Poll Panel Rejects Mizoram BJP Plea To Extend Date Of Filing Nominations

BJP wanted to extend the date for filing nominations citing the law and order situation in Mizoram

New Delhi:

The Election Commission on Thursday rejected a plea of the BJP to extend the last date of filing nominations for the November 28 assembly polls in Mizoram.

The party had moved the plea citing the law and order situation in the northeastern state.

In a letter to state BJP chief JV Hluna, the poll panel said his plea has “not been acceded to on account of peace and normalcy in the state today.”

Friday is the last date of filing nominations.

There have been protests demanding the ouster of Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S B Shashank by the NGO Coordination Committee.

But the protests were called off Wednesday after the officer left for Delhi.

The NGO Coordination Committee, the top body of civil societies and students’ organisations in the north-eastern state, has been demanding that Mr Shashank be replaced and transferred outside the state.

It also demanded that 11,232 Bru voters lodged in six Tripura relief camps be allowed to exercise their franchise at their respective polling stations in Mizoram and not in Tripura as committed by the poll panel in 2014.

India Aim To Extend Winning Streak

The Indian team will hope their middle-order gets some playing time when it takes on a resolute Afghanistan in the final ‘Super Four’ encounter of the Asia Cup on Tuesday. India have been emphatic after an unimpressive start against Hong Kong, with a couple of one-sided victories over arch-rivals Pakistan and an equally facile one against Bangladesh. With a spot in Friday’s final sealed, skipper Rohit Sharma may want some of his untested middle-order batsmen to get quality time in the middle against someone of Rashid Khan’s calibre. Often in cricket, the ‘Law of Averages’ catches up with the best performing teams at a critical juncture. Shikhar Dhawan (327) and skipper Rohit (269) have done the bulk of the scoring in the four matches so far with very little contribution being required from the other batsmen in the line-up. The next highest scorer is Ambati Rayudu (116 runs) because he comes in at No 3. (LIVE SCORECARD)

The problem has been lack of batting time for the likes of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav and Dinesh Karthik so far. Sample this: Rohit and Shikhar have so far faced 284 and 321 deliveries respectively. The next best Rayudu has played 162 balls. However, Karthik (78 balls), Dhoni (40 balls) and Kedar (27 balls) can be found wanting if there is a top-order collapse on the big day. Rohit had given Dhoni an opportunity to come in at No 4 against Bangladesh and the former captain scored 33 runs. But it was a pressure-free situation. Dhoni’s Achilles heel of late has been to keep the scoreboard ticking in pressure situations that the middle-overs throw up. If the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman can put pressure, it will be a good warm-up for the middle-order trio before the final match. The Indian captain might fancy batting first in case he wins the toss, which in turn will give his team a chance to bat 50 overs instead of chasing another modest total. (Play fantasy league and win cash daily)

India: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Siddharth Kaul, Manish Pandey

Afghanistan: Mohammad Shahzad, Ihsanulluah Jamat, Javed Ahmadi, Rahmat Shah, Asghar Stanikzai, Hasmat Shahidi, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Najibullah Zadran, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Aftab Alam, Samiullah Shenwari, Munir Ahmed, Sayed Ahmed Sherzad, Ashraf, Momand Wafadar.

Extend Reservation To The Poor But Don’t Disturb SC Quota: Union Minister

Giving privilege to economically backward upper classes would bring harmony, Ramdas Athawale said. (File)

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has said he favours increasing the 50 per cent cap in job reservation to 75 per cent to include the economically weak among the upper castes even as he emphasised that the quota given to the Scheduled Castes should not be disturbed.

“The percentage of reservation should be enhanced from the existing 50 percent to 75 per cent,” Mr Athawale, Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment said.

Mr Athawale said he was in favour of extending reservation on economic basis to “backward upper castes”, however adding that the criteria for giving reservation to Scheduled Castes should not be changed.

On the 25 per cent enhanced quota, Mr Athawale said, economically backward upper classes may be given the privilege “as it would bring harmony in the society”.

Thakurs in Uttar Pradesh, Rajputs in Rajasthan, Jats in Haryana, Patel Patidar in Gujarat may be given reservation from the enhanced quota, as per their demand, he added.

Mr Athawale justified the modified SC/ST ordinance and said it was been done by the Centre to protect the old law.

Sensex, Nifty Extend Losses To Second Day; Sensex Closes 294 Points Lower, Nifty Ends At 11,278

Stock market on Tuesday: Declines in banking, metal, auto and energy stocks dragged the indices lower

The stock markets extended losses to a second straight day, with the Sensex closing 294 points lower on Tuesday. The weakness in the domestic equity markets was in line with global peers amid worsened trade tensions between the US and China. The NSE benchmark index Nifty fell 98 points to end at 11,278, while the BSE Sensex settled at 37,290. Banking and financial services stocks slipped a day after the government proposed a plan to merge PSU lenders Vijaya Bank, Bank of Baroda and Dena Bank. Declines in metal, auto and energy stocks also dragged the indices lower.

Top laggards on the 50-scrip Nifty index were SBI, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Tata Motors, Hindustan Petroleum and Bajaj Auto, closing between 3 per cent and 4 per cent lower.

The Nifty Bank – the NSE’s sectoral index comprising banking stocks – finished the day 1.4 per cent lower. Bank of Baroda closed 17 per cent lower while PNB shed 4.4 per cent. The Nifty PSU Bank shed 5.4 per cent as the biggest sectoral loser.

The government had on Monday proposed a plan to merge state-run Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank, as part of efforts to tackle a pile of bad loans hurting the banking sector. The merger of the three banks, subject to approval by their boards, will create the third largest bank in the country.

Analysts said the merger plan failed to enthuse investors, and the steps announced by the government to curb rupee fall did not please the Street.

The stock markets also took weak cues from Asian peers, where equities fell, and copper prices eased after Washington announced new tariffs on Chinese imports. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slipped 0.3 per cent after escalation of trade tensions between the US and China, the world’s two biggest economies.

Tata Motors closed 3.5 per cent lower, a day after its unit Jaguar Land Rover said it would cut output at a UK car plant post warnings on the impact of Brexit and diesel policy.

China To Extend China-Pakistan Economic Corridor To West Of Pakistan

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Imran Khan in Islamabad.

China has already invited Afghanistan — west to Pakistan — to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Iran, which is located further west, has expressed interest in joining the project.

The over $50 billion project — a key component of Beijing’s Belt and Road programme — is opposed by India as its planned route goes through the disputed Kashmir region.

“The two sides will advance the CPEC. In light of Pakistan’s economic development and its people’s need, we will identify the pathways and cooperation for the CPEC,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang.

“We will accelerate the industrial cooperation and projects of people’s livelihood, extend the CPEC to the western area and make more people to benefit from it,” he said.

The CPEC envisages to link China’s Kashgar in Xinjiang to Pakistan’s Gwadar port.

Geng Shuang was replying to a question about Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s three-day visit to Pakistan last week during which he met the country’s new leadership.

Liverpool Extend Winning Streak Despite Alisson Becker Blunder

But Leicester couldn’t find the equaliser as Liverpool’s defence remained firm in front of Alisson to secure their fourth successive win heading into the international break.

Alisson’s counterpart Kasper Schmeichel, making his 300th appearance for Leicester after signing a new contract in midweek, was into the action within the first three minutes.

Mohamed Salah put Firmino through but he could only fire against Schmeichel’s legs, and from the rebound, Salah side-footed wide.

The Reds took a 10th-minute lead when Senegal winger Mane made the most of his ricochet off Harry Maguire from Andrew Robertson’s cross to bury left-footed to Schmeichel’s right for his third goal of the season.

Liverpool remained on top and Joe Gomez sent a header looping well over the bar from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.

Leicester’s first chance came in the 22nd minute when Demarai Gray got away from a defender to latch on to Ghezzal’s pass and squeezed in a shot that Alisson smothered.

The home side continued to find it hard to open Liverpool up, and were being forced to try their luck from distance as James Maddison fired over from long range.

But they had eased themselves into the game and were finally starting to give Klopp’s side something to think about.

Reds held firm

Just as Leicester might have thought they had turned the tide, Liverpool broke away quickly and doubled their lead.

Salah forced Schmeichel to push his shot around the post, and from their second successive corner, Firmino met James Milner’s flag-kick with a firm header into the far corner of the net from 10 yards.

Leicester pressed to reduce the arrears following the restart and Ghezzal surprised Alisson with a low cross that bounced just wide of the far post.

Maddison was the nearly man again in Leicester’s next attack, when only the outstretched leg of the lunging Gomez blocked a goal-bound effort after he wriggled past Alexander-Arnold.

Leicester were having their best spell of the game as the hour mark approached.

Wes Morgan failed to sort his feet out from point-blank range after Marc Albrighton and Gray also missed contact from Ben Chilwell’s low centre.

Leicester’s persistence was rewarded in the 63rd minute.

And after so much criticism of Liverpool’s goalkeeping department in recent years, it was another howler from their last line of defence.

Alisson dallied on a back pass from Virgil Van Dijk and allowed himself to be dispossessed by substitute Kelechi Iheanacho on the byline and he crossed for Ghezzal to steer home

Klopp made a double substitution on 69 minutes in a bid to wrest back control as Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri came on for Henderson and Salah.

The changes made little effect however, although Leicester’s charge faded as Liverpool held firm in the closing stages.

Lalu Yadav Surrenders In Ranchi After Court Refuses To Extend Parole

Bihar politician Lalu Yadav surrendered in Jharkhand’s Ranchi today, days after a court refused to extend his parole. The former Bihar Chief Minister, jailed for corruption last year, had been out on bail since May.

“I am following the court’s order. I am unwell but I have faith in the high court verdict,” said the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief.

Mr Yadav was jailed in December for three-and-a-half years after being convicted in a multi-million-rupee scam involving the embezzlement of government funds in Bihar meant for cattle fodder in the 1990s when he was chief minister of undivided Bihar.

The 70-year-old had asked for a three-month extension of his parole saying he needed treatment for anal abscess, kidney stone and enlarged prostate glands. But the Jharkhand High Court rejected it and ordered him to return to jail by today.

Doctors from the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai would examine Lalu Yadav and inform the court about his condition, his lawyer Prabhat Kumar said after his surrender.

The court also asked the state government to provide medical care to Lalu Yadav whenever needed.

The CBI had strongly opposed any more reprieve for Lalu Yadav, saying he had already taken about three months off his jail term for his treatment.

Laly Yadav was granted six weeks’ provisional bail in May. He was restrained from taking part in any public function or political activity and was also barred from interacting with the media during that time.

Major Airlines Extend Flight Time To Avoid Compensation Payouts: Report

The report found 87 per cent of British Airways flights analysed found to be slower. (Representational)

Plane journeys are taking longer than a decade ago, according to a report that claims the change is due to airlines “padding” their schedules to create an impression that passengers are reaching their destinations on time.

The report by London-based travel guide, Which?, carriers were adding extra time to flight schedules, in some cases up to 30 minutes, to ensure they maintain punctuality and are therefore less likely to be liable for compensation payouts, the Guardian reported on Monday.

A majority of flight routes are advertised as taking longer than 10 years ago, despite improvements in aircraft technology, the report found.

Researchers examined average flight times for 125 routes operated by large airlines in 2009 and compared them with last year.

They found that 76 routes, 61 per cent, are now slated to take longer; with 87 per cent of British Airways flights analysed found to be slower. That proportion is 82 per cent for Ryanair, 75 per cent for Virgin Atlantic and 62 per cent for easyJet.

British Airways flights from Heathrow to Bangkok, New York and Singapore were extended by 20 minutes, and a Virgin Atlantic flight from Heathrow to Newark Liberty airport, New Jersey, now takes an average of 35 minutes longer.

Rory Boland, Which? travel editor, said: “Passengers are likely to feel that schedule padding is another case of airlines pulling the wool over their eyes. Instead, longer scheduled flight times are likely to mean passengers spend more time sitting around at the gate or on the plane itself, just so the airline can pat itself on the back for being ”on time” at your destination.”
