Centre Increased Excise Duty On Petrol, Diesel 12 Times, Says Congress

Twelve countries were importing petrol and diesel at cheaper rates from India, Congress said.

Ahmedabad/Rajkot:

Congress leaders Sunday urged the people of Gujarat to make Monday’s Bharat Bandh a success and accused the centre of revising excise duty on petrol and diesel twelve times leading to a sharp spike in their prices.

The BJP-led Union government pocketed Rs 11 lakh crore from the public by raising taxes on fuel and not including petrol and diesel under GST, Congress leaders Sushil Kumar Shinde, Rajiv Satav and Amit Chavda claimed in two separate press conferences in Rajkot and Ahmedabad.

Talking to reporters in Rajkot, former union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde slammed the NDA government over rise in fuel prices and blamed its “stubborn” stand for this.

“Fuel prices can be reduced if the government includes it under GST. The government has earned over Rs 11 lakh crore through taxation on fuel,” Mr Shinde said.

He said that twelve countries were importing petrol and diesel at cheaper rates from India, while people here were made to suffer due to constant price rise.

“The government has power to reduce prices. It appears the government lacks co-ordination with oil companies which has resulted in the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas on a daily basis,” Mr Shinde claimed.

Calling people in the state to join in large numbers to support the shutdown, Congress’ Gujarat in charge Rajiv Satav and state president Amit Chavda, in a joint press conference, said that despite a drop in international crude oil prices, the Narendra Modi government continued to impose excise duty leading to rise in their prices domestically.

“Since May 2014, excise duty on petrol has gone up by 211.7 per cent, on diesel by 443.06 per cent. Central excise duty was revised upwards 12 times,” Mr Satav said.

“Congress president Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly demanded that petrol and diesel be included in GST as this could reduce the price by Rs 10-15 per litre,” he said.

Mr Chavda asked party workers to ensure that the bandh remained peaceful while requesting all sections of society to support it.

He also urged small businessmen and shopkeepers to down shutters till 3 pm Monday to make the bandh a success.

Shahzaib Hasan’s Ban For Spot-Fixing Increased To 4 Years

An independent adjudicator Friday increased the ban on Pakistan’s World Twenty20-winning opener Shahzaib Hasan from one year to four on appeal from the country’s cricket board. Hasan, 28, was banned in February this year after being found guilty of not disclosing a fixing offer to the anti-corruption unit of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He was also fined one million rupees. The PCB had appealed the length of the ban, saying it was too lenient. “The independent adjudicator Justice (retired) Hamid Hussain has accepted (the) PCB’s appeal and lifted the ban to four years while upholding the fine,” the board’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi told media.

Spot-fixing refers to illegal activity in a sport where a specific part of a game is fixed, unlike match-fixing, where the whole result is fixed.

Shahzaib is one of six players sanctioned in the spot-fixing case which rocked the second edition of Pakistan Super League last year, a Twenty20 tournament.

Swashbuckling opener Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Nasir Jamshed were also given bans of varying lengths.

Jamshed is also charged with other breaches and faces a life ban, a decision likely to be announced next week.

Hasan’s lawyer Kashif Rajwana said his client is likely to challenge the decision in court.

Hasan played the last of his three one-day internationals in November 2010. He has also played 10 Twenty20 internationals for Pakistan, including the World Twenty20 which Pakistan won in 2009.

Hasan, like Jamshed, now lives in the UK.

Battlefield V for PS4 and Xbox One has seen a price increase in India. The game, much like everything else published by EA, is exclusive to Amazon India and sold by its official merchant partner, Cloudtail. Previously, Gadgets 360 reported that Battlefield V was available for pre-order for Rs. 3,999 on PS4 and Xbox One. Now, the game is Rs. 4,499 on both platforms. Incidentally, that’s the same price point Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 occupies at retail. The Battlefield series has a history of fluctuating prices pre-release. 2016’s Battlefield 1 was priced at Rs. 5,199 before the backlash resulted in it being priced at a somewhat more reasonable Rs. 4,299.

For its part, a spokesperson for Amazon India confirmed to Gadgets 360 over email that pricing decisions are taken independently by the seller. In this case, the seller is Cloudtail, formed from a joint venture between Amazon and Catamaran Advisors. Several emails and calls to Cloudtail remained unanswered at the time of publishing this story.

That said, multiple sources in the supply chain speaking to Gadgets 360 have observed this change in price to be a strange one. Reason being, price hikes, if at all, happen due to fluctuations in foreign currency. This year, this hasn’t been the case with console games in India. Several publishers have stuck to the accepted price range of Rs. 3,499 or Rs. 3,999. One possible reason for the hike in price, is to compete with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Traditionally, Call of Duty titles tend to have the highest price in the country.

“The price for games has remained stable through the year thanks to the relative stability of the Euro and the US Dollar. Perhaps its a placeholder to see how many would bite versus Black Ops 4,” a sub distributor told Gadgets 360. “Though I can’t fathom why EA doesn’t want the price advantage. Maybe it thinks it can win on content alone.”

Meanwhile, Battlefield V’s price on the PS Store and Microsoft Store has not changed. The Battlefield Standard Edition price is Rs. 3,500, while Battlefield V Deluxe Edition price is Rs. 4,800. These are prices for the digital variants of the game on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One. On PS4 the game costs Rs. 3,375 digitally with the Deluxe Edition costing Rs. 4,499. If you rather play it on PC, it’s available on EA’s Origin storefront with the Battlefield V Standard Edition costing Rs. 3,499 and the Deluxe Edition priced at Rs. 4,799.

Cases of Luggage loss increased in Domestic flights says DGCA
