CBI Without Director Of Prosecution, Nominations Sought From Ministries

Ministries asked to send the names by January 25. (File)

New Delhi:

The Centre has sought nominations from different ministries to expeditiously fill vacant post of the Director of Prosecution in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is working without its regular chief following the ouster of Alok Verma, officials said today.

O P Verma, who served as the Director of Prosecution, completed his term on December 23, they said. The Director of Prosecution is a crucial post in the federal probe agency.

The incumbent, who works under the supervision and control of the CBI Director, renders legal opinion in all the cases probed by the agency, the officials said.

The Personnel Ministry has written to secretaries of all government departments for names of eligible and willing officers, not below the rank of Joint Secretary and eligible for appointment as Special Public Prosecutor, they said.

They have been asked to send the names by January 25 so that “an expeditious decision can be taken for filling the post of Director of Prosecution in CBI”.

The selection of the Director of Prosecution is made on the recommendation of the Central Vigilance Commission. It is for the first time that the CBI is working without its regular chief and the Director of Prosecution, the officials said.

A parliamentary committee has recently expressed concerns over vacant posts in the CBI and asked the government to take proactive steps to ensure that it does not remain under-staffed.

“Shortage of personnel at various levels in CBI is a perennial problem. The committee has expressed its concern on this on several occasions. Vacancy in any organisation, to a large extent, can be anticipated well in advance and proactive efforts should be initiated to complete necessary procedure to fill up the vacancies on time. The CBI seems to have failed in anticipating such a situation,” the panel had said in its report tabled in Parliament earlier this month.

The CBI is working without a regular chief after the agency’s Director Alok Verma was transferred from the top post in the probe agency. Verma has since resigned.

The parliamentary committee observes that the level of vacant positions in executive ranks, law officers and technical officers is about 16 per cent, 28 per cent and 56 per cent respectively.

A Star Is Born, If Beale Street Could Talk Expected To Lead Nominations

A Star Is Born is expected to top the nominations with nine nods. (Image courtesy: Facebook)

Los Angeles:

Hollywood’s annual carnival of awards shows begins Thursday with the nominations for the Golden Globes – the starting gun in the race for the Oscars. The announcements, which come a week before the influential Screen Actors Guild nominations, are the first major bellwether of momentum going into the Academy Awards, which take place in February. Awards analysis website Gold Derby predicts that music romance reboot A Star Is Born and If Beale Street Could Talk – a tale of black love adapted from a James Baldwin novel – will top the nominations with nine each.

A Star Is Born stars Bradley Cooper, who also directed the film, and Lady Gaga, who are also expected to pick up nominations for their portrayal of an aging rocker and the young ingenue who unite on stage and in life.

A Star Is Born should dominate with nominations at the Globes and Oscars,” Gold Derby managing director Chris Beachum told AFP.

Beale Street – the latest film from Barry Jenkins, who directed the best picture Oscar-winning Moonlight – tells the story of a young black couple in love in 1970s Harlem, and the obstacles in their path.

Beyond the frontrunners, a slew of biopics are in the mix – First Man, the intimate recounting of Neil Armstrong’s moon landing; Dick Cheney film Vice; and Bohemian Rhapsody, about Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, the true story of a black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan with the help of a white partner, is also expected to receive recognition in the drama categories.

Another theme this season is the ravages of addiction, with Beautiful Boy star Timothee Chalamet – an Oscar and Globe nominee for Call Me By Your Name (2017), tipped to earn a nod for playing a meth addict.

A Wealth Of Options

Last year, Tinseltown was looking to turn the page on the Harvey Weinstein scandal that engulfed the world of showbiz.

This year, the focus is squarely on the films.

The Golden Globes feature separate awards for dramas and musicals/comedies – meaning more nominations, and a chance for Oscar voters to consider a wider range of performances before they get their ballots.

The members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who vote on the winners, also have a tendency to honor the unexpected.

A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody will compete in the drama categories, seeking to firmly establish their position before the Oscars.

Roma, the latest from Alfonso Cuaron, is eligible in the foreign film category, but the Mexican filmmaker (Gravity) could get the nod for best director.

In the musical/comedy categories, the frontrunner is – appropriately enough – The Favourite. The offbeat tale of royal deception and lust stars a powerhouse trio of actresses – Olivia Colman as Queen Anne, and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone as the women vying for her attentions.

“Olivia Colman delivers the most shocking screen turn that’s generating the most ‘serious’ buzz in Hollywood,” writes Gold Derby founder Tom O’Neil. “Beware: The queen approaches!”

Another top prospect is Green Book, an offbeat comedy about a black classical pianist in 1960s America who hires an Italian-American bouncer as his driver for a tour of the racially divided South.

Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortenson are both expected to earn nominations.

Summer rom-com success Crazy Rich Asians and anticipated Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns will also compete in these categories. “The HFPA members generally love musicals, so also watch for big numbers for Mary Poppins Returns.” Beachum said.

New Faces In TV Race

The Globes also honor the best in television – it can feel a bit redundant after the Emmys in September, with many of the nominees mimicking the past Emmy field.

They also can look ahead to programs that aired too late for Emmys contention, like the dark HBO mini-series Sharp Objects, Amazon drama Homecoming starring Julia Roberts, and Netflix’s offbeat Maniac with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.

Of course, familiar top dramas like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Americans and This Is Us will also be recognised.

Thursday’s nominations will be presented before dawn in California by actors Leslie Mann (Welcome to Marwen), Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Danai Gurira (Black Panther) and Christian Slater (Mr Robot).

The 76th Golden Globes take place on Sunday, January 6 in Beverly Hills. The Oscar nominations come after the Globes this year, on January 22.

Hosting the gala will be actress Sandra Oh, who could score a nomination herself for acclaimed TV drama Killing Eve, and comedian Andy Samberg, organisers announced Wednesday.

Eight candidates, including Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla have filed nominations in two seats each.

Aizawl:

Nomination papers of all 204 candidates for the election to the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly on November 28 were found to be in order and accepted on Tuesday, state election department officials said.

Eight candidates, including Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) chief ministerial candidate Lalduhoma, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) president Vanlalruata, have filed nominations in two seats each.

The scrutiny of all 212 nomination papers was conducted on Monday and they were accepted, the officials said.

There was, however, some delay in scrutiny in Champhai North seat due to an old nomination form given to a candidate, but the matter was settled on Tuesday, the officials said. Six candidates are contesting from the constituency bordering Myanmar.

National People’s Party (NPP) convener Lianzuala and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state unit chief Lalawmpuia Chhangte also fielded candidates in two seats each, while ‘Zoramthar’ chief Rev Zaichhawna Hlawndo and his two daughters – Lalhrilzeli and Lalruatfeli – also filed nominations in two seats.

Poll Panel Rejects Mizoram BJP Plea To Extend Date Of Filing Nominations

BJP wanted to extend the date for filing nominations citing the law and order situation in Mizoram

New Delhi:

The Election Commission on Thursday rejected a plea of the BJP to extend the last date of filing nominations for the November 28 assembly polls in Mizoram.

The party had moved the plea citing the law and order situation in the northeastern state.

In a letter to state BJP chief JV Hluna, the poll panel said his plea has “not been acceded to on account of peace and normalcy in the state today.”

Friday is the last date of filing nominations.

There have been protests demanding the ouster of Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S B Shashank by the NGO Coordination Committee.

But the protests were called off Wednesday after the officer left for Delhi.

The NGO Coordination Committee, the top body of civil societies and students’ organisations in the north-eastern state, has been demanding that Mr Shashank be replaced and transferred outside the state.

It also demanded that 11,232 Bru voters lodged in six Tripura relief camps be allowed to exercise their franchise at their respective polling stations in Mizoram and not in Tripura as committed by the poll panel in 2014.
