Rajasthan Elections Result 2018 live coverage rajasthan vidhan sabha chunav parinam bjp congress

Saudis Call For Amazon Boycott Over Washington Post Coverage On Jamal Khashoggi Death

Saudis who are angry at The Washington Post’s coverage of the kingdom in the aftermath of Jamal Khashoggi’s murder are calling for a boycott of Amazon.com Inc. because of its shared ownership by U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos.

“Boycott Amazon” was the top trending hashtag on Twitter in Saudi Arabia for several hours on Sunday, as users circulated images showing the deletion of the Amazon smartphone app. They also called for a boycott of regional subsidiary Souq.com, acquired by Amazon last year. Neither Amazon nor The Washington Post were immediately available for comment.

Many citizens have felt that their country is under attack since Saudi agents killed Khashoggi, a Post columnist and insider turned critic, at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul. They’ve been particularly upset by an op-ed article by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently published in the Post, and by the newspaper’s coverage – along with other international media – of gruesome information about the murder obtained from anonymous Turkish officials.

“It became clear before our eyes that this is an organized media war,” said Bandar Otyf, a Saudi journalist with more than 100,000 Twitter followers who was among those calling for the boycott. “As Twitter users and activists and citizens, we don’t have power abroad, but we have simple things like boycotting.”

Many Saudis are learning for the first time that Bezos, the founder and chairman of Amazon, separately owns the Washington Post, Otyf said, adding that “if we affect even a portion of their business, we’re satisfied.”

While few in Saudi Arabia use Amazon directly, Souq.com is popular. Last year, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund invested in a competing e-commerce firm called Noon, which was founded by the chairman of Emaar Properties.

Some tweets about the boycott appeared to be automated or copied and pasted.

“I was so excited for Black Friday! But unfortunately since #Washingtonpost is double standards against my country #saudiArabia and support propaganda of Erdogan I decide to stop any plans to buy anything in @amazon,” one such tweet read. It was repeated eight times on different accounts with the same spelling errors. Efforts to contact users behind those accounts weren’t successful.

Anil Ambanis Reliance Sues NDTV For Rafale Coverage, Ravish Kumars Blog

Anil Ambani’s Reliance Sues NDTV For 10,000 Crores For Rafale Coverage

NDTV has been sued for 10,000 crores by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group in a court in Ahmedabad for its reportage on the Rafale fighter jet deal. The hearing has been listed for October 26th and NDTV will argue that the charges of defamation are nothing more than a heavy-handed attempt by Anil Ambani’s group to suppress the facts and prevent the media from doing its job – asking questions about a defence deal and seeking answers that are very much in public interest.

The lawsuit is filed against NDTV’s weekly show, Truth vs Hype, which aired on September 29. Top executives of Reliance ignored repeated, multiple and written requests to appear on the show or comment on what is being widely discussed not just in India but in France as well – whether Anil Ambani’s Reliance was transparently chosen as the partner for Dassault in a deal that saw India buying 36 fighter jets.

Remember that just days before this show aired, the role of Reliance appeared to have been questioned by none other than Francois Hollande, who was the president of France when the deal was struck. The NDTV show reported all sides of the story including Dassault’s denial that it had been under any pressure to select Reliance. The panellists, in a balanced discussion, examined whether issues like Reliance’s vast debt and record in defence manufacturing made it a suitable choice for Dassault in India.

As the Rafale deal has become a larger news story in India, the Reliance group has been on a notice-serving spree; to sue a news company for 10,000 crores in a court in Gujarat on false and frivolous charges, ignoring facts that are widely reported everywhere and not just by NDTV, can only be interpreted as an unsophisticated warning to the media to stop doing its job.

NDTV outright rejects any charges of defamation and will present material in court to support its case. As a news organisation, we are committed to independent and fair journalism that uncovers the truth.

India vs West Indies 2nd Test Live Cricket Match When And Where To Watch IND vs WI Telecast, Live Streaming, Coverage Online

After outplaying the Windies in the first Test, confident team India will aim for a clean sweep when they take on the visitors in the second and final Test starting from Friday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, in Hyderabad. India thrashed the inexperienced Windies team, winning the first Test by an innings and 272 runs inside three days. Skipper Virat Kohli and his team will once again look to overpower the visitors, which is unlikely to put up a challenge against the No 1 Test side in their own backyard. India are likely to stick to the same playing eleven as India announced the same 12-member team for the second Test. The only cause of concern for the Indian team management will be the form of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who failed to fire in the first Test. On the other hand, the West Indies will have to come out with something special to challenge the confident Indian team. Batsmen for the visitors succumbed to the Indian bowlers in Rajkot as the team failed to touch the 200-run mark in both the innings. The Caribbean batsmen will have to show patience in Hyderabad, unlike the last Test where they seemed to be in a hurry to leave the pitch with unwanted shots. A major relief for the visitors will be the return of pacer Kemar Roach and all rounder Jason Holder, who were not in the playing XI for the first Test.

Rohit Sharma’s Team India, who outclassed Pakistan by eight wickets on Wednesday, will look to up the ante when they take on resilient Bangladesh, who have a penchant for punching above their weight, as the two teams meet in the opening Asia Cup 2018 Super Four encounter in Dubai on Friday. For India, the worry will be the team combination as Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the tournament owing to back spasms and Bhuvneshwar Kumar might be rested after back-to-back games against Hong Kong and Pakistan. Young left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed may come in place of Bhuvneshwar but it is still not clear as to who would be Pandya’s replacement. Deepak Chahar has been named as the replacement player but it is unlikely that he will be drafted straightaway into the playing XI. (Play fantasy league and win cash daily)
