Richard Madley Recalls His IPL Career Highlight And It Involves MS Dhoni


Richard Madley was the auctioneer for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 10 years. However, the Welshman Madley was “dropped” from the forthcoming IPL auction by the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) which is slated to take place on December 18 in Jaipur. Madley recently tweeted that he has not been invited to auction the IPL this year and it was not his decision. He also said that in cricketing terms he was dropped. As soon as he made the announcement of Twitter fans from all over India replied him to say that they will miss him.

One of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans also took the chance to ask Madley about his favourite moment from the lucrative IPL.

Madley to this replied that selling former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the inaugural edition of the league was his career highlight.

For the upcoming IPL auctions, flamboyant Australian batsmen Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch had opted out, largely owing to Australia’s hectic schedule in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup, according to reports by ESPNcricinfo.

Among the Indians, Yuvraj Singh – after a dismal IPL 2018 – will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1 crore. And Mohammad Shami, Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha – who has been out of the Indian team due to a streak of injuries – also enter the auction with a Rs 1 crore base price.

Another Indian cricketer who deserves notable mention is Jaydev Unadkat, who will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore. Unadkat was surprisingly the most expensive Indian in last year’s IPL, having been bought for Rs 11.5 crore by the Rajasthan Royals.

Biplab Deb’s Latest Nugget Involves Ducks And Rural Economy. Go Figure

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has contributed another gem to his growing list of quotable quotes. Today, he said oxygen levels  ‘automatically’ rise in water bodies if ducks swim in them. He also said he wanted to distribute ducks among villagers in his state because they would boost the rural economy.

Flagging off a boat race in his state, the chief minister said ducks recycled water and raised the oxygen levels in water with their swimming.

“When ducks swim in water, oxygen level automatically increases. It (oxygen) gets recycled. Fish in the water will get more oxygen. They also benefit from the bird droppings. Thus, pisciculture will benefit and fishes will grow faster, that too in a completely organic way,” Biplab Deb said.

He also believed every family must rear four to five ducks. He told the gathering that he had planned to distribute 50,000 ducklings to fishermen who lived near the lake. White ducklings, he added, would enhance natural beauty and boost the rural economy.

Mr Deb claimed the rearing of ducks and poultry is tradition that was ruined in the 25-year Left rule.

He urged fishermen to rear white ducklings at the Rudrasagar lake.

Biplab Deb has, since he came to power in Tripura March after the BJP’s phenomenal victory over the Left, often been an embarrassment for his party with his unfiltered comments.

One of his earliest bloopers was a claim that ancient Indians had access to the internet and artificial satellites in the age of the Mahabharata.

He also declared former Miss World Diana Hayden “unworthy” of being a beauty pageant winner.

Men’s Attraction To Luxury Brands Involves Testosterone: Study

A single dose of testosterone steers men towards luxury brands of cars, watches, pens, or clothes which, like stag anglers and peacock tails, signal “status” to the female gender, scientists said Tuesday.

The sex hormone, it turns out, is a major influencer of male consumer behaviour, according to a study published in the journal Nature Communications.

“This is likely because testosterone plays a role in behaviours that relate to social rank (in animals), and owning status products is a strategy to signal one’s rank within human social hierarchies,” study co-author Gideon Nave of the University of Pennsylvania told AFP.

Studies have already established that humans use consumer goods to exhibit social status. But the role of hormones was unknown.

Nave and a team recruited 243 men aged 18 to 55 for a trial. Some were given a dose of testosterone, applied to the skin in gel form, while others received a placebo or “dummy” dose.

They were then asked to choose between two products — of similar quality but one boasting a trademark considered high status — a judgement determined in a previous survey of over 600 men.

“We found that the men who received testosterone showed greater preference towards the high status brands,” said Nave.

The effect, he added, “is akin to behaviour of non-human animals, where testosterone typically rises during the breeding season and promotes the display of traits that signal the organism’s fitness to potential competitors and mates,” he added.

Do the findings imply that women have a preference for men who drive a Ferrari or wear a Rolex?

“The use of brands to signal status does not necessarily have to ‘work’, it’s enough that the men believe that it works,” said Nave.

The team noted that the products associated with status would differ between cultures.
