After Harish Meena, Rajasthan BJP Lawmaker Habibur Rahman Joins Congress

Habibur Rahman (R) joined the Congress at the party’s office in Jaipur today.

Jaipur:

In a setback to Rajasthan’s ruling BJP ahead of the December 7 Assembly elections, the party’s Nagaur MLA Habibur Rahman yesterday returned to the Congress after a decade.

Mr Rahman joined the Congress at the party’s office in Jaipur in presence of Ajmer MP Raghu Sharma and other leaders, the same day BJP’s Dausa MP Harish Chandra Meena joined the grand old party in New Delhi.

Mr Rahman was initially a member of the Congress and was a state minister between 2001 and 2003 during the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government. He joined the BJP in 2008 after he was denied a ticket by the Congress.

He won the 2008 and the 2013 Assembly elections as BJP candidate. But when the BJP denied him poll ticket this time and gave nomination to Mohan Ram Choudhary from Nagaur, Mr Rahman left the ruling party.

“I have returned home today. There is no condition for joining the party,” he said at a press conference.

On whether he will contest the Assembly elections, Mr Rahman rhetorically asked, “Who does not want to contest elections?”

However, Congress MP Raghu Sharma said the party will release its list of candidates for the Rajasthan polls only after the final approval of party president Rahul Gandhi.

Meanwhile, slamming Harish Chandra Meena for joining the Congress, BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kirori Meena termed the former “an opportunist” and claimed that this would not have any impact of the saffron party’s performance in the state election.

“There will be no impact. People know who is an opportunist and opportunists can go anywhere,” Kirori Meena said.

Hitting back, Congress’ Raghu Sharma said, “Kirori Meena’s wife Golma Devi was a minister in the previous Congress government. He contested the 2013 assembly polls as the candidate of National People’s party and then joined the BJP. He became Rajya Sabha MP and now his wife was given ticket by BJP in its first list. He is the finest example of opportunist.”

Harish Chandra Meena joined the Congress in New Delhi in presence of former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, the party’s state unit chief Sachin Pilot and All India Congress Committee’s state in-charge Avinash Pande.

A former IPS officer, who headed state police during the Ashok Gehlot government, Harish Chandra Meena had joined the BJP in March 2014 ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and was pitted against his brother Namonarain who was then a Union minister.

He had won the Dausa seat by defeating his nearest rival Kirori Lal Meena, who was then a candidate of National People’s Party by a margin of 45,404 votes while Namonarain Meena had stood third.

Congres’ Sachin Pilot, Ashok Gehlot Will Both Contest Rajasthan Polls, Deny Rift

Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot made the announcement at a press conference in Delhi.

New Delhi:

Both Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot will contest the December 7 Rajasthan election, it was revealed in a joint press conference by the two Congress leaders amid reports of a widening rift in the party.

“Both, I and Sachin Pilot will fight the Rajasthan assembly elections,” Ashok Gehlot, a former chief minister, told reporters in Delhi, Sachin Pilot by his side.

Sachin Pilot added: “On Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s instruction and on Gehlotji‘s request, I have decided to contest the assembly elections.”

Who among the two would contest the election has been the subject of much speculation in the run-up to the polls. Both are seen as the main candidates for chief minister in the Congress, which hopes to win back the BJP-ruled state riding on what it sees as anti-incumbency.

The party was seen to be reluctant to field both, to avoid an inevitable tussle for the top post if it does win.

A section in the party believed that both leaders should stay out of the contest and focus on campaigning across the state as they are seen as crowd-pullers.

Another section felt both should contest – Ashok Gehlot from his seat Sardarpura and Sachin Pilot from a seat in Ajmer – his old parliamentary constituency – or Dausa, from where his father was an MP.

This morning, in a significant boost for the Congress, the BJP parliamentarian from Dausa, Harish Meena, quit his party and joined the Congress.

The Congress in Rajasthan is believed to be deeply divided between factions loyal to Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot.

Results in Rajasthan will be declared on December 11.

BJP Lawmaker Harish Meena From Rajasthan Joins Congress Weeks Before December 7 State Election

Harish Meena was police chief in 2009-2013, among the longest for any top cop in Rajasthan.

Jaipur:

Harish Meena, a BJP parliamentarian in Rajasthan and former top police officer, has quit his party and joined the Congress, weeks before assembly polls in the state.

Harish Meena, 64, is the MP from Dausa. A former Director General of Police, he had joined the BJP in 2014.

His exit is seen as a big blow to the BJP, which is fighting for another term in Rajasthan.  “I am happy that Harish Meena has decided to join the Congress in such times. I welcome him in the Congress fold,” senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said at a press conference.

Mr Meena’s brother Namo Narayan Meena is in the Congress. The Meenas are an influential community in Rajasthan and among the most significant voters in east Rajasthan. Meena voters dominate politics and government services.

Harish Meena was police chief in 2009-2013, among the longest for any top cop in Rajasthan.

Rajasthan: Election Commission gave unique election symbol for candidate

http://zeenews.india.com/

http://zeenews.india.com/

http://zeenews.india.com/

Rajasthan polls: list of Congress nominees came not yet

BJP Says No Candidate Denied Ticket Due To “Caste, Religion” In Rajasthan

Jaipur:

After Bharatiya Janata Party’s first list for the Rajasthan assembly election failed to include a Muslim candidate, the party said Monday that no one was denied an election ticket due to religion or caste.

“It has been the Congress’ policy to distribute tickets on the basis of caste and religion, but the BJP does not believe in any such thinking,” party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said at a press conference in Jaipur

BJP’s first list of 131 candidates, released late Sunday night, did not feature a Muslim candidate, prompting the Congress to accuse the party of side-lining the community.

Replying to a question on the mediation of spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case, Mr Trivedi said the government was ready to accept all the suggestions and solutions given by anyone on the issue.

Mr Trivedi said BJP never made Ayodhya dispute an election issue and asked the Congress to clarify its stand. “The government will help in resolving all the hurdles coming before building the Ram temple, but the issue is now pending before the Supreme Court,” he added.
