Media “Grossly Misinterpreted” Remarks On Mumbai Attack: Nawaz Sharif

Nawaz Sharif also criticised the apparent delay in the conclusion of the Mumbai attack trial

Lahore:  Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif Sunday claimed that the media “grossly misinterpreted” his remarks. He has been facing ire from all quarters for his admission on the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

Mr Sharif, for the first time, publicly acknowledged in an interview that militant organisations are active in Pakistan and questioned the policy to allow the “non-state actors” to cross the border and “kill” people in Mumbai.

The former premier, who has been disqualified to hold public office for life by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case, said Pakistan has isolated itself.

A spokesman for Mr Sharif said: “At the outset, statement of Nawaz Sharif has been grossly misinterpreted by the Indian media. Unfortunately a section of Pakistani electronic and social media has intentionally or unintentionally not only validated but has lent credence to the malicious propaganda of Indian media without going through the full facts of the statement”.

“The PML-N would like to set the record straight on the interview of PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif carried Saturday by Dawn,” he said in a statement.

The spokesman said the PML-N as the country’s premier popular national political party and its supreme leader (Nawaz Sharif) need no certificate from anybody on their commitment and capacity to preserve, protect and promote Pakistan’s national security.

“After all, it was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who, resisting all pressures, took the most important and most difficult decision on national security in Pakistan’s history by making the country a nuclear power in May 1998,” he said.

In an an exclusive interview with Dawn on Friday, Mr Sharif also criticised the apparent delay in the conclusion of the Mumbai attack trial.

He is under attack from opponents as well as some of the estranged leaders from his Pakistan Muslims League-Nawaz (PML-N) party for allegedly supporting the Indian narrative on the Mumbai attack case and harming national interests.

Leading opposition leader and cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan said that Sharif was speaking the language of (Indian Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and cooperating against enemies of Pakistan to harm the country.

In the interview, Mr Sharif said: “We have isolated ourselves. Despite giving sacrifices, our narrative is not being accepted. Afghanistan’s narrative is being accepted, but ours is not. We must look into it”.

Without naming Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and Maulana Masood Azhar’s militant organisations — Jamaat-ud-Dawah and Jaish-e-Mohammad — operating in the country with impunity, Sharif said: “Militant organisations are active in Pakistan.

“Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill over 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial”.

Mr Sharif, 68, was disqualified by the Supreme Court for not being “honest and righteous” as he failed to declare in 2013 a salary he got from the company of his son in the UAE.

Some 166 people were killed in the attack carried out by 10 LeT men. Nine of the attackers were killed by police while lone survivor Ajmal Kasab was caught and hanged after handed down death sentence.

Moneeza Hashmi, Pakistani Poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s Daughter Alleges Ban From Asia Media Summit In New Delhi

Lahore:  The daughter of noted Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz has accused Indian authorities of denying her entry into a media summit in New Delhi where she was invited as a speaker. Moneeza Hashmi, 72, an eminent Pakistani television and media personality, was listed as a speaker at the 15th Asia Media Summit in New Delhi between May 10 and 12.

Organisers in New Delhi, however, denied the charge and said that they are not even aware of any such incident. Press Information Bureau chief Sitanshu Kar said that he was not aware of any such incident.

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Director KG Suresh said: “I am not even aware of it, of this entire incident. I also came to know about it only through media persons.”

Ms Hashmi left India for Lahore yesterday after she said she was barred from attending the summit.

“I was invited by the Asia-Pacific Institute of Broadcasting Development (ABID) but the Indian authorities stopped me from attending the summit in New Delhi,” Ms Moneeza told reporters in Lahore on Sunday.

“I was to speak ‘Should All Good Stories be Commercially Successful’ along with three other speakers in the summit but I was refused entry,” she said.

Ms Hashmi said that on her arrival on May 9 in New Delhi, she was told that she had no booking of the hotel and she was not registered.

“The organisers apologised. I stayed in another hotel and left for Lahore on May 12,” she added.

The summit was hosted in New Delhi from May 10-12 in which representatives from nearly 40 countries delved on issues related to the media sector.

The summit was hosted by the Information and Broadcasting (I-B) Ministry, jointly with the IIMC, and public sector firm Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Ltd (BECIL).

Karnataka Assembly Elections Results To Weigh Heavily On Stock Markets After Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi Campaigned In Karnataka Elections

The Q4 results along with Karnataka Assembly Elections Results will decide the fate of Sensex, Nifty

The outcome of Karnataka assembly elections, and the performance of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had campaigned heavily, are likely to determine the fate of equity market indices (Sensex and Nifty) this week. Other factors that are expected to cast a shadow on the market trajectory include the release of macro-economic data of retail inflation (CPI), wholesale inflation (WPI), crude oil prices and other geo-political factors. Devendra Nevgi, founder and principal partner of Delta Global Partners, said, “The big market moving event next week will be the Karnataka elections outcome especially BJP’s performance. Crude oil prices, US-Iran developments and earnings would be closely monitored.”

Markets Outlook This Week. Ten Things To Know

1. The markets will closely watch the Karnataka Assembly poll results, which will be announced on May 15. Most exit polls, so far, have hinted at a hung 242-seat house, with the BJP expected to emerge as the single largest party followed by Rahul Gandhi-led Congress.

2. On Monday, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) is scheduled to release the macro-economic data points that include the consumer price index-led inflation (CPI)and wholesale price index (WPI) along with the Balance of Trade figure. Mr Nevgi further added that the markets would also monitor the CPI and trade deficit data next week. A higher than expected CPI would trigger a rise in bond yields, though the weaker IIP data would mitigate some of the rise, he said.

3. The companies that will release their March quarter numbers include Abbott India, Hindustan Unilever, Britannia Industries, Axis Bank, Lupin, Punjab National Bank, ITC, Tata Steel, Welspun India, Hindalco Industries, and Voltas.

4. SMC Investments and Advisors chairman and managing director D.K. Aggarwal echoes the similar sentiments when he says: “Macroeconomic data, next batch of quarterly earnings, trend in global markets, the movement of rupee against the dollar and crude oil prices will dictate the trend of the stock market going forward.”

5. The two factors that can add downside to the markets can be triggered by higher inflation on higher oil prices and fall of rupee’s value in the currency markets. At the same time, the easing geopolitical tensions can boost the markets, as stated by Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services.

6. The open market operations by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will help soothe the frayed nerves in the bond market and bring stability in the value of Indian rupee. However, the out flow of foreign funds due to rich valuation is a concern to the market.

7. In terms of investments, last week’s provisional figures from the stock exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors sold scrips worth Rs 2,126.74 crore.

8. Figures from the National Securities Depository (NSDL) revealed that foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) divested equities worth Rs 2,678.35 crore, or $399.75 million, in the week ended May 11.

9. On technical charts, the underlying trend for the National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) Nifty remains “firm”. “Technically with the Nifty surging higher and closing above the 10,800 points levels, the underlying trend remains firmly up,” said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research for HDFC Securities. He further added that further upsides are likely once the immediate resistance of 10,878 points is taken out.

10. Last week, healthy Q4 earnings and positive global cues including easing tensions between the US and North Korea lifted the key Indian equity indices. However, caution prevailed ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka. On a weekly basis, the barometer 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE rose by 620.41 points or 1.78 per cent to close at 35,535.79 points. In addition, the wider Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed last week’s trade at 10,806.50 points — up 188.25 points or 1.77 per cent from its previous week’s close. Mike Pompeo Says US Is Assuring North Korea’s Kim That It Does Not Seek His Overthrow

Mike Pompeo said US is assuring Kim Jong Un his ouster is not part of the summit agenda. (File)

Washington:  The United States is assuring North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that his ouster is not part of the agenda for the summit next month between Kim and President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday.

“We will have to provide security assurances, to be sure,” Pompeo said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

The promise not to invade North Korea or otherwise seek Kim’s overthrow would be incentive for him to give up his nuclear weapons.

“This has been a trade-off that has been pending for 25 years,” Pompeo said, referring to the long history of failed negotiations with Pyongyang as well as the North Korean narrative that the United States is a mortal threat.

Trump is scheduled to meet Kim in Singapore on June 12 for an unprecedented summit.

On CBS’ “Face The Nation,” Pompeo said he had already provided that assurance to Kim.

“I have told him that what President Trump wants is to see the North Korean regime get rid of its nuclear weapons program, completely and in totality, and in exchange for that we are prepared to ensure that the North Korean people get the opportunity that they so richly deserve.”

“No president has ever put America in a position where the North Korean leadership thought that this was truly possible, that the Americans would actually do this, would lead to the place where America was no longer held at risk by the North Korean regime,” Pompeo said.

The U.S. position is not new – Pompeo’s predecessor, Rex Tillerson, also had stressed that the United States would not seek Kim’s ouster – but it carries additional weight now that Trump and Kim are to face to face. It is also significant because of past statements by both Pompeo and new White House national security adviser John Bolton about potential regime change in North Korea.

Pompeo said last year that the most dangerous element of the North Korea nuclear weapons problem “is the character who holds the control” over the weapons.

“So, from the administration’s perspective, the most important thing we can do is separate those two, right?” Pompeo, who was CIA director at the time, had said at the Aspen Security Forum. “Separate capacity and someone who might well have intent and break those two apart.”

However, he told senators during his confirmation hearing last month that he does not support regime change in North Korea.

Bolton, speaking Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” said his own past advocacy for regime change in North Korea and in Iran were the views of “a free agent” and are irrelevant to his current job.

“I’m the national security adviser to the president,” but Trump calls the shots, Bolton said.

As recently as December, Bolton had said that he favored “regime elimination” in North Korea.

“My proposal would be: Eliminate the regime by reunifying the peninsula under South Korean control,” Bolton had said on Fox News, where he was a frequent commentator. Asked whether he is calling for regime change, he replied, “Yes. Regime elimination with the Chinese. This is something we need to do with them.”

Bolton said that if Trump can negotiate an agreement with Kim, it might be submitted to the Senate as a treaty as the next step in the ratification process.

“It’s entirely possible we could,” Bolton said, adding that to do so would address “one of the criticisms of the Iran deal.”

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal was concluded as a compact among nations but was not submitted to the Senate for ratification by the Obama administration. Trump pulled the United States out of the agreement last week. Bolton said Sunday that it should not have come as a surprise to European powers.

European companies could be subject to U.S. sanctions if they continue doing some business with Iran, he said, adding that the threat of such sanctions will have a “dramatic” effect on Iran’s already struggling economy.

On ABC’s “This Week,” Bolton said Trump will raise the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea as well as the detention of South Koreans when he sees Kim. Both issues are of intense importance to U.S. allies. But Bolton hedged on how far Trump might take any human rights criticism of a regime the United States has previously accused of mass incarceration, torture and starvation of civilians.

“This first meeting is going to be primarily on denuclearization,” Bolton said, adding that other issues could follow.

Pompeo also said that if the summit leads to successful negotiations, the outcome will bring private investment in North Korea. He said it will include helping North Korea build out its energy grid and develop its agriculture program so it can grow enough food for its people.

“Those are the kinds of things that, if we get what it is the president has demanded – the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of North Korea – that the American people will offer in spades,” he said.

Pompeo said a lot of work remains to achieve that goal.

“Our eyes are wide open with respect to the risks, but it is our fervent hope that Chairman Kim wants to make a strategic change,” he said. “A strategic change in the direction for his country and his people, and if he’s prepared to do that, President Trump is prepared to assure that this can be a successful transition.”

Pompeo went to North Korea last week to discuss preparations for the summit and returned with three U.S. citizens who had been detained in North Korea. He met for almost 90 minutes with Kim, his second face-to-face encounter with the North Korean leader, and he described him as professional and knowledgeable.

“He, too is preparing for June 12, he and his team,” Pompeo said. “We’ll be working with them to put our two leaders in a position where it’s just possible we might pull off a historic undertaking.”

On CBS, Pompeo contrasted the Trump administration’s approach with those of previous presidents who tried to negotiate North Korea’s denuclearization .

“We’re hopeful that this will be different,” he said. “That we won’t do the traditional model, where they do something, and we give them a bunch of money, and then both sides walk away. We’re hoping this will be bigger, different, faster. Our ask is complete and total denuclearization of North Korea, and it is the president’s intention to achieve that. “

In exchange, he said, North Korea will get what Pompeo characterized as “our finest” – “Our entrepreneurs, our risk takers. our capital providers.”

He said private equity, encouraged by sanctions relief, would help North Korea improve its electrical grid, infrastructure and agricultural production.

“We can create the conditions for real economic prosperity for the North Korean people that will rival that of the South,” he said.

Amit Shah Recalls Time When BJP Workers Celebrated Not Losing Deposits

Panaji:  Pointing out that BJP workers at one point in time celebrated if party candidates saved their security deposits, party president Amit Shah on Sunday said it had come a long way since then.

From celebrating salvaging of security deposits, the BJP has become a political party with the most number of MPs, MLAs, zila panchayat members, councillors in the country and the only non-Congress party to win a full majority after Independence, Mr Shah said while addressing booth-level workers at an indoor stadium near Panaji.

He claimed that his party will win a majority in the Karnataka Assembly, the votes for which were polled on May 12. The votes will be counted on May 15.

“… there are many instances where party workers gave themselves a treat for barely managing to save forfeiture of deposits. The same BJP now has around 1,800 MLAs, 330 MPs, highest number of zilla panchayat members, councillors and the most state governments, Chief Ministers…,” he remarked.

Mr Shah said that he had a conversation with ailing Goa Chief Minister Parrikar on telephone. “I said you (Parrikar) take care of your health, the BJP will form a government with full majority in Karnataka,” Mr Shah said.

The BJP leader said that India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, was being looked at in a new light after the surgical strikes of 2016.

He also praised booth-level BJP workers, saying that it was due to them that the party had an organisational ability like no other.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat To Begin 4-Day Crucial Visit To Sri Lanka Today

New Delhi:  Army Chief General Bipin Rawat will begin a four-day visit to Sri Lanka today with an aim to take forward the military cooperation between the two countries to the “next level”.

General Rawat’s maiden visit to the island nation as the Army Chief comes amid growing concern in the security establishment about China’s persistent efforts to expand its influence over Colombo.

The Army said Gen Rawat will hold talks with top political and military leadership of Sri Lanka and explore new areas of military-to-military cooperation between the ground forces of the two countries.

“He is scheduled to meet the senior-most political and military hierarchy of Sri Lanka. The visit assumes significance in light of India’s persistent efforts to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and military cooperation based on mutual interests and understanding,” the Army said in a statement.

It said the focus of the visit would be to take forward the military-to-military cooperation between the two countries to the “next level”.

In December last, Sri Lanka had handed over the control of the southern sea port of Hambantota to China on a 99-year lease, triggering concerns here.

Sri Lanka had later clarified that the port will not be used as a military base and it will not engage in any activities which may harm India’s security interests.

Apart from meeting the senior leadership of the three services of Sri Lanka, Gen Rawat is also scheduled to meet the regional military commanders in Kandy and Trincomalee, Army officials said.

The regional commanders of the Lankan army are considered very influential in military matters.

The Army said the visit of Gen Rawat is reflective of India’s persistent efforts to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and military cooperation based on mutual interests and understanding.

“Indian Army has been catering not only for varied training requirements of the Sri Lankan Army, including imparting specific tailor-made training in different fields, but also providing military hardware support,” the Army said.

The Chief of the Army Staff will be inaugurating a communication laboratory at School of Signals in Kandy.

The laboratory has been established by the Indian Army to train the personnel of Sri Lanka Army’s Signal Corps.

General Rawat will also be visiting the Sri Lanka Military Academy in Diyatalawa.

Ravinder Raina, A ‘Hardliner’ Accused Of Assault Inside Assembly, Is New Jammu And Kashmir BJP Chief

Jammu:  An old RSS hand, known as a ‘hardliner’ who had allegedly assaulted a legislator inside the state Assembly for holding a “beef party”, newly-appointed Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina joined politics, it is said, on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s advice.

The 40-year-old former Sangh pracharak made steady progress and won from his home constituency of Nowshera in Rajouri district on a BJP ticket in the state Assembly elections in 2014.

The MLA was appointed as the president of the BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit by party chief Amit Shah today. His predecessor, Sat Sharma, was inducted into the PDP-BJP government as a minister last month.

Holding a post-graduate degree in international law and human rights, Mr Raina has been associated with the welfare of victims of terrorism in the state. After graduation, he qualified the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam and joined the Indian Navy, but returned as a human rights activist in 2004.

It is said that Mr Raina was advised to join the BJP by former Prime Minister Vajpayee during a meeting. He soon rose to become the state president of party’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

He courted controversy in 2015 when he took oath in the name of ‘Mata Vaishno Devi’. It was strongly objected by Opposition members, who said there was no provision for a member of the House to take oath in the name of Vaishno Devi.

However, the then pro tem Speaker, Mohammad Shafi, intervened and asked him to take oath in the name of God.

Outspoken in his criticism of Pakistan and separatists, including the Hurriyat leaders, Mr Raina created a scene in the Assembly in Jammu when he allegedly assaulted Independent legislator from north Kashmir, Sheikh Rashid, for hosting a “beef party” outside the MLA hostel in Srinagar in 2015.

During the budget session early this year, Mr Raina led his party colleagues several times in shouting anti-Pakistan slogans in the House to protest the frequent ceasefire violations by the neighbouring country along the Line of Control or LoC.

He also unsuccessfully sought the passage of a resolution in the Assembly condemning Pakistan for repeatedly shelling and firing in the border areas.
