Day After Mega Opposition Rally, Shatrughan Sinha Explains Its Real Goal

Shatrughan Sinha spoke at the rally as a representative of Yashwant Sinha’s party (File)

New:

A day after attending West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rally for the anti-BJP politicians in Kolkata, BJP lawmaker Shatrughan Sinha said the parties gathered for a “common cause of saving the Indian democracy from being ruined”. The parliamentarian from Patna Sahib– who has been making savage attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi– thanked the Trinamool chief for bringing the opposition parties on the same platform

BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha on Saturday stepped up his attack on the centre over the controversial Rafale fighter jet deal and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi must answer a few questions else he will have to hear “chowkidaar chor hai (the watchman is a thief)”.

After the rally, BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the party has taken “cognizance” of Mr Sinha’s presence at the rally.

Today, Mr Sinha renewed his attack, saying the rally had only one agenda– “Free India of Arrogance and Dictatorial Governance”.

“What an amazing gathering and what a mammoth audience that came together in Bengal in lakhs to listen to and support this spontaneous show of solidarity in favour of a change…parivartan!” he tweeted.

“Kudos to our sister, the great lady of Bengal, the fiery Mamata di, who needs to be roundly complimented for bringing together one of the largest congregations of the strongest and most influential political minds and leaders from all corners of the country on the same stage under a common cause…of saving the Indian democracy from being ruined…” he added.

Leaders of 22 opposition parties came together in Kolkata on Saturday as a show of strength at the rally, organised by Ms Banerjee. AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal, TDP’s Chandrababu Nadu, SP’s Akhilesh Yadav, DMK’s MK Stalin were among the attendees. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and BSP leader Mayawati gave the rally a skip, but they sent their representatives.

Shatrughan Sinha was a union minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He had contested and won the Lok Sabha polls on a BJP ticket from Patna Sahib in 2014, but grew apart from the top leadership after being ignored for a ministerial berth. Over the years, he has been attacking PM Modi. His most recent dig at the party was when he came out in favour of setting up a Joint Parliamentary Committee to look into alleged financial irregularities in the Rafale deal, a vehement demand made by the opposition parties led by the Congress.

Indian Missions Abroad Say Pro-Khalistan Group May Disrupt Republic Day Events

A separatist pro-Khalistan group plans to disrupt the flag-hoisting ceremony in US and Canada. (File)

Chandigarh:

Indian missions in the United States and Canada have sought security arrangements from local police and authorities as a separatist pro-Khalistan group plans to disrupt the flag-hoisting ceremony during the 70th Republic Day functions.

Sources said security has been sought for official functions to be held across cities in the US and Canada.

In the US, functions have been planned in Washington, New York, Houston, San Francisco, Chicago and Atlanta. Similar functions have been planned in Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto in Canada. Toronto and Vancourver is home to a large number of Indians, especially from Punjab and the Sikh community.

A statement issued by the separatist group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), from its New York headquarters through its legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, said it will honour the pro-Khalistan Sikhs who will disrupt the hoisting of the Indian tricolor.

The SFJ is considered a Sikh separatist group by intelligence agencies which is demanding the creation of Khalistan as a separate territory for Sikhs.

In recent years, the SFJ has increased its separatist activities in US, Canada and Britain.

In December last year, the SFJ put up separatist posters and hoardings of ‘Referendum 2020’ in Pakistan when Indian pilgrims went to Nankana Sahib town to celebrate the 549th birth anniversary of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had ordered a crackdown on the outfit amid “complaints by people of deliberate attempts to vitiate the state’s atmosphere”.

5 Luxury Cars Missing From Workshop In Delhi’s Nangloi Ahead Of Republic Day

New Delhi:

Five luxury cars are missing from an automobile workshop at Nangloi in west Delhi. Senior Delhi Police officers say, several teams have been formed to find the vehicles. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

The high profile theft assumes significance as it comes just a week ahead of Republic Day, when security is heightened across the national capital region.

The five vehicles, which have gone missing, include a Volkeswagen Polo, Honda Amaze, Force Gurkha, Ford Ecosport and Mitshubishi Pajero.

The police are analysing a CCTV video from the area, which apparently shows five men, who came and jumpstarted the cars and sped away.

The owner of the workshop, who has been identified as one Praveen Kumar, said that six cars were parked for repair, when he left the night before the theft. But the following day when he came to the workshop, five of the vehicles were missing.

Reports suggest that the owner of the Force Gurkha is the son of a senior defence ministry official.

On Kolkata Mega Rally Day, Sonia Gandhi’s Message To United Opposition

Mallikarjun Kharge read out a message sent by Sonia Gandhi who wished the opposition rally

Kolkata:

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi Saturday wished the opposition rally all the success and said the upcoming Lok Sabha polls will be an election to restore the nation’s faith in democracy and fight the “arrogant and divisive” Narendra Modi government.

Sonia Gandhi and her son, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, decided to give the rally in Kolkata a miss, but had sent party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Abhishek Manu Singhvi in a show of solidarity to the gathering organised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Mr Kharge read out a message sent by Sonia Gandhi who wished the opposition rally all the success.

“The upcoming Lok Sabha elections will not be ordinary one. It will be an election to restore the nation’s faith in democracy, defend our secular ethos and heritage, and defeat the forces that are trying to sabotage the Constitution of India,” she said in her message.

Sonia Gandhi described the opposition rally as an “important attempt to galvanise leaders across the political spectrum to fight the arrogant and divisive Modi-rule”.

“I wish them all the success,” she said.

Sonia Gandhi said a crisis looms over the country’s farmers and extends to the borders, adding the youth are jobless and fishermen are incurring deep losses.

The country, at large, is “under immense strain”, she said, claiming citizens have been screeched economically, institutions have been undermined politically and the pluralistic fabric has been vitiated.
Rahul Gandhi Friday had extended his support to Mamata Banerjee for her “show of unity” and hoped it would send a powerful message of a united India.

Scientists Finally Know How Long A Day Is On Saturn

This was unknown till now because Saturn was hidden in the rings.

Washington:

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has revealed that a day on Saturn is just over 10 and-a-half-hours-long, a finding that solved a long-standing mystery of solar system science.

Using new data from the now extinct Cassini mission, scientists led by the University of California-Santa Cruz found that a year on Saturn is 29 Earth years. The day only lasts 10 hours, 33 minutes and 38 seconds.

This was unknown till now because it was hidden in the rings.

Christopher Mankovich, a graduate student in astronomy and astrophysics at the varsity, analysed the wave patterns within the rings.

The findings showed that they respond to vibrations within the planet itself, acting similarly to the seismometers used to measure movement caused by earthquakes.

The inside of Saturn vibrates at frequencies that cause variations in its gravitational field. The rings, in turn, detect those movements in the field.

“Particles throughout the rings can’t help but feel these oscillations in the gravity field,” Mr Mankovich said.

“At specific locations in the rings these oscillations catch ring particles at just the right time in their orbits to gradually build up energy, and that energy gets carried away as an observable wave.”

His research, published in the Astrophysical Journal, describes how he developed models of Saturn’s internal structure that would match the rings’ waves.

That allowed him to track the movements of the interior of the planet, and thus its rotation.

Unlike Jupiter and Earth’s magnetic axis that are not aligned with its rotational axis, Saturn is different. Its unique magnetic field is nearly perfectly aligned with its rotational axis.

This is why the ring finding has been key to homing in on the length of a day.

“The researchers used waves in the rings to peer into Saturn’s interior, and out popped this long-sought, fundamental characteristic of the planet. And it’s a really solid result,” said Cassini Project Scientist Linda Spilker. “The rings held the answer.”

Cassini spacecraft, when low on fuel, made a fateful plunge into the atmosphere of Saturn on September 15, 2017, ending its 13-year tour of the ringed planet.
