BSNL Broadband Unlimited Plans Updated to Offer Up to 6 Times More High-Speed Data

After revising its Rs. 299 broadband plan to offer more speed and data, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is now again revising a slew of its unlimited broadband plans to offer more data benefits. The company has also introduced daily FUP limits on these plans, which wasn’t the case earlier, but it has increased the data offering by up to six times. The revised BSNL unlimited broadband plans include Rs. 675, Rs. 845, Rs. 999, Rs. 1,199, Rs. 1,495, Rs. 1,745 and Rs. 2,295 plans, with the most premium plan offering up to 35GB of data per day.

The revised BSNL BBG Combo ULD 675 broadband plan offers 5GB data per day at 10Mbps speeds. Therefore, the plan now offers 150GB of data benefit per month, instead of the earlier prescribed 35GB data. Apart from the daily 5GB data, this plan also offers unlimited voice calling benefits (local +STD) on any network within India.

The BSNL BBG Combo ULD 845 broadband plan now offers 10GB of data per day at 10Mbps speeds, offering 300GB of data instead of 50GB that was offered earlier. Post FUP limit speed and unlimited voice calling facility is also offered with this plan. Similarly, there’s also the BSNL BBG Combo ULD 999 and Combo ULD 1199 broadband plans that now offer 15GB of data per day and 20GB of data per day respectively, at 10Mbps speeds.

The BBG Combo ULD 1495 broadband plan used to earlier offer 140GB data per month, but now it offers 25GB data per day (750GB data in total). And the most premium BSNL BBG Combo ULD 2295 broadband plan offers 35GB of data per day at 24Mbps speeds. Earlier, it used to offer a total of 200GB data at 24Mbps speeds.

Lastly, BSNL has also revised its BSNL BBG Combo 1745 VDSL broadband plan that now offers 30GB data per day at 16Mbps speeds. Earlier, this plan used to offer 140GB of data at 16Mbps speed, and 2Mbps after the FUP limit was crossed.

Tthe unlimited voice calling benefit and the 2Mbps speed downgrade after the FUP limit is crossed is valid across all plans. These BSNL broadband plans have been revised in all circles. All of the new plans can be viewed on the BSNL website.

As mentioned, the BSNL Rs. 299 broadband plan was recently also revised to offer 1.5GB of data per day at a download speed of up to 8Mbps. This brings a total data offering of 45GB for 30 days. Upon exceeding the limit, customers will get data access at up to 1Mbps speed. The broadband plan also gives unlimited local and STD voice calls within India on BSNL network only. For other networks in the country, the plan offers unlimited voice calls between 10:30pm to 6am and on Sundays. It also comes bundled with free voice calling benefits worth Rs. 300 on networks other than BSNL.

Elon Musk’s Firm To Open Hyperloop Test Tunnel For High-Speed Travel In December

Elon Musk has pledged to complete the Hyperloop test tunnel by the end of the year

Elon Musk tweeted on Sunday that his aspiring underground transportation project will open its first test tunnel in December, in Hawthorne, California.

If successful, the tunnel would demonstrate the viability of Musk’s plans to build a new type of high-speed public transportation system whose station elevators could be built into a city’s existing infrastructure.

Musk, a space entrepreneur and electric-car pioneer, has pledged to complete the test tunnel by the end of the year. Through his tunnel-digging firm, the Boring Co., Musk envisions the construction of a zero-emissions underground transit system that transports people using high-speed electric sleds. A bank of elevators would take pedestrians, cyclists or cars from street-level stations to underground tunnel stops.

Musk said on Twitter that the Boring Co. will hold an opening event to showcase the test tunnel on the night of Dec. 10. The company will then offer free rides to the public the next day, he said, allowing passengers to travel as fast as 155 mph. The Hawthorne-based test tunnel begins at a SpaceX parking lot and continues underground for up to two miles, the Boring Co. said.

Musk’s goal in designing an underground tunnel system is to “solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic,” the Boring Co. says on its website. By lowering the cost of building tunnels and providing a transit alternative to driving, the company would help alleviate city congestion and offer high-speed transportation options across the country. One of the proposed routes would take passengers from the District of Columbia to New York in under 30 minutes.

In addition to the testing tunnel and the East Coast route, the Boring Co. lists an underground tunnel project in Chicago.

While Musk is known for his towering ambition and zealous breakthroughs, the tech billionaire also has a reputation for over promising on meeting benchmarks. Dubbed “Elon time” critics of Musk have pointed to his history of missing deadlines or setting unrealistic timelines, most notably with the slow production of Tesla’s mass market Model 3.

“Dec 10 in real time or Elon time?” one Twitter user asked Musk about the test tunnel unveiling. “I think real,” Musk replied.

High-Speed Train Catches Fire In Germany, 510 Evacuated

None of the 510 passengers were injured in the fire.

A German high-speed train travelling from Cologne to Munich caught fire early on Friday, prompting the evacuation of all 510 passengers without injury before flames ripped through two carriages and burned them out.

Mass-selling daily Bild said a policeman travelling on the ICE train smelled smoke and activated the emergency braking system, “averting catastrophe”.

Operator Deutsche Bahn said it had closed the high-speed line between Cologne and Frankfurt as a result of the fire and would divert trains travelling that route, adding 80 minutes to the journey time.

Saudi Arabia King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud To Launch Haramain, High-Speed Rail Line For Mecca-Medina Today

King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud will inaugurate a high-speed rail line connecting Mecca, Medina

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud will officially inaugurate a high-speed rail line connecting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina on Tuesday.

The 450 km-long Haramain rail line will connect Mecca, Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport, King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh and Medina, reports Efe news.

Regular trains will start operating on the line from next month between the stations of Makkah Al Mukarramah, Madinah, Sulaymaniyah in Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City, while trains to Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport will begin around mid-2019.

The line is aimed at doubling the number of visitors and pilgrims to the holy cities and is in line with Saudi Arabia’s development plan, Vision 2030, to expand the economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

With a fleet of 35 trains carrying up to 417 people each, the service is expected to ferry around 60 million passengers yearly.

The distance between Mecca-Medina would be covered in less than two hours, which is less than half the time that it takes to cover the same distance by road.

A consortium comprising 12 Spanish firms along with two Saudi firms have been tasked with building the second phase of the project.

Hong Kong Launches High-Speed Rail Link To China Amid Controversy

Hong Kong, China:

A new high-speed rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China launched Sunday, a multi-billion-dollar project that critics say gives away part of the city’s territory to an increasingly assertive Beijing.

Chinese security have been stationed in semi-autonomous Hong Kong for the first time at the harbourfront West Kowloon rail terminus, as part of a new “special port area” that is subject to mainland law.

Despite critics’ fears over passenger safety in the mainland zones, hundreds gathered at the terminus, with the first train leaving for the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen at 7:00 am (2300 GMT Saturday).

“I’m not worried about the (mainland security) issue. They’re only here to work, the joint checkpoints are just to make things more convenient and make border-crossing clearance faster,” one 39-year-old passenger who gave his name as Mr Chan told AFP.

Travellers cross through immigration and customs into the mainland-controlled portion of the station, which includes the platforms and the trains, even though West Kowloon is miles from the border further north.

Under Hong Kong’s mini-constitution — the Basic Law — China’s national laws do not apply to the city apart from in limited areas, including defence.

Hong Kong also enjoys rights unseen on the mainland, including freedom of speech, protected by a deal made before the city was handed back to China by Britain in 1997. But there are growing fears those liberties are being eroded.

Officials argue joint checkpoints will make journeys easier as passengers need no further clearance after crossing into the mainland.

The bullet trains to southern China promise to be far quicker than existing cross-border rail links, and long-haul services will cut journey times to Beijing from 24 hours to nine hours.

“This is definitely convenient in terms of time,” said one passenger who gave his name as Mr Kwok and was taking a train to visit his ancestral home in the southern Chinese city of Chaozhou.

But he added that tickets were expensive and the purchasing system inefficient, having queued for four hours ahead of Sunday to buy them.

A second-class ticket to Shenzhen costs HK$86 ($11), while travelling to Guangzhou costs HK$247 and to Beijing HK$1,237.

‘Imperialist attitude’

Opponents warn that giving away control of land in the heart of Hong Kong is a dangerous precedent as Beijing seeks to tighten its grip on the city following mass pro-democracy protests in 2014 and the emergence of an independence movement.

“It’s almost like an imperialist attitude on the part of Beijing,” pro-democracy lawmaker Claudia Mo told AFP.

There are also questions over how Hong Kong citizens will be required to behave in the zones subject to Chinese law, whether they will be punished for using Facebook and Twitter — banned on the mainland — or targeted for wearing clothing with political slogans.

AFP journalists in the station Sunday could still access social media and websites, even when using a mainland Chinese WiFi provider.

On the train, passengers had to switch to a registered Chinese mobile number or WeChat account to access WiFi once they crossed into Shenzhen.

There are concerns too over the sharing of personal information with Chinese authorities.

However, pro-establishment lawmaker Regina Ip described the fears as “overblown”.

“(The rail link) provides unprecedented convenience of travel,” she said.

Travellers on the first service out of Hong Kong grappled with reversible seats that were pointing the wrong way, but the train left promptly, with doors closing at 6:59 am.

Mainland passengers arriving on early trains were greeted with “I love Hong Kong” mugs in goodie bags and signs welcoming them to the city.

One arrival who gave her name as Mrs. Tian, 64, said it was her first time in Hong Kong.

“It was too fast!” she said of the train, adding the journey had been “very comfortable”.

The special port area was quietly handed over to mainland personnel earlier in September.

The hush-hush ceremony took place at midnight and was not announced by the Hong Kong government until it was over. There was no media access.

On Camera, Las Vegas Cop Fires Through Windshield In High-Speed Car Chase

Department investigators are probing police use of force in the incident.

Los Angeles, United States:

Las Vegas police on Monday released dramatic body camera footage of an officer firing through his own windshield as he drove in a high speed shootout that left one homicide suspect dead.

The video clip of the incident shows the officer at the wheel grab his gun and pepper his windshield with bullets in a bid to stop the suspect driving ahead.

The chase and shootout, which occurred July 11, came after officers responded to an attempted murder call, police said.

Prior to spraying bullets through the car’s front window an officer is heard yelling “shots fired” into his radio.

During the pursuit the two suspects — Fidel Miranda, 23, and 30-year-old Rene Nunez — fired 34 shots at officers, according to Las Vegas’s assistant sheriff Tim Kelly, hitting several marked police vehicles.

Officers responded with 32 shots and ultimately surrounded the vehicle.

Miranda was declared dead at the scene while Nunez was taken into custody and treated for an apparent gunshot wound, according to police.

Department investigators are probing police use of force in the incident.

According to local media, Miranda and Nunez were suspected in the shooting of a 25-year-old who died at the hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

Las Vegas last October was the scene of the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history, after a gunman rained bullets from his hotel suite on a concert and killed 58 people.
