India Must Shed ‘Largest Arms Importer’ Tag, Says Defence Production Secretary Ajay Kumar

Public-private partnership in defence in the country is being encouraged to step up arms exports

Kolkata:

The secretary in the department of defence production (DP) Ajay Kumar today said India has overtaken China as the world’s largest arms importer and should shed the tag.

He said the public-private partnership in defence in the country is being encouraged to step up arms exports and licensing system in some items that had been liberalised.

“India is the world’s largest arms importer, a place which earlier belonged to China”, he said over video conference from Delhi at a seminar organised by Bharat Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

Mr Kumar said, “If China could (reduce dependence on imports productions) then why cannot India”?

Citing the instance of Mexico, he said the central American country has established a huge aero-manufacturing base and exports to the US and Europe.

According to MR Kumar, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are responsible for 74 per cent of the global arms trade. “What part of that pie we need to have?” he asked, adding that many countries were willing to buy arms from India.

Mr Kumar said that testing infrastructure would be set up for the private sector also.

Former chief of Air Staff Arup Raha said, “unfortunately India continues to depend on imports for high-end weapon systems”.

Want To Lose Weight? Eating Right May Help You Shed Those Kilos

According to a study, choosing the wrong meal could leave you craving for more. When it comes to crushing hunger, it’s not about when you eat; it’s about what you eat. If you wish to lose weight, curb your appetite by avoiding the foods that make you hungrier. Losing weight is a gradual process and it needs a lot of patience and hard work to achieve your goals. It means you have to eat the right food and exercise right in order to ensure a healthy weight loss. Moreover, you have to lead a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Someone has rightly said, you are what you eat. If you eat wrong foods like processed fatty foods, fried foods, tans-fat foods, et al, chances are you may suffer from obesity. On the other hand, eating right foods like fibre-rich foods and protein-rich foods may keep you healthy and help you lose weight.

We enlist a few foods that you may be eating wrong-

1. Salads

Salads are the epitome of diet-friendly meals; however, if you miss out on a mix of healthy foods and choose just one food-group in your salad, chances are that you are not getting enough satisfying sustenance to keep you going through the day. So if you are adding cucumber, kale, and spinach, you must also add protein (boiled eggs, chicken, salmon or legumes), with slow-burning carbs (roasted sweet potato, corn or brown rice) and a little fat (feta, nuts, seeds or avocados) can help settle those hunger pangs.

2. Salty snacks

Snacks preserved with sodium are generally highly refined, without filling you up. So if you think you are eating ‘healthy diet chips,’ you must know that these are actually not healthy, courtesy sodium. Excessive sodium can cause water retention, leaving your body bloated up. Also, sodium leaves you extremely thirsty.

3. Juices

Commercially-bought or homemade fruit juices may look like the perfect options for gulping down to lose weight; however, they may actually not help in any way. Whenever you juice a fruit or vegetable, it tends to leave the fibres behind, making it useless, especially if you are looking to lose weight. It is best to have whole fruits and vegetables than gulping a glassful of juice.

4. Protein bars

Commercially bought protein bars may look like the healthiest snack, but they have high amounts of sugar that tend to add more calories. Even if you wish to enjoy protein bars, make sure you make them at home. Here’s a list of protein bars you can make at home.

Avoid unhealthy diet practices and eat a healthy diet and engage in exercises to lose weight.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Said He Shed No Tears in NYT Interview

Elon Musk is denying that he cried during a recent interview with The New York Times in which he described how he’d become overwhelmed by the stress of running electric car company Tesla.

On Twitter on Tuesday, Musk acknowledged his voice cracked once during the interview. But, he added, “That’s it. There were no tears.”

Musk was responding to a Forbes article shared on Twitter and written by Amy Nelson, the founder and CEO of workspace company The Riveter. Nelson wrote that she doesn’t think she could cry in an interview, given the double standards that men and women face in the business world.

Times Finance Editor David Enrich, meanwhile, said on the social media site that the paper stands by its description of Musk’s emotions during the interview.

Earlier this week, a Canadian court ruled in favour of Tesla after the electric carmaker challenged the province of Ontario’s wind-down of an electric vehicle rebate.

In a ruling on Monday, Judge Frederick Myers of Ontario struck down the transition programme set up by the new Ontario government, which excluded Tesla customers from qualifying for rebates.

A Tesla spokeswoman welcomed the decision.

“Tesla only sought fair treatment for our customers and we hope the Ministry now does the right thing by delivering on its promise to ensure all [electric vehicle]-owners receive their incentives,” the spokeswoman said in an email on Tuesday.

Cocoa powder will help you to lose weight

Cocoa powder is often confused with chocolate, but the two products are very different. Cocoa powder is made by grinding cocoa beans and contains no fat or sugar. Meanwhile, chocolate contains cocoa butter, cocoa and sugar among other ingredients. The percentage of cocoa in chocolate determines how healthy or unhealthy the product is. This is why dark chocolate is considered one of the healthiest snacks out there. This is because it has the highest percentage of cocoa in it. Meanwhile, white chocolate is not really a chocolate as it’s made from milk solids, cocoa butter and sugar. Consuming cocoa powder on its own is the healthiest way to consume cocoa in its purest way.

Here are some reasons cocoa powder can help you in weight loss:

Boosts Metabolism: Cocoa has been known to boost metabolism and help the body metabolise fat better. This is why fitness trainers often advise people to add cocoa powder to their pre-workout protein shakes.

Fights Inflammation: Cocoa powder may improve digestion, due to its anti-inflammatory action on the gut. A healthy gut has been directly linked with weight loss.
Helps in Detoxification: Due to the presence of antioxidants like flavonoids, cocoa powder is great for detoxification of the body. Cocoa powder is also rich in fibre, which is good for regulating blood sugar and removing waste content from the body.

Fights Stress: Cocoa has been known to fight stress and improve mood. This may have a direct impact on your weight loss, as the level of stress may be directly proportional to the fat around your belly. When you’re stressed, you don’t have the energy to work out in a proper manner, which may also hamper weight loss.

Boosts Heart Health: Cocoa powder has been known to fight blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, as well as fight build-up of plaque in the arteries. This results in a reduced risk of heart stroke and other heart diseases.

Maldives Wants To Shed “Excessive Indian Influence”: Chinese Media

India has had considerable influence in the Maldives, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean

Beijing:

The Maldives asking India to take back its military helicopters and personnel deployed there reflects the country’s “increasing desire to rid itself of the excessive Indian influence”, Chinese state media has said.

A commentary in the Global Times said it was wrong on the part of Indian diplomats and security officials to think that the move by the island nation came at the behest of China, which does not interfere in any country’s internal affairs.

The paper said the move also sends a signal to the Quad bloc — consisting of India, Australia, the US and Japan — in the Indo-Pacific that plans to “contain” China. The revival of the bloc unsettles Beijing.

Last week, the Maldivian ambassador told a media outlet that his country has asked India to take back military helicopters and personnel posted there following the expiry of a pact in June.

India has had considerable influence in the Maldives, an archipelago which sits near the world’s busiest shipping lane in the Indian Ocean.

However, their ties have come under strain under the government of Abdulla Yameen who is said to be pro-China, which unnerves India.

“New Delhi has long regarded the South Asian island nation as its backyard and sphere of influence, with a strong desire to tighten its grip on the capital city of Male and exclude other countries” influence,” the paper said.

“As an independent sovereign country, the island republic increasingly desires to rid itself of excessive Indian influence and maximize its interests by developing diplomatic ties with all major powers.”

“The request for the withdrawal of the helicopters and personnel is an embodiment of such a desire and sends an important message to all major powers in the Indo-Pacific region,” according to the article.

China, which opened its embassy in the Maldives in 2011, is involved in building big infrastructure projects in the country, which is of immense strategic significance in the Indian Ocean.

“The Maldives doesn’t want to become a certain country’s sphere of influence or take sides between major powers, nor other South Asian and Southeast Asian smaller nations. China opposes a spheres-of-influence order of the kind that dominated the Cold War,” the Global Times said.

After laying claims on the South China Sea and building infrastructure in the contested waters, China has increasingly been sending ships to the India Ocean, which has worried New Delhi.

“Any attempt to seek or sustain a sphere of influence in the Indo-Pacific region, such as India’s desire to strengthen its control over the Maldives or the US Indo-Pacific strategy, is doomed to fail, as it runs counter to the development demands of countries in the region,” the article said.

Can Popcorn Help You Shed Extra Kilos? Heres The Answer

Highlights

  • Popcorn is a snack that is high in fibre and low in calories
  • Do not choose the butter-laden flavours available in the markets
  • You can add some herbs and spices to enhance the taste of your popcorn

Is snacking on popcorn a healthy option for weight loss? The answer is yes! Surprisingly, adding popcorn to your diet can actually help you shed some extra kilos, especially if you are trying to lose weight. On one side, popcorn is a snack that is high in fibre and low in calories, as compared to most snack food items. But, if you add a dollop of butter, cheese or caramel – like the one we get in movie theatres – then you may be getting more calories than you asked for. Out of all the snack foods out there, popcorn stands at the top of our list. However, these days this famous snack has gotten a bad reputation, all because of the movie-theatre variety, which is loaded with calories and other ingredients like butter and cheese topping.

popcorn full

The popcorns we get in movie theatres are loaded with calories.

Snacking between meals is not a bad thing. It fuels you until you have your next meal, plus it is the best way to add some other food groups to your diet. Popcorn may help you lose weight as it is low in calorie. It is definitely a better snack option than potato chips and butter cookies. It is naturally fat-free and sugar-free, so one can savour it without feeling guilty. Moreover, popcorn can really make us feel full for longer time, keeping our hunger pangs at bay. This way, overeating can be avoided. But, make sure you don’t count on those chocolate- or caramel-flavoured popcorns as those will definitely reverse the effect!

According to a renowned food writer, Meher Mirza, “Popcorns are really a low-calorie food that can speed up your weight loss process. By this, I certainly don’t mean the popcorn available at movie theatres or the microwave popcorns, the huge tubs that come dripping with butter or that odd cheese-powder creation. I mean a cup of good, home-popped popcorn, which is made without oil and butter. This version of popcorn will only bring you to about 30 calories a cup. You may season them with a dash of salt and chilli powder and you are sorted.”

Microwave popcorns or the huge tubs that come dripping with butter or cheese are not healthy.

Popcorn is made of 100% natural whole grain. Being whole grain, it contains fibre, which helps in improving digestion. The high fibre content keeps our body’s bowel movements regular and keeps constipation at bay. A fibre-rich diet is also known to take off excess cholesterol from the walls of blood vessels in your body. This can reduce your overall cholesterol level, which protects you from heart ailments and other diseases.

As per Macrobiotic Nutritionist and Health Coach, Shilpa Arora, “Fibre in popcorn slows carbohydrate metabolism into sugar, therefore, lowering insulin response. Popcorn is a great healthy snack for diabetics and for the ones who are looking to lose weight. However, one should be careful not to choose the butter-laden flavours available in the markets. This could be misleading and lead to serious health issues. Make sure good quality corns are selected.”

You can add some herbs and spices to enhance the taste of your popcorn.

So, the next time you munch on these little white kernels, make sure you don’t eat the microwave popcorn or the popcorn that is filled excessively with salt and butter. Go for the plain popcorn that is healthy for you, moreover, you can add some herbs and spices to enhance the taste of your popcorn.

Dosa and upma are two of the most loved south Indian dishes that are made from semolina or suji, and when it comes to desserts, the rava kesari or suji ka halwa or sheera is also very popular. Suji is made from rough, coarsely ground whole wheat, and hence, is healthier than our refine wheat preparations. Semolina For Weight Loss

According to the USDA data, a 100-gram of unenriched semolina contains just about 360 calories and zero cholesterol. If you wish to use semolina in order to lose weight quickly, clinical nutritionist, Dr. Rupali Dutta, suggests that one should be conscious about which type or suji or semolina flour they are picking up from the market. This is because the suji they pick may have been made from refined flour, which doesn’t have much fibre in it, or it may be made from whole wheat, which is healthier. So, make sure you make the right choice and pick up only high fibre suji. Dr. Dutta also suggests consuming suji along with either a protein source like milk or pairing it with fibrous foods like vegetables. So, if you are fond of eating dishes made from suji, then add lots of protein-rich and high-fibre foods to it like sprouts and black chana.
