North Korea To Destroy Nuclear Site Ahead Of US Summit: KCNA

Sceptics warn that Pyongyang has yet to make any public commitment to give up its arsenal. (File)

Seoul, South Korea:  North Korea will destroy its nuclear test site later this month, ahead of a summit with the United States, it said Saturday, pledging to blow up its tunnels in front of invited foreign media.

US President Donald Trump praised the North’s decision to dismantle the Punggye-ri test site in a ceremony scheduled between May 23-25, the latest step in leader Kim Jong Un’s charm offensive.

“Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!” Trump tweeted.

Dialogue brokered by Seoul has seen US-North Korea relations go from trading personal insults and threats of war last year to a summit between Kim and Trump due in Singapore on June 12.

But sceptics warn that Pyongyang has yet to make any public commitment to give up its arsenal, which includes missiles capable of reaching the United States.

Washington is seeking the “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation” of the North and stresses that verification will be key.

Punggye-ri, in the northeast of the country, has hosted all six of the North’s nuclear tests, the latest and by far the most powerful in September last year, which Pyongyang said was an H-bomb.

Kim has declared the development of the North’s nuclear force complete and that it had no further need for the site.

The latest measures will see the tunnels of the test site blown up and their entrances completely blocked, Pyongyang’s foreign ministry said, according to the official KCNA news agency.

All observation facilities and research institutes would be removed, along with guards, it said, “and the surrounding area of the test ground be completely closed”.

Reporters from China, Russia, the United States, Britain and South Korea would be allowed to cover the event on site to show it “in a transparent manner”.

Limits on foreign journalists were due to space constraints, it said, as the site was in an “uninhabited deep mountain area”.

Analysts said the move was positive but limited in its scope.

It was “not bad, but a cost-free signal”, tweeted MIT political science professor Vipin Narang.

Given the stage it had already reached, Pyongyang “may feel like they don’t need to test anything for a while”, he said.

Jeffrey Lewis, of the Middlebury Institute for International Studies, expected that the North “will sanitise the site before letting anyone see it”.

‘Fire and fury’

Saturday’s announcement is the latest move in a rapid sequence of events on the Korean peninsula triggered by the Winter Olympics in the South.

Tensions had been mounting for years as Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes saw it subjected to multiple rounds of increasingly strict sanctions by the UN Security Council, the US, EU, South Korea and others, and Trump last year threatened the North with “fire and fury”.

But since the Pyeongchang Games, Pyongyang and Washington have agreed to the unprecedented Singapore meeting, and Kim has twice visited China to meet President Xi Jinping, after not paying respects in the six years since he inherited power from his father.

The head of the UN’s World Food Programme said Saturday it appeared North Korea was “turning a new page in history”, following a four-day visit to the country.

David Beasley said he had enjoyed unprecedented access to the secretive state, telling BBC radio that North Korea’s leaders had a “sense of optimism”.

Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month affirmed their commitment to the goal of “realising, through complete denuclearisation, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula” at a summit in the Demilitarized Zone that divides their countries.

But the phrase is a diplomatic euphemism open to interpretation on both sides.

Pyongyang has long wanted to see an end to the US military presence in and nuclear umbrella over the South, but it invaded its neighbour in 1950 and is the only one of the two Koreas to possess nuclear weapons.

This week the North released three Korean-Americans it had detained into the care of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was making his second trip to Pyongyang in two months.

Trump also withdrew the United States from a nuclear pact with Iran, raising questions over whether Pyongyang would trust Washington’s promises.

Pompeo Friday promised the US would work to rebuild North Korea’s sanctions-hit economy if it agreed to surrender its nuclear arsenal.

Donald Trump Thanks North Korea For ‘Gracious’ Pledge To Destroy Nuclear Site

Donald Trump tweeted saying “Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!” (File)

Washington, United States:  US President Donald Trump on Saturday thanked North Korea after it pledged to destroy its nuclear test site ahead of his summit meeting with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

“North Korea has announced that they will dismantle Nuclear Test Site this month, ahead of the big Summit Meeting on June 12th,” he tweeted.

“Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!”

The site at Punggye-ri, in the northeast of the country, will be dismantled in front of foreign media between May 23-25 — the latest in the North Korean leader’s charm offensive.

Cate Blanchett And Other Female Stars Demand Pay Equality In Hollywood

Cannes, France:
Hollywood stars including Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart and Salma Hayek called Saturday for equal pay in the cinema industry and beyond in a historic red carpet protest at the Cannes film festival. Eighty-two actresses, filmmakers and producers marched arm and arm to demand equality and “a safe workplace”, seven months after the world was shaken by the #MeToo movement and the fall of mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The ranks included a battalion of Oscar winners from Helen Mirren and Marion Cotillard to US blockbuster directors Ava DuVernay and Patty Jenkins who made Wonder Woman.

“We demand that our workplaces are diverse and equitable so they can best reflect the world in which we live,” said Blanchett in a statement read out with the legendary 89-year-old French director Agnes Varda.

Blanchett, a double Oscar winner, said they wanted “a world that allows all of us in front and behind the camera to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues.”

With Cannes under fire for its dearth of women directors, the world’s top film festival hoped to fend off some of the fierce criticism with the march.

The number of protesters was highly symbolic as it represented the 82 films by female directors who have competed for the top Palme d’Or prize since 1946 – a number dwarfed by the nearly 1,700 male contenders.

The star-studded group stopped halfway up the stairs to the Palais des Festivals to mark the obstacles they face in trying to reach the top.

– Women in suits –

“The stairs of our industry must be accessible to all. Let’s climb,” Blanchett declared, with some of the rally’s participants visibly moved.

The Australian actress also head the female-majority jury that will decide the festival’s top prize.

Several protestors including Stewart made a strong fashion statement by donning suits and tuxedos, in a show of defiance to Cannes’ red-carpet dress code which is often denounced as sexist.

Women have been stopped from entering premieres in the past for not wearing high heels.

Producer and activist Melissa Silverstein of Women and Hollywood hailed the event as a “massive milestone towards change”.

“An honour to share the carpet with @Ava (DuVernay) and all the other women who are pushing for more opportunities for women,” she said in a tweet after the march.

The protest took place ahead of the premiere of Girls Of The Sun by Eva Husson, one of only three women out of 21 directors in the running for the Palme d’Or.

The film is the story of the Kurdish Yazidi all-female Sun Brigade who are fighting Islamic State jihadists in Syria and Iraq, where thousands of women were kept as slaves.

The protest comes at the first Cannes festival since the cinema industry was engulfed by the spiralling sex abuse allegations against Weinstein.

Cannes was the scene of several of the disgraced Hollywood mogul’s alleged attacks on actresses.

In response, the festival set up an anti-harassment hotline this year.

The number has already received “several calls” since the festival’s launch on May 9, said French Equality Minister Marlene Schiappa.

Cannes “must be a safe space for women,” she stressed.

– ‘Disturbing’ depictions –

Blanchett has criticised Cannes for once again failing to invite more female directors.

“There are many women on the jury but I wish there were more in competition,” the Australian-born star told French radio earlier this week.

The 48-year-old has emerged as a key figure in Hollywood’s fight against sexual misconduct.

One of the first women to call out Weinstein, Blanchett co-founded the Time’s Up movement to support abuse victims.

Her comments echo those of fellow actress Jessica Chastain who served on the jury last year and lambasted Cannes for its “disturbing” depiction of women.

Chastain caused a stir on Thursday when she revealed that she planned to make Hollywood’s first big budget all-female blockbuster with a cast including Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyong’o.

Only seven percent of Hollywood blockbusters were directed by women in 2016.

France has the best ratio among the major film-producing countries with 23 percent of films directed by women.

All About Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Battle Against The World

New Delhi:
As the makers and actors gear up for the world premiere of Manto in the Cannes Film Festival, we got a glimpse of the much talked-about movie in the latest teaser dropped by the producers today. Manto, directed by Nandita Das is based on the life of writer Saadat Hassan Manto (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui), whose writings were criticized for being obscene (so-called). In over a minute long promo, the teaser tries to draw your attention towards the writer’s struggle to establish his idea in a world which tagged his work as vulgar and progressive. In the promo, it’s Nawazuddin Siddiqui who holds your attention and is also the cynosure of all eyes. Manto’s writings have influenced generations across borders, and his works were a real path-breaker. What is much evident from the teaser of Manto is the fact that the film encompasses around the life of the Urdu writer during a sensitive period of Indian history – post and pre-independence.

It’s Manto against the whole world whose writings some people failed to connect with. But that does not daunt the writer’s determination who is bent on showing what is real. Manto questions filtering his thoughts about what is persistent in society. The teaser is packed with his emotional ordeal, sense of humour and disappointment on the prospect of Partition. His protest against the society norms costs him his family’s happiness and the writer’s tiff with his wife (played by Rasika Dugal) is proof.

Watch the teaser of Manto here:

Manto has been produced by HP Studios, Filmstoc and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. The film will be premiered at the French Riviera in the in the Un Certain Regard section. The film also stars Chandan Roy Sanyal, Atul Kumar, Ila Arun, Shashank Arora and Tahir Raj Bhasin. The release date of the film has not been announced.

Congress Misused Power, BJP Will Form Government In Karnataka

Yogi Adityanath accused the Congress of misusing its powers in Karnataka (File Photo)

Gorakhpur:  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today accused the Congress of misusing its powers in Karnataka and exuded confidence that the BJP would form government in the southern state with a clear majority.

The chief minister, who reached Gorakhpur after receiving the first bus carrying pilgrims from Janakpur in Nepal to Ayodhaya, will stay at the Goraknath temple tonight.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli on Friday jointly inaugurated a direct bus service between Janakpur and Ayodhya – the two sacred cities for Hindus.

About the Karnataka Assembly elections, voting for which was held today, Yogi Adityanath said, “Congress misused its power there. Their ministers were found distributing money openly and they also used other ways to get votes. But the people of Karnataka are in full enthusiasm and we got their immense support. We believe that we will win in the state with a massive majority,” he said.

In what is projected as a tight race, voting was held in 222 out of 224 seats in a three-cornered contest among the ruling Congress, the BJP and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s JD(S).

“Suicide by farmers is the highest in Karnataka…The benefits of government schemes were not reaching the needy. The government there was working with a feeling of political hostility… I feel they will pay for it,” Yogi Adityanath said.

“I am certain that after witnessing the negative attitude of the Congress government, people there will ensure that the BJP takes over the charge of governance,” he said.

On a tweet of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav asking the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh to fulfil the promises made by the ruling party for Ayodhaya, the chief minister said, “Whatever development work is done in Ayodhya has been done by us.”

Yogi Adityanath said that due to the efforts of the Prime Minister, a new era of cordial relations between India and Nepal has begun.

“This was the third visit of the prime minister to Nepal… strong relations between the two countries exist from ancient times. PM Modi took this relationship a step forward and started bus service between Janakpur and Ayodhaya,” he said.
