Malabar Tamarind (Kudam Puli) For Weight Loss: How To Consume Garcinia Cambogia To Shed Kilos

  • Kudam puli or Garcinia is a souring agent used in curries in Kerala
  • Garcinia Cambogia contains phytochemical which blocks fat production
  • Dried and smoked Garcinia rind can be used to make fat burning drink

Weight loss may be a difficult goal to achieve, but with the right kind of diet and the right amount of exercise, you can shed kilos faster. There are a number of fruits and vegetables which may expedite weight loss by various methods including blocking the body’s ability to store fat and even suppressing appetite. Garcinia Cambogia, commonly known as Malabar tamarind, is one such fruit. Malabar tamarind or kudam puli is a tropical fruit which has been gaining considerable attention for its purported weight loss benefits. The fruit looks like a small pumpkin and its colour varies from green to yellow. The fruit is well known in Southeast Asia, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and the fruit is also made into a supplement, which is now sold commercially. Along the coast of these states, the fruit is often put to culinary use which is similar to that of the regular tamarind or Tamarindus indica.

The fruit is known as uppage in Kannada language and it is traditionally used as a souring agent in the preparation of some curries. Many traditional recipes use the fruit’s extract and rind due to the sour flavour that it lends to the food. It is similarly used in Assam as well as in Thailand, Malaysia, Burma and other Southeast Asian countries. The weight loss benefits of the fruit first came to light when in 2012, American celebrity doctor Dr. Oz promoted the extract from the fruit to achieve natural weight loss. Other purported benefits of the fruit include boosting energy, detoxification of the body and promoting cardiovascular and digestive health.

Malabar Tamarind For Weight Loss: Does It Work?

The claimed weight loss effects of Garcinia Cambogia are credited to the presence of a phytochemical called Hydroxycitric acid or HCA. Some studies have shown that the phytochemical has the ability to burn fat and suppress appetite. HCA works by blocking an enzyme called citrate lysase, which is used in the body to make fat. Moreover, it is also known to increase the release of the hormone serotonin in the brain, which makes you feel less hungry. A study published in the Journal of Obesity said that people who consumed Garcinia supplement were able to lose two pounds (about 0.90 Kg) more than people who didn’t take the supplement, which is a very minor difference. This is why scientists have concluded that more research and study on Garcinia is required to ascertain its role in weight loss.

However, other research studies conducted on mice using Garcinia Cambogia supplement concluded that it may help lower levels of insulin in the body. Some studies have even shown the role of Garcinia Cambogia in lowering the levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides in the body.

How To Consume Garcinia Combogia or Kudam Puli For Weight Loss

Kudam puli or Malabar tamarind rind is usually sun dried and then smoked to a dark brown or black colour and is then used to prepare a drink, which is claimed to burn fat. Usually, to make the drink the rind is first washed and then soaked in some water for about 10 or 15 minutes. Then you can take some water in a stainless steel or clay pan and transfer the soaked kudam puli to it. Cook this for some time, until the water comes to a boil. Allow it to cool down and filter the drink into a jar. Consuming this drink 30 minutes before each meal, may help you lose weight faster.

Indian-Origin Professor In UK, Husband Kept Man In Shed For 4 Years

Pritpal Binning and her husband allegedly kept a Polish builder in a garden shed for 4 years.

An Indian-origin couple from southern England has been arrested for allegedly a Polish builder in their garden shed for four years.

Palvinder and Pritpal Binning, both in their mid-50s, were arrested by the UK’s Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) earlier this week after a raid on their home in Chilworth, near Southampton on southern coast of England.

GLAA officers said they acted after a frail Polish man told staff at a walk-in healthcare centre in Southampton that he had been forced to work in exchange for food.

The Binnings have since been released under investigation, pending further enquiries. GLAA, the workers’ watchdog, said its officers also searched the property and seized evidence which may prove critical to the investigation.

“Following the two arrests we made, our investigation is ongoing as we examine and assess the evidence we collected from the property,” said GLAA Senior Investigating Officer Tony Byrne.

“It’s really important that people get in touch if they believe someone is being exploited. By contacting us, we can ensure that some of the most vulnerable people in society are protected and supported,” he said.

The man told officers that he had been sleeping on a plastic sun-lounger deck chair in the shed at the bottom of the garden and was given out of date food to eat. He also said he had no flushing toilet and that his kitchen was a fridge and barbecue.

The man, aged in his 40s, has been taken into the UK government’s National Referral Mechanism, a process for ensuring victims of modern slavery and human trafficking are given help and support.

“First and foremost, we are pleased that the man is now receiving the help and support he so desperately needs. In the 21st century, no-one should be forced to live in such degrading and disgusting conditions,” GLAA’s Tony Byrne added.

The operation, carried out on October 30, was supported by officers from Hampshire Police in charge of the Test Valley area.

Fibre is a non-digestible, plant-derived carbohydrate that comes in two forms: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibres mix with water from the food we eat and result in the formation of a gel in the stomach, which reduces the production of cholesterol in our body. Whereas, insoluble fibres are known as roughage and their main function is to make the stool bulky, which makes it easier to defecate. According to a Delhi-based nutritionist, Dr. Ritika Samaddar, “Fibre is a very important part of our daily diet and if you are losing weight, then it is important to load up on foods that are rich in fibre. Insoluble fibres are generally recommended to the ones who are trying to lose weight. An average adult should take about 15 grams of fibre every day.”

Low In Calories

Horse gram is very low in calories and is categorised under negative calories foods (digesting these foods takes up more calories than what they inherently contain). If you are trying to lose weight, you can consume horse gram as much as you want, but remember moderation is the key. Moreover, the high protein and fibre content of horse gram will keep you fuller for a long time.

India Must Shed ‘Largest Arms Importer’ Tag, Says Defence Production Secretary Ajay Kumar

Public-private partnership in defence in the country is being encouraged to step up arms exports

The secretary in the department of defence production (DP) Ajay Kumar today said India has overtaken China as the world’s largest arms importer and should shed the tag.

He said the public-private partnership in defence in the country is being encouraged to step up arms exports and licensing system in some items that had been liberalised.

“India is the world’s largest arms importer, a place which earlier belonged to China”, he said over video conference from Delhi at a seminar organised by Bharat Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

Mr Kumar said, “If China could (reduce dependence on imports productions) then why cannot India”?

Citing the instance of Mexico, he said the central American country has established a huge aero-manufacturing base and exports to the US and Europe.

According to MR Kumar, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are responsible for 74 per cent of the global arms trade. “What part of that pie we need to have?” he asked, adding that many countries were willing to buy arms from India.

Mr Kumar said that testing infrastructure would be set up for the private sector also.

Former chief of Air Staff Arup Raha said, “unfortunately India continues to depend on imports for high-end weapon systems”.

Want To Lose Weight? Eating Right May Help You Shed Those Kilos

According to a study, choosing the wrong meal could leave you craving for more. When it comes to crushing hunger, it’s not about when you eat; it’s about what you eat. If you wish to lose weight, curb your appetite by avoiding the foods that make you hungrier. Losing weight is a gradual process and it needs a lot of patience and hard work to achieve your goals. It means you have to eat the right food and exercise right in order to ensure a healthy weight loss. Moreover, you have to lead a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Someone has rightly said, you are what you eat. If you eat wrong foods like processed fatty foods, fried foods, tans-fat foods, et al, chances are you may suffer from obesity. On the other hand, eating right foods like fibre-rich foods and protein-rich foods may keep you healthy and help you lose weight.

We enlist a few foods that you may be eating wrong-

1. Salads

Salads are the epitome of diet-friendly meals; however, if you miss out on a mix of healthy foods and choose just one food-group in your salad, chances are that you are not getting enough satisfying sustenance to keep you going through the day. So if you are adding cucumber, kale, and spinach, you must also add protein (boiled eggs, chicken, salmon or legumes), with slow-burning carbs (roasted sweet potato, corn or brown rice) and a little fat (feta, nuts, seeds or avocados) can help settle those hunger pangs.

2. Salty snacks

Snacks preserved with sodium are generally highly refined, without filling you up. So if you think you are eating ‘healthy diet chips,’ you must know that these are actually not healthy, courtesy sodium. Excessive sodium can cause water retention, leaving your body bloated up. Also, sodium leaves you extremely thirsty.

3. Juices

Commercially-bought or homemade fruit juices may look like the perfect options for gulping down to lose weight; however, they may actually not help in any way. Whenever you juice a fruit or vegetable, it tends to leave the fibres behind, making it useless, especially if you are looking to lose weight. It is best to have whole fruits and vegetables than gulping a glassful of juice.

4. Protein bars

Commercially bought protein bars may look like the healthiest snack, but they have high amounts of sugar that tend to add more calories. Even if you wish to enjoy protein bars, make sure you make them at home. Here’s a list of protein bars you can make at home.

Avoid unhealthy diet practices and eat a healthy diet and engage in exercises to lose weight.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Said He Shed No Tears in NYT Interview

Elon Musk is denying that he cried during a recent interview with The New York Times in which he described how he’d become overwhelmed by the stress of running electric car company Tesla.

On Twitter on Tuesday, Musk acknowledged his voice cracked once during the interview. But, he added, “That’s it. There were no tears.”

Musk was responding to a Forbes article shared on Twitter and written by Amy Nelson, the founder and CEO of workspace company The Riveter. Nelson wrote that she doesn’t think she could cry in an interview, given the double standards that men and women face in the business world.

Times Finance Editor David Enrich, meanwhile, said on the social media site that the paper stands by its description of Musk’s emotions during the interview.

Earlier this week, a Canadian court ruled in favour of Tesla after the electric carmaker challenged the province of Ontario’s wind-down of an electric vehicle rebate.

In a ruling on Monday, Judge Frederick Myers of Ontario struck down the transition programme set up by the new Ontario government, which excluded Tesla customers from qualifying for rebates.

A Tesla spokeswoman welcomed the decision.

“Tesla only sought fair treatment for our customers and we hope the Ministry now does the right thing by delivering on its promise to ensure all [electric vehicle]-owners receive their incentives,” the spokeswoman said in an email on Tuesday.

Fights Stress: Cocoa has been known to fight stress and improve mood. When you’re stressed, you don’t have the energy to work out in a proper manner, which may also hamper weight loss.

Boosts Heart Health: Cocoa powder has been known to fight blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, as well as fight build-up of plaque in the arteries. This results in a reduced risk of heart stroke and other heart diseases.
