Upendra Kushwaha Says RLSP Strength Has Increased, Demands More Than 3 Seats

Patna:

Claiming that the RLSP has gained significantly in strength in Bihar, Union minister Upendra Kushwaha Friday demanded that his party be allotted more than three seats in the state by the NDA to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

Bihar has 40 Lok Sabha seats. Mr Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samata Party had contested and won three seats in the 2014 general election.

“My party had contested three Lok Sabha seats in 2014 but now this party’s strength and base have increased… Our party should be given more than three seats after making a neutral assessment of its strength,” Mr Kushwaha told reporters at his party office in Patna.

Mr Kushwaha, the Union minister of state for human resource development, said there is little doubt the RLSP has gained strength but how much could be a matter of debate.

Replying to a query, Mr Kushwaha admitted that he had raised the demand for more number of seats with BJP general secretary and Bihar in-charge Bhupendra Yadav. If need be, he added, he would also speak to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter.

Mr Kushwaha said the seat-sharing issue between NDA partners in Bihar – BJP, JD(U), RLSP and LJP – has not been finalised, otherwise it would have been announced.

The BJP had won 22 seats in Bihar in the 2014 election, while Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP had contested seven seats and won six.

On October 26, BJP chief Amit Shah had announced that the BJP and the JD(U) would contest an equal number of seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election in Bihar.

Mr Kushwaha asserted his alliance with the BJP and LJP was intact but expressed displeasure over Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar’s statement apparently directed at him.

Mr Kushwaha said Mr Kumar should retract the statement or explain what he actually meant.

On the seat-sharing issue with particular reference to Mr Kushwaha’s RLSP, Mr Kumar had told a TV channel on November 3, “Do not take the debate to such a low level”.

Mr Kushwaha said he felt the remark was laden with casteist overtones.

“I am extremely hurt and pained by CM Nitish Kumar’s statement in which he referred to me as ‘neech’. The kind of language Kumar has used for me is intolerable. Nitish Kumar should withdraw his statement,” Mr Kushwaha said.

“I am being asked to make sacrifices for the new entrant JD(U) to the NDA fold, but RLSP was ignored when the benefits (in terms of ministerial berth in Nitish Cabinet) were to be distributed among the partners,” he said.

Centre Increased Excise Duty On Petrol, Diesel 12 Times, Says Congress

Twelve countries were importing petrol and diesel at cheaper rates from India, Congress said.

Ahmedabad/Rajkot:

Congress leaders Sunday urged the people of Gujarat to make Monday’s Bharat Bandh a success and accused the centre of revising excise duty on petrol and diesel twelve times leading to a sharp spike in their prices.

The BJP-led Union government pocketed Rs 11 lakh crore from the public by raising taxes on fuel and not including petrol and diesel under GST, Congress leaders Sushil Kumar Shinde, Rajiv Satav and Amit Chavda claimed in two separate press conferences in Rajkot and Ahmedabad.

Talking to reporters in Rajkot, former union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde slammed the NDA government over rise in fuel prices and blamed its “stubborn” stand for this.

“Fuel prices can be reduced if the government includes it under GST. The government has earned over Rs 11 lakh crore through taxation on fuel,” Mr Shinde said.

He said that twelve countries were importing petrol and diesel at cheaper rates from India, while people here were made to suffer due to constant price rise.

“The government has power to reduce prices. It appears the government lacks co-ordination with oil companies which has resulted in the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas on a daily basis,” Mr Shinde claimed.

Calling people in the state to join in large numbers to support the shutdown, Congress’ Gujarat in charge Rajiv Satav and state president Amit Chavda, in a joint press conference, said that despite a drop in international crude oil prices, the Narendra Modi government continued to impose excise duty leading to rise in their prices domestically.

“Since May 2014, excise duty on petrol has gone up by 211.7 per cent, on diesel by 443.06 per cent. Central excise duty was revised upwards 12 times,” Mr Satav said.

“Congress president Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly demanded that petrol and diesel be included in GST as this could reduce the price by Rs 10-15 per litre,” he said.

Mr Chavda asked party workers to ensure that the bandh remained peaceful while requesting all sections of society to support it.

He also urged small businessmen and shopkeepers to down shutters till 3 pm Monday to make the bandh a success.

Shahzaib Hasan’s Ban For Spot-Fixing Increased To 4 Years

An independent adjudicator Friday increased the ban on Pakistan’s World Twenty20-winning opener Shahzaib Hasan from one year to four on appeal from the country’s cricket board. Hasan, 28, was banned in February this year after being found guilty of not disclosing a fixing offer to the anti-corruption unit of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He was also fined one million rupees. The PCB had appealed the length of the ban, saying it was too lenient. “The independent adjudicator Justice (retired) Hamid Hussain has accepted (the) PCB’s appeal and lifted the ban to four years while upholding the fine,” the board’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi told media.

Spot-fixing refers to illegal activity in a sport where a specific part of a game is fixed, unlike match-fixing, where the whole result is fixed.

Shahzaib is one of six players sanctioned in the spot-fixing case which rocked the second edition of Pakistan Super League last year, a Twenty20 tournament.

Swashbuckling opener Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Nasir Jamshed were also given bans of varying lengths.

Jamshed is also charged with other breaches and faces a life ban, a decision likely to be announced next week.

Hasan’s lawyer Kashif Rajwana said his client is likely to challenge the decision in court.

Hasan played the last of his three one-day internationals in November 2010. He has also played 10 Twenty20 internationals for Pakistan, including the World Twenty20 which Pakistan won in 2009.

Hasan, like Jamshed, now lives in the UK.
