Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul Dropped From 1st ODI Against Australia: Sources

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been dropped from the first one-day international (ODI) against Australia which will be played in Sydney on Saturday. Hardik Pandya’s sexist comments sparked social media outrage and prompted the player to apologise. Pandya appeared on a popular TV show with teammate K L Rahul, who was a lot more restrained in his responses to questions on women and relationships. Pandya said he “got a bit carried away” as he explained his bragging about his prowess with women on the show that aired Sunday.

On Thursday, COA chairman Vinod Rai had recommended a two-match ban for the duo.

The recommendation came a day after the 25-year-old Pandya posted his apology on social media.

“After reflecting on my comments on Koffee with Karan, I would like to apologise to everyone concerned who I may have hurt in any way,” Pandya posted on Twitter.

“Honestly, I got a bit carried away with the nature of the show. In no way did I mean to disrespect or hurt anyone’s sentiments. Respect,” he added.

Pandya, who was in the squad that beat Australia for the first time in an away Test series, boasted about his success with multiple women.

“You are just watching and observing how they move as I said I am a little from the black side (influenced by West Indies culture) so I have to see how they (women) move first,” he said.

Pandya also said he had bragged to his parents after losing his virginity.

He was quickly slammed for his views on women.

Later on Thursday, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry called for an inquiry to find out whether or not the two sought permission from the BCCI to appear on the show, and if yes, Chaudhry wants to know who gave them the permission.

“The provisions of the earlier contracts and the practice in place would have required these contracted players to seek permission to appear on the show. Was such a permission sought? Was such a permission granted? If so, by whom?” he asked.

Pandya and Rahul also caused a social media stir for comments on the same show when they said current India skipper Virat Kohli was a better batsman than the country’s cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar.

Author Nayantara Sahgal Dropped From All India Marathi Literary Meet, MNS Chief Raj Thackeray Apologises

Nayantara Sahgal, 91, was to inaugurate the literary meet in Yavatmal on January 11.

Mumbai:

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray said that his party has no objection to noted author Nayantara Sahgal being invited to a literary meet in Maharashtra this week and apologised for “any convenience and strain”. The decision to withdraw the invitation to the writer was taken after threats an MNS worker threatened to disrupt the function, the organisers said on Sunday.

“When in her (Nayantara Sahgal’s) presence, our profound culture and traditions stand unveiled, it can become a medium to exhibit our culture to the rest of the world… We have no objection to Nayantara Sahgal and we wholeheartedly welcome her,” Mr Thackeray said, saying that one of his local party workers had opposed Ms Sahgal’s presence at the meet. Mr Thackeray said that he regretted the annoyance caused to the supporters of such literary events.

Ms Sahgal, 91, was to inaugurate the 92nd edition of the All India Marathi Literary Meet literary meet on January 11 in Yavatmal district. The invitation, however, was withdrawn after threats to disrupt the function if she attended the event.

She was at the forefront of the “award wapsi (return of the award)” campaign by the intelligentsia in 2015.

The literary meet organisers decided to drop Ms Sahgal’s name to “avoid any untoward incident and in view of the controversy that has cropped up against her name”. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too will be part of the event.

The opposition and authors condemned the decision to cancel the celebrated writer’s invite.

Historian Ramachandra Guha tweeted, “The Maharashtra that fears the words of a ninety one year old woman writer is the Maharashtra of Godse and his mentors, not the Maharashtra of Ambedkar, Phule, Gokhale or Tilak.”

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam alleging that it was done at the behest of the ruling BJP. “The decision of the organisers was taken at the behest of the BJP, the MNS is just a front. Literature should not surrender before politics. If a government is scared of writers, it means that its days are over,” he said.

Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs Minister Vinod Tawde, however, said the state welcomed everyone.

“If someone had opposed Sahgal after her speech at the meet, then it could have been understood. It is not fair to oppose her completely. Maharashtra is a state that welcomes everyone to present their work,” he said.

Noted author Aruna Dhere, who will preside over the event, also criticised the organisers for cancelling Ms Sahgal’s invitation. Marathi author Sanjay Awate said he would boycott the literary meet as a mark of protest.

Big Bash League: Best Dropped “Catch Of The Century”, Featuring Brendon McCullum – Watch

Former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum might not have been able to contribute with the bat in the ongoing Big Bash Twenty20 League in Australia, but his fielding remains as brilliant as ever. The 37-year-old pulled off two spectacular efforts in Perth on Saturday and almost claimed what would have been the most unbelievable catch ever. In the 14th over of the BBL match between Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers, McCullum was fielding at long-off and the ball was belted in his direction, looking to be heading for a six. McCullum flew off the ground and tried to garb the ball in his left hand, and it almost looked like he had taken the screamer. But when he landed the ball bounced out. He couldn’t quite cling on to the ball but saved five runs for his team.

Fox Cricket commentator Mel Jones reckoned it could have been the “catch of the century”!

His former national team-mate Jimmy Neesham, who scored 34 runs in an over against Sri Lanka earlier this week, was also impressed.

“Oh my god @Bazmccullum that would’ve been an absolute worldie! Best effort I’ve ever seen from a 37 year old,” Neesham wrote on Twitter.

Earlier, the veteran took a sharp diving catch to remove Cameron Bancroft, then almost bettered it when Mitchell Marsh crashed one towards the boundary.

His captain Chris Lynn told Fox Cricket that McCullum had blamed the stadium lights in his eyes for the spill.

It was a first win in their fourth match for the Daniel Vettori-coached Heat.

McCullum has just 30 runs in four innings for the Heat, at an average of 7.5.

Comic Gursimran Khamba Dropped From New Amazon India Show After #MeToo Allegations

Mumbai:

Comic Gursimran Khamba embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct will no longer be the showrunner for an original series on Amazon.com Inc’s video streaming service, a top Amazon executive said on Wednesday.

Gursimran Khamba, a co-founder of popular comedy collective All India Bakchod (AIB), was accused of sexual misconduct by an anonymous woman on social media last month. She accused him of “emotional blackmail” and of trying to force himself on her. Khamba has denied any wrongdoing.

AIB has since placed Khamba on a temporary leave of absence.

At the time, Khamba was the showrunner and creator of Gormint, a political satire that AIB was producing for Amazon Prime Video along with talent and event management firm Only Much Louder (OML).

‘Gormint’ is a localised form of the word ‘government’.

“Khamba is not attached to the project at this point,” Vijay Subramaniam, director and head of content at Amazon Prime Video India, told Reuters in an interview.

Amazon has so far remained silent on its association with AIB, which has largely suspended activity after the #Metoo campaign.

Tanmay Bhat, another co-founder, has also stepped down from the group after admitting that he continued to work with another colleague in spite of being aware of accusations of sexual misconduct against him.

The #MeToo campaign has shaken India’s entertainment industry. Prime Video’s global rival Netflix Inc was also drawn in after allegations were made against a lead writer of its first India original Sacred Games.

Netflix has since said it conducted an independent probe following which it would continue to work with the writer, Varun Grover.

Subramniam said Amazon was keen to resuscitate the Gormint project.

“We are focused on putting the project back together. It’s an incredibly witty and well-written show, and we remain super excited about being able to bring it to life,” he said.

The show, earlier titled The Ministry, was originally due to star actor Irrfan Khan, one of India’s top exports to Hollywood. Khan pulled out of the show in August, a few months after being diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour.

Amazon launched Prime Video in India in late 2016 and has previously said the South Asian country is its fastest growing Prime Video market in the world.

It has so far launched five original shows in India, with a sixth, gritty crime drama Mirzapur, streaming on the platform from Friday.

“(The challenge) is probably to be moving as fast for our customers as the industry is moving,” Tim Leslie, global vice president at Amazon Global Video, told Reuters.

Fans Burn, Smash Freebies Over Dropped Scenes From Vijay’s Sarkar

Vijay fans lashed out at the ruling AIADMK for their objection.

Chennai:

Video clips of Tamil actor Vijay’s fans recreating a snipped scene from his controversial movie ‘Sarkar’, throwing away freebies, including table fans, of the AIADMK government and setting them ablaze, went viral on the social media on Saturday.

Some young men, claiming to be Vijay’s supporters, uploaded on social media videos of them dumping the fan, mixie and grinder in open spaces and pits and setting them ablaze.

By doing so, they recreated a scene from ‘Sarkar’ which was voluntarily cut by the movie-makers following objection from the AIADMK.

The ‘fans’ also spoke in support of their idol’s movie and lashed out at the ruling AIADMK for their objection.

Vijay’s Deepavali flick ‘Sarkar’ kicked up a row with the ruling AIADMK objecting to scenes that showed freebies being thrown into the fire.

Also, the ruling party had objected to a woman character’s name, which, it said, was a purported reference to late chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

The issue heated up after supporters of the ruling party allegedly tore up banners of ‘Sarkar’ and began targeting movie halls that screened the movie.

Eventually, the movie-makers offered a truce and went in for voluntary cuts of the freebies-trashing scene and muted an objectionable name.

The AIADMK has, however, denied allegation that their party workers tore ‘Sarkar’ banners.

Supporters of Dravidian ideology actively opposed ‘demonetisation’ of freebies in the social media since these were intended to help the marginalised people.

Notably, the main opposition party DMK, which has been targeting the AIADMK government on all issues, refrained from commenting on the row that involved the movie-makers, Vijay’s fans and the ruling party.

On Thursday, the AIADMK was up in arms against ‘Sarkar’ with senior state ministers demanding deletion of the contentious scenes, besides threatening to initiate legal action if the film crew failed to comply.

Law Minister C Ve Shanmugham had said certain scenes amounted to inciting violence and warned of ‘action’.

The AIADMK took strong exception to scenes showing mixer-grinders and fans being burnt, seen as an obvious affront to its flagship scheme of providing these goods free of cost to the people, fulfilling an electoral promise made by Jayalalithaa in 2011.

‘Sarkar’ had earlier courted a row after an aspiring filmmaker claimed that the film’s story was his, following which director Murugadoss went in for a compromise with him.

Produced by Sun Pictures, the film stars Vijay and Keerthi Suresh in key roles with Oscar winner AR Rahman scoring the music.

Vijay’s 2017 film ‘Mersal’ too had courted controversy after BJP objected to some scenes critical of GST, among others.

US Journalist Megyn Kelly’s TV Show Dropped After Blackface Remark

US television journalist Megyn Kelly was a former attorney and Fox News anchor.

New York:

NBC News said Friday it has pulled the plug on US television journalist Megyn Kelly’s morning talk show, after her comments about the use of blackface sparked a major backlash.

“Megyn Kelly Today is not returning,” NBC News reported, citing its own spokesperson.

“Next week, the 9am hour will be hosted by other Today co-anchors.”

The 47-year-old Kelly, a former attorney and Fox News anchor, is in talks about her future at NBC, with unnamed sources quoted by the network itself saying she is likely to leave.

Kelly’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, was quoted as saying that “discussions about next steps are continuing.”

At issue, according to The Hollywood Reporter: the payout of the remainder of her multi-million-dollar contract, and the length of her non-compete clause, which will determine where she could go next.

The cancellation of Kelly’s program was swift.

Just three days ago, during a segment about Halloween costumes, Kelly questioned if blackface — makeup traditionally used by non-black performers to mock African Americans — was always problematic.

“What is racist? Because, truly, you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween,” she said Tuesday.

“When I was a kid, that was OK as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character.”

The comments sparked a quick backlash on social media, calls for Kelly’s resignation and displeasure from her own colleagues.

“While she apologized to the staff, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country,” said veteran NBC weatherman Al Roker, who is black.

On Wednesday, she opened her live show with a mea culpa.

“I’m Megyn Kelly and I want to begin with two words: I’m sorry,” Kelly said.

“I learned that given the history of blackface being used in awful ways by racists in this country, it is not OK for that to be part of any costume, Halloween or otherwise.”

Even before the controversy, Kelly had struggled in the ratings, often losing out to her competitors at ABC, a talk show hosted by Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest.

Kelly earned fame as a longtime anchor for Fox News, notably sparring with Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election campaign.

She left that network early last year and joined NBC. She has accused Fox co-founder Roger Ailes of sexually harassing her. Ailes died in May 2017.

After Test Snub, Mohammad Amir Dropped From T20I Series

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday announced the 15-man squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia and pacer Mohammad Amir was once again given the cold shoulder by the selectors. Amir was dropped from the Test team after a poor outing in the Asia Cup 2018 and the selection committee, headed by Inzamam ul Haq, excluded the 26-year-old from the shortest format of the game as well. Left-arm pacer Waqas Maqsood (yet to play for the national senior team) has been included in the team after good performances in domestic cricket while Imad Wasim, who missed the Asia Cup due to injury, returns to the squad.

“Waqas Maqsood has been drafted in the T20 squad after his recent performances in the domestic cricket and playing for Pakistan ‘A’ team in the recent series. Similarly, Imad Wasim makes a comeback in the team after his form and fitness was monitored by the selection committee during the current domestic matches,” said Chief Selector Inzamam ul Haq.

Pakistan are currently playing a two-match Test series against Australia in the United Arab Emirates. The first match in Dubai ended in a draw while the second match is currently being played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The three-match T20I series against Australia will start on October 24 in Abu Dhabi. The second and third T20I will be played on October 26 and 28 Dubai, respectively.

Pakistan T20I squad: Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Sahibzada Farhan, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, Hussain Talat, Sarfraz Ahmed (captain & wk), Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Usman Khan, Hasan Ali, Imad Wasim, Waqas Maqsood, Faheem Ashraf.
