Nominations Of 204 Candidates To Mizoram Assembly Accepted

Eight candidates, including Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla have filed nominations in two seats each.

Nomination papers of all 204 candidates for the election to the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly on November 28 were found to be in order and accepted on Tuesday, state election department officials said.

Eight candidates, including Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) chief ministerial candidate Lalduhoma, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) president Vanlalruata, have filed nominations in two seats each.

The scrutiny of all 212 nomination papers was conducted on Monday and they were accepted, the officials said.

There was, however, some delay in scrutiny in Champhai North seat due to an old nomination form given to a candidate, but the matter was settled on Tuesday, the officials said. Six candidates are contesting from the constituency bordering Myanmar.

National People’s Party (NPP) convener Lianzuala and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state unit chief Lalawmpuia Chhangte also fielded candidates in two seats each, while ‘Zoramthar’ chief Rev Zaichhawna Hlawndo and his two daughters – Lalhrilzeli and Lalruatfeli – also filed nominations in two seats.

Wednesday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

Mizoram is set to go to polls on November 28. The counting of votes will be held on December 11.

The state has 40 assembly seats with an estimated 7.6 lakh registered voters. The Congress has been in power in Mizoram since 2008.

Poll Panel Rejects Mizoram BJP Plea To Extend Date Of Filing Nominations

BJP wanted to extend the date for filing nominations citing the law and order situation in Mizoram

New Delhi:

The Election Commission on Thursday rejected a plea of the BJP to extend the last date of filing nominations for the November 28 assembly polls in Mizoram.

The party had moved the plea citing the law and order situation in the northeastern state.

In a letter to state BJP chief JV Hluna, the poll panel said his plea has “not been acceded to on account of peace and normalcy in the state today.”

Friday is the last date of filing nominations.

There have been protests demanding the ouster of Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S B Shashank by the NGO Coordination Committee.

But the protests were called off Wednesday after the officer left for Delhi.

The NGO Coordination Committee, the top body of civil societies and students’ organisations in the north-eastern state, has been demanding that Mr Shashank be replaced and transferred outside the state.

It also demanded that 11,232 Bru voters lodged in six Tripura relief camps be allowed to exercise their franchise at their respective polling stations in Mizoram and not in Tripura as committed by the poll panel in 2014.

President Ram Nath Kovind Declares Four Nominations To Rajya Sabha

President Ram Nath Kovind declared the nominations after the retirement of four members in April.

New Delhi:

President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday announced four nominations for Rajya Sabha. The nominees include former BJP lawmaker Ram Shakal, RSS  ideologue Rakesh Sinha, sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra and classical dancer Sonal Mansingh.

According to powers of Article 80 (1) (a) of the Constitution of India and on the advice of the Prime Minister, the President of India can make 12 nominations to the Rajya Sabha. The nominations were declared after four Rajya Sabha members – legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, veteran actress Rekha, social activist Anu Agha and veteran lawyer K Parasaran – retired in April.

Here’s a brief bio about the four nominations made by the President:

Ram Shakal:  A people’s leader and public representative from Uttar Pradesh, Ram Shakal has worked extensively for the welfare and well-being of the Dalit community. Game Of Thrones To Queer Eye, 9 Nominations That Matter

Game of Thrones is the one of the most decorated shows in Emmy history (courtesy GoT)

Sorting through the hundreds of Emmy nominations that were announced Thursday can feel like more work than binge-watching the entirety of Gunsmoke. So we’ve distilled this year’s nods down to the nine most surprising, intriguing and important takeaways. Here are the winners from the first round of Emmy madness.

– Netflix

Premium cable services have reigned over the Emmys for some time now. Case in point: HBO has earned the most nominations for 17 years in a row. Until now. Netflix has been slowly inching its way to the top, and this year the streaming service finally surpassed HBO by earning 112 nominations to the latter’s 108. It earned the victory on the strong showing of series like The Crown (13 nods), Godless (12), Stranger Things (12) and Glow (10) – an impressive feat, given the dominance of “Game of Thrones.”

– Game of Thrones

Ahh, yes, welcome back, old friend. HBO’s breakout fantasy series is back with all the vengeance of an angry Arya Stark. Game of Thrones is the one of the most decorated shows in Emmy history, a trend that’s poised to continue. It earned the most nominations Thursday with 22, narrowly edging out the big-budget sci-fi show that the cable provider hopes will be its replacement, Westworld, which came away with 21 nods. The year’s other tentpole drama, The Handmaid’s Tale, also trailed closely behind with 20 chances to win a trophy.

– Kenan Thompson

For Mother’s Day, Thompson’s mom Ann appeared on Saturday Night Live and said, “Kenan, I can’t imagine this show without you. Like, I actually can’t remember when you weren’t on it.” She was referring to his 15 years on the show, which makes him the longest-tenured cast member in its history. Many consider him to be one of the show’s most important cast members, but this is the first time he’s received an Emmy nomination, giving life to the phrase “better late than never.”

– Anthony Bourdain

After the celebrity chef turned writer turned television personality took his life in June, CNN chose to release the final two episodes of his beloved travelogue show Parts Unknown, in which he visited Cajun Mardi Gras in Southern Louisiana and Bhutan. The episodes were met with a mixture of praise and sorrow. The Television Academy seemed similarly struck by Bourdain’s final season, nominating it for six Emmys, including one for best informational series or special.

– John Legend

The stakes will be pretty high for the R&B star, who has two chances to EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony): 1) If he wins lead actor in limited series or TV movie for NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert,” or 2) If the show wins outstanding variety special, since he was a co-executive producer. (Added bonus: If Jesus Christ Superstar wins, executive producers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice could also EGOT.) He has some tough competition with Jeff Daniels from Hulu’s The Looming Tower and Benedict Cumberbatch in Showtime’s Patrick Melrose – but given that the NBC production was live, voters might want to acknowledge the trickiness of that performance.

– New comedy nominees

Since 2010, the only winners in the best comedy series category have been Modern Family (2010 through 2014) and Veep (2015 through 2017). This year, Modern Family received no nominations for the first time ever, while Veep went on hiatus while Julia Louis-Dreyfus was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. (It will resume production next month.) So who will take the comedy crown? Newcomers such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry and GLOW are all poised to make an impact.

– Sandra Oh

This spring, BBC America’s Killing Eve became the rare TV series to gain viewers every week as the buzz spread about this addicting drama about a cat-and-mouse game between a British intelligence officer (Sandra Oh) and terrifying assassin (Jodie Comer). Both performances got raves, but Oh was a standout and on Thursday became the first Asian woman to be Emmy-nominated for lead actress in a drama. Oh was nominated for supporting actress four times for her breakout role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but it’s clear she’s overdue for a win.

– The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

This Amazon comedy debuted in December and quickly scooped up multiple Golden Globe nominations, with a win for best comedy series and best actress for Rachel Brosnahan, in her breakout role as a housewife turned stand-up comedian in the 1950s. Although the Globes and Emmys aren’t always on the same page, Emmy voters also loved the show, which was showered with 14 nominations, including best comedy. In addition to Brosnahan’s lead actress nod, Tony Shalhoub, Alex Borstein and Jane Lynch were also nominated for their respective roles.

– Queer Eye

The Netflix reboot of Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy became an immediate hit when it was released this year. Of course, we’ll never know the ratings, but it was one of those cultural sensations that lit up the internet with all the memes and catchphrases. So it’s no surprise that the show received an Emmy nod for outstanding structured reality program – although a bit more mysterious that its five stars were left off the list for best reality show host.

Emmy Nominations 2018: Game of Thrones, Netflix Lead the Way

The 2018 Emmy nominations were announced on Thursday, and the leaders aren’t that surprising: Game of Thrones tops with 22 nominations, followed by Westworld and Saturday Night Live with 21 apiece.

Among networks, Netflix has the most Emmy nominations with 112, followed by HBO with 108. In the Primetime section, which is usually considered the main event, the two are neck and neck with 36 and 35, respectively.

Game of Thrones sits alongside The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things, and Westworld in the Best Drama lineup, while Silicon Valley was one of eight comedies nominated for Best Comedy. Black Mirror’s Star Trek-inspired episode, “USS Callister“, is one of five nominated in Best TV Movie category.

In addition, Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, and Lena Headey have been nominated in the supporting performer categories, and there are two directing nods for Alan Taylor and Jeremy Podeswa, for their work on the sixth and seventh episodes of the season.

If you’re confused why Game of Thrones is nominated when it hasn’t aired an episode in nearly a year, that’s because the Emmy eligibility period runs from June-May; in the case of the 2018 Emmys, that was June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018.

Westworld’s Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright secured nominations in Best Lead Actor, while Evan Rachel Wood is present in Best Lead Actress alongside last year’s winner Elisabeth Moss, for The Handmaid’s Tale season 2.

Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, and Yvonne Strahovski are present in the supporting actor/actress categories for The Handmaid’s Tale; alongside David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown for Stranger Things season 2; and Westworld’s Thandie Newton.

Black Mirror also got two acting nominations: Jesse Plemons for Best Lead Actor, while Letitia Wright is nominated in Best Supporting Actress, both in the limited series and TV movie department.

The 2018 Emmys will be held on September 17 in Los Angeles. You can watch it live on Star World in India, starting 5:30am IST on September 18.
