VIDEO: Manipur Pacer takes 10 Wickets in an innings, people recalls Irfan Pathan instead of Anil Kumble

Richard Madley Recalls His IPL Career Highlight And It Involves MS Dhoni

Richard Madley was the auctioneer for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 10 years. However, the Welshman Madley was “dropped” from the forthcoming IPL auction by the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) which is slated to take place on December 18 in Jaipur. Madley recently tweeted that he has not been invited to auction the IPL this year and it was not his decision. He also said that in cricketing terms he was dropped. As soon as he made the announcement of Twitter fans from all over India replied him to say that they will miss him.

One of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans also took the chance to ask Madley about his favourite moment from the lucrative IPL.

Madley to this replied that selling former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the inaugural edition of the league was his career highlight.

For the upcoming IPL auctions, flamboyant Australian batsmen Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch had opted out, largely owing to Australia’s hectic schedule in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup, according to reports by ESPNcricinfo.

Among the Indians, Yuvraj Singh – after a dismal IPL 2018 – will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1 crore. And Mohammad Shami, Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha – who has been out of the Indian team due to a streak of injuries – also enter the auction with a Rs 1 crore base price.

Another Indian cricketer who deserves notable mention is Jaydev Unadkat, who will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore. Unadkat was surprisingly the most expensive Indian in last year’s IPL, having been bought for Rs 11.5 crore by the Rajasthan Royals.

U.S. Prosecutors Investigate Hyundai, Kia Vehicle Recalls

The South Korean firms had recalled nearly 1.7 million vehicles in 2015 and 2017 in the United States citing an engine failure.

U.S. prosecutors are investigating if Hyundai Motor and affiliate Kia Motors’ vehicle recalls over engine defects were conducted properly, according to a person with knowledge of the matter and documents reviewed by Reuters. The South Korean firms, together the world’s No.5 automaker, recalled nearly 1.7 million vehicles in 2015 and 2017 in the United States in one of their biggest recalls in the country, citing an engine failure that increases the risk of a crash. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), part of the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ), has launched a criminal investigation, the person told Reuters. It remains to be seen whether the probe will lead to charges, the person added.

If criminal charges are filed, it could lead to hefty fines for Hyundai and Kia. The DoJ is coordinating with the U.S. transport regulator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on the investigation, the person said, asking not to be identified as the matter is confidential. Nicole Navas Oxman, a DoJ spokeswoman, declined to comment. “The Justice Department generally does not confirm, deny or otherwise comment on the existence or non-existence of an investigation,” she said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

The United States has previously investigated and imposed strict penalties on other automakers such as Toyota Motor and Volkswagen AG. In 2017, a U.S. judge dismissed a criminal charge against Toyota after it completed three years of monitoring under a $1.2 billion settlement in which it admitted to misleading the public about sudden unintended acceleration in its vehicles. The settlement was the largest penalty levied by the United States on an auto company until Volkswagen admitted to diesel emissions fraud and paid $4.3 billion in fines in 2017. Apart from the SDNY probe, Hyundai and Kia are also the subject of an investigation by NHTSA into whether their recalls covered enough vehicles and were conducted in a timely manner.

NHTSA has “active” investigations into engine issues related to certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles, the regulator told Reuters. “These investigations are ongoing – no final conclusions have been reached,” it added. Hyundai declined to comment on the SDNY probe. An investigation by U.S. prosecutors will add to Hyundai and Kia’s woes at a time when they are grappling with sluggish sales in the United States and China.

The pair have already set aside roughly 1 trillion won ($885 million) in 2017 and 2018 to cover costs mainly stemming from recalls over engine problems. In the United States, Hyundai recalled 470,000 Sonata sedans in 2015 due to the failure of “Theta II” engines. In 2017, it expanded its U.S. recall to 572,000 Sonata and Santa Fe sport utility vehicles, citing the same engine issue, the NHTSA said.

Kia also recalled 618,160 Optima, Sorento and Sportage vehicles which use the same engine in the United States. However, Kim Gwang-ho, an engineer at Hyundai and a company veteran of 26 years, told NHTSA that the companies should have recalled more vehicles in 2015, citing an internal report.

Dwayne Bravo Recalls Contract Fallout With Windies Cricket Board, Says N Srinivasan Offered To Pay

Former Windies captain Dwayne Bravo on Friday opened up about the 2014 tour to India where the tour had to be called off after the fourth ODI due to a contract dispute between the players and their national cricket board. During a chat show on i955fm, a Trinidad-based radio station, Dwayne Bravo said that the then-BCCI chief N Srinivasan had asked him to “take the field” and offered to pay the Windies team whatever they were losing out on. “I remember fully well before we said we weren’t going to play the first game, 3 am in the morning, I get a message from the BCCI boss, the old one, Mr [N] Srinivasan, that ‘please take the field'”, ESPNcricinfo quoted Bravo as saying to i955fm.

“I listened to him – and woke up at 6 am to tell the team that we have to play. And everyone was against playing. Everyone thought that I panicked and chickened out and all these things,” Bravo further said.

“Yeah, they (BCCI) understood, of course. Because they were very supportive of all of us. Actually they even offered to pay us whatever we were losing. We was like, ‘we don’t want you to pay us. We need our board to sort out our contracts.’ The BCCI was very, very supportive and that is one of the reasons why most of us were still able to continue playing without any serious, serious problems taking place,” Bravo added.

The players had threatened to quit the tour as they were sent on the India tour with a 75 percent cut in the contracts without negotiating with any players.

However, Bravo said that it was a unanimous decision by the Windies players to “walk away from the tour”.

“Collectively as a team, we decided what to do. I listened to every single player. Apart from one player, everyone signed on a piece of paper, that they were all in support of leaving the tour. But we did not just decide to walk away from the tour. There were different times when we tried to reach out to both our WIPA president (Wavell Hinds) and the cricket president (Dave Cameron, Cricket West Indies president),” Bravo said.

“So we threatened [to pull out] from the first game, but we played. We threatened for the second game, but we played. The [fourth] game we went out (the whole team accompanied Bravo to the toss), so it was just a message and a signal, trying to let them know that we are not happy with whatever is going on,” Bravo further added.

VVS Laxman Recalls 281 Against Australia, Says Never Played For Others’ Expectations

Former India batsman VVS Laxman believes it’s not just the historic 281-run knock against Australia that defined him as a cricketer. According to the 44-year-old ‘Very Very Special’ batsman, there have been many knocks in his illustrious 16-year-long career that have made him feel even better. Laxman, who became India’s most fearless batsman against a daunting Australian team, has rated the 167-run knock against the Kangaroos in Sydney on the top of his favourite knocks. Having opened the innings for India, Laxman scored his first international hundred against Australia at their backyard in 2000.

“From 1996 to 2000, I never had a hundred. I never ever felt I was able to establish myself in the Indian team. If I had not got that 167, probably I would not have got another chance to play. The fashion in which I got these runs and against quality bowling on a challenging wicket and tough conditions gave me the confidence,” Laxman said at the release of his autobiography ‘281 and Beyond’ in Hyderabad on Thursday.

“It removed doubts and apprehensions I had about my game. I started to feel that I belong to international cricket and that I can go out and perform against the best bowlers,” he added.

In 2001, Laxman made headlines after he scored a knock of 281 against Australia at Eden Gardens. He established a record stand with Rahul Dravid to set up a remarkable victory for India after following on.

As expectations heaped upon him following the match-winning heroics in Kolkata, Laxman learnt how he could deal with it. “I learnt after the first 4 years of struggle at highest level that especially in our country you can’t afford to fall into a trap. Everyone will have expectations. I never played game to fulfil expectations of others.”

For Laxman, to give up as an opening batsman was the toughest decision that he made in his career. Laxman was included as an opener in the Indian team in 1996. He said he took it up as a challenge. But after being dropped in 2000, he realized his true potential and went back to play domestic cricket for Hyderabad to improve himself as a middle-order batsman.

“I told myself that I am going to lead the life as a first-class cricketer. I decided I will work hard but I will never ever open the batting. It was toughest decision because there was no guarantee of getting into playing XI of India,” he said.

With the Indian batting line-up well decorated with batsmen like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammed Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly, Laxman cemented his place and went on to score 8781 runs for India in 134 Test matches. He scored 17 Test centuries, six of which came against Australia.

England pacer Stuart Broad recalled his worst nightmare of being hit for 6 sixes in an over by Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh during the ICC World T20, which was held in the year 2007. Stuart Broad, did so after the official Instagram account of the England Cricket Board (ECB) posted the picture of Sam Curran asking, “Ever seen someone smash six sixes before they hit their first four?” Replying to the post, Broad said, “@yuviofficial?”

The England Cricket Board (ECB’s) post on Instagram came after all-rounder Sam Curran smashed six sixes before his first boundary in his 64-run knock against Sri Lanka during the first Test in Pallekele.

Courtesy of Curran’s knock and a brilliant half-century from Jos Buttler (63) on top of the order, England managed to score 290 runs in the first innings after opting to bat.

For Sri Lanka, Dilruwan Perera was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 4/61.

In response, hosts Sri Lanka managed to get 336 runs on board in the first innings.

England lead the three-match Test series 1-0.

Netherlands Recalls Embassy Staff After Threats Over Asia Bibi’s Lawyer

Asia Bibi’s lawyer, Saiful Mulook had fled to the Netherlands citing death threats.

ISLAMABAD:

The Netherlands recalled staff from its embassy in Pakistan following threats after providing shelter to the lawyer of a Christian woman in a blasphemy case, the Dutch foreign minister said on Monday.

Hard-line Islamists in Pakistan have blocked streets and called for the killing of judges after the Supreme Court on Oct. 31 overturned the conviction of Asia Bibi, a mother of five, who had been on death row for eight years.

“Unfortunately threats have been made against the Netherlands, Dutch diplomats,” Foreign Minister Stef Blok told national NPO radio. “I discussed the issue with my Pakistani colleague.”

The embassy briefly closed earlier on Monday and “a large number of staff” returned to the Netherlands, Blok said.

Bibi’s lawyer, Saiful Mulook, fled to the Netherlands soon after the verdict, citing death threats. The Dutch government said on Thursday that it had offered him temporary shelter.

On Friday the Dutch government said its embassy in Pakistan, which is in a tightly guarded diplomatic enclave, had temporarily halted issuing visas “due to circumstances beyond our control”.

Pakistani media reported that the embassy had been forced to close because of threats. But the Dutch Foreign Ministry said reports of the embassy’s closure were mistaken.

No one answered the telephone at the Dutch embassy after office hours on Monday.

Bibi, 53, was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 over allegations she made derogatory remarks about Islam, which is punishable by death in Pakistan. She always denied having committed blasphemy.

The militant Tehreek-e-Labaik (TLP) party, which has made blasphemy a rallying cry, took to the streets after the Supreme Court ruling and blocked main cities and highways for three days.

The protests ended after the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan struck a deal with the TLP that the state would not block a petition to review Bibi’s acquittal in light of sharia Islamic religious law and ensure she wouldn’t leave country until that was decided.

Pakistani government officials have said Bibi is in a secure location while the court considers her case.

“We All Just Trampled”, California Bar Shooting Survivor Recalls

On Thursday, 12 people including a cop were shot dead in a shooting at a night club close to Los Angeles.

University freshman Cole Knapp was talking with friends inside the Borderline Bar and Grill in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks when he saw a man dressed in black reach towards the counter by the door as if he was paying his cover charge.

“I just kind of saw it in the corner of my eye and I heard a gunshot and I focused on him and I saw that he was holding a handgun and he continued to shoot at the girl at the front desk,” Knapp, 19, told Reuters TV.

It was sometime after 11 p.m. PST on Wednesday night when Ian David Long, a 28-year-old former U.S. Marine, walked into the Western-themed bar on “College Country Night” and fired off round after round seemingly at random from his .45 caliber Glock handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine.

Knapp, a student at nearby Moorpark College, ducked behind a pool table with a few other people, he said, even as some patrons kept line dancing, apparently unaware of the gunfire around them.

He bolted toward an exit onto a smoking patio, filled with more people who hadn’t heard the gunshots over the loud music “and I told them get over that fence and just run.”

A SWAT team from the Ventura County Sherrif’s Department, arrived within minutes, along with the FBI and other officers to find the bar strewn with bodies, survivors huddling in terror, and others desperately trying to get out.

“They found people hiding in restrooms, people hiding in attics,” Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said. Other witnesses described people using bar stools to break windows and escape.

Alexis Tait, 23, said she heard what sounded like firecrackers going off until she saw her friend Kristina Kaylee Morisette fall to the floor – one of a dozen people the gunman killed.

Tait, who says she’s a regular at the bar, then saw people huddled by a mirror and window and fled there.

“We were all bodies on top of each other and as soon as we saw him (the shooter) walk … into the other part of the bar, everyone bolted as fast as they could to get out,” Tait said.

Tait said she also saw people break windows with bar stools and jump out.

“We all just trampled and tried to get out,” Tait said. “All we could think about was like we need to get out.”

Harley-Davidson Recalls More Than 2.3 Lakh Bikes Worldwide

A query by Carandbike to Harley-Davidson India remains unanswered whether any bikes sold in India will be among the affected models.

Harley-Davidson issues massive recall over clutch issue

Harley-Davidson has ordered a massive recall on 2,38,300 motorcycles worldwide for a clutch problem, and it’s the fourth recall for a clutch issue in the past five years. According to Harley-Davidson, the recall will cost about $35 million, although the cost of the recall will not be borne by Harley-Davidson entirely, as the issue arose with a third-party supplied component. The voluntary safety recall includes all model-year 2017 and 2018 Touring, Trike and CVO Touring models, as well as some 2017 Softail models.

A few models in Harley-Davidson’s Softail range are also reportedly affected, although the models affected by the clutch issue are of the 2017 lot, and not the 2018 Fat Bob pictured above

Harley-Davidson announced the recall during a conference call with investors last week, amid a global sales slowdown. Recently, Harley-Davidson announce several new models, including an all-new electric model line, and a completely new, small displacement model for Asia and emerging markets which will be introduced by 2022. But the latest recall seem to have hit the iconic American motorcycle brand’s image once more on quality concerns.

“We, along with our dealers, are committed to addressing this issue. The safety of our riders is our highest priority,” Harley-Davidson’s Chief Financial Officer John Olin said during a conference call with analysts.

2017 harley davidson road glide special

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide is one of the Touring models, although it isn’t clear if any bikes sold in India are affected by the recall

Over the past few years, Harley-Davidson had issued several such recalls for clutch issues. In 2016, a recall on another clutch issue covered 27,232 bikes across 14 different models. That recall followed another recall in 2015 of 45,901 bikes, also for clutch issues, and in 2013, there was a recall of 29.046 bikes over yet another clutch issue. The earlier recalls were all due to an issue where the master cylinder lost its ability to disengage the clutch.

The affected bikes are expected to be spread across Harley-Davidson’s overseas markets as well, including Europe, one of Harley’s biggest export regions. A query to a representative of Harley-Davidson India by Carandbike remains unanswered whether any bikes sold in India will be among the affected models. In any case, the fully-imported Touring and CVO Touring models constitute a very small percentage of Harley-Davidson India’s sales, but the Softail range is quite popular, next only to the highest-selling Street range in India.
