ban for the duo.

The recommendation came a day after the 25-year-old Pandya posted his apology on social media.

“After reflecting on my comments on Koffee with Karan, I would like to apologise to everyone concerned who I may have hurt in any way,” Pandya posted on Twitter.

“Honestly, I got a bit carried away with the nature of the show. In no way did I mean to disrespect or hurt anyone’s sentiments. Respect,” he added.

Pandya, who was in the squad that beat Australia for the first time in an away Test series, boasted about his success with multiple women.

“You are just watching and observing how they move as I said I am a little from the black side (influenced by West Indies culture) so I have to see how they (women) move first,” he said.

Pandya also said he had bragged to his parents after losing his virginity.

He was quickly slammed for his views on women.

Later on Thursday, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry called for an inquiry to find out whether or not the two sought permission from the BCCI to appear on the show, and if yes, Chaudhry wants to know who gave them the permission.

“The provisions of the earlier contracts and the practice in place would have required these contracted players to seek permission to appear on the show. Was such a permission sought? Was such a permission granted? If so, by whom?” he asked.

Pandya and Rahul also caused a social media stir for comments on the same show when they said current India skipper Virat Kohli was a better batsman than the country’s cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar.

Chicago Restaurant Manager Swings Chair At Black Teen, Suspended

Restaurant manager Matthew Fezzey was suspended after the incident.

John “Kyle” Johnson wasn’t initially planning on entering the Poke Poke restaurant in downtown Chicago, but he walked inside when he saw someone wave to him through the window.

When the black 18-year-old entered the Wabash Avenue restaurant on Jan. 2 with two of his friends, however, he was met with a much less welcoming surprise.

“I’ll kick your a–,” the restaurant’s manager, Matthew Fezzey, yelled toward him, according to Johnson. “This is my place of business.”

Moments later, Fezzey swung a chair at him, Johnson said, hitting his arm with such force that the teen suffered injuries. Johnson then called the police and began filming the encounter.

“I was supershocked, I was scared, thinking: ‘Is this is really happening right now?’ ” Johnson told The Washington Post on Tuesday. “I looked into his eyes, and they were superfurious.”

In the video, Fezzey never denies the allegations that he hit Johnson with a chair. Instead, he repeatedly acknowledges that he was “in the wrong,” and he says the reaction was his “first instinct” after previous encounters with black men at the restaurant.

“Two days ago – and I’m not trying to be racist – two black guys robbed two people right here,” Fezzey explains to Johnson in the video, using numerous expletives in his response.

“But sir, you threw a chair at me,” Johnson responds earnestly. “I’m not those guys.”

“Listen, three days ago, before that, I had two more black guys. I actually fought them in here,” Fezzey replied. “They tried threatening one of my employees, and I had to fight them . . . when you guys came in here, I just got really . . . defensive, really defensive, because I had to fight them off all the time. These security guards over here don’t do a . . . thing.”

The video was posted to Facebook last week and has amassed more than 20,000 views.

Fezzey did not respond to an email requesting comment Monday. Poke Poke Chicago did not respond to an email and numerous phone calls requesting comment on the matter.

In a statement posted to social media on Friday, however, the restaurant apologized and said that as a minority-owned establishment, it doesn’t “tolerate discrimination or racism of any kind.”

“How our manager reacted to the situation was absolutely unacceptable and against what we stand for,” the restaurant wrote. It continued, “Racism has no place in today’s society, and no one should ever be judged by the color of their skin. There are no excuses for what happened to Kyle and for that we apologize.”

Fezzey had been suspended, pending a police investigation, the statement read.

No charges have been filed in the case. Johnson’s attorney, Anish Parikh, told The Post that his client plans to take legal action and that the restaurant’s statement supports the teen’s assertion that he was an innocent victim.

Parikh added that Fezzey should have been terminated, and that his suspension “speaks volumes about their business and the people who run it.”

“This type of behavior, in our opinion, warrants a termination,” he said.

Johnson, a senior at Innovations High School in Chicago, aspires to be a social worker. He said “meditation and prayer” were among the reasons he was able to stay calm throughout the ordeal. The teen received X-rays after the attack, and he said the altercation has taken a psychological toll.

He hopes shedding light on the situation will help facilitate change.

“In any situation where someone would throw a chair at you, it makes you feel like you can’t do anything,” Johnson said, adding that Fezzey was larger than him. “My state of mind was literally, ‘God help me,’ and I just remained calm.”

The teen said he felt “voiceless” when Fezzey threatened to call the police.

“He was screaming at me, saying he was gonna call the cops. . . . I was thinking, ‘Why would you call the cops on me when I didn’t do anything wrong?’ ” Johnson said. “When the police get here, am I going to be held accountable for something I didn’t do?”
