Asha Worker Climbs Tower During Protest In Bhopal, Falls With A Thud

Two policewomen who tried to bring her down also fell off the tower.

Bhopal:

An Asha (Accredited Social Health Activist) worker got injured after she fell off a mobile tower in Bhopal during a protest to demand regularisation of pay. The police were trying to bring her down from the mobile tower, barely 200 metres from Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s home, when two policewomen also got injured.

Around 3,000 Asha and Usha (Urban Social Health Activist) workers from across the state have been protesting outside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s home since Tuesday.

Congress leader Shobha Ojha attacked the chief minister over the protest and said that these women have been camping outside his home for more than 24 hours but “he doesn’t even have five minutes to listen to their demands”.

But BJP spokesperson Rahul Kothari claimed that their salaries were doubled about a week ago.

At around 3 pm, one of the protesters climbed the mobile tower. Three policewomen followed her to bring her down. After arguing at a height of around 30 feet, the cops reportedly tried to drag her down during which Reena, the protester, along with two constables lost balance and fell off the tower. All three got injured and taken to the hospital.

The protesting women are demanding an increase in minimum salaries, fixed salaries and travel allowance. The association alleged that they had been making these demands for too long, but all their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. So they headed towards the chief minister’s residence in Shyamala Hills, but were stopped near the Polytechnic Square by the police.

The women then sat in the middle of the road and raised slogans against the chief minister.

Asha workers assist in childbirth, provide first aid, help with vaccinations and educate communities on birth control measures and issues of sanitation as part of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM)  introduced in 2005, which envisaged planting at least one Asha worker in every village by 2012. Each ASHA worker is meant to handle 1,000 people.

For every childbirth they are paid Rs 300 and an additional Rs 250 for a week of follow-up visits and the delivery report. But this is only if the woman is a BPL card holder (below poverty line). For collecting samples for various tests, we get Rs 15. Our income depends entirely on the number of cases we handle. So when there are fewer cases, we barely earn anything.

Asha workers in Gujarat have also been demanding fixed wages, permanent employment with regularised working hours and social security benefits like maternity leave and health insurance.

Rapes, Murders Alleged At Bhopal Shelter Home; Ex-Armyman, 70, Arrested

Bhopal:

The inmates of a private shelter home in Bhopal have alleged that the owner of the facility has been subjecting them to sexual abuse for a long time, and three of their fellow inmates have died due to the severe abuse. Based on a complaint by the inmates, the owner, a 70-year-old ex-armyman, has been arrested, the police said.

Five inmates — three boys and two girls — first went to the social justice department with their complaint before going to the police. A First Information Report or FIR has been filed.

The inmates alleged a boy died due to excessive bleeding after he was sexually assaulted; they said another died of injuries after his head was banged on a wall, and the third allegation says an inmate died due to cold after he was forced to spend the night outside.

The shelter home is registered with the department since 1995 and has been getting funds. The inmates — 42 boys and 58 girls — have been living at the home since 2003. For the last 10 years, four teachers have been looking after the shelter home in the absence of a full-time warden.

People with direct knowledge of the matter said the warden was removed a long time ago after his educational qualification failed to meet the cut.

“Some students with special needs (hearing and speech) came to our office with their interpreter. They have given us a letter about alleged sexual and physical assault by the owner of the hostel. We will write to the collector and senior police officers for further investigation,” said Krishna Mohan Tiwari, director, Social Justice Department.

The chief minister last month ordered monthly inspection of every shelter home and orphanage in the state, and instructed officials to make guidelines for private girls’ hostels.

Bhopal Medical Students Demand Probe In Jodhpur AIIMS Suicide Case

Students of AIIMS Bhopal want an “impartial probe” into a student’s alleged suicide (Representational)

Bhopal:

Students of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhopal have demanded an “impartial probe” into the alleged suicide by a 20-year-old woman student of the AIIMS in Jodhpur.

They held a candle march in Bhopal last evening and alleged that the student, Rashmi Yadav, ended her life after harassment by a teacher.

Rashmi Yadav, a native of Alwar district in Rajasthan, had taken admission in AIIMS, Jodhpur, on July 23. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room on the night of July 26.

“We demand an impartial probe into the suicide of the student, who took the extreme step allegedly due to harassment at the hands of a teacher,” Sant Guru Prasad, former president of AIIMS Bhopal student’s union, told reporters in Bhopal.

This is the third such incident at AIIMS, Jodhpur, in the last three years, claimed Mr Prasad, who led the candle march.

The students have also written a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda and director of AIIMS, Jodhpur, on the issue.

The police in Jodhpur had said after the incident that “in a suicide note, Rashmi Yadav advised a teacher to behave properly with students”.
