Jio GigaFiber Tops Netflix ISP Speed Index for October 2018 in India

Netflix has released its latest monthly ISP speed index and Reliance Jio GigaFiber has been declared to have the best average Internet speed in India. Earlier this year, Reliance Jio started taking registrations for the highly anticipated Jio GigaFiber broadband service, but the service is yet to receive a wider public rollout in India. As per Netflix ISP Speed Index for October 2018, Jio GigaFiber’s average monthly speed increased from 3.41Mbps to 3.48Mbps. Interestingly, the Internet service provider had debuted at the top of the list in September this year.

While Jio, a new entrant in the sector, continues to maintain its position as the top telco in India in terms of affordability of data consumption, incumbents have been coming up with plans and offers to match Jio’s prices and bundled data. However, Jio GigaFiber is yet to see a wider rollout but is expected to be available across the country soon. Netflix’s ISP Leaderboard shows that Jio GigaFiber continues to stay on top for two months in a row, while Airtel managed to receive the fourth position.

Meanwhile, 7 Star Digital has been positioned at the second spot in Netflix’s ISP Speed Index for October 2018. Its monthly average speed increased from 3.15Mbps to 3.19Mbps. In October, 7 Star Digital managed to topple Spectranet, which is now at the third place in India. At the fifth position in the list released by Netflix, is ATRIA Convergence Technologies.

Spectranet, Airtel, and ATRIA Convergence managed to deliver monthly average speeds of 3.14Mbps, 3.10Mbps, and 2.89Mbps respectively during October. Further, the top 15 was rounded off by YOU Broadband, Hathway, Syscon Infoway, D-VoiS, Excitel Broadband, Alliance Broadband, Tikona, BSNL, MTNL, and Tata Communications.

It is worth noting that India does not even feature in Netflix’s list of top 10 internet providers in the Asia-Pacific region. In this list, Hong Kong is at the top with a monthly average speed of 3.85Mbps while India has a monthly average speed of 2.73Mbps. Globally, Switzerland has the highest average speed, that is 4.18Mbps.

“The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of prime time Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network. Faster Netflix performance generally means better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions,” Netflix noted in its blog.

Dual-SIM on iPhone XS and iPhone XR: Here’s How to Set It Up on Jio

Dual-SIM on iPhone XS and iPhone XR: Here's How to Set It Up on Jio

iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR come with support for one physical SIM card and one eSIM

Apple at its event in September announced that the iPhone XS, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max would be its first smartphones to get dual-SIM support, with one physical SIM card and another eSIM. China, however, gets two physical SIM slots due to country specific restrictions. The Cupertino giant has now rolled out dual-SIM support for the newer iPhone models and they can now be used with eSIM from Indian cellular operators including Airtel and Reliance Jio. Here’s a step-by-step process on getting the Jio eSIM to work on your iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR, as detailed to Gadgets 360 by Jio.

How to set up dual-SIM with eSIM on Reliance Jio’s network
Whether you are an existing or a new Jio user, you will have to visit an offline Reliance Jio store to acquire an eSIM.

Existing users can take their physical Jio SIM card to the Jio store for an eSIM. You will be asked to fill a CAF (Customer Acquisition Form). The CAF details will be entered into a POS (Point Of Sale) machine and the SIM swap option will be chosen. Once done, the machine will generate a barcode and miscellaneous SIM details. This barcode is then scanned using the Cellular option in Settings on the concerned iPhone.

Scanning this barcode creates an eSIM profile on the user’s iPhone, which is similar to the virtual process of installing a physical SIM card. The CAF then goes through the standard verification and validation process. Once completed, the eSIM gets activated and the existing physical SIM card is deactivated.

New eSIM users on Reliance Jio’s network can also apply for an eSIM in a similar manner. Go to your nearest Reliance Jio store and fill up the CAF. CAF details are then entered on the POS machine where the relevant prepaid pack or postpaid plan is chosen. A barcode will be generated which is then scanned on the eligible iPhone model. Once done, an eSIM profile is created on the phone. Verification and validation follows, and the eSIM becomes active once the user is validated on the operator’s network.

Net profit for Q2 2018-19 stood at Rs. 681 crore, Jio added. The company also announced it has picked up a majority stake in Hathway and Datacom to aid Jio GigaFiber rollout.

Reliance Jio said that as of September 30, it has 252.3 million subscribers in the country, with an average revenue per user of Rs. 131.7 during the quarter. Jio added that its subscribers consume 11GB of data per month on average and that the number is “growing rapidly”. Average voice consumption stood at 761 minutes per user per month, Jio said. Reliance Jio also claims to have the “lowest churn” in the industry at 0.66 percent per month.

“Jio was conceived with a mission to connect everyone and everything, everywhere — always at the highest quality and the most affordable price,” Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited said in a statement. “We, at Jio, are glad with our progress towards our mission with more than 250 million subscribers on our network within 25 months of commencement of services.”

Video consumption increased to 410 crore hours per month on the network with average video consumption of 17.5 hours per subscriber per month, Jio added.

In terms of Jio GigaFiber broadband services, the company said it has received “strong interest” from customers across 1,100+ cities since registrations began on August 15. “Homes are being connected on priority based on the number of requests received in the area,” the company added. “Our next generation FTTH and enterprise services are now being made available to our customers to further enhance our value proposition to our customers,” Mukesh Ambani said.

Jio parent Reliance Industries also announced strategic investments in Den Networks Limited as well as Hathway Cable and Datacom Limited. Additionally, the company has picked up a 51.3 percent stake in Hathway Cable and Datacom Limited with a primary investment of Rs. 2,940 crore through a preferential issue. Both transactions are subject to customary regulatory approvals, the company added.

These investments will allow Jio to give Jio GigaFiber rollout a boost. Jio said it “will work together with Hathway and DEN and all the LCOs to offer a quick and affordable upgrade to a world-class line-up of Jio GigaFiber and Jio Smart-Home Solutions to the 24 million existing cable connected homes of these companies across 750 cities.”

Further, BSNL has launched its new high-value recharge options with a validity of 90 days. The Rs. 1,801 recharge in the new range comes with a talk time of Rs. 2,125 and 15GB data. Jio TV to Stream All Televised India Cricket Matches Free for 5 Years

Jio TV to Stream All Televised India Cricket Matches Free for 5 Years

The Jio TV app is available for Android and iOS

The Jio TV app will let subscribers of the telecom operator stream all televised India cricket matches for the next 5 years as part of a deal it has signed with broadcaster Star India. As per the new deal, Jio TV users get the option to stream T20, One Day Internationals, test matches, and domestic BCCI tournaments on the app. Of course, the matches will be streamed on Hotstar — the video streaming app owned by Star India — as well. Airtel TV also streams select cricket matches of the Indian cricket team on its app. Jio in a statement to the media said this is the first time ever that cricket production, a streaming platform, and a high-speed data network have come together to “deliver the best of cricketing content with connectivity to benefit the Indian consumers.”

To watch cricket matches on the Jio TV app, users must have an active Jio number. There are no additional charges to pay in order to access the live match stream as the app is part of the suite of free content apps that the operator provides to all Prime customers. The app is available for Android and iOS. The operator has a 4G-only network and became the second-largest standalone operator in the country this July after it gained more than 11 million new users in a single month, leapfrogging Vodafone and Idea, as per TRAI data. Of course, the joint Vodafone Idea Limited entity still dwarves it in terms of user base.

About the Jio-Star partnership, Akash Ambani, Director, Jio said, “Every Indian must have access to the best sporting events as well as quality and affordable bandwidth to consume the content. With this partnership, we intend to address both these objectives of providing the best sporting content with the best digital infrastructure to the Jio users.”

“Over the last five years, we have re-invented the sports experience in India across screens, both television and digital. And, with a new partner in Reliance Jio, we will have even more opportunities to raise the bar for cricket fans,” said Sanjay Gupta, Managing Director, Star India.

Jio GigaGiber Launch: Vodafone's You BroadBand Offers 4 Months Free Subscription to Existing Users

You Broadband has announced a free subscription benefit for existing users

To take on Jio GigaFiber, Vodafone owned You Broadband has announced up to four months of free subscription to existing users. The company has announced that all users who upgrade their validity till 12 months will get four months extra; effectively letting the subscriber use the broadband connection for 16 months, at an annual price plan rate. The company has also given benefits to existing users upgrading their validity to a quarterly or half yearly basis. This offer is valid only till September 30.

As per the company, these free months will be offered if the recharge is done through the official website exclusively. You Broadband notes that if the current user is on a one-month validity plan, they can upgrade to a three-month plan and get one month subscription free, or upgrade to a six month plan and get two months subscription free, or upgrade to a twelve month plan and get four months subscription free. A user who is currently on the quarterly plan, can only upgrade to six month and twelve month validity plan and avail two or four months subscription free, respectively. Similarly, a user who currently enjoys the half year validity can only upgrade to the twelve month validity plan and avail four months subscription free.

As mentioned, this plan will expire on September 30, and to get the offer resources, a subscriber needs to apply the promo code UPGRADE33 during checkout. This offer is for existing users, presumably to keep them from switching to other lucrative broadband companies, particularly after Jio GigaFiber registrations went live last month. BSNL has also been refreshing its broadband plans with more benefits in the wake of new competition in this space.
