India To Soon Get Its Own Standard Of Apparel Size: Smriti Irani

Gandhinagar:

Union minister Smriti Irani on Sunday said Indian textiles and garments industry would soon get its own country-specific apparel size.

Addressing the ‘Textile Conclave’ at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, Ms Irani said a study will be carried out before introducing the ‘Size India’ project for apparel measurement.

“In the apparel export segment, one of the biggest challenge is that the UK has its size, the US has its size, and Europe has its size of measurement. But, India does not have it (size of apparels, such as 42, 44 and XL),” she said.

“I hereby present the central government’s resolve that ‘Size India’ project will soon be rolled out for the entire country, the first-of-its-kind project in the Indian history,” she said, adding that a study will be undertaken for the project.

Ms Irani said the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has alloted over Rs 1,800 crore in the last 4.5 years to Gujarat for upgradation of technology in the textile sector.

“Following this allocation, new investment of Rs 30,000 crore came in the state’s textile industry,” she said.

The minister also announced to carry out a study to gauge the domestic demand of the textiles market.

“Our country has a capacity to cater to huge demands, both domestic and overseas. But, never before in the history of our country was a study done to ascertain the strength and the magnitude of our domestic market,” she said.

Ms Irani said the Centre will soon embark upon a statistical study to actually categorise the domestic demand of the market “so that it becomes a base for the creation and strengthening of the industry”.

Congress Standing With Those Who Raise Anti-India slogans: Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani said the BJP is committed to make India a strong and resurgent nation (File)

New Delhi:

The BJP is committed to make India a strong and resurgent nation while the Congress is standing with those who raise anti-India slogans, Union Minister Smriti Irani said on Friday.

She further attacked the Congress, saying one of its senior leaders had advocated repealing the law that defined sedition.

“While on one side BJP is committed to make India a strong and resurgent nation, on the other side the Congress is standing with those who raise the slogans like ”Bharat Tere Tukde Honge” (India will disintegrate),” Ms  Irani said at a press conference.

Slogans against India were allegedly raised during a procession in JNU in February 2016. The Delhi police earlier this week filed a chargesheet in the case.

Twitter Pans Cake Loot On Mayawati’s Birthday, Smriti Irani Rubs It In

“Cake loot”: The chaotic scenes had made headlines. It was also panned on social media

New Delhi:

Unforgettable visuals of hordes of people fighting each other for mounds of cake on Mayawati’s birthday – dubbed ‘cake loot’ by the social media – has drawn jeers from union minister Smriti Irani. In a tweet today, Ms Irani said: “Look at the antics of the mahagathbandhan, they are busy looting birthday cake”.

The tweet carried a television clip that showed the “cake loot” across Uttar Pradesh.

In Amroha, Meerut, Hapur and other cities, crowds were seen falling on enormous, multi-tiered cakes, scooping up huge chunks with bare hands. The area resembled a battlefield, and the cakes were gone in moments. Some made off with their loot. Others tried to stuff handfuls of cake into their mouth. Faces and clothes smeared in gooey icing were everywhere.

The chaotic scenes had made headlines. It was also hugely panned on social media.

On Saturday, Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav had announced their Grand Alliance in the state that’s meant to take on the BJP in the coming national elections. Both leaders claimed the news was giving “sleepless nights” to the BJP.

Out of power since 2012, Mayawati’s party had been all but wiped out in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In the 2017 assembly elections in the state, the party had won only 19 seats, down from 80. But the victory of the alliance in the by-elections for the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats last year is seen as a mark of its resurgence.

That, added to the announcement of alliance, has put fresh heart in the party and added an extra sheen to the Dalit leader’s birthday celebrations. In some places, local leaders of the party had even hired dancers for stage performances — another decision that did not go down well with the social media.

While she was in power, Mayawati’s birthday was celebrated grandly, if in a more traditional manner. Lucknow was festooned in blue fairy lights, Posters, hoardings and papier mache blue elephants lined the roads. The leader was photographed smiling in enormous garlands, and was weighed against laddoos.

Smriti Irani Takes Holy Dip In Ganga In Prayagraj, Tweets Picture

New Delhi:

Union minister Smriti Irani took a holy dip in the river Ganges as Kumbh Mela began today with a Shahi Snan at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. Smriti Irani also tweeted a picture of her holy dip, with the caption “Har Har Gange“.

She was among lakhs of pilgrims who gathered at the crack of dawn at the sacred Sangam for a ritual dip in the sacred rivers marking the beginning of the Kumbh Mela. The Sangam is the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj.

The Sangam is considered especially holy and Hindus believe bathing there during the Kumbh helps cleanse sins and brings salvation. Seas of pilgrims have set up camps or akhadas on the river banks.

Makar Sankranti, which marks the beginning of the festival, is one of the sacred bathing days of the event.

Each year, devotees brave the cold weather to take a dip in the icy water as early as 4 in the morning.

About 12 crore people are expected to visit the Kumbh between now and Maha Shivratri on March 4, when the Mela will come to a close, for a holy dip at the Sangam.

It was traditionally called ”Ardh Kumbh” as it takes place twice in 12 years, but the present Uttar Pradesh government recently renamed it ”Kumbh”.

Rahul Gandhi Said To PM Modi Be A Man. BJP, Smriti Irani, Sushma Swaraj Responds With Misogynist Rahul

Several BJP leaders have reacted sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s comments.

New Delhi:

Rahul Gandhi has provoked criticism with his sexist comments on Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Rafale deal. The comments mark a “new low”, said Union Minister Sushma Swaraj. Another minister, Smriti Irani, tweeted with the hashtag #MisogynistRahul.

At a rally in Rajasthan on Wednesday, the Congress chief had mocked PM Modi saying he had a “mahila (woman)” defend him in the Rafale debate in parliament.

“The watchman with a 56-inch chest ran away and told a woman, Sitharaman ji, defend me. I won’t be able to defend myself, defend me. For two and a half hours, the woman could not defend him. I had asked a straight question – answer yes or no – but she couldn’t answer,” said Mr Gandhi, using the word ‘mahila‘ several times.

PM Modi accused Rahul Gandhi of insulting “India’s first woman defence minister”.

“For the first time, a daughter of the county has become defence minister. It is a matter of pride. Our defence minister silenced all the opposition parties in parliament (on Rafale) and exposed their lies. They were so stunned that now they are insulting a woman defence minister. They are insulting India’s women power,” PM Modi said at a rally in Agra.

Later in the evening, Mr Gandhi tweeted a response that was sexist too.  “Stop shaking, Be a man,” he tweeted.

Several BJP leaders have reacted sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s comments.

Ms Sitharaman had in parliament responded to Mr Gandhi’s allegations that PM Modi signed an overpriced deal for 36 Rafale jets to help industrialist Anil Ambani, whose inexperienced defence firm won an offset contract with Rafale-maker Dassault.

Mr Gandhi kept accusing the prime minister of avoiding the debate and leaving the minister to defend him.

Smriti Irani On Dig At PM

Rahul Gandhi in a tweet on Saturday had attacked PM. (File)

New Delhi:

Hitting back at Rahul Gandhi for his “incompetent” barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP said Sunday it was ridiculous for an “incompetent” person like him to give a certificate of competence to others.

The party claimed that the Congress president had achieved everything in life due to his family not because of competence.

In a scathing attack at Mr Gandhi, BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani also accused him of “hurting” parliament’s and a woman minister’s (Nirmala Sitharaman) dignity by “winking” in the Lok Sabha as the defence minister replied to the Rafale debate on Friday.

“We do not expect values from him but we do hope that he maintains the dignity of parliament,” Ms Irani told a press conference.

She was responding to questions about Mr Gandhi’s claim in a tweet on Sunday that Ms Sitharaman had “lied” in her reply and also about his another tweet, alleging that PM Modi is an “incompetent man”.

Taking a dig at the Congress president, Ms Irani said he has woken up after 48 hours and was so much hurt by the “truth” that he came up again with a “pack of lies”.

“I believe that while the defence minister presented all facts before Parliament, the Congress president hurt Parliament”s dignity and a woman minister’s dignity with his wink,” she said.

Responding to the Mr Gandhi’s incompetent barb, she said wryly, “The country has not fallen upon such bad days that a person who has achieved everything in his life not due to his competence but family, give certificates of competence… This is itself ridiculous that an incompetent person like Rahul Gandhi give a certificate of competence to anybody.”

No opposition party accepts Mr Gandhi’s leadership, she said.

Rahul Gandhi had Saturday hit out at Modi over demonetisation, farm distress and job losses, alleging the PM was an “incompetent man who listens to nobody”.

Citing some news reports, he Sunday targeted Ms Sitharaman, saying in her eagerness to defend the PM’s “Rafale lie”, she lied to parliament.

Ms Irani had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election against Gandhi in Amethi and lost.

The BJP, it is understood, may field her again in 2019 from the Gandhi family”s pocket borough.

The Union minister on Sunday maintained that only the party leadership can take a decision in this regard.

Ms Irani also took a jibe at Congress leader Shashi Tharoor over his criticism of PM Modi, saying he has found that the only way by which he can make a headline is by talking about the prime minister.

He has written a book on the prime minister, and its sell will increase when he targets PM Modi, she said.

The BJP leader also spoke about the ED seeking a not-bailable warrant against a personal aide of Mr Gandhi’s brother-in-law Rober Vadra.

She said Mr Vadra’s aide had not joined the ED”s probe despite being summoned thrice.

Mr Gandhi should ask his brother-in-law to tell his aide to join the probe, she said, raking up Vadra”s links with defence dealer Sanjay Bhandari and his alleged ownership of a house in London.

Ms Irani described Mr Vadra as the “national son-in-law of the Congress”.

Smriti Irani Aims A Kamal Nath Barb At Rahul Gandhi During Amethi Visit

Smriti Irani hopes to win Amethi in the next Lok Sabha election.

New Delhi:

Union Minister Smriti Irani today questioned Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s silence on Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath’s recent declaration that the local population will be prioritised over migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for jobs in state industries.

“Why was Rahul silent when Kamal Nath spoke against people from UP and Bihar working in that state? How will he look into the eyes of Amethi residents now?” she said at a meet held in Amethi, which happens to be Mr Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency.

Soon after being sworn in as the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr Nath had announced a new state policy under which industries availing investment incentives will need to give 70% employment to the local youth. “People from other states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and come to work in a lot of industries set up here. I do not want to criticise them, but the youth of Madhya Pradesh are deprived (of jobs),” he had said.

Although the Congress president was expected to visit Amethi today, he postponed it by a few weeks. “My two-day trip to Amethi that had to begin from today has been postponed to January 22-23. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused by this delay,” he said in a Facebook post. He was in the Lok Sabha until evening, debating the Rafale fighter jet deal with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Ms Irani also accused the Congress of creating hurdles in the legal battle for the Ram temple during her daylong visit to Amethi. “The Congress should not do politics through its lawyers on the Ram temple issue, which is matter of faith for the people. Its leaders, as lawyers, are creating hurdles in court. Ram Bhakts should ask the party whether its leader wore the janeu (sacred thread) only for the polls to three states,” she said.

She also targeted Mr Gandhi for postponing his visit, remarking that anybody who doesn’t visit his constituency on time cannot be expected to give timely solutions to people’s problems.

Although the Union Minister was defeated by Mr Gandhi in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, she kept visiting the constituency in an effort to cultivate votes for the next contest. Today, she even arranged for a superfast train — the Pratapgarh-Bhopal Express — to stop at a station located 31 km from Amethi.

Gandhi Family’s Historical Relations To Christian Michel’s Established: Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani said historical relations between the Michel and Gandhi family have been established

New Delhi:

The BJP on Tuesday alleged that the Gandhi family had “historical” relations with the family of British National Christian James Michel, reportedly a middleman in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case, which it said has been established.

“The very fact that the Congress dispatches its own lawyers to help Michel shows that the Congress is extremely perturbed that the truth will come to light,” she told reporters at the party headquarters.

She said the matter is sub-judice, and as a Cabinet Minister she does not want to express her personal feelings about it.

“But one can only say that historical relations between the Michel family and the Gandhi family are established and the rest is left for the investigative agencies and the court of law,” she said.

Asked about Michel allegedly passing a slip to his lawyers with questions relating to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Ms Irani said, “It should be put to those who became restless (about his interrogation).”

“Neither am I an Italian nor do I have any son whose name starts with R,” she said.

Asked about the Gujarat government’s notification directing students to answer roll calls with ‘Jai Hind’ or ‘Jai Bharat’ instead of the current ‘yes sir’ and ‘present sir’ from January 1, Ms Irani said, “If the opposition contention is by saying Jai Hind, you are being regressive, then I would rather embrace my nation and celebrate its prominence and say Jai Hind prominently and proudly.”

“The fact that the opposition finds it ridiculous to hail your country just shows their mentality and not that of the Gujarat government,” the BJP leader added.
