VVS Laxman’s 281 At Eden Gardens Saved My Career, Says Sourav Ganguly

Ganguly even went on to state that the book should have been named “281 And Beyond, and saved Sourav Ganguly’s career.”

“The title of the book is not right. It should have been 281 and beyond, and saved Sourav Ganguly’s career,” Ganguly said in his opening address along with pace ace Zaheer Khan by his side.

“If he had not scored 281, we would have lost the game,” Ganguly said. On the back of the match-fixing scandal, Indian cricket was in doldrums when Australia came calling in 2001. In the first Test in Mumbai, the mighty Aussies under Steve Waugh registered a thumping 10-wicket win to make it 16 consecutive victories.

Heading into the second Test at the Eden Gardens, India were staring at a crisis. Waugh’s first hundred in India helped the team to 445 all out. The highlight for India was Harbhajan Singh, who became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick as he took 7/123.

India were bowled out for 171, with Laxman, who was not supposed to play the match due to a back injury, making 59 as India trailed by 274 runs.

In the second innings, they had reached 232/4 before Laxman, along with Rahul Dravid (180), stitched together a partnership that would change the course of not only the match, but also Indian cricket.

“After tea on the last day, I started to believe we could win the Test,” Laxman said when quizzed when did he start sniffing that an improbale win was on the cards.

“That win at the Eden Gardens not only helped Indian cricket but also taught us life lessons. We should never give up, always try to find a solution to everything.

“The substitute Hemang Badani took a blinder at forward short leg, Sachin took three wickets…the feeling after the Kolkata and Chennai Test were the best, and I have never felt like that again,” said the stylish right-hander who played 134 tests amassing 8781 runs at 45.97.

Laxman also said not being picked for the 2003 World Cup was the lowest phase in his career and he contemplated quitting the game after that.

“It was the lowest phase in my career. I was with the India A team during that time and closely followed the Indian team’s fortunes. I did not want to go for the India A tour but my father pushed me. Later, I went to the US to spend time with my friends there and I thought then that I would not play again.

“I realised after two weeks that I was missing hitting the cricket ball. Later, I thought that I was being childish. Playing so for 16 years for the country and being part of the No.1 Test side is also satisfying,” said the 44-year old who donned the national colours in 86 ODIs scoring 2338 runs at 30.76 with six centuries.

Ganguly, who captained India to the 2003 World Cup final in South Africa where they lost to Ricky Ponting’s Australia in the final, said it might have been a mistake dropping Laxman from the squad.

“I would have had VVS in every team. As a captain, you take decisions which are not right and wrong. It could have been a mistake. He would have got runs in any format. He is that kind of a player. If he made the team, we would not have been weaker,” Ganguly said.

Laxman made a stupendous comeback and scored a jaw-dropping century against Australia in Gwalior.

He followed it up with three more centuries in the triangular series, involving Australia and Zimbabwe. The right-hander turned out to be the second-highest run scorer in the series after Adam Gilchrist with 443 runs in 10 matches.

Richard Madley Recalls His IPL Career Highlight And It Involves MS Dhoni

Richard Madley was the auctioneer for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 10 years. However, the Welshman Madley was “dropped” from the forthcoming IPL auction by the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) which is slated to take place on December 18 in Jaipur. Madley recently tweeted that he has not been invited to auction the IPL this year and it was not his decision. He also said that in cricketing terms he was dropped. As soon as he made the announcement of Twitter fans from all over India replied him to say that they will miss him.

One of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans also took the chance to ask Madley about his favourite moment from the lucrative IPL.

Madley to this replied that selling former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the inaugural edition of the league was his career highlight.

For the upcoming IPL auctions, flamboyant Australian batsmen Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch had opted out, largely owing to Australia’s hectic schedule in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup, according to reports by ESPNcricinfo.

Among the Indians, Yuvraj Singh – after a dismal IPL 2018 – will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1 crore. And Mohammad Shami, Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha – who has been out of the Indian team due to a streak of injuries – also enter the auction with a Rs 1 crore base price.

Another Indian cricketer who deserves notable mention is Jaydev Unadkat, who will enter the auction with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore. Unadkat was surprisingly the most expensive Indian in last year’s IPL, having been bought for Rs 11.5 crore by the Rajasthan Royals.

Bihar Due to Tej Pratap yadav affectd Tejashwi yadav Political career

Usain bolt ends career with Central coast mariners

Central coast mariners saying farewells to Bolt

Australian Cricketer John Hastings Puts Career On Hold After Coughing Up Blood

Australian all-rounder John Hastings, former captain of the Big Bash League franchise Melbourne Stars, has decided to put his career on hold due to serious health concerns. Hastings, who signed for the Sydney Sixers in May, has revealed he’s been coughing up blood and will not take the field until his health condition is addressed by doctors.

In an interview with cricket.com.au, Hastings said, “It’s something that, over probably the last three or four months, has been a really difficult period for me. It’s basically every time I’ve been trying to gear up and get ready to bowl, I’ve been coughing up blood.

“What’s happened is basically I won’t be able to bowl this year or probably moving forward unless this sort of situation gets sorted out.”

Further talking about his frame of mind in such tough times, he said, “It’s pretty shattering. I’ve come to terms with it now, but over the last four or five months it’s been a very, very tough period. I’ve played this game my whole life and I wanted to keep playing it.

“I wanted to play tournaments all around the world. That’s one of the reasons I retired early from one-day and four-day cricket. To see it maybe slipping away, it’s pretty tough to take. At this stage, unless something miraculous happens, I won’t be able to bowl.”

Hastings has represented Australia in 29 ODIs but has played only one Test, against South Africa at Perth back in 2012. His last appearance for the Aussies was in June 2017 against New Zealand, when he had proved to be expensive for the bowling department by giving away 69 runs in nine overs.

He has also been a known name in the Indian Premier League, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Kochi Tuskers and the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings.

He has also taken part in the Pakistan Super League as an important part of the Quetta Gladiators set-up. His last T20 outing was for the Gladiators against Multan Sultans in March this year.

Chris Gayle Ends His List-A Career With Century Against Barbados

Explosive Windies opener Chris Gayle ended his List-A career with Jamaica on a high note, slamming a century in his final match against Barbados in a Regional Super 50 clash at Bridgetown on Saturday. Speaking on his performance, the ‘Universe  Boss’ said that he would always cherish the hundred and thanked his teammates for electing him as captain in his final match. Gayle smashed 122 runs that came off 114 balls, helping Jamaica secure a 33-run win over Barbados.

After winning the toss Barbados put Jamaica into bat but the team got off to a poor start. Top order batsmen Chadwick Walton (5) and Jermaine Blackwood (2) departed early, leaving their side with 21 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets.

But Gayle, at the other end, stood solid, stitching a partnership of 131 runs with Andre McCarthy (48) for the third wicket. After the departure of McCarthy, Gayle batted responsibly with the lower-order, helping Jamaica post a competitive total of 226 all out in 47.4 overs. During his 122-run knock, Gayle smashed 10 boundaries and eight towering sixes.

While chasing 226, Barbados lost wickets at regular intervals and ended up 33 runs short of the target. Gayle marshalled his troops brilliantly, helping Jamaica secure a win.

Gayle was awarded the Man of the Match award for his century in the low-scoring encounter.

The Jamaican opener played a total of 356 List A matches, scoring 12,436 runs at an average of 38.14.

Gayle has represented the Windies in 284 ODIs, scoring 9,727 runs at an average of 37.12. Gayle has 23 hundreds in ODIs for the Windies.

In the Test format, Gayle has played 103 matches for the Windies with a high score of 333 runs.
