Chicago Restaurant Manager Swings Chair At Black Teen, Suspended

Restaurant manager Matthew Fezzey was suspended after the incident.

John “Kyle” Johnson wasn’t initially planning on entering the Poke Poke restaurant in downtown Chicago, but he walked inside when he saw someone wave to him through the window.

When the black 18-year-old entered the Wabash Avenue restaurant on Jan. 2 with two of his friends, however, he was met with a much less welcoming surprise.

“I’ll kick your a–,” the restaurant’s manager, Matthew Fezzey, yelled toward him, according to Johnson. “This is my place of business.”

Moments later, Fezzey swung a chair at him, Johnson said, hitting his arm with such force that the teen suffered injuries. Johnson then called the police and began filming the encounter.

“I was supershocked, I was scared, thinking: ‘Is this is really happening right now?’ ” Johnson told The Washington Post on Tuesday. “I looked into his eyes, and they were superfurious.”

In the video, Fezzey never denies the allegations that he hit Johnson with a chair. Instead, he repeatedly acknowledges that he was “in the wrong,” and he says the reaction was his “first instinct” after previous encounters with black men at the restaurant.

“Two days ago – and I’m not trying to be racist – two black guys robbed two people right here,” Fezzey explains to Johnson in the video, using numerous expletives in his response.

“But sir, you threw a chair at me,” Johnson responds earnestly. “I’m not those guys.”

“Listen, three days ago, before that, I had two more black guys. I actually fought them in here,” Fezzey replied. “They tried threatening one of my employees, and I had to fight them . . . when you guys came in here, I just got really . . . defensive, really defensive, because I had to fight them off all the time. These security guards over here don’t do a . . . thing.”

The video was posted to Facebook last week and has amassed more than 20,000 views.

Fezzey did not respond to an email requesting comment Monday. Poke Poke Chicago did not respond to an email and numerous phone calls requesting comment on the matter.

In a statement posted to social media on Friday, however, the restaurant apologized and said that as a minority-owned establishment, it doesn’t “tolerate discrimination or racism of any kind.”

“How our manager reacted to the situation was absolutely unacceptable and against what we stand for,” the restaurant wrote. It continued, “Racism has no place in today’s society, and no one should ever be judged by the color of their skin. There are no excuses for what happened to Kyle and for that we apologize.”

Fezzey had been suspended, pending a police investigation, the statement read.

No charges have been filed in the case. Johnson’s attorney, Anish Parikh, told The Post that his client plans to take legal action and that the restaurant’s statement supports the teen’s assertion that he was an innocent victim.

Parikh added that Fezzey should have been terminated, and that his suspension “speaks volumes about their business and the people who run it.”

“This type of behavior, in our opinion, warrants a termination,” he said.

Johnson, a senior at Innovations High School in Chicago, aspires to be a social worker. He said “meditation and prayer” were among the reasons he was able to stay calm throughout the ordeal. The teen received X-rays after the attack, and he said the altercation has taken a psychological toll.

He hopes shedding light on the situation will help facilitate change.

“In any situation where someone would throw a chair at you, it makes you feel like you can’t do anything,” Johnson said, adding that Fezzey was larger than him. “My state of mind was literally, ‘God help me,’ and I just remained calm.”

The teen said he felt “voiceless” when Fezzey threatened to call the police.

“He was screaming at me, saying he was gonna call the cops. . . . I was thinking, ‘Why would you call the cops on me when I didn’t do anything wrong?’ ” Johnson said. “When the police get here, am I going to be held accountable for something I didn’t do?”

Premier League: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Named Manchester United Caretaker Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was on Wednesday named as Manchester United’s caretaker manager until the end of the current season following the sacking of Jose Mourinho. The former United striker will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club looks for a new full-time manager. Mourinho was axed on Tuesday after just two-and-half years in charge at Old Trafford, with the 20-times English champions languishing in sixth place in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Solskjaer, 45, will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said the Norwegian.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: “Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles.

“His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”

United appeared to accidentally announce the appointment on their website on Tuesday, with a video appearing on the club’s official website celebrating Solskjaer.

A video of him scoring the winner for United in their 1999 Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich was accompanied with the headline ‘The most famous night of Ole’s career’.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also appeared to confirm Solskjaer’s appointment, writing on Twitter: “Great day for Norwegian football. Good luck keeping control of the Red Devils.”

Solskjaer joined United as a player from Molde in 1996 and was part of the team that won the treble of the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 1998/99.

The Norwegian’s first game in charge of Manchester United will be Saturday’s trip to former club Cardiff.

He managed the Bluebirds between January 2014 and September 2014, failing to stop them being relegated from the Premier League, returning to Molde in 2015.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane are among the bookmakers’ favourites to take the United job at the end of the season.

Manchester United Announce Immediate Departure Of Manager Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has left Manchester United with immediate effect, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday. “Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement. “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager,” the statement added.

Mourinho’s relationship with important members of the Manchester United squad had soured recently, with his strained relations with Paul Pogba coming out in the open after an unfortunate spat at Carrington. Mourinho also didn’t share a great rapport with Antonio Valencia, after the Manchester United captain had liked a post on social media that discussed Mourinho’s sacking.

Mourinho has previously managed clubs such as FC Porto, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Chelsea. The Portuguese manager had played an instrumental role in helping Chelsea become a force to reckon with in European football.

Mourinho was given charge of the club after Louis Van Gaal was sacked in 2016. Soon after, he signed Paul Pogba from Juventus for a whopping $ 85 million, which took the transfer market by storm. Although Mourinho wanted to last with the club for at least 15 years, lasted barely over 24 months.

Manchester United got off to a disastrous start this season, currently languishing at the sixth spot with 26 points, eight behind Unai Emery’s Arsenal. Soon after United lost their Premier League fixture against Liverpool on December 16, where they lost 1-3 after a Xherdan Shaqiri brace. Liverpool are currently top of the table.

Mithali Raj’s Manager Loses Her Cool

India dropped star batter Mithali Raj for their Women’s World Twenty20 semi-final against England in Antigua on Thursday as captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bat first. In a shock decision, Harmanpreet did not bring back all-time record T20 run-scorer Mithali, instead choosing to retain the same team which defeated Australia in the final group game in Guyana five days earlier. The decision to bench an in-form Mithali in the crucial encounter, which the Women in Blue lost by 8 wickets, refused to take backseat, with former captain’s manager lashing out at current skipper.

Annisha Gupta called Harmanpreet a “manipulative, lying, immature, undeserving captain” and further went on to say that the women’s team believed in “politics not sport”.

“Unfortunately @BCCIWomen believes in politics not sport. After witnessing what @M_Raj03 ‘s experience could do in IndvIre it’s shocking that they went with what pleases @ImHarmanpreet -a manipulative, lying, immature, undeserving captain,” Annisha’s tweet read.

Annisha’s reaction came after Harmanpreet had said in the post-match presentation on Friday that she had “no regrets” in leaving out Mithali from the playing XI at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at North Sound in Antigua.

Annisha, however, later deleted the unverified Twitter handle, but took ownership of the tweets and defended her criticism by saying it came “from the right place”.

“I’d like to say that I don’t know what is going on on the inside but, now that the matches are being telecast, we can see who is performing and who is not,” Annisha told ESPNcricinfo.

“And we can see the kind of treatment that Mithali has received despite her brilliant performance and despite showing stability and consistency. The kind of treatment she has received is completely uncalled for and there is something deeper than we need to look at than just the statements that have been coming out.

“There are statements coming out that they wanted to give younger cricketers a chance but you don’t drop your senior-most, most experienced players in a semi-final against a country like England. It goes beyond giving the youngsters a chance,” she added.

Reiterating her statement, Annisha said she could not stand the unfair treatment meted out to India’s highest scorer in the shortest format with 2,283 T20I runs.

“Maybe I was a little angry but I think it comes from the right place because I don’t stand for unfair treatment. The kind of favouritism that has been shown is very apparent. I think everybody can see the kind of favouritism that is being shown to certain members of the team,” Annisha said.

On a pitch that demanded the technical acumen of Mithali, and where stroke play wasn’t the easiest way to approach, the Indian team management’s ploy of excluding the former skipper cost it dear, which was evident from the fact that the last seven Indian wickets fell for mere 23 runs before folding for a meagre 112.

Eventually, India not only lost the affair but also had to return home empty handed.

MS Dhoni Dreaming Of Playing 2019 ICC World Cup, Says Manager Arun Pandey

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Indian cricket’s most decorated captain, has been playing the role of a mentor to skipper Virat Kohli since giving up the captaincy. However, in 2018, the 37-year-old has been struggling to get going with the bat. His last 50 came almost a year ago against Sri Lanka and since then it has been a lull. His continuous poor form had also resulted in him being axed from both the Twenty20 International series against the Windies at home and in Australia. Moreover, there have been speculations about Dhoni participation in the 2019 ICC World Cup. However, Dhoni’s close friend and manager Arun Pandey has revealed that the Ranchi player is in no mood to back off from a shot at the quadrennial event.

“It’s been a long cherished dream of Dhoni – since he gave up the captaincy in white ball cricket – to play in the World Cup next year where he would be more as a mentor to the team. His idea was to give Kohli time to develop in this role and there is still no change in his thinking,” Pandey told Gulf News.

Dhoni gave up Test captaincy during India’s tour of Australia in 2014 and two years later, he gave Kohli the captain’s mantle in all formats of the game.

Dhoni’s role as an ODI batsman has increasingly become debatable. In the recent past he has got the backing of the captain, coach and the chief selector.

His glove work has got better with time. But Dhoni the batsman has been missing.

It’s almost certain that the 2019 World Cup will be the last hurrah for the best finisher of Indian cricket, but Dhoni would not want that to be primarily on reputation rather than overall form.

Fulham Appoint Claudio Ranieri As Manager After Sacking Slavisa Jokanovic

Ranieri, who famously led Leicester to a fairytale Premier League title in 2016, was a free agent after being sacked by French Ligue 1 club Nantes one game before the end of last season.

His appointment comes only weeks after his former boss at Leicester, club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, died with four others when his helicopter plummeted into a car park outside the King Power stadium shortly after his side’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.

“I was terribly shaken by the news,” Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia two weeks ago in what was his first public reaction since the tragedy.

“He was a good man and always had a positive word for everyone.”

Italian journeyman Ranieri has previously coached Napoli, Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Valencia, Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan, and the Greece national team.

But winning the title with Leicester two years ago remains the affable 67-year-old’s biggest career achievement.

Although Leicester started that 2015-2016 league campaign on odds of 5000-1 to win the Premier League crown, Ranieri faces a similar challenge if he is to lift Fulham out of the doldrums.

He will take charge of his first game in 10 days’ time when Fulham welcome fellow strugglers Southampton to Craven Cottage.
