“You Inspire Me”: Serena Williams’ Beautiful Tribute To Working Parents

Serena Williams posted an inspirational New Year message to mothers and fathers juggling parenthood with work, saying “you inspire me”. The 37-year-old posted a picture of herself for her 10.4 million followers on Instagram, holding her child as she stretched her leg. “It’s not about what we can do it’s what we MUST do as working moms and working dads,” Serena wrote.

“Anything is possible. I was getting ready for the first match of the year and my dear sweet baby @olympiaohanian was tired and sad and simply needed mama’s love.

“So if it means warming up and stretching while holding my baby that’s what #thismama will do.

“My fellow moms and dads working – or stay home it’s equally as intense – but you inspire me,” she added.

“Hearing your stories makes me know I can do this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This year is to you!”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion began 2019 in Perth at the mixed teams Hopman Cup, with baby Alexis Olympia in tow.

The last time Williams played in Australia was January 2017, when she won the Australian Open when eight-weeks pregnant.

Last month, the WTA introduced new rules so returning mothers have a special ranking that earns them a seeded position at tournaments, ensuring they do not face a top player in the opening round.

Williams, along with other tennis mums like former world number one Victoria Azarenka, had advocated for the changes to help ease the transition back for players who had given birth.

She is partnering Francis Tiafoe for the United States at the Hopman Cup and on Tuesday evening played mixed doubles against Switzerland, with Roger Federer on the other side of the net.

The Swiss team won with Williams calling it “literally the match of my career”.

“It is really great and special to go against the greatest of all time,” she said of facing Federer in a competitive match.

France’s “Yellow Vest” Protests Inspire Copycats, Spark Fakes Abroad

“Yellow Vest” protest has turned into a grassroot protest against high cost of living and the government

The “yellow vest” revolt in France over the high cost of living has sparked copycat protests abroad — as well a swarm of fake reports.

AFP’s fact-checking service sorts the real from the imagined:

Copycat protests

The month-long French demonstrations, which have led to repeated rioting in Paris, have inspired protesters in a number of mostly European countries.

On December 8, some 400 people were detained in Brussels after protesters wearing high-visibility fluorescent vests briefly clashed with police.

Others reportedly blocked a highway linking Brussels to the town of Rekkem in Flanders, near the French border to protest high taxes.

On the same day in the Netherlands, “yellow vests” turned out in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague to protest the high cost of living, but they were few in number and the demonstrations were peaceful.

In Hungary, some of those protesting a new law, which increases the amount of overtime employers can require of workers, also dressed up in yellow vests on December 12 outside parliament.

And in Poland, farmers wearing the distinctive jackets on Wednesday blocked a motorway to demand government compensation for a swine flu outbreak.

In Germany, both Alice Weidel, one of the founders of the right-wing Alternative for Germany party, and the radical left-wing Die Linke party have expressed support for the French movement.

And some yellow vests were seen among a 1,000-strong crowd of right-wing demonstrators when the Pegida anti-migrant movement when it held a rally on December 1 in Berlin.

In Belgrade, a handful of opposition members of parliament also donned yellow on December 4 to protest petrol price increases.

In South Africa, where some protesters have been spotted wearing yellow vests during demonstrations against the low quality of public services, the Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) spoke out in favour of the French movement, saying it was a model for future protests.

The Yellow Vest protests have come to represent a deeply rooted social anger that has more to do with the personality of Emmanuel Macron than it does with any particular policy.

The French movement kicked off on November 17 over higher fuel taxes, but quickly morphed into a nationwide grassroot protest against the high cost of living and the government.

President Emmanuel Macron has since offered tax and wage concessions in a bid to end the protest.

Worried governments

In Egypt, authorities fearing possible protests on the anniversary of the uprising that toppled Egypt’s longtime president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, have sought to restrict the sale of yellow vests.

“We received instructions from the police around a week ago to sell yellow vests to companies only, and not to individuals,” one importer said.

And a human rights lawyer, Mohamed Ramadan, was remanded in custody earlier this month over charges including the distribution and possession of leaflets and yellow vests.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, defended the jailing of an elderly rights activist over calls to protest, stressing he wanted to prevent events like France’s “yellow vest” revolt.

Fake yellow news

But not every sighting of a high-visibility jacket should be seen as political.

Many social media accounts wrongly reported on Monday that German rail workers, who held a one-day strike for higher pay, wore yellow vests in solidarity with the French.

The vests are mandatory to ensure they are visible when on the railway tracks.

Other reports were pure fakes.

An internet platform, 24jours.com, published a photograph showing 300 motorcyclists in yellow vests purportedly demonstrating in the capital of the Central African Republic against “the French neo-colonial system” and against the local French-linked currency.

The picture was in fact taken in May when motorcyclists in Bangui attended a first aid training clinic.

Facebook Challenge By Netas Will Inspire Farmers, Says Goa Minister

Several decisions have been taken for the welfare of farmers in the last 4 years: Shripad Naik

Ministers stepping out into the fields and indulging in farming activities, thanks to a Facebook challenge which went viral, will inspire agricultural land holders to take up farming activity once again in Goa, Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Naik said today.

Mr Naik at a press conference held at the BJP state headquarters in Panaji, also expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s decision on Wednesday to increase the minimum support price (MSP) for kharif crops.

“It is a good thing that ministers are stepping out in the fields. Farmers will get inspired by this”, Mr Naik said, as a Facebook farming challenge has gone viral in the coastal state, with ministers as well as MLAs posing for the camera while ploughing, planting paddy saplings, and indulging in other farm activities.

“Everyone should step out in the field, not just ministers. Our health has deteriorated because we do not step into our farms. Body toxins are released through the sweat but now we do not indulge in such work. You go back 25 years in time, you will not see the diseases we face today. People would regularly work, even hospital OPDs were not overcrowded,” Mr Naik said.

Praising the Central government for raising the MSP on 14 kharif crops by an average of 50 per cent, Mr Naik who is a former Union Minister of State for Agriculture said: “The Prime Minister in the last election had promised to double the earnings of farmers by 2022. The increase in MSP is a step in that direction. Therefore the farmers in the country are happy. In the last four years, several decisions have been taken for the welfare of farmers.”

New Robotics Engineer Barbie Hopes To Inspire Young Scientists

The company has announced a “Career of the year” Barbie who just happens to be a robotics engineer

Los Angeles:

An inspirational new version of Barbie will encourage young girls to embark on careers in engineering and the sciences, the iconic doll’s manufacturer Mattel said on Tuesday.

Barbie, who first hit the shelves in 1959, prides herself on trying out jobs where women aren’t strongly represented, to add to her more traditional skill set of dancing with Ken and looking fabulous.

The company has announced a “Career of the year” Barbie who just happens to be a robotics engineer — a job that in real-life is occupied almost nine times out of ten by men.

Kids aren’t just supposed to play make-believe with the newest Barbie, however, as Mattel has partnered with games platform Tynker to provide owners with online coding experiences.

“For almost 60 years, Barbie has exposed girls to roles where women are underrepresented to show them that they can be anything,” Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s senior vice president for Barbie, said in statement.

“By playing with Robotics Engineer Barbie on and offline, we are giving girls a new platform for play in their imaginary world and teaching them important skills for their real world.”

The new doll joins a lineup of more than 200 careers held by Barbie, “all of which reinforce the brand’s purpose to inspire the limitless potential in every girl,” Mattel said in a statement.

Only 24 percent of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs in the United States are held by women.

Final Cut Pro X, Apple’s flagship software for desktop video editing, has received its latest software update on the Mac App store, as has the company’s audio creation software GarageBand on iOS and macOS. Final Cut Pro’s version 10.4.3 brings support for viewing and editing ProRes RAW files from the DJI Inspire 2, a fix for audio issue while importing Panasonic P2 video files, and fixes the task of deleting unused render files from a Compound clip in the browser. As for GarageBand, version 10.3 makes Artist Lessons free, adds new loops and sound effects, updates compatibility, and more.

As we mentioned, Apple has updated two of its major native apps to offer new features and certain bug fixes. Final Cut Pro X, currently priced at Rs. 24,900, has received a few minor upgrades. The video editing software will allow users to view and edit ProRes RAW files from DJI’s Inspire 2 drone with the DJI D-Log setting.

The version 10.4.3 update also fixes certain issues with the app. Now, deleting an unused render file from a Compound clip in the browser will work correctly. Another issue that caused certain Panasonic P2 video files to be imported with mixed-down audio channels has been rectified.

GarageBand, on the other hand, has a big overhaul in the form of version 10.3. Previously available at an in-app purchase of $4.99 (roughly Rs. 340) per lesson, Artist Lessons is now free for all users on the app. There are a total of eight offerings for piano and fifteen for guitar. The update also includes 1,000 new electronic and urban loops across genres like Reggaeton, Future Bass, and Chill Rap; 400 animal, machine, and voice sound effects; and 5 new Vintage Mellotron patches.

Users can play and record using Asian instruments like the Guzheng, Koto, and Taiko drums and updates compatibility with GarageBand for iOS. GarageBand 10.3 also brings stability improvements and bug fixes.

To Inspire Opposition Unity in 2019, Sharad Pawar Invokes Congress Defeat In 1977

Sharad Pawar cited the defeat of Congress in 1977 to a united opposition under Morarji Desai.

New Delhi:  Sharad Pawar, the chief of Nationalist Congress Party, today said the current political environment is similar to 1977, when a united opposition took on the might of a single party – the Congress. The 77-year-old veteran political leader is one of the key interlocutors between the opposition parties that are trying to come together to foil the BJP’s bid for a second term in power.

“In 1977, the downfall of one party started, and at one point, the government collapsed. A similar situation can be a possibility now if the opposition comes together,” Mr Pawar told reporters, without naming the Congress. After the nearly two-year-long emergency, the ruling Congress was trounced in the general election by the Morarji Desai-led coalition, which remained in power till 1980.

The NCP chief’s comments came days after a shot in the arm for the united opposition — the BJP’s defeat in the by-elections in Kairana, Uttar Pradesh.

Extending the formula that won the crucial by-polls of Gorakhpur and Phulpur — the constituencies of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Maurya — the Samajwadi Party,  Mayawati and the Congress had come together to support the candidate of Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal.

The victory had spinoffs in Noorpur, the assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which was won by the Samajwadi Party, and in Bihar, where Lalu Yadav’s RJD won the Jokihat assembly seat.
The idea of a united opposition received boost at the oath ceremony of HD Kumaraswamy last month, as leaders of more than a dozen opposition parties got together in a huge show of strength.

The Congress and the JDS had come together in Karnataka in a last minute twist to keep the BJP out of power. In an unexpected move, the national party had chosen to play second fiddle to the regional partner – holding out hope for a new power equation for regional parties.
