2018 Fiat Panda Hatchback Scores 0 Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Test

The 2018 Fiat Panda hatchback, one of the most popular offerings from the Italian automaker has scored a very low 0 star rating in the latest Euro NCAP crash tests.

While the 0 Star Car is still a sad reality in India as we have seen recently with the Renault Lodgy, Europe more often than not has cars that scores a higher 4 or 5 star safety rating across the board. Which is why a 0 Star rated car is most certainly something to report about, even though the car in question is not really relevant to India in general. The 2018 Fiat Panda, one of the most popular offerings from the Italian automaker and also it’s cheapest hatchback has scored a dismal 0 star rating in the recent set of tests conducted by the Euro NCAP. The score on the Fiat Panda is one of the lowest ever seen.

Unlike Global NCAP that tests cars that are made in India too, the Euro NCAP tests have far more parameters. The car goes through the usual frontal offset crash test as for the Indian cars but also has a side impact, a full frontal test and several pedestrian tests too. While the Panda’s compartment remained stable for the frontal offset test, the readings on the test dummy showcased weak chest compression. The test results also showcased that the knee and the femur protection was good but while subjected to a full frontal test, dummy readings indicated weak protection of the head and neck.

Commenting on the results, Michiel van Ratingen, General Secretary, Euro NCAP said, “It is truly disappointing to see a brand-new car being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance. It is high time we saw a product from the FIAT-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors.”

The Fiat Panda also scores really poorly in terms of children safety as tests for various ages showcased poor readings to the head and other parts of the body. Euro NCAP also tests car seats in specific for whiplash protection. Tests on the front seats and head restraints showcased marginal protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear end collision and the rear seats in particular indicated poor whiplash protection. The Panda also scored lower as it does not get any automated emergency braking systems or AED.

Mahindra had said Fiat Chrysler’s patent violation complaint against the company is without merit

A U.S. regulator said on Tuesday it would launch an investigation into an off-road utility vehicle produced by Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd following a complaint by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV that it infringed upon the intellectual property rights of its Jeep design.

The ITC said the complaint was related to the import and sale in the United States of certain motorized vehicles and components that Fiat Chrysler had alleged infringed on its trademarks. The agency said it would aim to complete its probe within 45 days.

The ITC has indicated it will begin an investigation of Fiat Chrysler’s complaint and that it will also be conducting a 100-day expedited consideration of the 2009 agreement and its effect on the investigation, said Rich Ansell, vice president of marketing, Mahindra Automotive North America.

Fiat Chrysler could not immediately be reached for comment.

Last month, Mahindra said that Fiat Chrysler had filed a patent violation complaint with the ITC against the company and called the complaint without merit.

Mahindra said that it and its North American unit had filed a public interest statement with the ITC and had begun proceedings in a Michigan court to enforce a design agreement that it had executed with Fiat Chrysler in 2009.

Mahindra was seeking an injunction against Fiat Chrysler from proceeding with the complaint, it added.

Fiat Chrysler had not made a monetary claim in the complaint but was seeking to block Mahindra Automotive from importing any parts or components into the United States that infringe upon Fiat Chrysler’s intellectual property rights, it said.

Exclusive: Mahindra Takes Fiat Chrysler To Court In The United States Over Breach Of Contract

Mahindra and its subsidiary MANA – Mahindra Automotive North America have approached the courts in the United States against a breach of contract by the FCA – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group. Read on to know more.

In a response to the FCA complaint filed with the International Trade Commission (ITC), Mahindra had earlier released a statement that it was aware of the matter and would be responding soon. And now it has, by filing its own complaint against FCA for a breach of contract, in the United States District Court, Eastern District – Michigan. NDTV carandbike has a copy of the filing, which states that the grille used on the Roxor is not liable to any copyright infringement as it is unlike the traditional 7-spoke grille that is used on Jeep vehicles. In 2009, Mahindra and Chrysler had come to an agreement and signed an official contract over the grille the former can use on its vehicles in the United States. Known internally as ‘Approved Grille Design’, the design used a 4 and a half slat design with the central slat raised slightly and also placed below the Mahindra logo. This is also the design that has been used on the Roxor.

As we reported a few weeks ago, FCA or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles had approached the International Trade Commission in the United States to stop sales of the Mahindra Roxor off-road vehicle that was launched in March 2018. The new SUV, which cannot be registered for on-road use is based on the Mahindra Thar that we get in India but bears a different grille as Mahindra does not have the rights to use the iconic seven slat grille in the United States. The iconic seven slat grilles, like the one seen on the Jeep Wrangler has been a trademark of the Jeep brand since inception and features the vertical seven slats combined with two round headlamps and two round foglamps. In comparison, the Roxor used the four and a half slat grille combined with the round headlamps as explained above.

In the contract that was signed by Mike Manley in 2009, when Jeep was still a part an an independent Chrysler Corporation (and not acquired by Fiat at the time), it had stated that it would not assert ‘any claim for infringement of Chrysler’s trade dress, trademark, or other intellectual property rights in the United States based on: (1) a grille having the Approved Grille Design; or (2) a vehicle containing or using the Approved Grille Design’ against M&M or its affiliates.

In its complaint to the ITC, Fiat Chrysler had also said, “The Roxor imports threaten it with substantial injury as they are underselling Jeeps. Mahindra capitalises on the cost advantages of manufacturing their products in India and then importing knocked-down kits to the U.S., where they’re assembled in the Detroit area.” Responding to this allegation, Mahindra has also countered that claim by stating that not only is the Roxor grille manufactured in Michigan by a third party vendor but it was also designed in the United States at Mahindra’s facility in the same state.

mahindra roxor suv

M&M has also said that Fiat’s breach of contract has caused ‘monetary and intangible harm to Mahindra.’ The Indian automaker has also stated that the complaint to the International Trade Commission by FCA so soon after the launch of Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA)’s new product is ‘to arrest and halt the positive momentum of signing up new dealers and customers.’ The automaker added, ‘It is also damaging the Mahindra and ROXOR brands in the minds of dealers and consumers in ways that would be difficult or impossible to fully measure; and which could mean the difference between a successful and profitable vehicle launch and a failed vehicle launch.’ Mahindra’s complaint goes on to claim that ‘Fiat’s breaches of the contract have caused, and will continue to cause, Mahindra irreparable harm, including loss of goodwill, harm to reputation, and loss of fair competition and competitive advantage.’

mahindra roxor suv

The Indian automaker has further pointed out that Michael Manley – who signed the contract in 2009, was then President and CEO of Jeep and is now the CEO of FCA. Mahindra has appealed to the court to find that the contract signed in 2009 is valid and that FCA’s conduct constitutes a breach of contract. It has requested the court to declare that the Mahindra Roxor design does not infringe Fiat’s design in terms of the grille and that Mahindra be awarded damages caused by Fiat’s conduct in the form of equitable monetary relief, attorney fees and any other damages that the court deems worthy.

Mahindra opened headquarters in Southeast Michigan for its newly developed North American branch

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV filed a U.S. trade complaint seeking to prevent Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. from importing an off-road vehicle that looks like its iconic Jeep.

The Fiat Chrysler group filed the complaint on Aug. 1 at the U.S. International Trade Commission, claiming that the Mahindra Roxor infringes key characteristics of Jeep’s signature trade dress — namely the “boxy body shape with flat-appearing vertical sides and rear body ending at about the same height as the hood.”

“They are a nearly identical copy of the iconic Jeep design,” Fiat Chrysler said in its complaint, which included photos comparing the Roxor to the Jeep. “In fact, the accused product was ‘modeled after the original Willys Jeep.'”

In 2017, Mumbai-based Mahindra, which claims to be India’s largest sport utility vehicle manufacturer, opened headquarters in Southeast Michigan for its newly developed North American branch.

Fiat Chrysler has also said that Roxor imports threaten it with substantial injury as they are underselling Jeeps. Mahindra capitalizes on the cost advantages of manufacturing their products in India and then importing knocked-down kits to the U.S., where they’re assembled in the Detroit area.

Fiat Chrysler has become increasingly reliant on its Jeep product line. On Wednesday, the company reported its highest ever July sales for Jeep brand vehicles, up 16 percent, to power the company’s overall 5.9 percent jump from a year ago.

Mahindra announced plans in November to invest $600 million in its Roxor manufacturing facility. The Michigan unit tripled its workforce and by 2020, the group plans to employ as many as 670 workers there. Fiat Chrysler’s complaint pointed to Mahindra’s “substantial foreign manufacturing capacity combined with its demonstrated intention to penetrate the United States market and harm FCA’s goodwill and business.”

Sergio Marchionne, CEO Who Steered Fiat Chrysler, Dies Aged 66

Sergio Marchionne, the former chief executive officer of Fiat Chrysler and architect of the automaker’s dramatic turnaround, has died. He was 66. His death was confirmed Wednesday by Exor NV, the holding company of Fiat’s founding Agnelli family just days after Marchionne were replaced as CEO. His health had declined suddenly following complications from shoulder surgery. Selected as CEO of Fiat SpA in June 2004, Marchionne took the Italian manufacturer from the brink of bankruptcy to the New York Stock Exchange, where he rang the bell on Oct. 13, 2014, to mark the debut of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, the London company created when Fiat bought the Detroit carmaker.

Marchionne, who described himself as a corporate fixer, was Fiat’s fifth CEO in less than two years when he took over. He replaced Giuseppe Morchio, who quit after the billionaire Agnelli family refused to give him the joint title of chairman and CEO when then-Chairman Umberto Agnelli died of cancer.

Fiat Rebounds

Marchionne was handed an automaker that lost more than 6 billion euros ($7 billion) in 2003. By 2005, he had returned the company to a profit by wringing some $2 billion from an alliance with General Motors Co., laying off thousands of workers, introducing new models, and slashing the time it took to get a new car to market to just 18 months, from four years.

In 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration announced that Fiat would take control of Chrysler LLC, rescuing the American company from bankruptcy.

“I don’t care what a tough guy he was to work for, he saved our company,” said Cass Burch, a Chrysler and Jeep dealer in Georgia. “He deserves a bronze statue.”

The deal gave Marchionne “a huge sense of responsibility,” he said in a 2011 interview. His office on the fourth floor of Fiat’s Turin headquarters was adorned with a black-and-white poster of the word “competition” and a Picasso print bearing the motto, “Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.”

During his tenure at Fiat, Marchionne boosted the company’s value more than 10-fold by restructuring the auto business and separating assets. Among the biggest spinoffs was the 2015 listing of supercar-maker Ferrari NV, where Marchionne also served as CEO and chairman.

Thrill Ride

Marchionne’s direct manner and frumpy demeanor — he was rarely seen wearing anything but jeans and a black pullover sweater — made him stand out in buttoned-down Italy. He knew how to move fast and enjoyed driving his half-dozen Ferraris. “When you’re pissed off, there’s nothing better than this,” he said, stomping on the accelerator of his black Enzo at the company’s test track in 2014 and pushing the car from a comfortable 120 miles per hour to something over 200.

Fueled by a dozen espressos a day and packs of Muratti cigarettes, he stormed into Fiat and fired most of the top management, then did the same at Chrysler in 2009, installing a dozen newcomers on his second day.

He also knew speed can be dangerous. In 2007, he wrecked a $350,000 Ferrari on a highway in Switzerland. “In the car business, sometimes you crash,” he said. Yet even as he garnered criticism from politicians and unions for slashing jobs and cutting costs, Marchionne argued that moving slowly could be even more risky. When he took over both Fiat and Chrysler, he always maintained, the companies needed radical change in order to survive.

Consolidation Push

The Chrysler deal was part of a long-standing campaign Marchionne had waged to spur consolidation in the auto industry, which he claimed had far too much capacity for all players to survive. To that end, he publicly campaigned for a merger with General Motors Co. in 2015 but was rebuffed by the U.S. carmaker.

Marchionne had planned to leave Fiat in 2019, but with his health deteriorating, on July 21 he was replaced as CEO of Fiat Chrysler by Mike Manley, head of the Jeep and Ram brands. Louis C. Camilleri took over at Ferrari, and Suzanne Heywood succeeded Marchionne as chairman of truck and farm-equipment maker CNH Industrial NV.

Marchionne was born on June 17, 1952, in Chieti, a hilltop town near the Adriatic sea in central Italy. His father was a local policeman, and when Marchionne was 14 the family moved to Toronto.

A chartered accountant and attorney with dual Canadian and Italian citizenship, Marchionne began his career in Canada at Deloitte & Touche, then moved on to packaging producer Lawson Group. In 1994, Marchionne joined Alusuisse Lonza Group Ltd. after the Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical company acquired Lawson.

Three years later, as Alusuisse CEO, he spun off the drug business to create Lonza Group AG, where he tripled profit in three years. He later consolidated his reputation as a turnaround specialist at SGS SA, a Geneva-based product-testing company at the time controlled by the Agnelli family.

Marchionne and his estranged wife, Orlandina, had two children, Alessio and Jonathan. His current partner, Manuela Battezzato, works in Fiat Chrysler’s press office.

Fiat Chrysler Boss Sergio Marchionne Exits Amid Health Crisis: Sources

Marchionne is credited with rescuing Fiat and Chrysler from bankruptcy.

MILAN/PARIS:

Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne is to be replaced permanently at the helm of the global carmaker as well as Ferrari, after suffering serious complications from surgery, people with knowledge of the matter said on Saturday.

The boards of Fiat Chrysler (FCA), Ferrari and CNH Industrial, the truck and tractor maker Marchionne also chairs, were meeting on Saturday and may name his successors the same day, two sources said.

Spokespeople for FCA and Ferrari declined to comment.

Marchionne, credited with rescuing Fiat and Chrysler from bankruptcy since taking the wheel at the Italian carmaker in 2004, had been due to step down from the combined group next April. His internal successor had yet to be named.

FCA said earlier this month that Marchionne had undergone shoulder surgery and was in recovery. But the 66-year-old has since suffered “massive” and serious complications, according to the sources.

The group’s Chief Financial Officer Richard Palmer, Europe chief Alfredo Altavilla and Jeep brand boss Mike Manley are often cited among possible successors.

At luxury carmaker Ferrari, spun off by FCA in 2016, board member Louis Camilleri is now likely to replace Marchionne as CEO, one source said. Marchionne had previously said he planned to stay on as Ferrari Chairman and CEO until 2021.

Camilleri’s likely appointment was first reported by Automotive News, which also said FCA Chairman and Agnelli family scion John Elkann would be Ferrari’s new chairman. The Agnelli family still controls all three companies.

The boards of FCA, Ferrari and CNH are expected to issue separate statements after all three meetings have concluded.

On Friday, FCA denied a report by Italian website Lettera43 that Elkann had summoned top executives to a meeting on Saturday in order to reassign Marchionne’s responsibilities.

Fiat Workers Call For Strike After Owner Buys Cristiano Ronaldo

Fiat workers call strike over Cristiano Ronaldo. (File)

Fiat factory workers in Italy can think of a few things they’d rather see their owner spend $130 million on than Cristiano Ronaldo.

A Fiat Chrysler Automobiles union in the south of the country called for a strike to protest the purchase of star player by Juventus Football Club, which like the carmaker is owned by the Agnelli family. That’s money that could have been used for job-boosting investments like making better cars, the union said.

“It’s unacceptable that, while FCA and CNHI workers continue to make huge economic sacrifices, the company spends hundreds of millions of euros on the purchase of a player,” union USB Lavoro Privato said in a statement. It’s calling for a strike the Melfi plant in southern Italy between 10 p.m. on July 15 and 6 p.m. on July 17.

Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid Football Club agreed on July 10 to transfer five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo to Juventus after the player asked to leave. Juventus will pay 100 million euros ($117 million) for the move and another 12 million euros in additional fees to sign the player to a four-year contract, the club said in a statement.

The Agnelli family, which has owned Turin-based Juventus for more than 90 years, controls Ferrari and Fiat Chrysler through its holding company, Exor, which owns 64 percent of Juventus.

Fiat Chrysler, whose Jeep logo is plastered across Juventus’ black-and-white-striped jerseys, could get a huge advertising boost in the deal, according to analysts. If Ronaldo can lead Juventus to the UEFA Champions League final, the media exposure for that year alone would be worth about $58.3 million, according to Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group.

“We’re all employees of the same owner, but in such a period of enormous social difficulty this difference in treatment cannot and must not be accepted,” the union said. “The company should invest in car models that guarantee the futures of thousands of people, rather than enriching only one.”
