‘It’s A Learning, Will Help Me Grow As A Director’

Aanand L Rai’s ambitious Zero may have crashed at the box office but the director is not disheartened with the response. The filmmaker views the experience as a lesson learnt. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer, which also featured Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, was billed as one of the biggest films of 2018. “I won’t say I am disappointed. I will need to understand (what went wrong). This is the story I wanted to say and I made it. After making Ranjhaanaa and Tanu Weds Manu and the second one, this film (Zero) was due for me to make… To take a certain flight and I have not landed on it properly,” Aanand L Rai said.

“It’s a learning and it will help me grow as a director. I am not afraid to take risks and experiment,” the filmmaker told PTI when asked if he was disappointed. Zero had Shah Rukh playing the role of a vertically challenged man, Katrina featured as a troubled star while Anushka portrayed a scientist suffering from cerebral palsy. The film released on December 21 and did not receive favourable response, either from audience or critics.

Aanand L Rai was talking on the sidelines of the inauguration of National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC), by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday, developed in the premises of Films Division in South Mumbai. “It feels good when cinema gets this kind of attention and focus. And also when the higher authorities are taking care and giving the due which was always needed. It strengthens us,” he said of the museum.

Swara Bhasker Recounts Sexual Harassment Incident By A Director. ‘Took Years To Realise About It,’ She Says

New Delhi:

Actress Swara Bhasker on Friday said that she was ‘sexually harassed by a director’, but it took her years to realise what exactly had happened, reports news agency PTI. Swara hasn’t named anyone, but added that the harassment happened at work and the director was being “predatory.” “It took me six to eight years to realise when I heard someone else talk about their experience of harassment at a panel discussion like this. I was like God, what happened to me three years ago was actually sexual harassment at workplace! I never realised it because like you said, I escaped. Because the person did not touch me and I managed to ward it off,” Swara said during the sidelines of an event, reports PTI.

“I would just tell myself that this director is being… whatever, but that is not the full truth. The director was not being an idiot or… he was being a predator,” she added.

In 2017, Swara had first opened up about being harassed by a filmmaker during an outdoor shoot and had told Mumbai Mirror that “sexual harassment is a universal phenomenon because fundamentally it is about power or rather the misuse of power.”

Recounting the horror of being stalked and harassed by the director, the Veere Di Wedding actress, who was “fairly new” in the industry at that point, told Mumbai Mirror, “He stalked me during the day and called me through the night. I was asked to go to his hotel room on the pretext of discussing the scene and would find him drinking. During the first week itself, he started talking about love and sex and one night, arrived in my room, drunk, and asked to be hugged. It was scary.”

At the event, Swara also said that she wasn’t able to recognise the pattern of harassment or the behaviour because “as part of our culture a girl child is not taught to recognise a predatory behaviour for what it is.”

“There is so much of culture of silence, around sexuality in India, around the issue of sexual harassment, actually not just In India, everywhere around the world that we are just going through are lives without recognising it properly. We just recognise the discomfort,” Swara said, PTI reports.

Several people from the industry, including actress Tanushree Dutta, have opened up about their #MeToo accounts, in which some of the top artistes have been named and shamed. Swara Bhasker was among the first celebrities to have voiced her support in favour of Tanushree Dutta.

“First of these things is completely inhospitable and hostile society and a culture that actively or sub-consciously enables predators… We should use this moment to not just talk about the one predator that got caught and got glamourised,” Swara said

“But we should also talk about the culture that enables these predators to reach the position of power they do. So, it’s also a question of making ourselves aware of many things that go into legitimising predatory behaviour,” she added.

Swara Bhasker was last seen in Veere Di Wedding, for which she was brutally trolled for a masturbation scene she featured in. She currently features in the web series It’s Not That Simple.

Sports Authority Director Among 6 Arrested By CBI For Alleged Corruption

The sports authority had reportedly sought the CBI’s help in the case.

New Delhi:

The CBI arrested four officials of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) — including its Director — during a raid on the agency’s Lodhi Road office in New Delhi on Thursday. Two other individuals were also taken into custody in the course of the operation.

A CBI team reportedly reached the SAI headquarters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium around 5 pm and sealed the premises. “There were complaints that some officials were taking bribes for approving work,” ANI quoted a source as saying. The sports authority had reportedly asked the CBI to investigate the matter, he added.

According to news agency PTI, the CBI arrested SAI Director SK Sharma, Junior Accounts Officer Harinder Prasad, Supervisor Lalit Jolly and senior official VK Sharma, besides private contractor Mandeep Ahuja and his employee Yunus. It is alleged that the officials were sitting on pending bills of Rs 19 lakh, demanding 3% of the amount as bribe in return for clearing them.

“The matter came to light over six months ago, after which the director general informed the sports minister. The director general wrote to the CBI on the minister’s insistence,” the source said, adding that the accused officials were responsible for procuring office stationery, electronic equipment and furniture for SAI offices.

“There is zero tolerance for corruption in the SAI. We will support any action against corruption,” said SAI director general Neelam Kapoor.

Hours later, Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore posted a video describing the Narendra Modi government’s resolve to free society of corruption. “We came to know a few months ago that some officials of the sports authority were indulging in corruption,” he said in the video post. “We could have ignored the matter, but that would not have solved it. As expected from our government, we gave the case to the appropriate investigation agency. The CBI probed it for a few months before conducting a raid this evening. Some SAI officials have been arrested, and the probe is being taken to its logical conclusion.”

Mr Rathore said his government’s aim was to ensure that sports is not sullied by corruption. “We want to free the sports ministry, every ministry for that matter, of all sorts of corruption. We are committed to making our systems transparent and fair,” he added.

Further details are awaited.

SAI director among 6 arrested by CBI in corruption case

‘Just A Name,’ Claim Priya Prakash Varrier And Director After Controversy Over Sridevi Bungalow

New Delhi:

Malayalam actress Priya Prakash Varrier and her debut Bollywood film Sridevi Bungalow featured in headlines on Monday, after several media reports claimed that filmmaker Boney Kapoor, husband of late actress Sridevi, sent a legal notice to the team, reportedly over the film’s title. In her defence, Priya Prakash Varrier, who became an Internet sensation last year with a wink, told The Times Of India that “Sridevi is just the name of her character” while the film’s director Prashant said it is just a “coincidence that it is based of an actress named Sridevi’s life.” In the film’s defence, Priya said, “Sridevi is just the name of my character in the movie. Who would want to create such controversies? I think the curiosity surrounding the trailer is good and we have to leave it to the audience to judge if the film is based on the veteran actress Sridevi ma’am.”

Going by the trailer of Sridevi Bungalow, the plot of the film revolves around a movie star named Sridevi, who leads a lonely life. It concludes with the death of the actress in a bathtub. Actress Sridevi also died after drowning in a hotel bathtub in Dubai in February 2017.

The TOI report states that in the legal notice sent by Boney Kapoor to the makers of Sridevi Bungalow, the filmmaker has asked them to remove Sridevi’s name from the title and also the other similarities to her life in the film. Of the controversy, director Prashanth TOI, “In the notice, Boney Kapoor has raised a few objections against our film including the usage of the name and doing a biopic of the actress. He wanted us to alter the name of our movie within 24 hours. We sent him a reply explaining that Sridevi was a common name and there was no logic in objecting to it. It is just coincidence that my movie tells the tale of an actress named Sridevi.”

Twitter users have called out Sridevi Bungalow makers for the plot. “This is disgusting” and “how can you show this” are some of the tweets against the film’s trailer.

“Like Priya said, we would like to leave it to the audience to decide. The film is a crime-thriller and it is important to maintain the suspense of the story. I cannot walk around and reveal the plot to all. I am a hardcore fan of actress Sridevi and I respect and admire her a lot. But just because she died in a bath tub doesn’t mean nobody else won’t. Allow us to release the movie and let the people decide,” the director told TOI.

“I am ready to face it as I am very well aware that a biopic cannot be made without permission. It is a story that came to my mind about an actress named Sridevi and certain situations that she faces in London,” he added.

Sridevi Bungalow is currently in the work-in-progress stage and is expected to release in April.

PM-Led Panel To Meet On January 24 To Decide On New CBI Director

The selection panel on Alok Verma met last week.

New Delhi:

A special panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet next week to pick the successor to Alok Verma, whose controversial removal from the top post of the premier Central Bureau of Investigation last week has created a huge political storm.

The decision comes a day after Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to PM Modi, asking him to bring key documents related to the sacking in public domain.

The meeting of the special panel – comprising the prime minister, the Chief Justice of India and the leader of the opposition – will be held on January 24.

It is not known if Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will attend the meeting. He had recused himself from the January 10 meet – where the decision was taken to remove Mr Verma from the post – as he was part of the Supreme Court bench that passed an order reinstating the officer.

The panel had based its decision on a report by the anti-corruption watchdog the Central Vigilance Commission on allegations against Mr Verma.

Mr Kharge, who put up a dissent note flagging how the main allegations against Mr Verma were unsubstantiated, wrote to PM Modi yesterday, asking that the government make the vigilance report public, along with the one by Justice AK Patnaik, who monitored the investigation. The report had been submitted to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover.

Alok Verma was removed from the CBI top post last Thursday, barely 48 hours after he was reinstated by the Supreme Court. The official, who was retiring by the end of this month, quit the next day, refusing to take charge as the Chief of Fire Services.

PM-Led Selection Panel to meet on January 24 to decide on new CBI director
