After MeToo Movement, Thousands Protest In Feminist Tidal Wave Against Gender Violence

Tens of thousands of people rallied across Europe on Saturday against sexist violence, with more than 30,000 turning out in Paris.

Demonstrations across France drew around 50,000 people in all, according to organiser Caroline de Haas, to answer a citizen collective’s call for a “feminist tidal wave” of outrage against gender violence brought into sharp focus by the #MeToo movement.

Elsewhere, a thousand people braved driving rain in Rome while similar protests drew several hundred demonstrators in Geneva and Athens on the eve of the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Sunday.

“The fight against violence against women is progressing daily but our society has a long way to go — everyone must act and fight as this is everybody’s business,” President Emmanuel Macron tweeted in offering his moral support.

Authorities put the Paris turnout at 12,000 and similar marches in Lyon, Marseille and Rennes at between 1,000 and 2,400, but De Haas felt moved to salute “the largest (feminist) mobilisation France has known”, far bigger than a rally that drew some 2,000 last year.

Participants clad in purple, the colour of the #NousToutes women’s activist protest movement, shouted slogans including “sick of rape”, “end impunity for aggressors” and “a woman is never responsible for the violence she suffers”, while also demanding sufficient government resources to tackle the issue.

“I am here to support all the victims and continue this struggle which started long before I came along,” said French actress Muriel Robin, who had organised a similar rally last month in the capital.

Rise in violence cases

The rallies drew a number of men, including Tanguy, a 19-year-old student who turned out in the western city of Rennes to declare backing for “a movement which is not based on sex — it’s not a fight pitting men against women but a fight by men and women, together, against inequality.”

The #NousToutes movement started out in France in September, inspired by the #MeToo campaign that began last year since when the number of cases of sexual violence reported to police in France has risen 23 percent.

Latest French government figures say 2017 saw 225,000 cases of domestic violence against women by their partners while 2016 saw 123 deaths.

Further marches are planned for Sunday in a number of cities across Europe to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Macron last year made sexual equality a priority of his presidency.

But “if the money is not forthcoming public policy won’t follow on”, warned De Haas, speaking two days after several civil organisations called for a huge increase in public resources dedicated to the problem.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Saturday that an online platform for reporting sexual violence and sexism will be launched on Tuesday.

“This is the first milestone, technical and political, to eradicate” violence, said he said in a Facebook post.

“From now, a few clicks can help everyone make a new start: for themselves, for their family. And perhaps avoid the worst.”

Search Operation Launched In Punjab’s Pathankot and Gurdaspur After Movement Of Four Suspicious Men

Search operation being carried in and around Saidipur village in Pathankot. (Representative)

A search operation was launched by the Punjab Police and other security agencies the frontier districts of Pathankot and Gurdaspur after movement of four suspicious men was reported and an abandoned car was found, authorities said today.

Police officials said the search operation was being carried in and around Saidipur village in Pathankot district.

A white Maruti-Suzuki Alto car with Jammu and Kashmir registration number was found near the Bamiyal area. The police said the suspected men abandoned the vehicle and fled after police personnel asked them to stop for checking at a police barrier.

On November 14, another massive search operation was carried out in the frontier areas in Punjab after four suspected terrorists hijacked a taxi at gunpoint.

The Punjab Police was placed on alert last week after its counter-intelligence wing suggested that six to seven Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists “could be moving towards Delhi” from the state.

Market Outlook Sensex Nifty Next Week Top 5 Factors To Guide Shares/Stock Movement

The domestic institutional investors sold Rs 813.42-crore stocks in the past week.

Macro-economic indicators such as inflation, factory output as well as global crude oil prices will dictate the stock market trend next week, analysts said. A string of assembly elections, starting November 12, will also drive investor sentiments after range-bound movement the previous week.

The government will release Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data for October next week.

Retail inflation for September was at 3.77 per cent, up from 3.69 in August. The wholesale inflation rose to 5.13 per cent in September, from 4.53 per cent in August.

Assembly elections kickstart with the first phase of elections in Chhattisgarh on Monday, November 12. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram go to polls this month and the next to reconstitute their respective assemblies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rules Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and a return to power in these states will bolster Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chances of winning next year’s general election.

Also, crude oil prices, which have eased recently, would guide the equity market next week, analysts said.

In the week ended November 9, crude prices fell significantly from their recent highs. Brent crude oil is currently hovering around $70 per barrel, compared to $86 in early October.

India imports about 80 per cent of its crude oil requirements, and a spike in global rates triggers inflation concerns in Asia’s third-largest economy.

Strength of the rupee against the dollar would also be a key factor. On Friday, November 9, the domestic currency closed at 72.49 per dollar after logging a single-day gain of 51 paise. It had closed at 72.44 the previous week.

In a holiday-truncated week, the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex gained 146.9 points, or 0.41 per cent, to close at 35,158.55 on Friday.

Similarly, the Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) advanced 32 points, or 0.30 per cent, to settle at 10,585.20.

The markets were shut on Thursday on the occasion of “Laxmi Pujan”. On Diwali the previous day, the BSE and the NSE conducted a special “Muhurat” trading between 5.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.

The provisional figures from the stock exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors bought scrips worth Rs 157.79 crore in the week ended November 9.

The domestic institutional investors sold Rs 813.42-crore stocks in the past week.

The Nifty is expected to face resistance at 10,755, while support is seen at 10,444, said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Reseach at HDFC Securities.

Ahead Of Voting, Eye In The Sky Notes Maoist Movement In Chhattisgarh

Drones are being used to recce the area before security forces move in to sanitise the area.

The use of unmanned drones for the first time in Chhattisgarh ahead of elections has revealed the movement of Maoists in the area. Elections are due in Maoist-hit areas of Chhattisgarh tomorrow and the drones are being used to recce the area before security forces move in to sanitise the area for election officials.

Polling for 18 of Chhattisgarh’s 90 seats – all located in Maoist-hit areas, will be held tomorrow. The rest will vote on November 20.

Intelligence reports say Maoists from Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha and other states on the Maoist corridor are in Chhattisgarh ahead of first phase of elections. For more than a decade, Maoists have put a ban on voting by villagers and implement it by force.

This morning, Maoists triggered seven explosions and took on security forces in Kanker district, 175 km from state capital Raipur in which one of the insurgents died. A securityman was injured.

Photos sent from an unmanned drone show a group of Maoists moving in Kaushalnar — deep inside the forests of Abujmaad. The area has practically been claimed by Maoists and there is practically no security presence across the 6000-7000 square km area.

But security officials say the use of unmanned drones as part of the crackdown on Maoists may not be possible yet due to ground realities.

The time lag between receiving the pictures and the troops reaching the area where the Maoists are spotted, will be long — given the terrain and the necessary caution that tends to slow down operations. Throughout the area, the Maoists have laid booby traps, complete with spikes and Improvised Explosive Devices and free and fast movement in the area is impossible, say security officials.

There is also the question of Maoist cadres and informers, who mingle among villagers and keep tabs on the movement of security forces.

Aamir Khan Talks About #MeToo Movement, Amitabh Bachchan And Ex-wife Reena Dutta

New Delhi:

In tonight’s episode of Koffee With Karan host Karan Johar welcomed Aamir Khan as his guest, whose film Thugs Of Hindostan is all set to hit the screens this Thursday. Besides talking about his upcoming film in tonight’s episode, Aamir spoke about his adulation for Amitabh Bachchan, his relationship with ex-wife Reena Dutta and the much talked about #MeToo Movement. This is the third time Aamir Khan appeared on Karan’s talk show. He had earlier shared the Koffee couch with wife Kiran Rao and his Dangal c-stars Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh. In case you missed all the candid confessions by “Mr Perfectionist” tonight, we have got you covered.

Karan Johar has a confession!

Before welcoming his guest Aamir Khan on the couch, Karan Johar confessed that he has this “terrible behavioural pattern” called “fomo” or the fear of missing out. Therefore, for a day, he wants to wake up as his best friend Aditya Chopra, who is media recluse (as we all know).

Why Aamir Khan is “nervous” about Thugs Of Hindostan?

Aamir Khan’s Thugs Of Hindostan is all set to hit the screens on November 8 but the actor revealed that he is very “nervous” about his film this time. Aamir said that most of his recent movies imparted some social messages but Thugs is entirely a “mainstream” film. Aamir, who plays Firangi Mullah in Thugs Of Hindostan said: “He is the kind of guy you love watching but you don’t want him to be around since he cannot be trusted.”

Aamir Khan on equation with ex-wife Reena Dutta

Aamir Khan opened about his relationship with his first wife Reena Dutta whom he divorced in 2002. Aamir revealed that the divorce was “traumatic” for both Reena and his family but he is “glad” that he spent 16 years of his life with her. Aamir’s wife Kiran, whom he married in 2005, shares a good equation with Reena. Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were married from 1986 to 2002 and they are parents to Ira and Junaid. Speaking about his children’s career choices, Aamir said: “Junaid wants be in films. He has a knack for acting as well as directing. I am not sure what Ira has on her mind but she loves the world of cinema”.

Aamir Khan and Karan Johar on #MeToo

Amidst all the discussion about Aamir’s family and films, Karan Johar chose to throw up a question at Aamir about the much talked about #MeToo Movement, which gained momentum in India recently. “#MeToo is the right thing to have happened,” said Karan. “Women have been facing such kind of exploitation from decades and in all walks of life. It’s awful and I am glad that the much needed clean-up happened,” said Aamir. The actor revealed how he was shocked to come across #MeToo accounts of women naming and shaming people whom he knew professionally. Karan also talks about the stand his wife and Aamir took against people who are blamed of exploitation.

I am a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan: Aamir Khan

Aamir revealed that he always wanted to work with Amitabh Bachchan and how much he idealized him. He shared an incident from when he was shooting for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander in Ooty. He said that when he got back to his hotel after shooting for the film, the receptionist told him that Amitabh Bachchan had called asking for him. Initially Aamir thought someone was pranking him but his heart skipped a beat when the actor was actually on the other side of the receiver. Working with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in Thugs Of Hindostan, I was intimidated and awed.”

Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh In Karan Johar’s Epic Photo

So, when the “epic” photo featuring Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Karan Johar hit the Internet, fans were left pleasantly surprised. Karan revealed that initially Aamir was doing “much drama” to come over for the get-together and once he joined the party, he was in no mood to leave soon. “We had great fun that night,” said Aamir.

Stay tuned for more updates of Koffee With Karan 6.

Actively Participated In Ram Janmabhoomi Movement, Ram Temple Is My Dream

“Whatever initiative is required from my end I am ready for it,” says Uma Bharti on Ram Temple

Uma Bharti, Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation has advocated the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, and said she is ready to provide any assistance required.

Calling the construction of the temple as her “dream”, Uma Bharti told ANI, “I have actively participated in Ram Janambhoomi Andolan. Hearing of a case is also underway in connection with it, on me and LK Advani Ji, and I am proud of it. The construction of Ram Temple is my dream and whatever initiative is required from my end I am ready for it.”

Amidst demands for an ordinance to permit the construction of the temple before the Supreme Court pronounces its judgement in the Ayodhya title suit, Union Minister PP Chaudhary said that a law can be made in case of judicial delay.

“Ram Mandir should be constructed, the case is in the Supreme Court and we want it to be decided quickly. I can’t say about the government, but my personal opinion is that if there is a judicial delay then a law can be made,” said Mr Choudhary.

On October 29, the top court had adjourned the hearing of the case until January 2019. The court was hearing petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict of 2010, which stated that the disputed land in Ayodhya should be divided into three parts for each party – the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

While the matter is pending before the top court, a number of spiritual leaders have called for the immediate resolution of the matter, and have even claimed that construction of the temple will begin in December this year.

On Saturday, Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sadhvi Prachi had said that December 6 must be fixed for the construction of Ram Temple and Hindus from all over the country must be called to Ayodhya for it.

Sadhvi’s remarks came a day after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi said that a movement similar to the one initiated in 1992 will be carried out, if necessary.

The Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was demolished on December 6, 1992, allegedly by a group of Hindu activists, claiming that the mosque was constructed by Mughal king Babur after demolishing a Ram Temple that originally stood there. Since then, several hearings have been held in the top court to resolve the issue.

Writer Honey Irani Says, ‘Don’t Mock’ The #MeToo Movement

A file photo of Honey Irani at the Gold screening.

Veteran writer Honey Irani, maternal aunt of director Sajid Khan who has been accused of sexual harassment, says it’s important not to “mock” the #MeToo movement.

“It’s sad that now that women are talking, most people don’t listen, and ask why did you not speak up then? Well this is exactly why, when you can’t deal with it now, imagine how could you 10 or 15 years back. If you can’t support this movement, fine, but please don’t mock it, the Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai writer tweeted.

Sajid has been named by multiple women for sexual misconduct. The actor-director stepped down as Housefull 4 director, saying he was doing so “Till the time I can allay the allegations and prove the truth”.

When the accusations against Sajid emerged, his sister Farah Khan and cousin Farhan Akhtar expressed disappointment, saying if these are true, he has a lot to atone for.

The #MeToo wave has been on high tide in India ever since Tanushree Dutta renewed a 10-year-old allegation against Nana Patekar, leading several women from across professions to name and shame sexual offenders and predators. In some cases, matters have gone to court.

#MeToo Movement Being Blown Out Of Proportion, Says Shatrughan Sinha

Shatrughan Sinha says the #Metoo cause was definitely noble and become a free-for-all. (File)

Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha says while the MeToo movement is noble, it is becoming “free-for-all” and being blown out of proportion.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. Your dear friend Subhash Ghai stands accused of multiple sexual offences. Your comments?

A. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I am all for the MeToo movement, never in my 40-year career have I misbehaved with any woman. I treat every lady with utmost respect. Having said that, I think this MeToo campaign is being blown out of all proportion.

Q. In what way?

A. While the cause was definitely noble and praiseworthy, it has now become a free-for-all. Anyone can name and shame anyone. Reputations and jobs are being lost through a trial by media. To all the women who are aggrieved I say, please go to court and make sure the wrongdoers are punished.

Q. You’ve done some terrific films with Subhash Ghai. Would you work with him in future?

A. Why not? If he is proven innocent, why not? Even if he is proven guilty, and he serves the punishment given to him, I’d work with him. Sanjay Dutt served his jail sentence and is back working in our large-hearted film industry. In fact, we had no problem working with him even when he was an accused in a serious case.

Q. Many of the top stars and directors have vowed not to work with sexual offenders?

A. This hypocrisy I can’t understand. They have no problem working with Sanjay Dutt who has been convicted. But they want to blacklist people whose guilt is yet to be proven. Just to look like heroes of the MeToo movement.

Q. A-list actors have dissociated themselves from tainted directors?

A. I don’t want to name anyone. But I will say this. Sau choohe khaa kar billi haj ko chali’. Those seeking to perch themselves on a high moral ground, should look into their conscience. The problem of sexual exploitation, doesn’t end with some names being put out in the social media. This is just the beginning. The problem runs much deeper.

Q. Your tainted party colleague MJ Akbar refuses to step down. What is your take on his brazen attitude?

A. I don’t even know which political party I belong to anymore! Having said that, MJ Akbar is a friend. And a wise one. I know him from the time he revolutionised journalism in this country. He knows what he is doing, and why. I believe he has employed 97 lawyers to defend him against charges (of sexual harassment). He should have employed three more lawyers… It would have been a century… Seriously, how can he afford such a massive legal fleet? I can’t afford it if I ever need it.
