Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh election results: These are main reasons of BJP defeat

10 main points of amritsar nirankari bhawan grenade attack

Centralisation Of Power One Of India’s Main Problems

Mr Rajan said ever since the corruption scandals hit India, bureaucracy had stepped back.

New Delhi:

Excessive centralisation of power in the political decision making is one of India’s main problems, former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has said, as he highlighted the recent unveiling of the ‘Statue of Unity’ as an example of the project that required the approval of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Speaking at the University of California in Berkley on Friday, Mr Rajan said part of the problem in India was that there is an excessive centralisation of power in the political decision making.

On the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat’s Narmada district on October 31.

Touted to be the tallest statue in the world, the 182-metre tall statue was built at a cost of Rs 2,989 crore. The concrete and brass-clad statue is the quickest to be completed in 33 months.

Part of the problem in India is that there is an excessive centralisation of power in the political decision making, Mr Rajan, said.

“India can’t work from the Center. India works when you have many people taking up the burden. And today the central government is excessively centralised,” he said.

Mr Rajan said an example of this was the quantum of decisions that required the assent of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Nobody wants to take a decision, unless it has approval up there, which means even if the Prime Minister works 18 hours a day, a very hard-working prime minister, there is only so much time he has, Mr Rajan said.

The kind of project that gets done depends on the Prime Minister, he said.

“For example, we build this massive statue, the Sardar Patel statue on time,” Mr Rajan said amidst laughter and applause from the audience.

“That suggests that when there is a will there is a way. Can we find that will for everything else?” he asked.

In addition to excessive centralisation, the unwillingness of the bureaucracy, including in the public sector to take initiatives, is another major problem, he said.

Mr Rajan said ever since the corruption scandals hit India, the bureaucracy had stepped back.

Born in 1963 in Bhopal, Mr Rajan was the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between September 2013 and September 2016.

After Parliament Dissolution, Sri Lankan Main Party To Challenge Sacking In Court

President Maithripala Sirisena dissolved the parliament on Friday. (File)

Colombo, Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka’s largest single party Saturday said it will mount a legal challenge against “tyrant” President Maithripala Sirisena’s shock sacking of the legislature. “We will go to the courts,” Mangala Samaraweera from the United National Party (UNP) told reporters in Colombo. “We will fight in the courts, we will fight in parliament and we will fight at the polls.”

Samaraweera said his party had supported Sirisena to come to power in January 2015, hoping he would be a benevolent leader like Nelson Mandela of South Africa, but that he had shown himself to be a “tyrant.”

“He (Sirisena) came to power promising to be a Mandela, but we ended up getting a Mugabe, a mad man,” Samaraweera said, referring to Zimbabwe’s strongman former president Robert Mugabe.

He said the UNP along with its allies had an absolute majority in the 225-member assembly and despite the sacking of the assembly, the party would publicly demonstrate its majority to the people.

“We will demonstrate to the public of Sri Lanka our majority. Maithripala Sirisena dissolved a parliament where we enjoyed a majority,” he said.

“We will fight the emerging tyranny of Sirisena. We will fight it in the courts, fight it in parliament and we are also ready to fight against this tyranny at the polls.

“We are on the right side of democracy, we are sure we can win this battle,” he added.

He said Sirisena had “kicked the constitution in the teeth” when he dismissed the assembly after failing to muster a majority to legitimise his replacement prime minister Mahinda Rajapakse after a two-week stand off.

Congress Main Anchor Of Opposition Unity Against BJP: Chandrababu Naidu

Chennai:

Continuing his efforts to forge a grand alliance against the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Friday met DMK President MK Stalin and urged opposition parties to sink their differences in the interest of the nation and democracy.

“We are all together in bringing parties on one platform. One or two may have differences of opinion. We (TDP) had differences with Congress for 40 years but at the same time now we are working how to bring together all. Democracy is important. It is for people to sink their differences. People are prepared now,” he told reporters after an hour-long meeting with Mr Stalin at his residence.

Mr Naidu said he had a meeting with former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru on Thursday. “I am in touch with Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal Chief Minister) and would be meeting her soon as part of these efforts,” he said.

Recalling his meeting with Congress President Rahul Gandhi last week in the national capital, he said, “All of us want to join together and save the nation.”

The Telugu Desam Party chief deftly avoided answering questions on who will be the face of the opposition grouping against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“There are so many leaders. Even Stalinji is better than Modi. We might have differences with Congress. But when you think of nation, national interest is utmost importance. Everybody is joining together on one platform. Today, you are talking of individuals. I am taking of democracy. If democracy survives only then you can elect leaders. If there is no democracy, there is nothing.”

Replying to a question, Mr Naidu said Rahul Gandhi is the Congress President and is the main anchor for the opposition against the BJP and his party has an all India presence.

“We are regional parties. Even Mamata Banerjee is strong in West Bengal. I am strong in Andhra Pradesh. Deve Gowda is strong in Karnataka and Stalin is strong in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

To another question, Naidu said he was not the face of the opposition grouping. “I am not an aspirant. I am only a facilitator. I will bring everybody together,” he said.

On his part, Mr Stalin said that he welcomes Mr Naidu’s efforts to bring together opposition parties against the anti-people and communal government of PM Modi.

“I have already welcomed his meeting with Congress President on this account. Naidu has told me that he was planning to convene a meeting of like-minded parties either in Delhi or any other state capital to draw up a strategy to defeat BJP in the Lok Sabha polls. I have accepted his invitation,” he said.

Both the leaders attacked the Modi government for undermining the autonomy of institutions like the RBI, CBI, office of Governors, saying that democracy and the nation were under immense threat.

Signature Bridge’s Main Inaugural Function Went Smoothly: Delhi Police

New Delhi:

Even as Delhi BJP unit president Manoj Tiwari and his supporters entered into a scuffle with AAP members and the police at the inaugural event of the Signature Bridge, the Delhi Police has maintained that the main function went smoothly.

Mr Tiwari and his supporters reached the venue to protest against his non-invitation to the event despite being the Member of Parliament from the area.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia were not present when the protest took place.

Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern range) said, “Our staff on duty at the place of function performed their task with utmost restraint and diligence. The main function was held smoothly without any disturbance”.

The officer said even though there was slogan shouting, the police segregated the groups and did not allow any clash or violence to take place.

In a video of the incident, Mr Tiwari can be seen getting into a scuffle with policemen, including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) RP Meena.

Another officer requesting anonymity said there was a huge crowd of more than 5,000 people to witness the programme and the police did their best to avoid any mishap.

“It was a vulnerable place (bridge). If things had gone out of control, it could have even resulted in a free fall or a stampede,” he added.

The point of contention was that Mr Tiwari wanted to get on the stage as it was his constituency whereas the organisers did not want that, the police said.
