Zlatan Ibrahimovic Happy To Make Toronto FC His 500th Goal Victim

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic made history on Saturday, scoring his 500th career goal in stunning fashion, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Los Angeles Galaxy to a win over Toronto FC. The 36-year-old Ibrahimovic has always had a flair for the dramatic and he did just that in becoming the third active footballer to reach the milestone for club and country, joining Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The six-foot-five (1.95 metre) Ibrahimovic delivered a perfectly-timed roundhouse kick in the 43th minute that fooled goalkeeper Alex Bono for his 17th goal of the season.

The goal cut the deficit to 3-1 and sparked a three-goal Galaxy rally, but the defending MLS champions held on to win 5-3 in front of a crowd of 30,700 at BMO Field in Toronto.

“I am happy for Toronto because they will be remembered as my 500th victim,” said Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic came into Saturday’s game tied for second in MLS scoring. He has 17 goals and eight assists in 22 appearances with the Galaxy.

Jonathan dos Santos volleyed the ball over to the Swedish star who whipped around and tapped it home.

“I was close to the goal. It reminds me of a goal I did in Ajax,” said Ibrahimovic, who has five game winners for Los Angeles. “It came from a cross and I turned around and I hit it. I was just trying to hit the goal and it went in.”

Ibrahimovic scored 62 of his goals for Sweden with the rest coming while playing for Malmo FF, Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and now the Galaxy.

Jonathan Osorio’s 75th-minute go-ahead goal halted a three-goal Galaxy comeback and helped give Toronto some much needed points in their playoff push.

Jay Chapman added an insurance goal in stoppage time with a low shot to the corner.

Ibrahimovic left Manchester United to join the Galaxy at the start of this season.

“It is an incredible achievement,” said Galaxy coach Dominic Kinnear of Ibrahimovic’s goal. “The guy is a great goal scorer and it is a memorable one for him for many reasons.”

Asked if it was memorable one for the coach, Kinnear said, “In about 10 years from now.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Chases First Juventus Goal Before Champions League Return To Spain

Serie A returns after a two-week international break with former Real Madrid player Ronaldo having skipped Portugal duty to focus on his new club, just as his teammate, Croatia’s World Cup runner-up Mario Mandzukic, did.

During the break the 33-year-old was pictured relaxing on board his yacht off St Tropez on the French Riveria.

“Vitamin D,” wrote the five-time Ballon d’Or winner under a photo of him lounging on the deck of his yacht.

“As my teammates say, back to reality, work done,” he later posted. “Feeling good!! Let’s go.”

Coach Massimiliano Allegri says he is not concerned that Ronaldo has failed to find the net despite 23 shots at goal in three games.

“It takes time. We’ll all be fresher after the break and that’s when the real season starts,” said Allegri.

Ronaldo had to wait until his fourth game for Real Madrid last season to get his first league goal.

Germany midfielder Sami Khedira pointed out in an interview after his contract at Juventus was extended this week that the Portuguese star was brought in not to rack up goals but to make the difference in the Champions League and turn “dreams into reality”.

Juventus beat Sassuolo 7-0 in their final match last season, but the club from Modena have made a strong start this campaign and are just behind the champions in the table after two wins and a draw.

Allegri will be keen to rotate his side with a crowded schedule of seven games in 21 days, and defender Andrea Barzagli sidelined with a calf problem.

Argentine Paolo Dybala – Juventus’s top Serie A scorer last season – and Brazilian Douglas Costa look set to start on the bench.

Despite being overshadowed by the arrival of Ronaldo, Dybala insists he feels fortunate to play in the same team as the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“I told myself after I was lucky to play with Lionel Messi in the national team, I have now had the opportunity to play alongside Ronaldo,” said Dybala.

Napoli, Roma and Inter Milan also have Champions League games on their minds.

Roma host Chievo on Sunday after their loss to AC Milan before the break, and ahead of a trip to Spain to take on holders Real Madrid.

Inter Milan play at home against Parma on Saturday before playing Tottenham Hotspur in the San Siro in their first European game since the 2011-2012 season.

Luciano Spalletti’s Inter – with last year’s star forward Mauro Icardi fighting to shake off a muscular injury – are coming off a 3-0 win over Bologna after taking just a point from their first two games.

Carlo Ancelotti will look to put his first defeat as Napoli coach behind him when last season’s runners-up host Fiorentina before playing Red Star in Belgrade on Tuesday.

Fiorentina have won two games with their first match against Sampdoria postponed because of the Genoa bridge disaster.

AC Milan head to Cagliari in Sardinia with former Juventus forward Gonzalo Higuain also waiting to score his first goal for his new club.

Fixtures

Saturday

Inter Milan v Parma, Napoli v Fiorentina, Frosione v Sampdoria

Sunday

Roma v Chievo,  Genoa v Bologna, Juventus v Sassuolo, Udinese v Torino, Empoliv Lazio, Cagliari v AC Milan

Monday

SPAL v Atalanta

Chelsea Leave It Late As DeAndre Yedlin Own Goal Kills Off Newcastle

Newcastle responded with a goal from Joselu in a rare attack and looked set to steal a point before Chelsea’s last-gasp winner made it three successive victories for the Blues.

Benitez will say his approach was justified and it acknowledged the gap in quality between the two squads.

Before this game he earmarked Sarri’s team as genuine title candidates and even gave them the edge over Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal, so Benitez was never likely to go toe-to-toe with Chelsea.

Jorginho, a player Benitez bought while he was in charge of Napoli, prompted intelligently in midfield and Hazard, starting for the first time this season, twisted and turned as he probed for a gap in Newcastle’s defence that often featured nine men in front of keeper Martin Dubravka.

But too often, Chelsea failed to find a way through and were particularly frustrated in the first 45 minutes.

Hazard placed two shots wide, while Antonio Rudiger and Pedro was also off-target before Pedro finally forced Dubravka to make a save.

– Dramatic finish –

It was a satisfying half for Benitez, who saw his side create two opportunities on the break when Kepa Arrizabalaga had to save from Jacob Murphy and Salomon Rondon wasted an excellent chance by heading wide.

At the interval, Newcastle must have sensed they could collect at least a point, a target that appeared to be more difficult before the start when Benitez was forced to rule out two of his most influential players, Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey.

The official line was that both were injured, although there were unconfirmed rumours that a training ground argument between Lascelles and Benitez had prompted the manager to leave him out.

Benitez insisted, however, “Shelvey has been playing with pain, we tell him you cannot carry on with pain because it will stop him. Jamaal came in with ankle problem.”

It meant four of Newcastle’s summer signings were starting a game for the first time in a line-up and two of them — Schar and Federico Fernandez — were at the heart of Newcastle’s defence.

Both performed well, particularly in the second half when the pattern was the same but Chelsea delivered more crosses towards Alvaro Morata as they started to run out of patience.

Rudiger almost made the breakthrough when he powered a shot against the bar in the 72nd minute, shortly before Hazard’s penalty.

Even the most optimistic Newcastle supporter must have feared the worst, but Joselu’s 83rd minute header offered them hope before Chelsea won it in dramatic fashion.

Kylian Mbappe’s Goal In Final Generated Most Tweets During World Cup

When football’s rising star Kylian Mbappe scored France’s fourth goal in their World Cup final against Croatia to become the youngest player since Pele to score in a final, fans sent more tweets than at any other point during the tournament, data from Twitter shows. However, Brazil’s Neymar Jr, who attracted as much attention for his rolling and lying on the ground as for his brilliant goals and accurate passes, was the most-mentioned player of the tournament, Twitter said on Tuesday.

Brazil were the most-mentioned team of the World Cup, followed by France and Argentina.

After 64 thrilling matches, including the dramatic World Cup final between France and Croatia, Twitter compiled the numbers and their visualisations.

There were 115 billion impressions (views on Twitter) of tweets during the World Cup, the data showed.

Twitter saw the bulk of the conversations happening during the live matches, including during the final match between France and Croatia, which was the top tweeted match of the tournament.

Brazil’s quarter-final battle with Belgium on July 6 was the second most tweeted match of the tournament followed by Brazil’s match against Mexico on July 2.

Highlighting football fans’ preference for beer, Budweiser emerged as the most globally mentioned brand of the tournament.

Photographer Becomes Part Of Croatia World Cup Goal Celebration

After Mario Mandzukic scored in extra-time to give Croatia a 2-1 win against England in the semi-final, he ran to a corner of the pitch at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium to share his joy with his teammates.

“I was just changing my lens as the players ran towards me,” said photographer Yuri Cortez, who was positioned next to the pitchside advertising boards.

“They just kept coming towards me and they fell on me! It was a crazy moment, they were delighted. Then they suddenly realised that I was underneath them,” said Mexico City-based Cortez.

Quick as a flash, he picked up his camera and took some remarkable close-up shots of the Croats’ joy.

“Then they asked me if I was OK. Another one picked up my lens and another player (Domagoj Vida) gave me a kiss.”

Croatia, who have reached the final for the first time in their history, will play France on Sunday.

Antoine Griezmann Did Not Celebrate Goal Out Of ‘Respect’ For Uruguay

Antoine Griezmann said he did not celebrate his goal against Uruguay in the World Cup quarter-final out of “respect” for the South American nation. Griezmann scored France’s second goal in the 2-0 win in the 61st minute, when his long-range strike found its way into the net after a mistake from Uruguay’s goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Instead of celebrating, Griezmann stood still as French players rushed to him, despite scoring the goal that helped secure his country’s first World Cup semi-final in 12 years. “I didn’t celebrate that goal because when I started as a professional footballer I was supported by a Uruguayan, who showed me the good and the bad of football,” he said.

“Out of respect, I thought it was not appropriate to celebrate that goal.”

In the run-up to the match, Griezmann had spoken about his affinity with Uruguay and his friendship with two Uruguayan players, Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin.

Griezmann plays his club football with Gimenez and Godin at Atletico Madrid and even turned up at the airport wearing a Uruguay shirt to greet his teammates when they qualified for Russia.

Before Friday’s match, Griezmann turned up at the Nizhny Novgorod stadium drinking mate tea, a popular drink in Uruguay.

Not celebrating a goal against a former club has become standard in domestic football, but Griezmann may have been the first player to do at international level, especially at a World Cup.

However he has failed to convince everyone about his affinity with Uruguay.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, when asked about Griezmann prior to the match, replied honestly: “Antoine, no matter how much he says that he’s half-Uruguayan is French and does not know what the Uruguayan feeling is,” said Suarez.

“He does not know the dedication and effort that Uruguayans make from boys to be able to succeed in football with so few people.”
