Party Open For Alliance, Says AIADMK Leader D Jayakumar

D Jayakumar indicated that a clearer picture would emerge as the elections approach.

Chennai:

Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar Tuesday said its doors were open for an alliance and indicated that any decision on a poll pact would emerge only ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

He said the AIADMK was not involved in any alliance talks right now.

His remarks came amidst speculation of the regional party possibly tying up with the BJP for the coming Parliamentary elections.

Matters like electoral alliances were decided not by individuals, but party committees like the parliamentary board, general council and the executive, he told reporters.

“We have not closed our doors for alliance. The doors are very much open. But who is to be included, who is not required, these decisions cannot be made by an individual,” Mr Jayakumar said.

He indicated that a clearer picture would emerge as the elections approach.

Mr Jayakumar, the Tamil Nadu fisheries minister, however, exuded confidence that his party was capable of winning all 40 Lok Sabha seats– 39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry– besides putting up a good show in the bypolls to 20 assembly segments.

To a question on popular cinema star Ajith Kumar ruling out taking the political plunge, MR Jayakumar lauded the actor for making his stand clear on the subject.

He praised the actor for devotion to his work and for his grit. He recalled Ajith Kumar had complained to then chief minister M Karunanidhi, at a cinema event, that actors were being forced to take a stand on sensitive political issues, like the Cauvery dispute and the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils.

PM Modi Desperate To Appoint Pliant CBI Director: Congress Leader

Anand Sharma alleged that PM Modi is “desperate” to select and appoint a “pliant” CBI Director

New Delhi:

Ahead of the January 24 meeting of the high-powered committee on selection of CBI director, the Congress said Monday the process should be transparent and appointment based on merit and seniority.

Senior spokesperson of the Congress Anand Sharma said any officer against whom there are question marks or any kind of charges should not be considered for empanelment as that would be “a gross miscarriage of justice”.

He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “desperate” to select and appoint a “pliant” CBI Director to “buy future protection for all kinds of acts of omission and commission of his government”.

The former union minister said it is imperative that all matters that were considered by the Supreme Court when the new process of the appointment of CBI Director was introduced, are followed.

Prime Minister Modi heads the three-member panel. The other two members are Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and the Leader of the largest opposition party in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress.

“It should be transparent process. The selection should be based on merit, seniority…No officer against whom there is any question mark, any charges during the service career should be considered for empanelment otherwise that would be a gross miscarriage of justice. That is what we want,” Mr Sharma told reporters.

The meeting of the high-powered committee is slated on January 24 to select the new CBI Director after the panel ousted Alok Verma from the post earlier this month. Kharge had given a dissent note against Mr Verma’s removal.

Police Complaint Filed After Nepal Spiritual Leader Ram Bahadur Bomjon’s Followers Disappear

Ram Bahadur Bomjon gained attention after devotees claimed he meditated for months

Kathmandu:

The Nepal police have launched a search for five missing followers of a Buddhist spiritual leader, popularly known as “Buddha Boy”, after their families filed complaints against the godman, officials said in Kathmandu today.

Ram Bahadur Bomjon gained global media attention in 2005 after his devotees claimed that he meditated for months without food, water or sleeping.

Later, he got embroiled into controversies after several of his followers and their relatives accused him of assaulting them sexually and physically. However, his aides rejected the accusations.

According to the police, following complaints of the families of five of Bomjon’s followers, they launched a search operation.

The families in their complaint claimed that the followers, including women, have gone missing from his ashram located in Bara district. On Sunday, the family of a nun from Sarlahi, who has been reportedly missing from the ashram for the past nine years, has asked the police to find her whereabouts.

Earlier, the families of four other followers, including a girl, had filed police complaints stating that they lost touch with them in the ashram of the godman.

BSP Leader Threatens Beheading Over Offensive Remarks Against Mayawati

BJP legislator Sadhana Singh had used offensive terms against Mayawati at a recent rally.

Lucknow:

Even as politicians cutting across party lines condemned BJP legislator Sadhana Singh’s offensive remarks against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati for joining forces with former rival Samajwadi Party, a supporter of the Dalit leader went a step further on Monday. He declared that he wouldn’t be averse to offering a ransom of Rs 50 lakh to whoever beheads Ms Singh.

“We will launch protests if Sadhana Singh does not apologise to Behenji (Mayawati) and other women of this country. After collecting money from my supporters, I will give Rs 50 lakh to the person who will bring her head to me,” news agency ANI quoted Vijay Yadav, a former BSP legislator, as saying.

The controversial remark by Mr Yadav came after the Mughalsarai legislator called the BSP chief a “blot on womankind” for joining hands with the same party that had targeted her at a Lucknow guest house in 1995. “Mayawati sold her dignity for power and joined hands with those who disrespected her… She is a blot on womankind. Cannot say if she can be counted among men or women, she is worse than a transgender person,” she had said at a rally on Saturday.

While BSP leader SC Misra tweeted that “BJP leaders have lost their mental balance after the BSP-Samajwadi Party alliance”, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale said such personal comments should not be made. A BSP leader lodged a complaint against Ms Singh at the Baburi police station.

Immediately afterwards, the BJP legislator responded with a clarification that she did not intend to insult anybody. “I just wanted to remind Mayawati about the help extended to her by BJP leaders in 1995,” she added.

Samajwadi Party leaders had attacked Mayawati and her supporters at the Meerabai Guest House in Lucknow on June 2, 1995, soon after she withdrew support to the Mulayam Singh Yadav government. However, the two parties mended bridges after the emergence of Akhilesh Yadav as the Samajwadi Party chief and will now be fighting the Lok Sabha polls against the BJP together.

Karnataka Congress Leader Anand Singh Files FIR Against Colleague Over Alleged Assault

Congress lawmaker Anand Singh was injured after an alleged assault at a Karnataka resort

Bengaluru:

A Congress lawmaker in Karnataka has filed a complaint against his colleague for allegedly assaulting him during their stay at a resort on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Anand Singh was allegedly thrashed, punched and threatened by JN Ganesh on Saturday evening after which the former had to be rushed to a hospital.

Anand Singh has filed a First Information Report or FIR today, in which he alleged that Mr Ganesh abused him, beat him with a stick, pushed him to the wall and threatened to kill him. He also claimed that he will finish his career, the FIR alleged.

Mr Ganesh has been suspended till an inquiry by the Congress Committee headed by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara is completed.

The Congress, which had driven 76 of the party’s 80 legislators in the Karnataka Assembly to the Eagleton resort to thwart what they describe as the BJP’s attempt to poach Congressmen, has since given multiple versions of why Anand Singh had to be rushed to the hospital, including chest pain and a fall.

In his complaint, Anand Singh said that after dinner when he was headed to his my room with Mr Ganesh, he started abusing him and accused him of not helping him financially during elections.

“He threatened to kill my sister, son and other family members. When I objected, he got furious. He pushed me and I fell down. Then he kicked me and punched me in the face that left my eyes and nose swallen. After that I lost consciousness. Tukaram, Raghumurty, Ramappa and Tanveer Sait, all legislators, then rescued me. If not for them, I wouldn’t have been alive today. When I gained conscious I found myself at the Apollo hospital. I demand legal action against JN Ganesh and adequate protection for my family,” his complaint added.

The Kampali legislator has admitted there was a fight, but added that it did not quite go the way it is believed so far.

“I, Anand Singh and Bheema Naik had a confrontation. We did not beat each other up. The quarrel snowballed. He (Anand Singh) slipped and suffered a few injuries,” Mr Ganesh claimed.

Mr Ganesh has apologised to Anand Singh’s family, but maintained that he never hit Anand Singh.

“I would like to apologise to their family (Anand Singh) if they’re hurt. Whatever the media is reporting is false,” Mr Ganesh said in his apology, reported news agency ANI.

Two of Congress’s 80 lawmakers are still “missing” and have been sent notice by the party for skipping a headcount on Friday. Anand Kumar, who had also been off the grid for days, made a comeback to the party fold last week.

AAP Leader Preeti Sharma Menon Says, Party Not To Contest Lok Sabha Polls In Maharashtra

We will devote all our strength on the seats where we are certain we can defeat them: Preeti Sharma Menon

New Delhi:

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today said “as of now” it has decided not to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.

The party will fight Lok Sabha polls in four states – Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Goa. But, it has decided not to contest in Maharashtra, AAP’s national spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon said today.

“As of now, we are not contesting any seat in Maharashtra, but the party may take a view on a few seats if we feel it will help defeat the BJP,” she said.

The party wants to save democracy from the “clutches” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, so “we will devote all our strength on the seats where we are certain we can defeat them,” Ms Menon said.

However, former AAP leader Mayank Gandhi said the decision shows the party is “dead” in Maharashtra, which has 48 Lok Sabha seats – the second highest number after Uttar Pradesh which has 80 parliamentary constituencies.

“Encouraging the worst kind of leadership at the behest of volunteers destroyed AAP”s ethos and soul. Only self-seeking people are left in the party now,” he claimed.

Mr Gandhi said if the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, which rules the Delhi Assembly, contests in Maharashtra, it may not even get a few thousand votes and become a “laughing stock”. Notably, the party had drawn a blank in the state in the 2014 general elections.

Dissident AAP leader Ravi Srivastava, who was one of its founder members, said the party”s position in Maharashtra was quite “weak”, so it was a wise decision not to contest the Lok Sabha polls in the state.

“The AAP fared very badly in the recent Assembly polls in Hindi heartland states. It couldn”t garner more than the NOTA (none of the above option for voters) votes polled. The party has miserably failed to expand its base outside Delhi and even its MPs and MLAs are quitting. So, it is a wise decision,” he said.

Since the last two years, AAP has suffered a setback in Maharashtra after its prominent leaders like Mayank Gandhi and Anjali Damania left the party. Its state executive committee was also disbanded sometime back

Women’s Panel Asks BJP Leader To Explain Insulting Remarks On Mayawati

Sadhana Singh on Saturday alleged that Ms Mayawati has traded her dignity for power.

New Delhi:

The BJP lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh, who called Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati “a blot on womankind” among other things, has been asked to explain her insulting remarks by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Sadhana Singh alleged that Ms Mayawati has traded her dignity for power. “She (Mayawati) has no self-respect… she was almost molested earlier and yet… in history, when Draupadi was molested, she took a vow to seek revenge… but this woman, she lost everything, but still sold her dignity for the sake of power. We strongly condemn Mayawati ji. She is a blot on womankind. A woman who gulped insults for comfort and power… is a blot on womankind,” the legislator from Mughalsarai, said at a rally on Saturday.

“Such derogatory statements are unbecoming of a leader and highly condemnable,” NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

We condemn the “extremely offensive, irresponsible and unethical” remarks, the women’s commission said. Ms Singh has to provide a “satisfactory explanation”, the note added.

The UP lawmaker’s insensitive comments were an apparent reference to the infamous episode when Ms Mayawati was assaulted by Samajwadi Party workers at a guest house in Lucknow in 1995 that triggered decades of animosity between the two parties. The leaders buried the hatchet last year and formed an alliance earlier this month to beat the BJP in the national elections.

Amid widespread criticism, Ms Singh apologized saying “she had no such intention to hurt anyone….”. “I regret what I said. I just shared a woman’s pain, and didn’t want to insult anyone,” Ms Singh said in a statement.

However, the BSP has already filed a complaint against her. “They have lost their mental balance in fear of losing the election in Uttar Pradesh,” said the BSP’s Satish Chandra Mishra.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who had declared that “insulting Mayawati ji is like insulting me” shortly after formalising their alliance, added that the “objectionable and filthy terms” used against Mayawati ji are deplorable. “They are a sign of BJP’s moral bankruptcy and frustration. It is also insulting for the women of this country,” he said.

“I will make it very difficult for you to enter the college,” NSUI leader tells girl.

Shahjahanpur:
