BCCI acting president steps in favor of Hardik Pandya – KL Rahul, says Give permission to play in New Zealand

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Case: Cricket Board Administrators Seek Appointment Of Ombudsman To Decide Fate

A bench comprising justices SA Bobde and AM Sapre said it will hear the matter after a week when senior advocate PS Narsimha takes over charge as amicus curiae in the matter.

The top court appointed Narsimha as amicus after senior advocate Gopal Subramanium withdrew his consent from being amicus curiae in the matter.

Senior advocate Parag Tripathi, appearing for the CoA, said that the court should direct appointment of ombudsman in the BCCI urgently as the fate of two young promising cricketers needs to be decided immediately.

The controversy was triggered by Pandya and Rahul’s much-condemned statements on ‘Koffee with Karan’ in which they spoke about hook-ups with multiple women and being casual about it even with their parents.

The comments have been described as “inappropriate” by India skipper Virat Kohli.

“People Make Mistakes”: Sourav Ganguly Defends Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul might not fetch much support from the cricket fraternity for their indecent comments on a TV show, but former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has backed the duo and said “people make mistakes.” Ganguly further stressed on his point by saying, “we are all human beings and it is not necessary that everything we do comes out perfectly”. The 46-year-old Ganguly also said they should move on from here and make sure they don’t repeat such a mistake again.

“I haven’t watched that episode. I watch ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’. Jokes apart, I feel that you can’t generalise that only modern day cricketers should behave responsibly. People make mistakes. Let’s not get too far into that,” Ganguly said.

“I am sure whoever has done it will realise that and come out as a better person. We are all human beings. We are not machines that everything you put in comes out perfect. You have just got to live life and let others live. They are responsible people. They may be role models but they are under pressure all the time to perform,” he added.

“Certain things happen in life and as everyone, we should move on and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

Ganguly also said that modern day cricketers are responsible and Virat Kohli is a fantastic role model for the same.

“I feel modern day cricketers are also responsible, disciplined and obedient. In life, certain things happen and you make some mistakes so, let’s not get too far into that. Look at Virat Kohli, he is such a fantastic role model. India is a fortunate country. Every generation produces players who all of us cherish,” Ganguly said.

Pandya and Rahul were slammed over their comments. Despite an apology to fans and their own teammates, Pandya and Rahul were suspended by the BCCI and ousted from a three-match ODI series against Australia in Sydney.

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Give Their Statements To BCCI CEO Rahul Johri

Suspended India players Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul on Tuesday gave their statements to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri, initiating the inquiry into their much-condemned comments on women that have split the Committee of Administrators (CoA). It is learnt that both players deposed via telephone after having tendered unconditional apologies in reply to the fresh show cause notices issued by the BCCI. The CEO spoke to them via telephone. However, his brief was simple as the inquiry initiator. He has to just collate whatever they have written in their show cause reply.

“Rahul Johri is expected to submit his report to CoA by tomorrow,” a BCCI official, privy to the development, told PTI.

However, it is learnt the CEO did not ask any questions on whether their agents pressurised them into attending the chat show and also speaking in the manner that they did.

“Any investigative question is the purview of the ombudsman. Now the next phase will only happen if the SC appoints an ombudsman or an ad-hoc ombudsman is appointed,” he said.

The two players had spoken about hooking up with multiple women and being casual about it even with their parents on ‘Koffee with Karan’, triggering an online storm.

CoA chief Vinod Rai recommended a two-match ban on the duo but his colleague Diana Edulji took the matter to the BCCI legal cell, which refused to call the players’ actions a violation of the code of conduct and recommended the appointment of an ombudsman.

The BCCI office-bearers seconded Edulji and even went to the extent of demanding a Special General Meeting to discuss the matter. Rai, on the other hand, has cautioned against going too far.

In an e-mail to Edulji, he has stated that the “BCCI is not in the business of ending young careers”.

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Said Some Wrong Things But Others Have Made Bigger Mistakes: S Sreesanth

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were ordered to return from Australia after their comments on a popular TV chat show sparked an outrage on social media. The duo, who were suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from playing any form of cricket, drew flak from all quarters for their comments about women. The BCCI has also set up an inquiry against the Pandya and Rahul. But S Sreesanth feels that Indian cricket needs both of them as the duo are match-winners and will be crucial in the upcoming World Cup 2019.

“I will only say that whatever happened was very bad, but the World Cup is around the corner. Both Hardik and Rahul are both good cricketers,” Sreesanth said.

“I will only say to Hardik and Rahul, that surely they are both match-winners and sooner or later they will be back on the field. Yes, I know how difficult it is for a cricketer to miss the game and I just hope BCCI allows them to play, once they realise I am sure they should be playing where they should be playing,” the former India pace bowler added.

Sreesanth said that those who had made bigger mistakes than Rahul and Pandya had gotten away with it in the past.

“Yes, what happened was wrong. They said some wrong things. But there are others whose have made bigger mistakes than these, who are still playing and are in different fields not just cricket. The same people are speaking about this. When they see an opportunity they pounce on it like tigers,” Sreesanth said.

Sreesanth hoped that his ban on playing first class cricket in India would be lifted soon.

“On top of that, if my ban gets lifted this month or next month, then I will be the happiest…,” he said, adding that if the ban is eventually lifted, he would like to test himself in first class matches before taking a call on fighting for a chance to represent Team India again.

Sreesanth said that he would just walk away from the game if he realised that he is not up to scratch.

Sreesanth was arrested in a spot fixing scandal in 2013 and was banned for life.

“If not, I will call it a day because a lot of youngsters are there and it will be great for Indian cricket as well as my Kerala state. I should not be hanging around because I am Sreesanth and the ban got lifted. I will be more than happy with all the respect. If I am not doing well, I will walk away from the game,” Sreesanth said.

“Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Will Learn From Mistakes”: Umpire Simon Taufel Backs Duo

“I knew this question was going to come up. Look what I would say in every team and in every business and every sport, is that good people make a good team. And that we all make mistakes from time to time. We all learn as we go,” Taufel, 47, told reporters in Kolkata on Monday.

“Although, I didn’t see the show, I have read little bit of press about some of the complaints. I have made plenty of mistakes in my career and I have learnt along the way.

“These players may have made some mistakes with some of the things that they have said. But they too will learn and all the other players and all the other people that have seen this event will also learn,” he added.

Considering the duo’s career ahead, Taufel cautioned that the issue should be handled carefully and hoped that they would learn from their mistakes and become better persons.

“So I think we really need to be careful about being overly critical. People do make mistakes but if we learn from those and we are genuine about wanting to do better, and commit to doing better then that’s a good thing,” he said.

“These players have got their careers to get through like you make a mistake in the first ball but you still got the day to get through.

“And I am sure they have got some good people around them and some good advice. I am sure they will come out of this okay and they will get through it. If they are genuine and they learn from that, I think they will become better as a result,” he added.

Taufel, who stood in 74 Tests, beginning at the young age of 29, also lavished praise on Virat Kohli, while singling out an innings in the 2012 CB series against Sri Lanka in Hobart where the Indian captain made an unbeaten 133.

“Every shot in the innings was in the middle of the bat. He was almost faultless,” said Taufel, who also stood in 174 ODIs and 34 T20Is.

Taufel added that Kohli has now found out how to bring the best out of him and he is now comfortable in being who he is.

“Virat’s now finding or has found what it takes to be a good leader. He grew up idolising Sachin Tendulkar and under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

“They have had a huge impact on his career. But Virat Kohli is his own man. He has found out what it takes to be the best Virat Kohli he can be,” he added.

Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Tender “Unconditional Apology” Over TV Show Comments

“Yes, Hardik and Rahul have submitted their reply to the fresh showcause notices that were served to them. They have tendered unconditional apology. The CoA chief has instructed the CEO to conduct an inquiry as per clause 41 (c) of the new BCCI constitution,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Edulji fears a “cover up” in the controversy, triggered by Pandya and Rahul’s much-condemned statements on Koffee with Karan in which they spoke about hookups with multiple women and being casual about it even with their parents. The comments have been described as “inappropriate” by India skipper Virat Kohli.

Brought back midway from the tour of Australia, Pandya and Rahul’s immediate fate hangs in balance with World Cup 2019 less than four months away. Rai, in an e-mail to Edulji, said that the “BCCI is not in the business of ending young careers”.

“Please be assured that the desire to conduct the inquiry is not a desire to ”cover up”. The interest of cricket in India has to be kept in mind. The off the ground act of the players was deplorable. It was crass as I said immediately after reading the comments,” Rai wrote.

“It is our responsibility to reprimand them, take corrective action, sensitise them of their misdemeanour and then get them back on to the ground once they have suffered the consequences,” he said.

The former CAG stated in his mail that players have been “shamed” after being recalled from an international tour, the ongoing ODI series against Australia, and principles of natural justice demands that they be heard.

“We have shamed them by recalling them from an ongoing tour. We have suspended them from further games. We need to correct them and not bring their career to a cul de sac by indefinitely delaying a decision. These misdemeanours require swift action, with a corrective approach,” he added.

The road to redemption for the duo could prove to be a tricky. Rai has instructed BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to carry out a preliminary inquiry but board members along with Edulji want otherwise.

Rai justified Johri initiating the probe, citing the BCCI constitution. Edulji feels Johri, because of past allegations of sexual harassment against him, should not be entrusted with the task.

“The CEO must fulfil his duty as per Rule 41(C) and conduct the inquiry after receiving the explanation of the players. He must ensure that the norms of natural justice are fulfilled,” Rai said.
