Steve Waugh Compares Virat Kohli To Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Calls Him A “Great Player”

Virat Kohli was recently in the spotlight for the wrong reason, precisely for asking a cricket lover — who expressed his fondness towards Australian and English batsmen — to “leave India”. But now here’s some praise being showered on the Indian captain by Australian veteran Steve Waugh, who said “Kohli is like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara“. In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, he said, “He is a great player and he loves these big moments. He is like Tendulkar and Lara. They wait for these and that’s where they want to show their best. He will be the dangerman straightaway but they have some pretty good batsmen.”

Team India coach Ravi Shastri recently said that the current Virat Kohli-led team is “the best Indian side in the last 15 years.” But seems Waugh and Shastri aren’t really on the same page. Speaking in reference to Shastri’s comments, Waugh said he is “not sure” if the current Virat Kohli-led team is any better than some of the Indian sides that he has played against during his days.

“Look I have played against some great Indian sides and I am not sure that the current side is better than the ones we played against,” he said. He understood that Shastri wanted to boost the morale of his team but he felt that sweeping comments could have been avoided.

“I am not really sure but probably not a great thing to say as it puts extra pressure on the team. Once they start losing, they will get a lot of criticism for that. Look, it’s good that Ravi Shastri believes in his side but comments like these could be kept to himself,” he added.

The former skipper known for his mental disintegration tactic feels that Australia despite recent problems would be hard to beat in their own den.

“Australia will be hard to beat in Australia. We have a bowling attack as good as any team in world cricket and we can take wickets. It’s our batting if we score 350 runs in first innings, I think we will be very hard to beat. And someone will always come and do well and that’s the nature of the sport. I am still pretty confident that we can win in Australia but it’s going to be a close series though,” Waugh said about the Test series starting December 6.

Speaking about India’s chances Down Under, he said, “Actually, India have quite a rounded team and they will see this as a significant chance. They would have prepared for this tour for a long time. I think it is going to be really close series,” he added.

Not Enough Evidence Against “Top India Player” To Complete Investigation, Says BB Misra

Former IPS officer BB Misra has spoken about the problems he faced while investigating the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal. Misra, who was a member of the Justice Mukul Mudgal panel that looked into the controversy that shook Indian cricket, told PTI from Bhubaneswar he had a lead about a “top India player” being in contact with a bookmaker. However, the lack of evidence stopped him continuing his investigation. “Yes, I was investigating a lead that I got about a top India player being in touch with a bookie. However, I didn’t have enough evidence,” Misra said on Friday.

“Let me clarify time was never an issue as Supreme Court was very co-operative and had we sought more time, we would have got that. But since the bookie in question didn’t part with evidence, I had no option but to stop investigations,” Misra said.

Did he speak to the player in question? “I didn’t speak to just one player but multiple players. Let’s leave it at that.”

Misra revealed bookie’s reason for not giving out evidence was because he feared for his life and that a lot of dangerous people were involved.

“But when I asked for the evidence, he backtracked saying that a lot of dangerous people were involved and he feared for his life.

“He chose not to part with the evidence that he claimed to have in his possession. I had to close the investigation. So again I must state that time was never an issue,” Misra said.

On whether he met the bookie in person, he replied: “Let’s not get there.”

Misra said that conjectures shouldn’t be drawn about what is written about the nine players in the sealed envelope that the Mudgal committee submitted to the Supreme Court at the end of its probe.

Misra also said that he is ready to share all his investigative leads with the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit chief Ajit Singh, who has been in touch with him.

“Ajit Singh was my senior in Indian Police Service. When he called me after reports emerged, I told him ‘sir I am shifting base from Delhi to Bhubaneswar and I will need some time to settle down’,” said Misra.

“Once I settled down, I called Mr Singh but he was in Dubai for the Asia Cup. That was the last I heard from him. Now I will be writing a mail that I am ready to discuss my findings at that point in time,” said Misra.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney Among MLS Most Valuable Player Finalists

England’s Wayne Rooney, Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez were among five finalists named on Wednesday for Major League Soccer’s 2018 Most Valuable Player Award. Hours before the North American league began its playoff championship run, the league announced finalists for its season awards, topped by the MVP race, which also includes Mexico’s Carlos Vela and Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron. Zlatan scored 22 goals and added 10 assists — only the fourth 20-and-10 season in MLS history — but the Los Angeles Galaxy just missed out on a playoff berth.

Rooney revived DC United after his mid-season arrival, lifting the club from last place into a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference and a playoff spot. The former England and Manchester United star netted 12 goals and assisted on seven others in 18 matches.

Vela, a World Cup starter fior Mexico, scored 14 goals and added 13 assists to spark Los Angeles FC to the best season by any first-year expansion club in league history.

Rooney, Zlatan and Vela are also the finalists for Newcomer of the Year, a pro player who made his MLS debut this year.

Martinez shattered the MLS record with 31 goals this season for Atlanta United while teammate Almiron, last year’s Newcomer of the Year, contributed 12 goals and 14 assists for Atlanta’s league-best scoring attack.

Zlatan is also in the last three for Comeback Player of the Year along with Cuban midfielder Osvaldo Alonso of the Seattle Sounders and American forward Gyasi Zardes of the Columbus Crew.

MLS Coach of the Year candidates included Americans Bob Bradley, who guided LAFC to an expansion-team record 57 points and Peter Vermes, who oversaw Sporting Kansas City to the Western Conference title, and Argentina’s Gerardo Martino, who managed Atlanta United’s second-place run in the Eastern Conference.

Goalkeeper of the Year finalists were Swiss Stefan Frei of Seattle and American Luis Robles of New York Red Bulls and Zack Steffen of Columbus.

Defender of the Year finalists were Americans Aaron Long of the New York Red Bulls, Chad Marshall of the Seattle Sounders and Michael Parkhurst of Atlanta United.

Google Files Go App Updated With Built-In Media Player, Secure App Installs, More

Files Go, Google’s storage cleaning, file browsing, and offline sharing app for Android, has just received a major update that brings a number of important features. The latest Files Go version features a built-in media player for both audio and video, including background audio playback. Besides that, the update also includes other features such as advanced browse, secure app installs, and faster sharing. Files Go app is a lightweight app that works with all devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop and higher.

Google has brought an essential built-in media player to Files Go. Users will be able to listen to music and watch videos directly from the app. It is a very simple media player, with play, pause, forward, and backward controls. However, the interesting feature of the media player is that it comes with background audio playback support, meaning you can play music while using other apps, a Google Product Manager said in a post on Reddit.

Coming to the advance browse feature, Google now lets you dig into the folders on your phone. It makes it easier for you directly from the files, instead of a categorised menu. As reported earlier, Files Go is now a part of Google’s offline peer-to-peer file sharing apps, called ‘secure app installs’ in the changelog. It will now check every app that you install to see if it is Google Play-approved, even when offline. In addition to these, the new Files Go version is touted to offer up to 500Mbps of file transfer speeds. It reduces the time needed to share files between two devices, to now less than 5 seconds on average.

The Files Go was launched to help low-end smartphone users to manage space, but with the latest update, it has become a decent backup file manager app. You can download the updated Files Go app by visiting Google Play.

Chelsea Win Premier League When Eden Hazard Is The Best Player, Warns Jose Mourinho

“Very good results, top of the league and, of course, lots of good players but history says that when Eden Hazard is the best player of the Premier League, Chelsea is the champion,” said Mourinho on Friday.

“It happened with me and Antonio, and this season, it is still the beginning of course, but he is the best player of the Premier League until now.

“Chelsea is top of the league because he is the kind of player who can make a huge difference.”

Hazard and Mourinho didn’t end on the best of terms when the Portuguese was sacked from his second spell at Stamford Bridge in December 2015 with Chelsea languishing in 16th and Hazard having failed to score a Premier League goal all season to that point.

However, in a recent interview Hazard spoke of his respect for Mourinho and his desire to play for his former manager again.

Mourinho doesn’t believe that will happen, but insists the two had a good relationship.

“I would love to have him in Manchester United but I don’t think Chelsea will sell him to Man United,” added Mourinho.

“Chelsea is led by intelligent and experienced people in football and they would never sell Eden to Man United so there’s no point to comment.

“I think he is a nice kid. We had a good relation, we were champions together. He was for the first time the best player in the league with me so I think the feelings are good and when the feelings are good you say nice things, when feelings are not good you don’t say so much nice things.”

Few nice things have been said about Mourinho this season, at least by former United players in the media who have led calls for him to be replaced.

Legendary former midfielder Paul Scholes has been most vocal in his criticism of Mourinho and his style of football imposed on the Reds.

A thrilling comeback from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle 3-2 two weeks ago provided an example of how exciting the current United team can be when unshackled. But Mourinho again staunchly defended his approach.

“That story of the attacking football I still don’t understand that story because for me you can only play attacking football when you have the ball,” he added,

“I want the ball and you can only recover the ball if your opponent loses it or if you provoke a mistake in your opponent. For all that you need to defend.

“When you have the ball, you can play a different way and normally adapted to the qualities of your players. That (style) is what I want.”

Novak Djokovic Relishing Semi-Final Against ‘Top Player’ Alexander Zverev

Novak Djokovic said that he was relishing facing “top player” Alexander Zverev in Saturday’s semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, just the second meeting between them. The 14-time Grand Slam champion beat Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 on Friday to set up the tasty last-four clash. Djokovic saved set point in the opener before taking control of the tie break and the second set to dump out the South African seventh seed in efficient fashion. The 31-year-old from Serbia is in sparkling form, winning Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Masters and US Open in recent months, after having elbow surgery in February.

The second seed is homing in on injured Rafael Nadal’s year-end number one ranking.

Djokovic and Zverev met on clay at the Rome Masters in May last year, the 21-year-old German winning the title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Djokovic said they were “both different players” now.

“I wasn’t — I feel like — playing as well as I’m playing today,” he warned.

“But also he has improved a lot and he has established himself as a top player.

“It’s going to be definitely a close match.”

A rising star touted as a potential future multiple Grand Slam winner, fourth seed Zverev eased past Kyle Edmund to reach his first Shanghai semi-final.

The 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 11th-seeded Briton seals Zverev’s place in the season-ending ATP Finals in London next month, which bring together the top eight men.

Shanghai top seed and defending champion Roger Federer plays Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals later on Friday.

The top four players in the world — Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro — had already qualified for London. Zverev is ranked fifth.

Zverev, now under the tutelage of Ivan Lendl, said he is pleased with his overall progress, even if a maiden Grand Slam remains elusive.

“I think every year you feel more mature. Ever year you spend on tour, you feel kind of different,” he said.

“Last year was the first time I kind of broke through to the top 10 and was a top-five player.

“It’s always easier to kind of get there — but then staying there is always the tougher part.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Turns To Juventus Challenge After FIFA Best Player Snub

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri had backed Ronaldo – who has scored three goals in his last two league games – for the award, as he led the way in the Champions League with 15 goals to help Real to a third straight title.

“With no offence to Luka Modric, I’d give the Ballon d’Or to Ronaldo for what he did last season. I think he deserves it,” said Allegri.

The Italian champions face a heavy week in Turin with three games in their Allianz Stadium in the space of seven days.

After Wednesday’s game against 18th-placed Bologna, who shocked Roma 2-0 at the weekend, Juventus play Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli in a top-of-the table clash on Saturday.

Juventus have had a perfect start to the season with five wins and 15 points – three points ahead of Napoli.

Allegri’s side also play Swiss club Young Boys in the Champions League a week on Tuesday, a game which Ronaldo will miss after his controversial sending off against Valencia in Spain.

Napoli host promoted Parma, before their trip to Turin, with an eye on their Champions League game against Liverpool in Naples.

“We won there (Juventus) last season and still finished second,” said Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne.

“If we don’t win the midweek game with Parma, then the result with Juve is irrelevant, so we have to take it one at a time.”

Under-pressure Roma host promoted Frosinone looking for a boost after slipping to 14th with their weekend defeat in Bologna.

Coach Eusebio Di Francesco has reportedly been given a week to save his job, starting against the newcomers from outside Rome, before the city derby against Lazio at the weekend.

Frosinone are second from the bottom of the table with 12 goals conceded, including two to Juventus last weekend.

“At the end of the year when the points are counted the matches like the one in Frosinone you don’t remember immediately, but you know how important they were,” said Allegri.

Roma then host Czech club Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League next week, having lost their opener to holders Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan face a tough task against Fiorentina in the San Siro Tuesday with coach Luciano Spalletti serving a touchline ban for his over-exuberant goal celebration against Sampdoria.

Inter have been struggling but their last-gasp win against the Genoa side followed their come-from-behind 2-1 win in the Champions League against Tottenham.

Spalletti’s side travel to the Netherlands to play PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League next week.

Fiorentina are third in the table five points adrift of Juventus, with Inter in ninth.

Moeen Ali Claims He Was Called “Osama” By Australian Player During Ashes 2015

Moeen Ali has hit out at Australian teams and their “rude” approach to the sport. The England all-rounder recalled a shocking incident during the 2015 Ashes when an unnamed Australian cricketer called him “Osama”. According to the all-rounder, the incident occurred during the first Test in Cardiff. In his autobiography, which is being serialised by The Times, the 31-year-old said that following the racial slur, he was “distracted” for much of the Test and had “never been so angry on a cricket field”.

“It was a great first Ashes Test in terms of my personal performance, however there was one incident which had distracted me,” Moeen Ali said as reported by www.dailymail.co.uk.

“An Australian player had turned to me on the field and said, “Take that, Osama.” I have never been so angry on a cricket field. I told a couple of the guys what the player had said to me and I think Trevor Bayliss must have raised it with Darren Lehmann, the Australians’ coach. Lehmann asked the player, “Did you call Moeen Osama?” He denied it, saying, “No, I said, “Take that, you part-timer”.”

“I must say I was amused when I heard that for there is a world of difference between the words “Osama” and “part-timer”. Although I couldn’t have mistaken “part-timer” for “Osama”, obviously I had to take the player’s word for it, though for the rest of the match I was angry,” added the England all-rounder.

“But our eventual triumph and the Cardiff crowd’s reaction to me comforted me that the Australian player represented nobody.”

The off-spinner and left-handed batsman first came up against the infamously aggressive Australians in 2015 before his struggles with both bat and ball played a key role in England’s 4-0 Ashes defeat ‘Down Under’ in 2017/18, which led to him being dropped.

“Everyone you speak to…they are the only team I’ve played against my whole life that I’ve actually disliked,” said Moeen Ali.

Moeen Ali, who starred in England’s recent 4-1 Test series win over India after being recalled to the side, said he had no sympathy for the banned Australian trio of former captain Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, all sent into international isolation for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March.
