Reaching for the Stars: Why Global NCAP Pushed Safer Cars For India Project

David Ward is the Secretary General of the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) and has been a witness to the sea change in the Indian vehicle safety compared to the first results released by Global NCAP in January 2014.

The Tata Nexon is India’s first 5-Star Crash Rated car as certified by Global NCAP

The first ever five-star car for adult occupant protection is an historic milestone for road safety in India. Tata’s achievement of the coveted fifth star for the Nexon also shows the world that it is possible to ‘Make in India’ if you want excellence in safety engineering. And Mahindra’s first four-star result for the Marazzo shows that a good four-star result is now the new normal in Global NCAP’s Safer Cars for India Project.

This is a sea change for Indian vehicle safety compared with the first results released by Global NCAP in January 2014. Then zero stars was commonplace and the reaction from some in the global car industry was quite hostile. Andy Palmer, then Vice President of Nissan, complained that “people who criticise these cars for not meeting US or European crash standards are living in a dream world”. But things change and dreams come true. Today India is applying United Nation’s crash test and Tata has won the race for the first five-star car. A market for safer cars is growing fast in India and manufacturers are responding. And it is really impressive that Indian brands have grasped the opportunities more quickly than their international competitors.

Mahindra Marazzo has 4-Stars and the second highest overall score of all tested made in India cars. It is now India’s first MPV to get a high score.

This experience shows that the combination of government regulation and consumer information is the winning formula for improved vehicle safety. Global NCAP salutes the actions of the Indian Government to mandate front and side impact standards for new models since 2017 and all cars in production by October next year. In addition, a pedestrian protection regulation is now being applied to new models and to all new cars by 2020. In September at our Global NCAP World Congress in Delhi, the Government also confirmed its commitment to regulate the life-saving crash avoidance technologies, electronic stability control and autonomous emergency braking from 2021. These very positive steps have been combined with important action to promote motorcycle safety by mandating anti-lock brakes and automatic headlights on.

The first round of tests had five made in India cars tested. All came back with zero stars. It included the Maruti Alto 800, Tata Nano, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo and VW Polo. Polo then improved its rating to 4 Stars

Since 2014, it is clear that Global NCAP’s crash tests have succeeded in raising consumer awareness of safety in India. We know now that safety sells. For example, the best-selling version of the Renault Kwid today is the version with an optional airbag. This is in marked contrast to 2014 when some industry representatives argued that there was no market for airbags in the country at all. That is why it is so important that car buyers can obtain crash ratings that will help them to choose the safest car they can afford. With help from our partners Bloomberg Philanthropies, the FIA Foundation, and the Institute for Road Traffic Education, Global NCAP will continue the Safer Cars for India project and encourage the development of a permanent Indian New Car Assessment Programme (INCAP). A permanent INCAP test programme is needed to ensure the widest possible coverage of new models coming into the Indian automotive market which is now the fourth largest in the world.

The Toyota Etios family joined the VW Polo and Tata Zest to also earn 4 Stars. These were the exceptions, with most cars of the 32 crashed to date getting zero stars.

I would also like to pay tribute to the outstanding contribution to the Safer Cars For India project played by Siddharth Vinayak Patankar and NDTV carandbike. From the very first results launch in 2014 to the first five-star car in 2018, CNB has given the inside story on our crash tests and championed improved car safety in India. Their dedication to objective reporting and their commitment to road safety is a superb combination that truly serves the interests of the Indian people. Both CNB and Global NCAP share the mission to make Indian roads much safer. Of course, vehicle safety is just one part of the very large road injury prevention challenge India faces. Action is needed on all fronts including better road design, enforcement, traffic management and safer vehicles. Nevertheless, it is great to see India, its government, and its manufacturers now reaching for the stars in vehicle safety, Four years ago we were dismissed as dreamers but today we can see how dreams become a reality.

2018 Fiat Panda Hatchback Scores 0 Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Test

The 2018 Fiat Panda hatchback, one of the most popular offerings from the Italian automaker has scored a very low 0 star rating in the latest Euro NCAP crash tests.

While the 0 Star Car is still a sad reality in India as we have seen recently with the Renault Lodgy, Europe more often than not has cars that scores a higher 4 or 5 star safety rating across the board. Which is why a 0 Star rated car is most certainly something to report about, even though the car in question is not really relevant to India in general. The 2018 Fiat Panda, one of the most popular offerings from the Italian automaker and also it’s cheapest hatchback has scored a dismal 0 star rating in the recent set of tests conducted by the Euro NCAP. The score on the Fiat Panda is one of the lowest ever seen.

Unlike Global NCAP that tests cars that are made in India too, the Euro NCAP tests have far more parameters. The car goes through the usual frontal offset crash test as for the Indian cars but also has a side impact, a full frontal test and several pedestrian tests too. While the Panda’s compartment remained stable for the frontal offset test, the readings on the test dummy showcased weak chest compression. The test results also showcased that the knee and the femur protection was good but while subjected to a full frontal test, dummy readings indicated weak protection of the head and neck.

Commenting on the results, Michiel van Ratingen, General Secretary, Euro NCAP said, “It is truly disappointing to see a brand-new car being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance. It is high time we saw a product from the FIAT-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors.”

The Fiat Panda also scores really poorly in terms of children safety as tests for various ages showcased poor readings to the head and other parts of the body. Euro NCAP also tests car seats in specific for whiplash protection. Tests on the front seats and head restraints showcased marginal protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear end collision and the rear seats in particular indicated poor whiplash protection. The Panda also scored lower as it does not get any automated emergency braking systems or AED.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Stars As Arsenal Fightback Stuns Tottenham Hotspur

But the fireworks were far from over as Aubameyang’s superb long-range equaliser sparked a second half surge from the Gunners.

Alexandre Lacazette came off the bench to put Arsenal ahead and Lucas Torreira sealed the points with his first goal for the club.

Capping a miserable day for Jan Vertonghen, the Tottenham defender was sent off in the closing stages after earlier giving away Arsenal’s penalty.

“It is a very big match for our confidence. Now we have to continue our process,” Emery said.

“It is a very big victory. We give this to our supporters because it’s a very special match against Tottenham.”

It was only Arsenal’s second win in the last nine league north London derbies and, while stealing local bragging rights is always sweet, this felt like a significant moment for Emery’s team in the bigger picture.

Emery has revived Arsenal since the depressing final years of Arsene Wenger‘s reign.

But losses to Manchester City and Chelsea and a draw with Liverpool had raised questions about Arsenal’s ability to compete for a top four finish.

This stirring comeback was exactly the kind of statement Arsenal needed as they moved above Tottenham into fourth place on goal difference.

Ending their hated neighbours’ six-match winning run showed Arsenal aren’t content to let the balance of power in north London remain with Tottenham.

But Emery warned his side not to get carried away with another big test looming at Manchester United on Wednesday.

“We are happy and enjoying. But Tottenham beat Chelsea but then they lost to us. That is a big example for us as we think about the Manchester United match,” Emery said.

“We know it is very difficult in Manchester. We are going to prepare as best we can. It is a big challenge for us.”

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted his players suffered mentally and physically at the end of a draining week that included vital victories over Chelsea and Inter Milan.

“It was complicated from the beginning of the game. After the third goal it was tough to come back mentally, to find the energy to go again,” he said.

“We started to feel the effort we made in the Champions League and the Chelsea game. It was a big week.”

Biting into challenges and harrying Tottenham into panicked mistakes, Arsenal made a blistering start and their relentless tempo paid dividends in the 10th minute.

Vertonghen jumped with Shkodran Mustafi as they challenged for a corner and the Belgian’s raised arm clearly made contact with the ball as he tried to block the Arsenal defender’s header.

Fever pitch

Referee Mike Dean awarded a penalty and Aubameyang sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the spot for his 11th goal of the season.

Tottenham snatched a 3030th-minutequaliser as the derby reached fever pitch.

Christian Eriksen’s inswinging free-kick caught Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka flat-footed and Dier nipped in to head past Bernd Leno’s weak attempted save.

Dier celebrated by holding his finger to his mouth to indicate the Arsenal fans should keep quiet.

Arsenal substitutes Stephan Lichtsteiner and Aaron Ramsey took exception to Dier’s taunting, prompting a bout of pushing and shoving.

Son Heung-Min’s pace was too much for Arsenal to handle and Rob Holding responded by making a rash sliding challenge on the South Korean four minutes later.

Kane lashed home the resulting penalty for a record-equalling eighth Premier League goal in north London derbies.

Arsenal’s sense of injustice spurred them on and Emery responded by sending on Ramsey and Lacazette, back from a groin injury, at half-time.

They proved inspired moves as Gabon forward Aubameyang conjured a majestic equaliser in the 56th minute.

Tottenham had reverted to their earlier timid performance and Arsenal went ahead in the 74th minute when Lacazette’s shot deflected in off Dier.

Torreira delivered the knockout blow three minutes later and there was still time for Vertonghen to see red in the 85th minute.

French Chef First Woman To Earn Three Michelin Stars In US

French chef Dominique Crenn on Thursday became the first woman in the United States to earn three Michelin stars for her modernist San Francisco restaurant Atelier Crenn.”It’s an amazing recognition,” an elated Crenn told AFP after the announcement was made by the Michelin Guide. “Amazing for my team and all the work we have done over the years.” Crenn said she had been celebrating, drinking rose wine all day, and planned to party further with guests and her team later in the evening.

“Who knew that one day Dominique Crenn will get three Michelin stars with her team,” she gushed.

Crenn said she hoped her success would inspire young woman to push ahead with their dreams.

“I tell them today, ‘You can do anything you want to do’, it has nothing to do with gender,” she said. “Go out there and just do it.

“Never let someone stand in your way.”

SingleThread, another restaurant in the Bay Area, was also awarded three stars.

The Michelin Guide said in a statement that it was impressed by the food scene in the San Francisco area, especially as concerns this year’s laureates.

“In particular, the teams at Atelier Crenn and SingleThread should be extremely proud, as our inspectors were very impressed by the quality of the produce used in the preparation of the dishes,” it said. “This, along with their meticulous attention to detail, creativity, and dedication to delighting their customers, means they always offer diners a memorable and very enjoyable gastronomic experience.

“Without a doubt, they are definitely worth a special journey!”

The distinction bestowed on Crenn is a sweet rebuke for the 53-year-old chef, who was snubbed earlier this year by the 50 Best Restaurants guide.

Crenn, who grew up in France, has said that she inherited her interest in cuisine from her parents, who enjoyed fine dining.

She began her formal kitchen training in San Francisco in 1988 and in 1997 moved to Indonesia, heading the kitchen at the InterContinental Hotel in Jakarta.

She moved back to California in 1998, working as executive chef at a Manhattan Beach restaurant for several years.

Atelier Crenn was launched in 2011, quickly earning its first Michelin star and a second in 2012.

Yasir Shah Stars As Pakistan Beat New Zealand To Level Three-Match Series

“I came to know yesterday (about Imran Khan’s record) so it’s an honour that my name will come with him,” said Yasir.

“I haven’t bowled as well as this, especially with the pitch offering turn and bounce like it did. We wanted to put the disappointment of the first Test behind us and set up the series.”

Yasir’s figures are the second best match return ever for Pakistan in Test cricket, bettered only by former captain and current prime minister Imran Khan who took 14/116 against Sri Lanka in Lahore in 1982.

They are also the best by a Pakistani bowler against New Zealand, beating Waqar Younis’s 12/130 in Faisalabad in 1990.

Medium-pacer Hasan Ali was also at his best, taking 3/46 as Pakistan gained a measure of revenge for losing the first Test by four runs in Abu Dhabi last week.

Resuming on 131/2 and needing a further 197 to make Pakistan bat again, the New Zealand batsmen, led by Ross Taylor (82), Henry Nicholls (77) and Tom Latham (50), dug in to make things tough for the Pakistani bowlers.

Taylor smashed Hasan’s first ball of the day to the cover boundary to reach his 29th half century in Tests, a welcome return to form having scored just 21 runs in the three innings of this series.

Latham completed his 15th Test fifty but was dismissed the following ball, a little edge behind off Hasan, television umpire Ian Gould confirming that Sarfraz Ahmed had taken the catch cleanly.

Harry Nicholls came to the crease and set about frustrating the Pakistan bowlers, adding 52 with Taylor for the fourth wicket and 57 with BJ Watling for the fifth.

Taylor tried to take the attack to the bowlers, hitting seven boundaries and a six in his 82 but grew impatient after being tied down. An attempted sweep off Bilal Asif ended in a top edge that looped to deep backward square leg where Yasir took a comfortable catch.

Yasir trapped Watling leg before for 27 to end another frustrating the stand and get into the Kiwi tail. De Grandhomme made just 14 and Sodhi was bowled behind his legs for four, unwisely trying to sweep Yasir from well outside off-stump.

Nicholls stood firm amid the wreckage, striking Bilal Asif for a straight six, before Yasir nipped one between bat and pad to bowl him for 77.

It was a brave stand from Nicholls but as skipper Kane Williamson later admitted, the damage had been done in the first innings when New Zealand lost all 10 wickets for just 40 runs in 14 overs.

“We batted better in the second innings,” said Williamson. “But that session yesterday, Yasir put us under tremendous pressure and put the ball in the right areas and got us for 90. That low first innings total was always a factor.”

The end came swiftly as Yasir picked up the last two wickets in the space of four balls, Neil Wagner caught at midwicket, another man trying to sweep, and Trent Boult feathering an outside edge to Sarfraz behind the stumps.

The third and final Test starts in Abu Dhabi from Monday.

Bahrain Royal Sued For 16 Million Pound Over Deal To Meet Bollywood Stars

The hearings continue at the High Court in London.

Washington:

A Bahraini royal told England’s High Court on Monday he was “astonished” at being sued over an alleged deal for access to top Bollywood stars.

Sheikh Hamad Isa Ali Al Khalifa is alleged to have struck a contract with Egyptian entrepreneur Ahmed Adel Abdallah Ahmed to pay for meetings with 26 top actors from the Indian film industry.

The deal was allegedly worth 35 million pound and Ahmed is suing the royal for 16 million pound he claims he is owed in fees and costs.

Sheikh Hamad said he has a “lifelong passion” for Bollywood cinema and wanted to meet stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh and Aishwarya Rai.

In his witness statement, the royal said he paid Ahmed about 2.7 million pound for meetings with Bollywood idols, but only because he “wanted to please him”, rather than due to any contractual obligations.

“When I learned of the claims that Mr Ahmed was making against me in these proceedings, I was astonished,” he said.

“I was grateful to (Mr Ahmed) for helping me to meet four top Bollywood artists.

“I expressed my gratitude frequently by words and my gestures: in total, he received around 2.7 million pound from me in relation to these meetings.

“I considered this sum was comfortably in excess of the amount that he had incurred in costs and expenses, including in fees for the Bollywood artists.

“I do not think that this gives him licence to demand vast sums of money to which he is not entitled.”

Ahmed claims that, during a phone conversation when Sheikh Hamad was in London in January 2016, the pair made an “oral agreement” that he would be paid more than 1 million pound for each meeting, plus a bonus of more than 350,000 pound after every third meeting.

Sheikh Hamad contends the alleged arrangement is “entirely fictitious”.

The hearings continue at the High Court in London.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma And Other Indian Stars Undergo First Training Session In Brisbane

Cricket Australia also posted a picture of Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli sweating it out in the field.

Among others, premier Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Krunal Pandya and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik were seen having a chat.

Earlier in the day, team India head coach Ravi Shastri vowed that skipper Virat Kohli will not tone down his passionate approach despite Australia’s new, polite approach when the two teams battle it out in the four-Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that begins on December 6 at Adelaide Oval.

“He won’t take his foot off the gas that is for sure,” he warned. “He loves coming to Australia, he’s passionate about his game and the pitches here suit his style of play.”

Shastri added that his team has learned from their losses in series defeats against other Test nations in 2018 as well as from four years ago in Australia and his current squad is well-placed for success.

Following the T20Is series, India will play Australia in four-match Test series, with the inaugural match slated to take place in Adelaide from December 6.

The visitors will end their tour with the third and final ODI on January 18, 2018.

New Discovery Shows Glass Made From Exploding Stars

A supernova occurs when a large star burns through its own fuel (Representational Image)

Paris, France:

The next time you’re gazing out of the window in search of inspiration, keep in mind the material you’re looking through was forged inside the heart of an exploding ancient star.

An international team of scientists said Friday they had detected silica — the main component of glass — in the remnants of two distant supernovae billions of light years from Earth.

Researchers used NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope to analyse the light emitted by the collapsing mega-cluster and obtain silica’s “fingerprint” based on the specific wavelength of light the material is known to emit.

A supernova occurs when a large star burns through its own fuel, causing a catastrophic collapse ending in an explosion of galactic proportions. It is in these celestial maelstroms that individual atoms fuse together to form many common elements, including sulphur and calcium.

Silica makes up around 60 percent of the Earth’s crust and one particular form, quartz, is a major ingredient of sand.

As well as glass windows and fibreglass, silica is also an important part of the recipe for industrial concrete.

“We’ve shown for the first time that the silica produced by the supernovae was significant enough to contribute to the dust throughout the Universe, including the dust that ultimately came together to form our home planet,” said Haley Gomez, from Cardiff University’s School of Physics and Astronomy.

“Every time we gaze through a window, walk down the pavement or set foot on a sandy beach, we are interacting with material made by exploding stars that burned millions of years ago.”

In 2016, scientists reported they had found traces of lithium — a metal used in the manufacture of many modern-day electronics — at the heart of exploding nova, a phenomenon that occurs when a white dwarf star absorbs hydrogen from a nearby sun.

The study was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
