Not Every Brown-Skinned Person Evil, Says Widow Of Techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla Killed In US

New York:

The widow of Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla told the US Navy veteran who killed her husband that he was always “respectful to others” and would have helped him understand that not every brown-skinned person is evil but is contributing to America’s growth.

Adam Purinton, of Olathe, Kansas, was on Tuesday sentenced to three consecutive life sentences on federal hate crime charges for killing Kuchibhotla and wounding two other men – Indian national Alok Madasani and Kansas resident Ian Grillot — at a suburban Kansas City bar last year.

“My husband was more than what you chose to address him as. Always kind, caring, and respectful to others. Srinu and I came to the United States of America full of dreams and aspirations….Now, my American Dream – and that of Srinu’s – is broken,” Sunayana Dumala said in a statement read out in court today as Purinton was sentenced, calling her husband by his informal name.

Addressing Purinton in her victim-impact statement, Ms Dumala said if Purinton could have kept his anger inside and spoken to her husband softly, “Srinu would have been more than happy to share his background and help you understand that not every brown-skinned person is suspicious or evil, but kind, smart and contributing to America.”

She said Purinton instead chose to rage and bully in anger and when he was stopped, he decided to take their lives. “…Use the time that is being given to you to educate yourself and inform others who are still out in the open and stop them from killing innocent people as you did – choosing violence over kindness,” she said in the statement.

Earlier this year, Purinton pleaded guilty in federal court to hate crime and firearm offenses arising out of the shooting.

At his federal guilty-plea hearing, Purinton admitted in open court that he targeted and shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani because of their race, colour, and national origin, and that he shot Grillot during an attempt to flee the scene of the crime.

Purinton has also pleaded guilty in state court to charges of murder and attempted murder.

“The crimes at issue in this case are detestable,” Sessions said. “The defendant acted with clear premeditation in murdering one man, and attempting to murder a second man, simply because of their race, religion, and national origin. As a result, a promising young life has been tragically cut short, and other lives have been filled with suffering.”

Sessions said in the statement that while the “irreparable harm” that Purinton has done cannot be undone, “some measure of justice for the victims’ families has been achieved.”

Every Person Entering Meghalaya Would Be Checked: Police

Meghalaya is all set to carry out “rigorous” checking of people entering the state following the publication of the NRC complete draft in Assam, a senior police officer said.

Superintendent of Police (infiltration), Debangshu Sangma, told PTI that every person entering the state would be checked at the checkpoints.

“At the checkpoints, the people need to show any identification document that proves that he is an Indian citizen and the exercise will continue till further orders,” Mr Sangma said.

The authorities have advised people to carry citizenship proof when they enter the state, failing which they will not be able to go beyond the seven checkpoints bordering Assam.

His statement came in the wake of reports of people from Assam getting detained at the checkpoints, especially after the July 30 publication of the NRC complete draft in neighbouring Assam.

Mr Sangma also denied claims made by the Khasi Students Union that over 1,500 doubtful citizens were detained by their activists at the border crossings.

“It is not a fact. The number of people who were stopped and sent back at the infiltration check gates is less than 100 since August 1,” he said.

Vladimir Putin Would Be The Only Person Rejoicing In No Deal “Brexit” : UK Minister Jeremy Hunt

The only person rejoicing will be Vladimir Putin, Jeremy Hunter said. (File)

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin would be the only winner in the event of Britain crashing out of the European Union next March without a withdrawal agreement, Britain’s foreign minister said Tuesday.

Jeremy Hunt said Russian aggression made it crucial to maintain close diplomatic, defence and trade relations between Britain and the EU after the split.

“Frankly, if we end up with no deal, the only person rejoicing will be Vladimir Putin,” he told France Inter radio on a trip to Paris, charging that Russia wants nothing more than to see the West divided.

“We have to recognise that this is a very unstable period in world history and we need to be working together,” Hunt added.

“There’s Crimea, there’s also the fact that we had chemical weapons used on the streets of England — something that we believe was authorised by the Russian government,” he said of the nerve agent attack on a former double agent which left a woman dead.

Hunt is on his first major international trip since his predecessor Boris Johnson resigned over Brexit earlier this month.

He started the tour in China on Monday and was set to head on from Paris to Vienna as British Prime Minister Theresa May despatches ministers to EU countries in a bid to drum up one-on-one support.

Hunt said a no-deal Brexit was “the last thing we want”, adding that May’s chosen strategy, including pursuing a UK-EU free trade area, was to push for continued close ties.

“We see our destiny, our economic destiny, our diplomatic destiny, our strategic destiny, as being close to Europe,” he said.

Telangana To Appoint “Person In-Charges” In Place Of Village Heads

The number of Gram Panchayats in Telangana has increased to 12,751 (Representational)

The Telangana government would appoint “person in-charges” in place of village heads whose term comes to an end on August 1.

A team of senior officials led by state Chief Secretary SK Joshi, briefing Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, made it clear that there is no alternative except appointing “person in-charges” in place of the village Sarpanchs, a release from the Chief Minister’s Office said in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Though there are demands that outgoing village heads be appointed as “person in-charges”, it cannot be done as per law, the officials told Mr Rao, it said.

The officers briefed Mr Rao about the exercise and the reasons for appointing officers as “person in-charges,” it said.

With 4,383 new Gram Panchayats coming into existence from August 2 (as per a law made by the state assembly), the number of Gram Panchayats in Telangana has increased to 12,751, according to a separate release.

Talking about new Gram Panchayats coming into existence, Mr Rao said the occasion should be taken as an opportunity to develop the villages tremendously.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the state cabinet would be held on July 27.

Amid Row Over Muslim Remark, Rahul Gandhi Says “Stand With Last Person In Line”

Despite the Congress denial, the BJP taunted Rahul Gandhi.

New Delhi:

Rahul Gandhi — who found himself in a huge political row after allegations that he called the Congress a “Muslim party” — today hit back at the BJP with a tweet that spelled out his stand, positioning the party as an all-embracing one. Mr Gandhi’s party has repeatedly denied the reports, which first appeared in a Urdu newspaper and was promptly zeroed in by the BJP. First defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi, used it to target the Congress chief.

Today, the 47-year-old Congress chief, who took charge of the party last December, tweeted:

Over the last week, the BJP and the Congress had been sniping at each other over the reported remarks of Mr Gandhi. While the BJP called the Congress the “worst communal party”, the Congress hit back with a page from history. Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said the BJP is the new version of the East India Company since it has also followed the divide and rule policy.

On Saturday, at a public meeting in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I read in the newspapers that naamdaar (entitled) said the Congress is a party of the Muslims. I am not surprised… When the previous prime minister was in charge, he said openly that the first use of natural resources should be with Muslims”.

Most of the Muslim intellectuals at the meeting with Rahul Gandhi have denied the comments attributed to him by the Urdu daily Inquilaab.

Inquilaab reporter Mumtaz Alam Rizwi said he stood by his report, but Mr Gandhi’s comments were nuanced.  “I never used the term Muslim party. Rahul Gandhi said Congress is a party of Muslims. He said ‘haan, (yes), because Muslims are weakened, they have become another version of Dalits in the country’,” said Mr Rizwi.

On Sunday, the “Inquilab” published another report claiming its version has been corroborated by the Congress minority cell chief, who strongly denied it.

Mukesh Ambani Set To Topple Jack Ma As Asia’s Richest Person: Report

Mukesh Ambani was estimated to be worth $44.3 billion on Friday.

Mukesh Ambani is poised to overtake Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma to become Asia’s richest person as he positions Reliance Industries to disrupt the e-commerce space in India.

The chairman of India’s refining-to-telecoms conglomerate, Mukesh Ambani was estimated to be worth $44.3 billion on Friday with Reliance Industries Ltd. trading 1.7 percent higher, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The stock fetched 1,100.65 rupees as of 12.25 p.m. in Mumbai and is set for a record. Ma’s wealth stood at $44 billion at close of trade on Thursday in the U.S., where the company is listed.

Mr Ambani has added $4 billion to his fortune this year as Reliance doubled its petrochemicals capacity and investors cheered the success of his disruptive telecom upstart Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Then earlier this month, the tycoon unveiled plans to leverage his 215 million telecom subscribers to expand his e-commerce offerings, taking on the likes of Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Ma has lost $1.4 billion in 2018.

“We need to broaden our horizon of expectation with Reliance,” said Nitin Tiwari, a Mumbai-based analyst at Antique Stock Broking. “They are in for something really transformational.”

Mr Ambani, best known for executing large-scale projects, spearheaded construction of the world’s largest refining complex in Jamnagar, owns the most-widespread mobile data network globally and claims to have India’s biggest as well as most-profitable retail firm.

At this month’s annual shareholders’ meeting, he said Reliance saw its “biggest growth opportunity in creating a hybrid, online-to-offline new commerce platform,” involving the group’s Reliance Retail Ltd. and Reliance Jio businesses.

The latter will introduce a fiber-based broadband service across 1,100 Indian cities in August in what Mr Ambani said would be the biggest greenfield fixed-line rollout anywhere in the world.

A spokesman for Reliance didn’t immediately reply to an email seeking comment.

Equity Culture

Within a week of the announcements, Reliance re-entered the $100 billion club after more than a decade. He used the same venue two years ago to announce his disruptive telecom venture with free offers that eventually forced smaller rivals to quit and the biggest ones to merge.

The billionaire inherited Reliance from his much-storied father Dhirubhai Ambani, who is credited with sparking an equity culture among middle-class Indians and using their savings to build the group’s textile and petrochemical manufacturing units.

Dhirubhai’s death in 2002 left the group in the hands of Mukesh and his younger brother Anil Ambani. The brothers eventually split the company in 2005, as per a family pact brokered by their mother, after years of acrimony.

Eating Curd Rice Makes You A Happy Person, Seriously!

The first ingredient in this process of creating a sense of satisfaction is Tryptophan, an essential amino acid present in curd. It is an essential amino acid meaning that it can’t be made by the body and must be taken through our diet.
Tryptophan is the building block of a chemical called Serotonin. Serotonin has a wide variety of functions in the body, from playing a role in learning and memory to digestion. Serotonin is also a neuro-chemical and a natural mood regulator, which makes us feel happy, emotionally stable, less anxious, more tranquil and even more focused and energetic. Low levels of Serotonin are also linked to mood disorders like Depression.

Serotonin can not cross the bloodbrain barrier, so for it to make us happy, it has to be produced in the brain. Here is where the rice comes in. Many foods contain tryptophan, but what makes the brain take up tryptophan to create serotonin is the carbs! That is why just eating foods rich in tryptophan might not create the same satisfaction and happiness.

curd riceTryptohan rich foods without the carbs doesn’t have the same impact that curd rice has.

The best way to reap the benefits of tryptophan is to combine complex carbohydrates with it. Extensive studies at MIT carried out by Richard Wurtman, M.D., showed that tryptophan, the building block of serotonin, could get into the brain only after sweet or starchy carbohydrates were eaten. The carb rich foods create production of insulin in the body that clears the competing amino acids from the blood stream so that brain can take up tryptophan. In absence of insulin the brain prefers the competing amino acids, so eating Tryptohan rich foods without the carbs doesn’t have the same impact that curd rice has. This is one of the reason when we are sad or upset we reach out for carb heavy foods, so that our brain can take up tryptophan and create serotonin.

Mark Zuckerberg Becomes World’s Third Richest Person as Facebook Stock Soars

Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has overtaken Warren Buffett as the world’s third-richest person, further solidifying technology as the most robust creator of wealth.

Zuckerberg, who trails only Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, eclipsed Buffett Friday as Facebook shares climbed 2.4 percent, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

It’s the first time that the three wealthiest people on the ranking made their fortunes from technology. Zuckerberg, 34, is now worth $81.6 billion (approximately Rs. 5.61 lakh crores), about $373 million (roughly Rs. 2,565 crores) more than Buffett, 87, chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Zuckerberg’s ascent has been driven by investors’ continued embrace of Facebook, the social-network giant that shook off the fallout from a data-privacy crisis that hammered its shares, sending them to an eight-month low of $152.22 (about Rs. 10,467.41) on March 27. The stock closed Friday at a record $203.23 (roughly Rs. 13,975.11).

Technology fortunes make up about a fifth of the more than $5 trillion (about Rs. 344 lakh crores) in wealth tracked by the Bloomberg index, more than any other sector. The ranking, which tracks the world’s 500 richest people, is updated after the close of each trading day in New York.

Buffett, once the world’s wealthiest person, is sliding in the ranking thanks to his charitable giving, which he kicked off in earnest in 2006. He’s donated about 290 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to charities, most of it to Gates’s foundation. Those shares are now worth more than $50 billion (about Rs. 3.44 lakh crores), according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Zuckerberg has pledged to give away 99 percent of his Facebook stock in his lifetime.
