Asia Cup 2018: VVS Laxman says for India Pakistan Match, Shoaib Malik can be key player

Shoaib Malik Key For Pakistan In 2018 Asia Cup, Says VVS Laxman

Asia Cup 2018: Shoaib Malik Key For Pakistan, Says VVS Laxman

Former India batting legend VVS Laxman has backed Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik to perform well against India during the upcoming Asia Cup cricket tournament. “Yeah, the reason he does well against India is his experience, he is a good player of spin bowling because in the middle invariably India will look to attack with the spinners and they’ve got two quality risk spinners now in, Chahal and Kuldeep while Pakistan is evidently dependent on their opener Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam at number 3,” Laxman was quoted as saying by Star Sports. Laxman also asserted that Malik will need to play a major role with the bat if Pakistan are to do well in the tournament. “Shoaib Malik is someone who would look to play the anchor role because he has got ability to rotate the strike, play down the ground, taking easy singles,” he said.

“But at the same time when he presses the accelerator, he can play the big shots and he has got abundance of experience and he is a champion as far as the wide ball is concerned,” he added.

The six participating nations are divided into two groups, A and B. Group A consists of India, Pakistan and Hong Kong while Group B includes Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The top two nations from each group will enter the Super Four stage of the tournament. Top two teams in the super four section will advance to the final.

India begin their Asia Cup campaign against Hong Kong on September 18 in their Group A fixture at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. India will play Pakistan the next day at the same venue.

The final of the Asia Cup will be played on Friday, September 28.

Shoaib Malik Bats For More India vs Pakistan Matches

Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik on Saturday said that India and Pakistan should play more matches against each other and feels that it would not only provide entertainment for fans of both countries but also for the rest of the world. Shoaib Malik further stated that the matches would bring people of both countries closer to each other. The Asia Cup 2018 starts on September 15 with Bangladesh taking on Sri Lanka in the opening match of the tournament that will be held in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. However, all eyes will be on the India vs Pakistan match slated for September 19.

“It is in the benefit of all if both India and Pakistan play a maximum number of matches against each other as it brings entertainment not only for the people of the two countries but also for the rest of the world. It also brings the people of India and Pakistan closer to each other,” ANI quoted Malik as saying to Dawn.com.

“The cricketers of India and Pakistan are professionals and they want to give their best on the field against each other. And off the field, they like to behave like friends and we take meals together,” the right-handed batsman added.

Reflecting on the omission of batting all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez from the team ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2018, Malik said the best way to deal with it is to perform well in the domestic circuit.

“As a cricketer, everybody faces such problems in their career. And the better way to deal with it is to perform on the domestic circuit and also to hold table-talk with the authorities concerned to have their [player’s] reservations if any exists, removed,” he said.

The Asia Cup clash will be the first time these two countries meet after Pakistan’s shock win over India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and Malik feels the key to winning the match would be to play without any extra pressure.

Malik added that the upcoming 2019 World Cup would be his last ODI tournament, while he intends to prolong his T20I career till the 2020 World T20.

India is celebrating their 72nd Independence Day today and sportspersons have taken to social media greeting their fans with inspirational messages and quotes. Indian tennis star Sania Mirza on Wednesday also took to Twitter wishing the nation Independence Day. However, it was her reply to husband and Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik’s message that caught everyone’s attention in India and across the border. “Wishing Indians all over the globe (specially the one at home) a very #HappyIndepenceDayIndia”, Shoaib had captioned on Twitter to which Sania replied with an “Awe” message.

Sania has put her career on hold as she is expecting her first child with her husband Shoaib in October. The former doubles World No.1, who is aiming to be back on the court for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, had said that she has always lived her life on her own terms and never followed the ‘traditional women route’ in her life. Sania is also a winner of six Grand Slam doubles titles, including the 2015 Wimbledon ladies’ doubles with Martina Hingis. Sania and her cricketer husband Shoaib got married in 2010.

Earlier in the day, Sania also posted a short video message revealing the time she got freedom. “The day I won the first point for my country on international turf was the day I got freedom from my naysayers. That was #MyIndependenceDay. When was yours?”, she had posted on her official Twitter account.

Sania had undergone a knee surgery last year and her last competitive tennis appearance was in October 2017.

Shoaib Akhtar Celebrates 42nd Birthday, Wishes Pour In For ‘Rawalpindi Express’

Shoaib Akhtar was a nightmare for the best batsmen in world cricket during his time. His pace and bounce were the key ingredients which even kept batting legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara on the hop. Known as ‘Rawalpindi Express,’ Shoaib’s 42nd birthday was celebrated by the cricket fraternity on social media by recalling his greatest achievements. “He’s regarded as the fastest bowler of all time, reaching a top speed of 161.3kmph, and claimed 444 international wickets. Happy birthday to the Rawalpindi Express, @shoaib100mph,” ICC said.

One of the fans also revealed that every Pakistan citizen has a wrong birth date on their identity cards and he hopes it is not the same with Shoaib Akhtar.

“Habitually, every Pakistani has an incorrect birthday stated on their ID cards and I am hoping the same from you. Anyways, Happy Birthday Quicky! @shoaib100mph #ShoaibAkhtar.”

Shoaib Akhtar, who had clocked at 161.3 km per hour against England in 2003 at Newlands, still holds the record for the fastest delivery in cricket. He is followed by Shaun Tait (161.1), Brett Lee (161.1), Jeff Thomson (160.6) and Mitchell Starc (160.4) in the chart.

Shoaib had claimed 178 wickets in Test cricket, 247 ODI wickets and 19 in Twenty20 Internationals.

He also represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for one season.

Shoaib Akhtar Pays Ultimate Compliment To Virat Kohli After Scintillating Ton

The fiery pacer praised Virat Kohli for his dedication and determination and said that the Indian skipper was the benchmark for the other batsmen around the world to follow.

India had got off to a solid start in the morning as openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan chalked up a half-century partnership but the visitors were then rocked by three swift strikes by left-arm swing bowler Sam Curran.

Curran, playing in his only second Test, dismissed Vijay, Dhawan and KL Rahul in the space of nine runs.

Though India limped to 76 for three at lunch, the post-lunch session bought no respite with all-rounder Ben Stokes picking up two wickets to reduce the visitors to 100-5.

However, Kohli refused to give in despite wickets tumbling all around him.

Making the most of the two dropped catches by England at 21 and 51, Kohli let out a huge roar in celebration after belting the ball off Stokes for a boundary to bring up his century.

He was soon slipping off his wedding ring from around his neck and kissing it in a defiant message to his critics who had blamed for his poor form during the 2014 England series, when he averaged just 13.40, to his now wife Anushka Sharma.

He continued to punish the England bowlers to notch up 22 boundaries and a six during his 225-ball knock.

India’s last two wickets added 92 runs before Kohli was finally last man out after he misjudged leg spinner Adil Rashid’s delivery and was caught by Stuart Broad at point.
