Amarinder Singh Lashes Out At Navjot Sidhu, Says Everyday Our Jawans Are Shot

“It was wrong of him to have shown affection towards the Pakistan Army Chief,” Amarinder Singh said.

New Delhi:

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s hug for Pakistan army chief has been censured not only by the BJP but also his boss, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. A former captain in the Indian Army, Amarinder Singh made it clear that he deeply disapproved such a display of affection towards the chief of Pakistan army.

Mr Sidhu – the only one of the three former cricketers to accept Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s invitation on his oath ceremony – has been at the receiving end of severe criticism after he was seen sitting next to Pakistan’s top leaders, and later hugging General General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

The cricketer-turned politician had countered, indicating that he was wrong footed by the General.

“If someone (Pak Army Chief General Bajwa) comes to me and says that we belong to the same culture and we will open Kartarpur border on Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th Prakash Parv, what else I could do?” said the Punjab minister, who returned from Pakistan through the Wagah border this afternoon.

One of the holiest shrines of Sikhs, believed to be the resting place of Guru Nanak, the Gurdwara is just three km from the border. But Pakistan closed it to Indians after army’s surgical strikes against terror camps across the Line of Control.

The Captain, however, was not having any of it. “Every day our jawans are getting martyred. To hug their Chief General Bajwa… I am against this. The fact is that the man should understand that our soldiers are being killed. My own regiment lost one Major and two jawans a few months ago and everyday somebody is being shot,” Mr Singh said.

He said while the seating arrangement was not in the hands of Mr Sidhu, “It was wrong of him to have shown affection towards the Pakistan Army Chief“.

Narrating the sequence of events to NDTV, Mr Sidhu had said the three services chiefs of Pakistan had introduced themselves to the guests and the conversation with General Bajwa had started with small talk.

He went on to say that Pakistan wanted peace – statements, which New Delhi contends, fly in the face of its intelligence agency ISI’s support to terrorists. The General then followed it up with the promise to open the corridor to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur. “It was a dream come true,” Mr Sidhu had told NDTV.

The BJP had launched a scathing attack on Mr Sidhu even before he reached India.

“Mr Sidhu is not an ordinary man but a minister in the Punjab government. And every Indian has taken this issue very seriously,” BJP’s Sambit Patra had said, questioning whether Congress chief Rahul Gandhi will suspend him.

Pakistan Summons Indian Diplomat JP Singh Again Over Alleged “Ceasefire Violations”

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire in 2003, however, both accuse each other of skirmishes.

Islamabad:

Pakistan on Saturday summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh and condemned the “unprovoked ceasefire violations” by the Indian forces along the Line of Control (LoC) which resulted in the death of a civilian.

The Foreign Ministry said that a 65-year-old man was killed while a boy was injured in Indian firing on August 18 in Dana Sector along the LoC.

“The Indian forces along the Line of Control and the Working boundary are continuously targeting civilian populated areas with heavy weapons,” Director General at the South Asian desk of the Foreign Ministry Mohammad Faisal who summoned the Indian diplomat said. Mr Faisal also serves as spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Giving update of the cross-LoC shelling, the Foreign Ministry said in 2018, the Indian forces have carried out more than 1,900 ceasefire violations along the LoC and the international border, resulting in the deaths of 31 innocent civilians while injuring 122 others.

“This unprecedented escalation in ceasefire violations by India is continuing from the year 2017 when the Indian forces committed 1970 ceasefire violations,” he said in a statement.

The spokesman said the “deliberate targeting of civilian populated areas” is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity, international human rights and humanitarian laws. The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation,” Faisal told the Indian deputy high commissioner.”

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire in 2003, however, both accuse each other of skirmishes.

The spokesman urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 ceasefire arrangement, investigate this and other incidents of ceasefire violations, and instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire, in letter and spirit and maintain peace on the LoC and the Working Boundary.

He urged that the Indian side should permit UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.

Hope Imran Khan As PM Will Be Good for Pak-India Ties: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Islamabad:

Indian cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today hoped that his friend Imran Khan’s accession to the prime minister’s post will be good for Pakistan-India peace process.

Wearing a blue suit and a pink turban, Mr Sidhu was among the special guests present at the newly elected Imran Khan’s oath taking ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (the President House) in Islamabad today.

Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, after arriving at the ceremony, went to the front row of the guests where Mr Sidhu was seated and hugged him. The both of them chatted briefly and warm smiles were exchanged. They hugged once more.

Talking to the state-run PTV, Mr Sidhu used his usual poetic expression to praise Mr Khan.

“A new morning is here in Pakistan with a new government which can change the destiny of the country,” said Mr Sidhu, a minister in the Congress government in Punjab.

He hoped that Mr Khan’s victory will be good for the Pakistan-India peace process.

The ties between the two countries had strained after the terror attacks by Pakistan-based groups in 2016 and India’s surgical strikes. The sentencing of alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav to death by a military court in April last year further deteriorated bilateral ties.

Mr Sidhu arrived in Lahore yesterday via the Wagah border. He travelled from Lahore to Islamabad to attend the ceremony.

Welcoming the “change” in Pakistan’s democracy with the election of Mr Khan as prime minister, Mr Sidhu on his arrival in Pakistan said the newly elected PM should come forward in peace initiative between the two neighbours.

He said he has brought “a message of love” to Pakistan as a goodwill ambassador of India.

“I have come here not as a politician but as a friend. I have come here to take part in the happiness of my friend (Imran),” he had said, adding sportsmen and artistes help bringing the people of two sides closer.

“Hindustan jeevay, Pakistan jeevay,” he chanted while reading a verse.

Talking about the qualities of Mr Khan, the former cricketer said: “I have seen Khan converting his weaknesses into his strength. I wish Imran becomes a symbol of prosperity (for his country).”

Replying to a query on the gift he has brought for the former Pakistan Test captain, Mr Sidhu said: “I have brought a Kashmiri shawl for Khan sahib.”

Former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev whom Mr Khan had invited on his swearing-in had declined the invitation citing personal engagements.

Navjot Singh Sidhu famous controversies
