Former Donald Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort Pleads Guilty In Robert Mueller Probe

Paul Manafort pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States (Reuters)

WASHINGTON:

U.S. President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort will plead guilty to two criminal counts as part of a deal with prosecutors on Friday, court documents showed in what could be a blow to Trump in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s long-running probe of Russian election meddling.

As part of the deal, Manafort, 69, could be required to cooperate with Mueller’s probe into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Details of the deal were likely to emerge in a plea agreement hearing scheduled for 11 a.m. ET (1500 GMT) in federal court. Manafort would become the most prominent former Trump campaign official to plead guilty in Mueller’s investigation, which has cast a shadow over Trump’s presidency.

It remains unclear if the deal will include Manafort’s cooperation with Mueller’s probe, dealing a blow to Trump ahead of congressional elections on Nov. 6.

Another approach would be for Manafort to plead guilty without cooperating in hopes of a presidential pardon. Trump has not said whether he would pardon Manafort, but the president has not publicly ruled it out.

Manafort will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, according to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Five other charges were dropped in the new court filing.

A Virginia jury convicted Manafort last month on bank and tax fraud charges.

Jury selection was due to begin on Monday in a second trial on charges including conspiring to launder money, conspiring to defraud the United States, failing to register as a foreign agent and witness tampering.

Manafort’s decision could be a blow to Trump, who last month praised his former aide for not entering into an agreement with prosecutors, as the president’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen had.

On Twitter on Aug. 22, Trump wrote: “Unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to ‘break’ – make up stories in order to get a ‘deal. Such respect for a brave man!”

According to the court filing, the charge of conspiracy against the United States includes money laundering, tax fraud, failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, and acting as an unregistered lobbyist for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine. The second count, for conspiracy to obstruct justice, concerns attempts to tamper with witnesses related to Manafort’s foreign lobbying.

Manafort’s conviction in Alexandria, Virginia, last month was at a trial arising from Mueller’s investigation. Trump has denied colluding with the Russians and the Russians have denied interfering.

Rick Gates, Manafort’s former business partner and the campaign’s deputy chairman, pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for his cooperation, later testifying against Manafort in Virginia. Gates may have been a prosecution witness in his Washington trial as well.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is now representing Trump in the Russia probe, told Reuters on Friday that a guilty plea to avoid a second trial would not crush Manafort’s chances of receiving an eventual presidential pardon.

“It’s not going to hurt him if he pleads guilty. Usually it helps you get a pardon down the road. It shows you’ve admitted your guilt,” he said on Friday before a deal was announced. He declined further comment until after the hearing.

New Delhi:

Shailendra Pasari, Senior Manager (Civil), Northern Coalfields Ltd., posted at Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, was arrested by the CBI while he was allegedly taking bribe of Rs 10,000 for clearing pending bills worth Rs 1.27 lakh of a contractor, they said.

Will Review Performance After Team Manager Submits Report, Says Vinod Rai

Commenting on the recent performance of the Indian cricket team in the ongoing Test series against England, Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai on Sunday said that once the team manager submits his report, a view would be taken on it. Rai told ANI, “I am not committing anything but there is always a review, once the team manager submits his report, we will take a view on it.”

India conceded a series defeat to England, which has raised a number of questions on the team’s performance. Although the team gained an upper hand in some sessions of the Test series, the batsmen have been inconsistent and the bowlers, who impressed with their tight lines, failed to zip past the lower-order of the English batsmen.

Currently, England have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the Test series. India had lost the first Test at Edgbaston by 31 runs, chasing a target of 194. While the Men in Blue were blown away at Lord’s in the second game with an innings defeat and 159 runs, India bounced back with an improved performance to win the third Test in Nottingham by 203 runs.

However, in the fourth Test at Southampton, India had frittered the advantage they gained earlier in the first innings, with the English lower-order batsmen making merry in the second innings. Setting a target of 244, India were cruising at 123 for 3 at one stage, before collapsing to be all out for 184. It was the team’s third consecutive defeat in England.

Currently, at the fifth and last Test at The Oval, India are in a spot of bother, with a score of 174 for 6, in reply to England’s 332 in the first innings, and are trailing by 158 runs.

Neymar ‘Is My Key Player’, Says PSG Manager Thomas Tuchel

New Paris Saint-Germain head coach Thomas Tuchel insisted that Neymar is the “key player” for his side, as his team prepare for the start of their Ligue 1 title defence against Caen on Sunday. The stunning performances of Kylian Mbappe at the World Cup and consistent speculation linking Neymar with a move away from the club have left the Brazilian’s status as PSG’s star man somewhat in danger. “It’s totally clear that he’s my best player,” said Tuchel, who took over at the Parc des Princes from Unai Emery in May. “He’s one of the best players in the world. He’s an artist, a creative player, and for players like that, it’s easier if you don’t put too much pressure on them. That’s important.

“There are many ways to be a leader. For ‘Ney’, in my opinion, he’s our leader when he’s happy, happy in his game, in his creativity, and being an inspiration for others by taking risks.”

Neymar, the most expensive player of all-time, will be hoping to remind the PSG fans of his quality after missing the final three months of last season with an injury before being ridiculed for regular playacting at the World Cup.

In contrast, teenage sensation Mbappe shone in Russia, scoring four goals, including in France’s final victory over Croatia.

But Neymar did score 19 league goals in 20 games last term before his foot injury and made 13 assists.

German Tuchel was keen to play down concerns that the 26-year-old doesn’t work hard enough for the team.

“There are other people in the team who are responsible for defence, the structure of the team, but that’s not his job,” said the former Borussia Dortmund boss.

“There is not one single leader who has to manage everything on his shoulders, but Neymar is of course one of them (leaders), that’s obvious.”

The capital-city giants host Caen at the Parc des Princes looking for a second straight domestic title, although all eyes will already be focused on their latest tilt at the Champions League with the group stage set to start on September 18.

Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola Fumes Over Douglas Luiz Work Permit Rejection

Pep Guardiola says he is frustrated by Premier League champions Manchester City’s failure to obtain a work permit for Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz. Guardiola had planned on using the 20-year-old, signed from Vasco da Gama for 10.7 million pounds (USD 13.6million, 11.9million euros) last summer, in his first team squad this season, providing cover for ageing compatriot Fernandinho. Luiz appeared destined for an important role after City missed out on yet another Brazilian-born player, Italy international Jorginho, who opted to sign for Chelsea instead in July.

But City learned this week their work permit applications had been denied by the Football Association (FA) — who would support any such request to the Home Office — with Guardiola particularly upset by the timing of the decision.

“He (Luiz) is not allowed,” said Guardiola, who made a point of giving Luiz game time on their recent tour of the United States.

“We are going to try to help him to go on loan again and try to get the work permit.

“It’s so difficult for me to understand.

“One guy who doesn’t see the player or any training sessions every day has to judge if he has the ability and quality to play.

“I accept the rules but I don’t understand because anybody in the world can work wherever he wants.

“The manager from Brazil and myself know more than the guys who decide he is not able to play.”

‘Thank you Jurgen’

Guardiola, whose biggest investment in the close season transfer market was in Algerian international Riyad Mahrez paying 60million pounds to Leicester City, said he would have preferred greater warning than being told on the day the transfer window came down.

“They didn’t know him, not one game, not one training session, to know if he can play or not,” he said.

“I would have preferred it if it wasn’t announced yesterday.

“If they decide the rules are the rules, let me know 15 days ago and maybe we can decide what we can do but one day before and you decide he can’t play because, I don’t know, he is not tall enough, doesn’t play enough, games in the past or something like that? Okay.”

Guardiola, who will have England striker Raheem Sterling and Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne available for Sunday’s opener with Arsenal after they returned from their post FIFA World Cup holidays, refused to fall into the trap laid by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp earlier on Friday saying City are the clear favourites for the title.

Klopp has spent the most of any manager in the Premier League in the close season and may have been trying to shift some of the huge weight of expectations on his and his team’s shoulders.

“Thank you Jurgen,” joked Guardiola.

“But for nine years I’ve lived with it, no problem.

Luka Modric To Stay At Real Madrid, Confirms Manager Julen Lopetegui

Luka Modric To Stay At Real Madrid, Confirms Manager Julen Lopetegui

Real Madrid’s new manager Julen Lopetegui has dismissed all the speculations over their Croatian star player Luka Modric’s future. Modric — who played a key role in taking his national team to the FIFA World Cup 2018 final — was linked with a move to Serie A giants Inter Milan in the ongoing transfer window. However, Lopetegui has cleared the air saying Modric is a passionate player and he will remain at Real Madrid. The Spanish also added that he has no doubts over Modric’s choice to stay with the three-peat Champions League holders. “Luka is a player that I am passionate about and I love,” Lopetegui was quoted as saying by Sky Sports after Madrid’s 3-1 pre-season victory over Juventus.

“I think he’ll be pleased with what he’s going to get from me. He will be happy playing football at Real Madrid.

“Luka is a Real Madrid player and I have no doubt that he will stay here. We have enjoyed it and we will continue enjoying it without any doubt,” the 51-year-old manager added.

Modric joined Real Madrid in the year 2012. He has developed himself as the premier midfielder in the side alongside German star Toni Kroos.

The 32-year-old Croatian has also helped Real Madrid clinch the Spanish league title, Copa del Rey once each since then.

Modric was also the key in Madrid’s four time Champions League victory, three-time UEFA Super Cup and identical number of times FIFA Club World Cup victories since he joined the club.

Modric was also awarded the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball in 2018.

Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola Says Repeat Of Record-Breaking Season ‘Impossible’

Guardiola’s men broke 11 records in all but the former Barcelona coach envisages a far more difficult campaign when the action kicks-off next month.

“We are not going to break any more records in the Premier League, it is impossible… it is almost impossible,” Guardiola said Tuesday ahead of his team’s International Champions Cup friendly with Liverpool in New Jersey on Wednesday.

“I have to see the faces of my players in the next two weeks when they are together because we are here without 15 players. When we come back we have four or five days to prepare for [the Community Shield] against Chelsea and we are going to see their faces.

“The target is win the next game and how to prepare to win the game, that is the target. The records we took last season was a consequence of what we’ve done every single day. That is the point.

“If we are going to compare November, December, January, comparing the position, we are going to lose all the comparisons with what we have done last season.”

Guardiola meanwhile signed a new contract in May which ties him to Manchester City until 2021 – the longest commitment he’s ever made since becoming a manager in 2008.

The Spaniard knows, however, that nothing is certain.

“When we decided to extend the contract, first of all I am comfortable, the second one is the club trust what we are doing,” he said.

“The people at the club … know it depends on results. We have three more years contract, but the results will dictate what will happen in the future.

“If we are not able to be consistent and be there to win the title. That’s the most important thing to arrive in April and May and be there for the title.

“Football trainers always we are in a dangerous position.”

Guardiola meanwhile said he was unfazed by the lavish spending of City’s Premier League rivals.

Wednesday’s opponents, Liverpool, have splashed out £250 million ($328 million) since January in a bid to build a team capable of challenging for the title.

Guardiola has only brought in £60 million Riyad Mahrez from Leicester in the close season but remains happy with the nucleus of the squad which saw him dominate the Premier League last term.

“Every club does what they believe, I understand completely,” said the City manager when asked about Liverpool’s activity in the transfer market.

“They are contenders to win the title, Liverpool are always a contender because of the history they have.

“I am not concerned what someone says one day. If Liverpool believe they need these players for this kind of money, that’s fine. If they think it’s best for them, that’s perfect for them.

“All the contenders, United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham will be stronger.”

Google to Shut Down ‘Save to Google’, ‘Bookmark Manager’ Chrome Extensions: Report

Google has had a Chrome extension called ‘Save to Google’ feature for a while now. The ‘Save’ functionality was first launched by Google for its Image Search and then in the Search app on Android. However, according to the latest reports, the search giant has now decided to shut down the feature. While the reason for the move is yet unclear, Google has also reportedly scheduled deprecation of another Chrome extension called ‘Bookmark Manager’. Both the Chrome extensions were last updated on July 19 and they are set to shut down on August 15 this year.

As per a 9to5Google report, the ‘Save to Google’ extension for Chrome is set to be discontinued next month. As per a yellow warning message on the extension, Google has announced that the extension will be discontinued starting on the August 15. As of now, there is no clarity on what will happen to the pages that users might have saved over the years. However, the report says that you will still be able to view them via the ‘Saved’ site. The message also includes a link to ‘View saves’, suggesting that Google is just changing the way users save the pages via desktop.

Google had released ‘Save to Google’ Chrome extension back in April 2016 in to let users save particular images and links. This Save feature, announced in November 2015, was later renamed to ‘Saved’. The report says that the feature became more prominent in 2017 when Google mobile search and the Google app added a quick shortcut to access the saved photos and links. When it comes to Android, the Google Chrome custom tabs opened through Search or the Feed has the ‘Save’ button in the app bar. Meanwhile, the desktop website was recently updated to match mobile with a shared responsive design that adopts Google’s Material Design.

As per another 9to5Google report, the ‘Bookmark Manager’ Chrome extension is also set to shut down on August 15 in favour of Google’s built-in manager. To be clear, the Chrome extension that is downloadable from the Web Store will be affected and the tool found at ‘chrome://bookmarks’ will remain intact. The move by Google makes sense as the company had refreshed the bookmark feature with Material Design last year. This had made the interface easier to browse, while search features in the app bar.
