Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal To Mobilise Public Opinion For Delhi’s Full Statehood

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said he will mobilise public opinion over the next one year to earn full statehood to the national capital.

He was addressing a function to mark the 25th anniversary of the Delhi Assembly’s first sitting on December 14, 1993.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, in his address, said Delhi’s chief ministers from other political parties over the years had demanded full statehood for the Union Territory.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia echoed their views and said the government has to go to the court if it wants to work for the welfare of its people.

Mr Kejriwal said it’s an insult to Delhi’s citizens that the city does not have full statehood.

“We will go out among people to unite them to raise the demand of full statehood for Delhi. We will also be organising events to celebrate the silver jubilee of the Delhi Assembly’s first sitting. In 1947, the country got independence and people got the right to choose their state governments which have power. But Delhi’s citizens do not have independence. Why this step-motherly treatment for Delhi?” he asked.

He expressed the hope that Delhi would get full statehood in the next five years.

He said the Delhi government under Sheila Dikshit had powers but his government’s powers were “taken away” through a notification issued by the Central government in May 2015.

“In this Assembly, former chief minister Madan Lal Khurana had said, ‘I do not even have the power of a peon’. The chosen government here does not have the power to take decisions for the welfare of the people,” he said.

Mr Kejriwal also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.

“The duo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah is dangerous for our country’s present and future. If they are voted to power again, they would not even spare the Constitution of the country. It is the responsibility of every patriotic Indian citizen to ensure that they are defeated. We will do everything to ensure their defeat,” he said on the sidelines of the event.

Mr Goel said in the last two years, no bills have been brought to the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

“Eighteen bills are lying with the Central government. It is really sad that Delhi’s people are deprived of the benefits they would have got had those bills been passed by the central government. In the last two years, no bills have been brought to the Delhi Assembly,” he said.

He said the demand for full statehood for Delhi has resonated in the Delhi Legislative Assembly several times.

He also used the occasion to highlight the fact that the MLAs have been working on salaries that were last hiked in 2011 and he alleged the central government was not bothered about it.

Purushottam Goel, who was a chairman of the Delhi Metropolitan Council, the body that preceded the Assembly, was the chief guest at the event.

“It is wrong that the Central government, through the LG, is trying to run the Delhi government. I can assure you that the BJP is not coming to power in the next five to 10 years,” he said.

Earlier, the Delhi Assembly had adopted a resolution on “full statehood” during a special session. At that time, Kejriwal had said he would campaign for the BJP if the Centre granted full statehood to Delhi.

Trapped In Washing Machine Full Of Hot Water, 4-Year-Old Dies In Dubai

The child’s uncle broke the machine’s door to retrieve his body. (Representational)

Dubai:

A four-year-old boy died after he got trapped in a washing machine filled with hot water at his house in Ajman, Dubai, police said.

The boy was with his grandmother and uncle at their family villa in Al Rawda when he sneaked his way into the laundry room. He got inside the front-load washing machine and closed its door, prompting the washer to run, the Khaleej Times reported on Thursday, citing police officials.

The boy may have climbed into the washing machine out of curiosity and got trapped inside, police said, adding that the machine soon started spinning.

The boy was found by his mother when she came to pick him up from his grandmother’s house. His uncle had to break the door of the machine to retrieve the child’s body.

The body was sent for autopsy and an investigation into the case was ongoing.

YouTube Rewind 2018 Is Full of People Who Didn’t Become Famous on YouTube (and Also Fortnite)

YouTube Rewind is an annual online cultural tradition at this point: a video that looks back at the past year on the platform, released and promoted by YouTube as part of its year in review. It is, in many ways, a glimpse into how YouTube as a company sees the culture that lives within it.

So it is telling that this year’s “rewind” opens with, and heavily features, Will Smith. Yes, the actor. Smith has become a pretty big presence on the site this year, posting slickly produced videos a few times a month to his 4.2 million subscribers. The entire “rewind” video seems to take place inside Smith’s imagination.

As it turns out, Will Smith dreams a lot about Fortnite.

The theme of this year’s video was “Everyone Controls Rewind.” After watching it through a few times, I’m still struggling to figure out how to describe what it is, exactly, that I watched.

Ninja, primarily a star on Twitch who became famous as the first big Fortnite streamer, features prominently as a flying bus driver in a segment about Fortnite, where a bunch of Fortnite streamers and gadget YouTuber/Tesla superfan Marques Brownlee parachute down to the ground (just like in Fortnite!) into a Fortnite-like wilderness where two other YouTubers push a shopping cart – which is a reference to Fortnite!

The famous YouTubers who feature in the video are primarily gathered around a campfire, talking (dressed vaguely like characters from Fortnite, maybe!), as Liza Koshy leads the group in a discussion about how this year’s “rewind” can be whatever they want it to be. The talking acts as a summary of some of the tougher issues that YouTubers addressed in their videos over the past year – representation and burn out, for example. Simone Giertz, a science creator, thanks her fans for sending her positive messages when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor this year.

Other people show up, people you’d know . . . not originally from YouTube: Adam Rippon, the yodeling kid, Trevor Noah, John Oliver. There’s an extended tribute to K-pop and the BTS fandom – an online culture phenomenon that is on, but not unique to, YouTube. “Rewind” has featured late-night hosts and mainstream stars with presences there for years (one year, Dwayne Johnson showed up). This year, however, YouTube culture as told by “rewind” seemed to be primarily about how Will Smith loves Fortnite, a game known for becoming a streaming phenomenon on Twitch.

One segment is literally just a bunch of ideas from YouTube comments in a montage – everything from ASMR to Emma Chamberlain in space to some soccer. And then, you’ll be shocked to learn, “rewind” turns its attention back to Fortnite. Did you know that they dance in Fortnite? They dance in Fortnite. They do the Fortnite dances in YouTube Rewind.

The video ends with Will Smith laughing at the Fortnite bus from the beginning of the video.

“That’s hot,” he proclaims. Fortnite!

I guess what I’m trying to say is that this year’s “rewind” video reads like a sometimes cringey, celebrity-filled fever dream, sponsored by Fortnite. Maybe they’re actually right about 2018.

Afghanistan To Host Ireland For Full Series In Dehradun

Afghanistan will host Ireland for a full series in February-March next year in the Indian city of Dehradun, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday. Afghanistan will play three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), five One-day internationals (ODIs) and a one-off Test against Ireland. While both the teams will play their second Test match since becoming a Test playing nation, Ireland will play their first overseas Test. Earlier in 2018, Ireland started out at home against Pakistan, losing by five wickets, while Afghanistan played India in Bengaluru, losing the contest by an innings and 262 runs.

The matches will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

“The Afghanistan series is a major step forward for Irish cricket as the tour is our first major tour as a Full Member. It will no doubt be a test for the entire squad – taking on Afghanistan in subcontinent conditions will require a level of adjustment by both our batting and bowling units,” icc-cricket.com quoted Ireland batsman Andrew Balbirnie as saying.

“As we saw here at home in the summer, Afghanistan is a quality side with some world class players, and will be a great challenge in their ‘home’ conditions,” he added.

After the completion of the series against Afghanistan, Ireland will host Bangladesh and then play a Test match in England in July.

“The year will start with this Afghanistan series, and will involve a busy home schedule of matches involving multiple Full Member nations – starting with an ODI against England at Malahide in May. There’s also the Lord’s Test against England in July, and the year will end with the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in October,” Balbirnie further said.

“With the retirements this year of Ed Joyce, Niall O’Brien and John Anderson, we know that this is a year that will require the entire squad to step up, and it will also present some of the younger guys with opportunities to stake their claim for national selection. It’s an exciting time to be involved in Irish cricket,” the Ireland batsman further added.

They Went To Buy An iPhone With Bathtub Full Of Coins. Here’s What Happened

A group of pranksters in Russia recently filmed themselves paying for an Apple iPhone XS – with a bathtub full of coins. Russian blogger Svyatoslav Kovalenko shared a video on Instagram that shows him filling up a bathtub with hundreds of coins two days ago. According to the Daily Mail, Mr Kovalenko put 100,000 Russian roubles in the bathtub, which is equivalent to around USD 1,500 or Rs 1,08,000.

The 350 kg bathtub was then carried to an Apple store in a mall in central Moscow. In the video, security guards can be seen trying to stop Mr Kovalenko and his friends from entering.

“Is there anything wrong?” Mr Kovalenko is heard asking the guard.

After two scuffles, the group managed to carry the coin-filled bathtub into the store.

Watch their video below:

In a surprising twist, however, the store actually agreed to carry out the transaction using this bizarre mode of payment. According to reports, it took store employees two hours to count all the coins, so Mr Kovalenko could purchase a 256 GB model of the iPhone XS.

A picture shared on Facebook shows an Apple employee at the task of counting all the coins:

Mr Kovalenko told ABC News that the stunt was pulled off in order to draw attention to people’s attitude towards small change in Russia. In the country, stores will often refuse to serve customers if they don’t carry exact change.

“We decided to do a very global experiment and show who refuses to accept change,” Mr Kovalenko said. “The more people who watch the video, the more people will understand that change, whether it’s a kopek, whether’s it 10 kopeks, it is also currency.”

Parties Are Registered By Their Full Names

The Aam Aadmi Party has sought de-registration of the new party. (File)

New Delhi:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that it registers political parties by their full name and not by abbreviations.

The poll panel’s submission came on a petition by the Aam Aadmi Party against the ECI’s decision to reject its objection against registration of the ‘Aapki Apni Party (Peoples)’ as a political party.

The Aam Aadmi Party has sought de-registration of the new party on the grounds that their abbreviation would be the same — AAP — which could confuse voters.

The ECI’s counsel submitted before the high court that the panel registers political parties by their full names and not by abbreviations, so there would not be any confusion.

Justice C Hari Shankar listed the matter for further hearing on February 22 next year after the counsel for ‘Aapki Apni Party (Peoples)’ sought time to file its response to the plea and the Aam Aadmi Party’s advocate also prayed for time to file rejoinder to the ECI’s reply.

The ECI, in its affidavit, gave a list of various parties which have similar abbreviations and said when the Aam Aadmi Party was registered in 2013, there was already another party registered with the same abbreviation.

The petition, filed through advocate Anupam Srivastava, has claimed that the new party’s name was sounded similar and that could confuse voters.

The Aam Aadmi Party has sought quashing of the ECI’s July 16 order rejecting its objection against registration of Aapki Apni Party (Peoples) as a political party under provisions of the Representation of People Act.
