Exciting Blends, Trivia and Lots Of Caffeine, Here’s What Went Into The Coffee Crawl We Attended At Khan Market

How much do you love your cup of coffee? Do you love it enough to hop four beloved food hotspots in the capital to learn the nitty-gritties of your favourite brewed delight? That’s the extra mile we went with the exceedingly fun and insightful coffee crawl with Kaffa Cerrado last Saturday. Kaffa Cerrado is an artisanal coffee brand helmed by siblings Rasalika, Saudamini and Krittivas, all of whom are trained coffee roasters. Offering a vast selection of exquisite blends and brews, Kaffa Cerrado is also one of the few conscientious coffee makers in the country, which uses a ‘Green Roaster’ that is energy efficient and emits lesser greenhouse gasses!

As the nippy air wraps us in its chilly embrace, we are on a perpetual look-out for a reason or two to reach out to our favourite cup of coffee. Here’s what went down on our Saturday afternoon outing at Khan Market, New Delhi.

We kick-started our lazy Saturday at Perch, where we first tried their pour-over Ethiopian coffee. Brewed manually, the coffee was filtered through a flask using a special filter paper. Krittivas told us that the density of this seemingly inconsequential filter paper can bring about a vast difference in taste and flavour of your coffee. The concentration and ratio of coffee and water, is another facet that differs from preparation to preparation. Pour-over is one of the oldest and traditional ways of making coffee. Different restaurants have different blends, with coffee sourced from different regions, which again enhances or tones down the flavour of your cuppa. Next manual brew we tried at Perch was the aeropress. It is a manual coffee making device that allows you to use pressure to brew a cup. It involves few minutes of steeping followed by pushing the brew through the coffee grounds. The coffee that we had was much stronger, and denser that the pour-over coffee. But with aeropress, you can brew the mildest cup of coffee too, we were told.

Our next stop was Sly Granny, where we were taken through the live tutorial of making Ibrik, a strong Turkish coffee. The hot and spiced brew is made in a traditional Ibrik vessel. The Turkish prefer not to filter their coffee, and have the residue settled at the bottom of the cup. This residue is traditionally used to predict your day and future by coffee cup reading experts.

In our third pit stop at Civil house, we tried the delicious cappuccino. The milky, foamy and comforting beverage was brewed in machine, containing one-third espresso, one-third steamed milk, and one-third foam.  Here’s another interesting titbit we learned about our coffee in the expedition. Milk was added to coffee much later, as a natural sweetener.  Milk naturally contains mild and sugary components that were meant to balance out the strong tones of coffee. Adding sugar on top of milk is a fairly recent change to our cuppas, not many coffee lovers in the world may approve of!

In our final destination, we were treated with the delicious iced brews of SodaBottleOpenerWala. We tried their signature, star anise and mandarin and hazelnut cold brew. We absolutely loved the sweet, nutty and fruity flavours of star anise and hazelnut cold brew and would not like to make any further additions of milk or sugar to it.

Juan Mata Hails “Exciting” Manchester United Win After Frustrating Run

Juan Mata says Manchester United’s “complete performance” against Fulham was just the tonic for a team that has endured a frustrating start to the season. United started Saturday’s game on a four-match winless streak, leaving them well behind in the race for a top-four Premier League finish, but overpowered bottom club Fulham 4-1 at Old Trafford. Ashley Young, Mata and Romelu Lukaku netted in an impressive first-half display, with Marcus Rashford sealing a 4-1 win after substitute Aboubakar Kamara had reduced the deficit from the spot.

Mata told MUTV the performance and result were “basically what we needed”.

“Good start, good goals, creating a lot of chances, making the fans excited about the game, about our performance,” the Spaniard said.

“We know that we are not in the position that we want to be and should be, so every game I go onto the pitch, or we go onto the pitch, I think about giving everything for the fans and giving a performance like today, so we must face every game like we did today.”

Mata was one of four changes to the line-up following the 2-2 midweek draw with Arsenal and made an important contribution, becoming the third Spanish player to score 50 goals and register 50 assists in Premier League history.

“It’s not bad,” he said. “Fifty and 50. When I came to the Premier League a few years ago I was very excited and very motivated about my period in the Premier League and I am enjoying it so much.

“I am lucky to have been able to score and assist that many goals but I am still hungry for more. I want more assists, more goals, more enjoyment in the pitch, so hopefully I can do (so).”

Khaleel Ahmed An Exciting Prospect, Says Bharat Arun

India crushed the Windies by 224 runs in the fourth One-day International (ODI) to go 2-1 up in the five-match series. Khaleel Ahmed, who took 3 for 13 in the fourth match, starred for India, triggering the West Indies’ collapse in pursuit of a mammoth 378-run target. Ahead of the fifth and final match of the series scheduled to take place on November 1 in Thiruvananthapuram, India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun hailed the effort from the left-arm pacer and termed him an exciting prospect. Arun also mentioned that the fast-bowling strength has never been more exciting and the bench has also strengthened after the inclusion of the 20-year-old.

“Khaleel looks a very exciting prospect. He is sharp and has the skills to do well in international cricket. He is a very exciting prospect,” Arun told reporters ahead of the fifth ODI.

“When we started off, the onus was not only on creating a force to reckon with pace bowling unit for the Indian team, also we needed very good bench strength. To sustain fast bowling over a long period of time, you need to rotate these bowlers. The team management had to monitor the workload,” he explained.

The bowling coach also defended the under-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni, saying he is one of the legends of Indian cricket and would come good.

“He is one of the legends of Indian cricket. His striking ability is for everyone to see. He has done it many a times before. He is extremely experienced and I’m sure given the opportunities, he will come good,” Arun added.

Asked if performance would be given precedence over the ‘Yo-Yo’ fitness test in the light of Ambati Rayudu’s show in the ODI series against West Indies, he said it was mandatory to prove fitness.

Rayudu missed out on the England tour after failing the Yo-Yo test, made a comeback in the ongoing series and has done well so far, including a hundred in the previous match.

“Fitness, with the kind of schedule that we have, is an important part of our focus. The mark that we have kept for people to pass is not every tough. And anyone who is there in the team has to pass the fitness test,” Arun said.

The Indian team had an optional training session ahead of Thursday’s fixture with only a handful of players taking part.

Young southpaw Rishabh Pant along with Rayudu, KL Rahul, Yuzvendra Chahal and Umesh Yadav took part in the session. The Windies, on the other hand, opted not to train.
