BJP Loses Big Vote Share, But Not All To Congress

BJP’s vote share has taken a sharp dip in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

New Delhi:

With the BJP suffering losses in three key states, its vote share has taken a sharp dip in ChHattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh since the last assembly elections in 2013, but all these votes do not seem to have gone to the Congress alone as other players have also been benefited.

The vote share loss is even bigger for the saffron party since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in which it had virtually swept all the three states by winning 62 out of 65 seats, as per the Election Commission data.

In Telanagana and Mizoram, it is the regional parties who have come out with flying colours, a post-2014 trend clearly visible in many states with sizeable presence of non-BJP and non-Congress parties.

Political pundits said this trend indicates that the regional satraps might play key roles in 2019 general elections for which attempts are already underway by non-BJP parties to put a united front against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bid for a second term.

For Chattisgarh, the latest data showed the Congress getting 43.2 per cent votes in this elections, up from 40.3 per cent in the 2013 state polls and 38.37 per cent in the 2014 general elections, where the party won only one out of 11 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

In comparison, the BJP’s loss has been wider with its vote share dipping from 41 per cent in 2013 to 32.9 per cent now. In 2014 general elections, the party had got nearly 49 per cent vote and 10 out of the 11 Lok Sabha seats.

The voting share analysis shows that some smaller parties and independents have managed to get more votes. While BSP had got 4.3 per cent in 2013, its alliance with former chief minister Ajit Jogi’s party has now got about 10.7 per cent votes.

Independents have also improved their performance from 5.3 per cent to 6.3 per cent.

Similar trend was visible in Rajasthan where BJP’s votes have fallen from 45.2 per cent in 2013 to 38.8 per cent now. It was much higher at nearly 55 per cent in 2014, when the party won all 25 Lok Sabha seats from the state.

On the other hand, the Congress has improved its vote share from 33.1 per cent in 2013 to 39.2 per cent in 2018. It had managed to get nearly 30 per cent votes despite losing on all seats in last parliamentary elections.

Independents have improved their assembly tally from 8.2 per cent to 9.5 per cent, while bagging larger number of seats.

The vote share situation is the most interesting in Madhya Pradesh, which saw the closest fight between the Congress and the BJP. The Congress’ share has improved from 36.4 per cent in 2013 to 41.4 per cent in 2018 assembly polls, while that of the BJP has come down from 44.9 per cent to 41.3 per cent, as per the latest update.

The BSP’s share here has actually fallen to 4.6 per cent, while that of the independents has remained nearly same at over 5 per cent. However, some other smaller parties have made gains.

In Telangana, the TRS is returning to power with a bigger mandate and a rise in its vote share from nearly 34 per cent last time to about 47 per cent. The Congress has also improved from 25.2 per cent to 28.7 per cent, though its newly-found ally TDP, which was earlier with BJP, has taken a beating.

BJP’s vote share has remained almost static at about 7 per cent since last assembly elections in 2014. However, its vote share has come down from 10.4 per cent in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Mizoram is the only state where the Congress has lost its vote share and the BJP has gained. However, the winner there is a third player, the Mizo National Front, which has returned to power with a clear majority by ousting the only Congress government left in the North-East.

The Congress vote share has come down from nearly 45 per cent in 2013 to just about 30 per cent, while that of BJP has risen five-fold from 0.4 per cent to 8 per cent.

The MNF has improved from 28.8 per cent to 37.6 per cent, while its seat tally has risen from five to 26. The Congress seats have come down from 34 to five, while the BJP has won its maiden assembly seat in the state.

While the vote share data for 2018 polls was still being updated by the poll panel, the final figures are expected to remain around these levels.

Assembly Election Results 2018: Losing Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh Big Setback For Amit Shah

Australia’s Big Bash League Swaps Coin Toss For Bat Flip

Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), in a first, has opted to swap the traditional coin toss with bat flip. The BBL, which is slated to get underway from December 19, will see the new initiative being taken for the first time in it’s 2018-19 edition. Cricket Australia’s head of the BBL said that it’s a great moment for the league and he would like to challenge people by saying when was the last time they saw a bat flip come into play.

“For me it’s a great moment which reflects what BBL is about,” Kim McConnie, Cricket Australia’s head of the Big Bash League said on the competition’s website.

“Some people don’t like change but I’d also challenge people to say when was the last time anyone watched the coin toss or really focused on it to a great extent?

“Now we are making it much more relevant to families, we are creating a moment which is much more fitting with kids.”

Australia’s Twenty20 BBL has steadily gained traction since it was launched eight years ago with the fast-paced, family-friendly competition attracting big crowds and strong television ratings.

It has always tried to innovate and was the tournament that first introduced Zings flashing stumps, which light up when the bails are dislodged.

They are now are used in international matches.

McConnie dismissed concerns over the fairness of the bat-flipping process.

“I’ve got it from great authority at our (bat-maker) Kookaburra friends that this is a tested and weighted bat to deliver that equity,” she said.

The new BBL season will run till February 17, featuring eight teams. Adelaide Strikers are the defending champions.

At Key Opposition Meet Tomorrow, Arvind Kejriwal’s Big Debut

Chandrababu Naidu and Arvind Kejriwal have already met a couple of times in the past.

New Delhi:

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal will attend his first meeting with opposition leaders in Chandrababu Naidu’s big push for a grand alliance for 2019 tomorrow, sources have told NDTV. Mr Naidu, who has taken up the challenging task of bringing the parties on the same page to take on the BJP next year, has recently ended his long-standing rivalry with the Congress.

Mr Kejriwal has been invited by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and the meeting is about a strategy for 2019 and not neccessarily an alliance, AAP sources told NDTV.

“It is for people to sink their differences… Democracy is important,” maintains Mr Naidu, who walked out of the NDA earlier this year after his demand for special status for his state remained unmet by the government.

Mr Kejriwal, one of the key opposition leaders who had been outspoken against the government, was present at the oath ceremony of HD Kumaraswamy, which turned out to be the first unofficial meet to discuss a grand alliance for 2019. But there was no show of bonhomie between him and the other established leaders.

His newcomer status in politics was seen as part of the reason. There was also his frayed relationship with the Congress.

rahul kejriwal split

Arvind Kejrwal and Rahul Gandhi were seen on a stage together at a farmers’ protest rally last month.

Mr Kejriwal had formed his first government in 2013 with outside support from the Congress. But it came to a rapid end after 49 days. Since then, the state Congress leaders had not spared him. Even in 2018 (when) his eight-day face-off with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal had brought messages of support and congratulations from other political leaders, the state Congress, which ruled for three terms under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit, had continued its attack on the Chief Minister.

In August, during the election of the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, the two parties moved further apart. The AAP was miffed that Congress chief Rahul Gandhi did not call and ask for their support for the voting on the floor of the House.

Mr Kejriwal boycotted the election. His party’s senior leader Sanjay Singh said, “If Rahul Gandhi can hug Narendra Modi, why cannot he ask Arvind Kejriwal for support to his party’s candidate?”

Last month, the farmers’ protest in Delhi brought Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal on the same stage for the first time.

But Mr Singh has pointed out that there has been no initiative from either party for an alliance. “First, there should be talks (between the two sides) and an initiative to actually know if we are comfortable together or not,” he said.

Mr Naidu said political parties have to set aside their differences and work as a team if they have to defeat the BJP next year. He also said while it is difficult to bring everybody on the same page, it is not impossible.

Chandrababu Naidu, who ended his decades-long rivalry with the Congress recently, admits that one or two parties may have a difference of opinion. But “It is for people to sink their differences… Democracy is important”

Harmanpreet Kaur continues to make headlines as she wreaked havoc during a Women’s Big Bash League clash between Sydney Thunder Women and Brisbane Heat Women at the North Sydney Oval on Sunday. Coming in to bat at No.3, Harmanpreet smashed her way to a 26-ball 56, a knock that comprised six boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 215.38. The blitzkrieg ensured Sydney Thunder eventually beat Brisbane Heat by 28 runs. A video of the knock was posted on Twitter by Cricket Australia. Watch:

Harmanpreet had recently extended her association with Sydney Thunder and will continue to represent them while Smriti Mandhana had been lapped up the by Hobart Hurricanes. Harmanpreet was the top scorer for Thunder in the second season. She had amassed 296 runs from 12 innings with an average of 59.20 and was adjudged Thunder’s Player of the Tournament during that edition. Mandhana, on the other hand, previously appeared for Brisbane Heat in the second edition of the WBBL.

Harmanpreet has also been in the news for her widely discussed tiff with Mithali Raj. The T20 captain had dropped Mithali for the ICC World T20 semi-final against England, which India went on to lose. The move raised eyebrows in cricketing circles, subsequently snowballing into a controversy that dragged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Committee of Administrators into the exchange.

Flipkart’s Big Sale Kicks Off With Deals on Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, Poco F1, Pixel 3, Motorola One Power, and More

The Flipkart Big Shopping Days sale has just kicked off for Flipkart Plus members. The sale will open up for everyone else shortly I.e. at midnight on Thursday. The Flipkart sale brings back some of the best deals from the festive season sales held earlier this year and a few new offers as well. Flipkart has tied up with HDFC Bank to offer 10 percent instant discount to the bank’s credit and debit card users. In case you missed out during the festive season sales, here’s another opportunity to grab some exciting deals before the end of this year.

The Flipkart Big Shopping Days sale includes a large number of deals on mobile phones, electronics, appliances, and more. But not all of them are worth your time and money. We’ve scanned through a lot of these deals to get you the best deals that are available right now.

Here’s our pick for the best deals available on the first day of Flipkart Big Shopping Days sale so far:

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1
The ZenFone Max Pro M1 has gone on sale every single time Flipkart has organized a sale this year since the phone was launched. Currently available at a starting price of Rs. 9,999 (MRP Rs. 10,999), the ZenFone Max Pro M1 promises a value-for-money deal. We’d recommend you get the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage variant that’s down to Rs. 13,999 (MRP Rs. 14,999) during the Flipkart sale if you’re keen on playing most modern games. The phone ships with a 5.99-inch full-HD+ display and a dual camera setup at the rear and is powered by the Snapdragon 636 SoC. It includes a massive 5,000mAh battery that should be good enough to last an entire day. It’s worth mentioning here that the ZenFone Max Pro M2 is set to launch in India next week, but if you’re not too keen on spending full price on a new phone, this may still be a good option.

Price: Starting from Rs. 9,999

Poco F1
In case you missed the festive season sales, you’ve got another chance to grab the Xiaomi Poco F1 at a discount. All variants of the phone are currently available at a discount during the Flipkart sale. The 6GB RAM, 64GB storage variant is down to Rs. 19,999 (MRP Rs. 21,999) while the 8GB RAM, 256GB storage option is available at Rs. 25,999 (MRP Rs. 30,999). If you’re looking for high-end specifications at a decent enough price, the Poco F1 is a great pick. When we tested the Poco F1, we found it offered a great battery life and an excellent value for money, but the camera struggles when it comes to low-light photos.

Price: Starting from Rs. 19,999

Google Pixel 3 64GB
Flipkart is offering a discount of Rs. 4,500 on the Google Pixel 3 64GB. You can get another instant discount worth up to Rs. 14,900 when you swap your old smartphone with the purchase. Price: Starting from Rs. 24,900

In case you missed out, this is another opportunity. The sixth-generation iPad supports Apple Pencil and is powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion chip. This is the Wi-Fi-only version though.

Price: Rs. 23,999 (MRP Rs. 28,000)

Phil Foden Kept Waiting For His Big Chance At Man City

But the manager’s positive words about the England Under-21 international have yet to translate into a big chance in a really big game.

Foden has made six starts for the club — two in Champions League matches that effectively had nothing riding on them, three in the League Cup and one in this season’s Community Shield. All 12 of his Premier League appearances have come as a substitute.

It appeared as if Foden might get his opportunity on Tuesday, when City travelled to Lyon needing a point to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Guardiola, needing to pick a team without the injured Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, said in his pre-match press conference that Foden was “definitely ready”.

Yet when the teamsheet was released, Foden was only among the substitutes as Guardiola decided to use Raheem Sterling out of position in a reshaped midfield — Foden was given just 92 seconds of action as an injury-time replacement for Sergio Aguero in the 2-2 draw.

The implication was clear — for all Foden’s talent, Guardiola did not think the young midfielder was ready to face opponents that press as aggressively as Lyon.

Pep praise

At least, though, there have been some reassuring words from the manager.

“It is not important if he is the star of some minutes or a lot of minutes,” said Guardiola. “He is part of the squad. It’s about my decisions. He is ready to play, of course.

“He can start in any competition or any games. He is ready. After that, he has to compete with his teammates and sometimes it is not possible, but he is ready.”

To those who have followed his career closely, Foden has looked ready for some time. He scored a sublime individual goal in what ended up as an FA Youth Cup final defeat by Chelsea in April 2017 and six months later he earned the Golden Ball award for the best player at the Under-17 World Cup.

When he scored his first senior goal for City in a 3-0 League Cup victory at League One side Oxford in September, opposing manager Karl Robinson compared him to retired Spanish international Andres Iniesta.

Yet winning a place in a Manchester City team packed with some of the world’s best players is tough. Jadon Sancho, a youth-team contemporary of Foden’s, decided that fight was not winnable and left for Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

Sancho is not a regular starter in Germany but has made enough of an impression to win three full England caps. Can Foden match that by staying in Manchester?

Guardiola thinks so, if the midfielder does the basics right. “He’s a young player,” the City manager said. “He has to make his own career, and go step by step. Don’t pay too much attention to the media. Train as well as possible. Play as well as possible. Then your career will speak for itself.”
