Pakistan’s Government Told To Release Indian Man Jailed By Military Court In Peshawar

Hamid Nihal Ansari was arrested reportedly from Pak in 2012 and accused of illegally entering the country

A top court in Pakistan on Thursday gave a one-month deadline to the federal government to complete formalities to deport Indian prisoner Hamid Nihal Ansari, whose three-year jail term will end on December 15.

Hamid Nihal Ansari, a 33-year-old Mumbai resident, is currently in Peshawar Central Jail after being sentenced by a military court to three years’ imprisonment for allegedly possessing a fake Pakistani identity card on December 15, 2015.

He was arrested reportedly from Pakistan in 2012 and accused of illegally entering the country from Afghanistan, to meet a girl he had befriended online.

A two-judge Peshawar High Court bench, comprising Justice Roohul Amin and Justice Qalandar Ali Khan, on Thursday heard an appeal filed by Hamid Ansari through a senior lawyer. The petition said that the federal government hasn’t taken any steps for his release.

Hamid Ansari’s lawyer, Qazi Muhammad Anwar, said that his client’s prison term will end on December 15 and he should be released on the morning of December 16.

Mr Anwar informed the bench that the sentence of the 33-year-old would complete after two days and both the Ministry of Interior (Pakistan) and authorities of the prison, where he was lodged, were completely silent about his release and deportation to India.

After hearing this, Justice Khan asked the Additional Attorney General to explain how would they keep the prisoner in jail after completion of his term.

“I wonder that after two days the jail term of the prisoner would be completed and the government did not complete requirements for releasing and deportation of the prisoner,” the judge observed after additional attorney general informed the court that documents for release and deportation of the prisoner were not ready.

An officer, representing Pakistan’s interior ministry, informed the court that a prisoner could be kept for one month while the legal documents were being prepared.

After knowing the legal position, the court directed the ministry to make all the arrangements within a month for releasing and deportation of Hamid Ansari.

Pakistan’s deputy attorney general recorded his statement on behalf of the interior ministry and said that Hamid Ansari would be handed over to Indian authorities at Wagah border after completion of his term.

Hamid Nihal Ansari had gone missing after he was arrested by Pakistani intelligence agencies in 2012.

Indian Techie In US Sentenced To 9 Years For Sexual Assault Inside Plane

Prabhu Ramamoorthy was convicted in August after a five-day trial.

An Indian techie from Tamil Nadu was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment on Thursday on charges of a “brazen sexual assault” against a fellow female passenger inside a commercial airplane early this year.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 35, who came to the US on a H-1B visa in 2015, will be deported after he serves his sentence, a federal court in Detroit said as it sentenced the Indian national to nine years of imprisonment.

Judge Terrence Berge hoped it would be grave enough to deter others from committing similar crimes. Federal prosecutors had sought 11 years of imprisonment for Ramamoorthy.

“Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on airplanes. We will not tolerate the behaviour of anyone, who takes advantage of victims who are in a vulnerable position. We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out,” US Attorney Matthew Schneider said after the sentencing was announced.

Ramamoorthy was convicted in August after a five-day trial that was conducted before United States District Judge Terrence Berg. The jury deliberated approximately three-and-a-half hours before returning the guilty verdict.

According to the evidence presented at the trial, on January 3, Ramamoorthy had engaged in a sexual act with a female, while she was sleeping on a flight from Las Vegas to Detroit. Ramamoorthy was seated along with his wife, when he sexually assaulted his co-passenger.

During the trial, the government admitted evidence demonstrating that Ramamoorthy had digitally penetrated the woman sleeping next to him during the overnight flight. The sexual assault woke her up, she found her pants unbuttoned and unzipped, and sought help from the flight attendants.

The sentence was proof that the safety and security of all aircraft passengers was a priority for the FBI, said Timothy R Slater, Special Agent in Charge, Detroit Division of the FBI.

In recent years, a number of Indian nationals have been arrested or charged with sexual assaults inside a plane. The FBI says airplane sexual assault is a serious offence that is on the rise. FBI statistics indicate that investigations of mid-air sexual assaults increased by 66 per cent from 2014 to 2017.

That was in part due to increasingly “cramped, confined spaces; alcohol and drugs; fewer flight attendants; and dark cabins on night flights” — factors that “likely embolden offenders” — the FBI said in a recent report.

The cramped style of airplane seating can exacerbate trauma for victims. According to mental health professionals, victims who are violated in confined spaces feel even more helpless, vulnerable and powerless. Victims may also feel intimidated by the person sitting next to them since the seating arrangement means that the perpetrator is effectively blocking the victim from getting up, according to the FBI.

According to court papers, Ramamoorthy is from Tamil Nadu, where he grew up. His parents are farmers. He came to the US in July, 2015 after his graduation to work as an IT professional.

During his trial, Ramamoorthy presented himself to the court as a confused man stranded in America without English language skills despite his sophisticated technological job, federal prosecutors alleged. “His lack of empathy and remorse should not go unnoticed by this court,” they argued, seeking nearly 11 years of imprisonment for him.

A 36-year-old Indian national was on Thursday sentenced to 12 weeks of jail (Representational)

A 36-year-old Indian national was on Thursday sentenced to 12 weeks of jail and banned from driving for five years for causing an accident that killed two electric bike riders and injured another in 2016, according to a media report.

The accident happened along the West Coast Highway when Sahadevan Senguttuvan, a trailer driver collided into three electric bike riders, killing two of them and injuring the third. He had pleaded guilty in the court, Channel News Asia reported.

The accused had worked for more than 12 hours, since 7.20 am, and he was driving his motor trailer towards Telok Bengale suburb estate when the tragedy struck on October 27, 2016, the report said quoting an investigations into the case.

The three victims – 25-year-old Ang Yee Fong, 18-year-old Ong Zi Quan and 17-year-old Marcus Loke Teck Soon were on their e-bikes in single file on the leftmost lane in front of the trailer.

The accused stopped his trailer and alighted, before calling for the ambulance and waiting for it to arrive, the report said, adding that Ang was pronounced dead at the scene and Zi Quan died soon after in hospital, while Marcus suffered abrasions, bruises and a fracture on his finger.

In the court, the prosecution asked for 12 weeks’ jail, while the defence asked for eight weeks instead.

The accused had said at a coroner’s inquiry last year that he panicked when he saw the e-bike riders, and made no attempt to brake before the collision.

“I tried my best. I didn’t want to hit them,” he said during the coroner’s inquiry.

Indian Super League: Tim Cahill, Farukh Choudhary Fire Jamshedpur Back Into Top-Four

The visitors’ desire to take an early lead denied Jamshedpur time and space on the pitch. In the 7th minute, Marcos Tebar played a delightful ball over the top for Lallianzuala Chhangte who beat Tiri for pace but hit the ball off target.

Delhi kept knocking on the doors and took the lead in the 24th minute. Narayan Das’ cross from the left flank was met by Mihelic inside the box who squared the ball for Chhangte. The pass took a deflection off Tiri and fell perfectly for Chhangte who slotted home.

Jamshedpur hit back with an equaliser five minutes later. Carlos Calvo took a short corner and exchanged passes with Memo before delivering into the box for Tim Cahill who headed into the net.

The hosts tried to put pressure on the Delhi defence after the break. In the 50th minute, Choudhary delivered a low cross from the right flank and with the defenders focused on Cahill’s movement inside the box, Mario Arques timed an excellent run towards the near post but failed to head the ball on target.

The creator then turned scorer in the 61st minute. Delhi failed to deal with a Carlos Calvo corner that caused panic inside the box. Marcos Tebar tried to head the air-borne ball clear but it fell to Choudhary who slammed a terrific strike into the top left corner of the net from the edge of the box.

In the 70th minute, Nandhakumar Sekar failed to get the better of Robin Gurung inside the box as the ball hit the full-back’s hand. The visitors’ appeals for a penalty were waved away as the loose ball fell to Andrija Kaludjerovic whose snapshot was kept out by Subrata Paul.

Kaludjerovic tried to single-handedly rescue a point for Delhi with a mazy run from the left flank. The striker skipped past a couple of challenges, entered the box and sent a forceful strike at Paul who parried the ball away and thereby, sealed a vital victory for Jamshedpur.

Pakistan Occupying Indian Territory In Kashmir, Says Sushma Swaraj In Parliament

Sushma Swaraj said Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of approximately 78,000 sq km of land (File)

New Delhi:

The government on Wednesday said India has repeatedly called upon Pakistan to immediately vacate all areas under its illegal occupation and it made this assertion to Islamabad last month as well.

Replying to a question in Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said India’s “consistent and principled” position is that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir has been, is, and shall be an integral part of India.

Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of approximately 78,000 sq km of Indian territory in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ms Swaraj said.

“Under the so-called ‘Boundary Agreement’ signed between China and Pakistan on March 2, 1963, Pakistan illegally ceded 5,180 sq km of Indian territory in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir to China,” she said in her written reply.

“We have repeatedly and consistently called upon Pakistan to immediately vacate all areas under its illegal occupation, most recently on November 30, 2018,” Ms Swaraj said, without elaborating on where the issue was raised with Pakistan.

Pakistan continues to be in illegal and forcible occupation of a part of Jammu and Kashmir, she asserted.

To another question in Lok Sabha on the number of incursions in Doklam during 2014-2018, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh said: “Doklam is part of the territory of Bhutan.”

Government regularly takes up any transgression along the Line of Actual Control with the Chinese side through established mechanisms as well as through diplomatic channels.

To a question on whether the Ministry of External Affairs or any other officials have any involvement or signed any agreement with the French government for the procurement of Rafale jets, Mr Singh said, “No”.

Indian Super League: Marcelinho, Marko Stankovic Strike As Pune City Beat Goa 2-0

Pune, meanwhile, have climbed to the seventh spot with their second consecutive win, and more importantly avenged their 2-4 hammering in Goa when interim coach Pradyum Reddy had just taken charge.

Goa dominated possession in the early stages of the game as Pune willingly dropped deep and set themselves up for quick counters. Hugo Boumous initiated a good move in the 12th minute as he picked out Seriton Fernandes’ run on the right flank.

The full-back returned the favour with a cross into the centre but Boumous, who got on the end of it, sent his effort wide.

Pune had an excellent chance to take the lead in the 17th minute when Iain Hume’s long diagonal over the top for Marcelinho caught Goa’s defence off-guard. Seriton tracked back and nicked the ball off the Brazilian with a last-ditch tackle.

With the match turning out to be an end-to-end affair, Goa threatened again in the 22nd minute. Edu Bedia’s lob allowed Brandon Fernandes to dribble into the box and force a good save from Kamaljit Singh.

With three minutes left for the end of the first half, Mandar Rao Dessai’s cut-back from the left found Ferran Corominas in the centre of the box and the forward laid the ball off for Edu to send a powerful effort that hit the crossbar.

Goa pulled the strings again after the break but Pune had no plans to sit back despite Goa’s dominance. In the 55th minute, Ashique Kuruniyan sneaked towards the byline and chipped a good cross for Nim Dorjee Tamang whose close-range header was parried away by Mohammad Nawaz.

Ahmed Jahouh took it upon himself to take the Pune defence out of the equation with a swerving strike from outside the box in the 70th minute but Kamaljit produced an exceptional save to tip the ball away.

A minute later, Mourtada Fall’s failure to clear the ball allowed Marcelinho to dribble into the box at the other end but the Brazilian forward’s shot was brilliantly saved by Nawaz.

The Brazilian worked his magic to give Pune the lead in the 74th minute. Sarthak Golui’s pass found Marcelinho in space outside the box and the latter unleashed a beautiful curling strike that kissed the back of the net.

Jahouh hit the post with a similarly outstanding effort at the other end two minutes later as Goa sought an equaliser.

Despite Goa pouring forward in attack, Pune held them off well and won a penalty late on when Marko Stankovic was held by Mohammed Ali. The midfielder stepped up and converted from 12 yards to seal a hard-fought victory for Pune City.

Indian Premier League 2019 Auction: Jaydev Unadkat Highest-Priced Indian With ₹ 1.5 Crore Base Price

The Indian Premier League fever has already set in with its 12th edition knocking on the door. And the Indian Premier League has released a list of 346 shortlisted cricketers — including 226 Indians – for the highly awaited auction to be held on December 18 in Jaipur. After emerging as the most expensive Indian from the IPL 2018 auction, Jaydev Unadkat has again grabbed the spotlight ahead of the 2019 edition.

Unadkat is the highest-priced Indian with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore. Among other Indians, Yuvraj Singh, Wriddhiman Saha, Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel have set a base price of Rs 1 crore for themselves.

According to several reports last week,  flamboyant Australian batsmen Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch have opted out of the auction, largely owing to Australia’s hectic schedule in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup.

There are no Indians with a base price of Rs 2 crore. Here are nine players in the two-crore base price: Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Colin Ingram, Brendon McCullum, Corey Anderson, Chris Woakes,    Samuel Curran, Shaun Marsh and D’Arcy Short.

Another development on the IPL auction front is that auctioneer Richard Madley has been “dropped” by the BCCI. Richard Madley was the auctioneer for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 10 years. The Welshman was “dropped” from the forthcoming IPL auction by the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI). Madley recently tweeted that he has not been invited to auction the IPL this year and it was not his decision.
