Fun Facts From This Year’s List Of Nominees

The nominations for the 91st Oscars were announced Tuesday, with Roma and The Favourite leading the pack. But the statistical quirks that the annual event throws up can be as intriguing as tracking which movies get the most nods.

Here are some fun facts and figures from this year’s list of nominees:

Netflix’s big step forward

Streaming giant Netflix took a major step forward in its quest to be both a distribution king and a purveyor of quality original content with 14 Oscar nominations, including its first for best picture for Roma.

Roma earned 10 nods, while The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – the latest from Joel and Ethan Coen — scored three. The last Netflix nomination went to End Game, which is up for best documentary short subject.

Netflix claimed a 15th nomination for another documentary short, Period: End of Sentencebut it was not listed as a Netflix production in the Academy’s press kit.

In 2018, the company earned eight nominations, half of them for Mudbound. In the years before, Netflix had just a handful of nominations, all in documentary categories.

By comparison, Amazon Studios – which had already broken through in the best picture category in 2017 with Manchester by the Sea – earned three nominations for steamy Polish love story Cold War.

Wakanda forever

For many moviegoers, the Oscars have become somewhat elitist, often rewarding art house fare that not many have seen. But those fans cannot complain this year.

Marvel superhero blockbuster Black Panther – the highest-grossing film of 2018 in North America — scored seven nominations including one for best picture, becoming the first movie based on a comic book to earn the honor.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, who stars in the film, posted footage on Twitter of the cast celebrating when excerpts from the film premiered at San Diego Comic-Con.

“Seven #OscarNoms for Black Panther, including best picture!! This is our reaction the first time we saw footage from the film and we’re feeling this way all over again today! Thank you @TheAcademy! #WakandaForever,” she wrote on Twitter.

Beyond its best picture nomination, Black Panther earned nods for costume design, original score, original song (rapper Kendrick Lamar is a nominee in that category), production design, and sound mixing and editing.

Alfonso Cuaron reigns supreme

Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, a black-and-white cinematic ode to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City — and the mother and nanny who raised him – earned a whopping 10 nominations to lead the contenders.

But the Mexican filmmaker himself scored an impressive feat — four of those nominations are his: for best picture as a producer, best director, best original screenplay and best cinematography.

He joins illustrious company with his achievement: Warren Beatty did the same, scoring four nominations in four different categories – twice – for Heaven Can Wait and Reds.

Joel and Ethan Coen did it for No Country for Old Men.

Snubs and surprises

Industry watchers were shocked that Bradley Cooper was snubbed in the best director category for A Star Is Born – but earned three nominations for best actor, best adapted screenplay and best picture (as a producer).

But they were thrilled to see Spike Lee earn his first directing nomination for BlacKkKlansman. It was his fifth overall — counting two others for the same film. The US filmmaker earned a lifetime achievement award at the 2016 Oscars.

Another major name left off the list was Timothee Chalamet, who had been seen as a likely contender for best supporting actor for his portrayal of a drug addict in Beautiful Boy.

And many expected Won’t You Be My Neighbor? – a critically acclaimed documentary about US children’s show host Mister Rogers — to make the cut. It did not.

A happy surprise was a best actress nomination for breakout Roma star Yalitza Aparicio in her debut performance.

For Oscars watcher Sasha Stone, the new voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences “really did show up and vote in ways we’ve not really seen in the Oscar race, just not in ways we thought they might…surprised. A little weirded out.”

Kerala To Revise List Of Women Who Entered Sabarimala After Discrepancies

The Kerala government said that over 50 women of menstruating age have entered the Sabarimala temple.

Thiruvananthapuram:

Stung by widespread criticism over the numerous errors in the list of women who prayed at the Sabrimala temple, the Kerala government has decided to re-prepare the list.

A counsel of state government had presented the list in the Supreme Court on Friday, which reportedly had discrepancies in the age and names of women. The list was taken from the records of the online system, through which pilgrims register for having “darshan”.

The row erupted over flaws in the actual age of some of the 51 women, whom the counsel had referred to in the list as “banned” — on account of they being of menstruating age group of 10 to 50 years — who prayed at the temple this season.

State police chief Loknath Behera on Saturday asked senior officials to revise the list, which included even the name of men, besides several of the women above 50.

State Devasom (temples) Minister Kadakampally Surendran told the media that his department has no role in the preparation of the list, while the president of the Travancore Devasom Board – custodian of the temple, A. Padmakumar said they are not responsible for this as they do not prepare statistics of the pilgrims in the temple.

Kanam Rajendran, state secretary of the Communist Party of India – the second biggest ally of the ruling Pinarayi Vijayan government, said the entire responsibility of what has happened lies with the state government.

But the Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan, the closest aide of Mr Vijayan, defended him by saying that it is not just 51 women, but so many women have had “darshan” at the temple.

Kanaka Durga and Bindu Ammini, both in the “banned” age group of 10 to 50 years, prayed at the Sabarimala temple.

It was after they approached the apex court seeking security for having safe “darshan” that a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice L. Nageswara Rao and Justice Dinesh Maheshwari directed the state government to arrange adequate protection for them.

The list of 51 women is not part of an affidavit but only referred to by the state government counsel in his arguments. Soon the list was highlighted in the media.

“This goof-up reveals the abject failure of the way Vijayan is running the state,” said state BJP president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai.

charges and allegations between BJP and AAP for Delhi’s voter list

Kerala’s List Of 51 Women Who Entered Sabarimala Has A Tamil Nadu Man

Several women of the “banned” age group tried to enter the Sabarimala temple, but stopped by protesters.

Thiruvananthapuram:

The Kerala government today claimed that 51 women between the ages of 10 and 50 have entered the Sabarimala temple since the Supreme Court’s September verdict allowing women of reproductive age into the shrine. A list of names along with their age and Aadhaar details was also submitted in the court.

But many of the women who featured on this list say the claim isn’t entirely correct. In fact, a 42-year-old woman mentioned in the list turned out to be a man from Tamil Nadu.

Kerala Minister Kadakampally Surendran had told reporters that over 7,500 women below 50 seeking darshan at Sabarimala had registered online. “We could confirm this through their Aadhaar details. Among those, 51 have utilised this facility and gone to the temple. We don’t have any provision to verify their age except through their official documents,” said the Devaswom Minister.

But many who are part of the list claim that they are 50 or above. And others blame errors on their Aadhaar cards.

NDTV called up over 15 women from the list, most of them from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, after their details were leaked soon after the hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday. The court had refused to admit the document from the state lawyers saying they would only focus on the security of women who entered Sabarimala.

The document identifies Deivasigamani as a 42-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu, but NDTV found out that Deivasigamani is a man.

In another instance, a man from Tamil Nadu said that his mother went to Sabarimala, but her age on the Aadhar card is wrong. “I was born in 1984, then how can my mother be less than 50. But there is an error on her Aadhar card, and so the actual age of my mother is not shown.”

He also said that a group came to their home asking if a woman below 50 had entered Sabarimala. “We are worried for our safety,” he said.

Chandira from Tamil Nadu has been mentioned in the list as a 48-year-old. However, her relative showed us her voter ID card which shows that she was born in 1956 making her 63.

“The Aadhar card shows her birth year as 1970. But that is wrong”, the relative said, showing NDTV the Aadhar copy too

Padmavathy from Andhra Pradesh has been shown as 48 on the list, but when contacted, she said she was 55.

“The only way we can identify the age of people who registered online is through documents submitted to us. Since it’s confirmed they arrived, where else will they go except for Sannidhanam,” Mr Surendran told NDTV.

Rahul Eashwar, a member of the Sabarimala tantri family, said the manner in which the Kerala government has misled the top court is “outrageous”.

“I myself called up five such women. All of them said they are above 50 years of age,” said Mr Eashwar.

“I was surprised when one of the women said she never went to Sabarimala. It’s a very grave matter that the Kerala government has come out with such a list,” he said.

State BJP president PS Sreedharan Pillai said the Kerala government list is the “biggest lie”.

Narayana Varma, a member of the Pandalam royal family, also rejected the government claims. “Nothing of the sort happened. We will believe only in truth, and what has been said is not true,” said Mr Varma.

BSP Files Case In Uttar Pradesh After Fake List Of Candidates For General Elections Goes Viral

Uttar Pradesh BSP files case after fake list of candidates goes viral on social media

Lucknow:

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh has alleged that a fake list of candidates for the general elections has purposely been made viral on social media to “malign” the party. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in Lucknow on Monday, by the police after state party president, RS Khushwaha, filed a complaint, claiming that the signature on the list was not his.

The police have registered a case against under sections including fraud, conspiracy and cheating by impersonation.

The row over the fake list comes days after the the two UP heavyweights, BSP and Samajwadi Party (SP) formalised their alliance for the general elections. The two parties have announced that they would contest 38 seats each, leaving two seats for smaller allies.

BSP chief Mayawati claimed the alliance will give sleepless nights to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah. Regional parties like Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress have welcomed the BSP-SP tie-up.

Though the alliance it is expected to be a headache for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “Gathbandhan or mahagathbandhan, we will do better than 2014.”

In 2014, the BJP and its ally Apna Dal had won 73 out of the state’s 80 parliamentary seats.
