2018 Fiat Panda Hatchback Scores 0 Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Test

The 2018 Fiat Panda hatchback, one of the most popular offerings from the Italian automaker has scored a very low 0 star rating in the latest Euro NCAP crash tests.

While the 0 Star Car is still a sad reality in India as we have seen recently with the Renault Lodgy, Europe more often than not has cars that scores a higher 4 or 5 star safety rating across the board. Which is why a 0 Star rated car is most certainly something to report about, even though the car in question is not really relevant to India in general. The 2018 Fiat Panda, one of the most popular offerings from the Italian automaker and also it’s cheapest hatchback has scored a dismal 0 star rating in the recent set of tests conducted by the Euro NCAP. The score on the Fiat Panda is one of the lowest ever seen.

Unlike Global NCAP that tests cars that are made in India too, the Euro NCAP tests have far more parameters. The car goes through the usual frontal offset crash test as for the Indian cars but also has a side impact, a full frontal test and several pedestrian tests too. While the Panda’s compartment remained stable for the frontal offset test, the readings on the test dummy showcased weak chest compression. The test results also showcased that the knee and the femur protection was good but while subjected to a full frontal test, dummy readings indicated weak protection of the head and neck.

Commenting on the results, Michiel van Ratingen, General Secretary, Euro NCAP said, “It is truly disappointing to see a brand-new car being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance. It is high time we saw a product from the FIAT-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors.”

The Fiat Panda also scores really poorly in terms of children safety as tests for various ages showcased poor readings to the head and other parts of the body. Euro NCAP also tests car seats in specific for whiplash protection. Tests on the front seats and head restraints showcased marginal protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear end collision and the rear seats in particular indicated poor whiplash protection. The Panda also scored lower as it does not get any automated emergency braking systems or AED.

Tata 45X Premium Hatchback Spotted Testing Again

The new Tata 45X is seen with a bunch of production-ready parts, especially the LED taillamps, and the alloy wheels. The car will be launched in India sometime in 2019.

View Photos

The production model will be based on the Tata 45X concept shown at the Auto Expo 2018

Images of a prototype of Tata Motors’ upcoming premium hatchback, codenames 45X, have recently surfaced online. Expected to be launched sometime in 2019, the test mule was seen with a bunch of production-ready parts, especially the taillamps, which we were able to see in the earlier test mules. Sadly, the Tata 45X prototype is still heavily camouflaged, so there nothing new that we can comment on the design and styling of the car, but it does look like the car is shaping up to become more like the concept model we saw at the Auto Expo 2018.

The production model of Tata 45X will share many similarities with the concept car

The upcoming premium hatchback is based on Tata Motors‘ new Alpha platform and will also be the second model to employ the company’s new Impact Design 2.0 philosophy, after the Harrier. Based on the test mule images we have seen so far, the production model will retain few traits of the concept car like – the coupe-like sloping roofline and the sleek wraparound LED taillamps, and the sharp lines on the tailgate, which we get to see in these new images as well. Other design elements that are expected to be carried over from the concept car will include the single motion grille and headlamp cluster, the wide central airdam, the sweptback A-Pillar and the coupe-like roofline.

Tata 45X-based prototype comes with production-ready taillamps, ORVMs, and alloys

There are no updates on the cabin so far, but, based on what we saw on the Tata Harrier, it’s likely that the cabin will also be extensively similar to the concept car we saw early this year, but less dramatic. On features front we expect, a touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and MirrorLink, while safety features should include dual front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard.

Under the hood, the upcoming Tata 45X is expected to feature the tried and tested 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, the turbocharged 1.5-litre motor Revotorq oil burner. Transmission options will include both manual and automatic options, the latter possibly being an AMT unit. The production version of the Tata 45X is expected to be launch in the second half of 2019 and will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, and Honda Jazz.

The production model will be based on the Tata 45X concept shown at the Auto Expo 2018

A near-production test mule of Tata Motors’ upcoming premium hatchback, codenamed 45X, was recently spotted testing. Unlike the previously seen prototype models, the latest test mule appears to come with a bunch of production parts hinting at the fact that the car is nearing completion, that too quite quickly. Some of the near-production bits that we can see on the test mule include the headlamps, taillamps and a set of split-four-spoke alloy wheels. While the images aren’t the clearest ones, it’s quite apparent that the production version of the car is shaping up to be very pretty similar to the concept car that we saw at the Auto Expo 2018.

The upcoming premium hatchback is based on Tata Motors‘ new Alpha platform and will also be the second model to employ the company’s new Impact Design 2.0 philosophy. In fact, despite the camouflage, we can see some of the concept models design traits like the sleek, single motion grille and headlamp cluster, the wide central airdam, the sweptback A-Pillar and the coupe-like roofline. The alloys, as we mentioned earlier, are a new addition and we also get a glimpse of the LED taillamps. However, we still do not get to see the interior of the car.

Despite Donald Trump’s Tweet, Ford Won’t Make Hatchback In US

Ford won’t be moving production of a hatchback vehicle to the US from China – despite President Trump’s claim that his taxes on Chinese imports mean the Focus Active can be built in America.

Ford says it won’t be moving production of a hatchback vehicle to the United States from China – despite President Donald Trump’s claim that his taxes on Chinese imports mean the Focus Active can be built in America. Citing Trump’s new tariffs, Ford on August 31 said it was dropping plans to ship the Focus Active from China to America. Trump took to Twitter Sunday to declare victory and write: “This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!”

Ford

Trump was referring to a Reuters article published last week on CNBC that said Ford cancelled plans to sell a small, Chinese made vehicle because of possible hikes in tariffs. In the article, a Ford official said it would have been a “niche vehicle” in US markets, and will not cost jobs or hurt sales.

In a Sunday statement replying to the tweet, Ford said “it would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S.” given forecast yearly sales below 50,000.

For now, that means Ford simply won’t sell the vehicle in the United States.

Trump first threatened to up tariffs against China in July, boosting the looming trade war between the US and China. After months of discussion among US companies that the tariffs would cause costs of a wide variety of huge range of industrial and consumer goods.

Trump told reporters Friday that the tariffs would “take place very soon.”

Tata’s 45X Concept-Based Premium Hatchback Spotted Testing

View Photos

The Tata 45X-based hatchback will employ the Impact Design 2.0 design language

A prototype model of Tata Motors’ upcoming premium hatchback has been spotted testing in India again. Based on the Tata 45X concept car that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2018, the heavy camouflage and make-shift parts indicate that the car is still in the early stages of testing. When it’s launched, the production version of the 45X will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20 in India, but judging by the looks of it, we do not expect that to happen any time before late 2019.

Also Read: Tata 45X Concept: All You Need To Know

The Tata 45X, which is based on the Alpha platform, also serves as a basis for the carmaker’s new Impact Design 2.0 design language, and despite the fact that the production model will not feature the dramatic shape and lines of the concept car, we do expect to see some new design and styling cues to grace the new hatchback. Up front, we can see a portion of the honeycomb grille and wide central airdam with horizontal slats. Exterior features like the headlamps, outside rear-view mirror, and taillamps are still temporary units, and the test mule is still running on steel wheels.

Tata 45X-based premium hatchback gets make-shift headlamps, ORVMs, and taillamps

The silhouette alone tells us that the car will be larger than any of the existing hatchbacks in the company’s line-up. However, despite the concept model being around 4253 mm in total length, the production version will remain under the 4-metre mark, for tax benefits. Having said that, we do hope Tata manages to 2630 mm wheelbase of the concept car, which is more than the Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz and even the Maruti Suzuki Baleno offers. We still do not know what the cabin of the car will look like, even of the 45X concept for that matter, so we will have to wait for more details to surface on that front.

It’s too soon to comment on engine options, however, we expect the premium hatch to get the existing 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and the turbocharged 1.5-litre motor, which currently power the Nexon. Transmission options will include both manual and automatic options, mostly AMT of course.

Tata 45X-Based Premium Hatchback Prototype Spotted Testing

The model is based on the Tata 45X concept showcased at the Auto Expo 2018

A prototype model of the Tata 45X-based premium hatchback was recently spotted testing in India. The test mule is seen heavily covered in camouflage which indicates that the car is still in the early stages of development and we’ll have to wait quite a bit before Tata is ready with the production model. Based on Tata Motors’ new AMP architecture, upon its launch, the upcoming premium hatchback will rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20 in India.

We first saw the car in its concept form at the Auto Expo 2018, and despite the heavy camouflage, we can see that the test mule is shaping up to become more like the concept model. Unlike one of the earlier test mules we saw last year, the latest prototype of the Tata premium hatchback look a bit more toned down and gets better proportions. We also expect the rear section of the car to get a less dramatic design, unlike the concept car but it is too soon to confirm anything. The car still features a temporary pair of taillamps and comes with a set of steel wheels. The front section is not visible in these new images, although based on the concept car the model is likely to come the carmaker’s signature humanity line accentuated by projector headlamps, LED DRLs and other premium features.

Tata 45X Premium Hatchback Test Mule is seen with temporary taillamps and steel wheels

In terms of dimensions, the production model is expected to be similar to the 45X concept, which measures 4253 mm in length, 1850 mm in width, and 1451 mm in height. The wheelbase of the 45X stands at 2630 mm, which if retained, in the production model, is more than the Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz and even the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. However, Tata might try and keep the total length within 4 metres for tax benefits similar to its rivals.

While it is too soon to comment on engine options, we expect the car to come with the company’s tried and testes 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, accompanied by the turbocharged 1.5-litre motor that currently does duty on the Nexon, and is next expected to come with the special Tata Tiago JTP edition. Transmission options will include both manual and automatic options. The production version of the Tata 45X is expected to be launch in the second half of 2019.
