On One Year Anniversary Of GST, Congress Terms It “Grossly Scary Tax”

New Delhi:

As the Goods and Services Tax (GST) roll-out completes one year on July 1, the Congress on Saturday described it as a “Grossly Scary Tax” and said the promise of a “single tax GST” still remains a pipe dream.

The party also said multiple returns, multiple rules and multiple tax slabs have made life of an ordinary trader “nightmarish”.

“GST completes 1 Year at 12 O’Clock tonight, it remains ‘Grossly Scary Tax’ for millions of traders, shopkeepers & businessmen. No wonder GST’s more popular description is ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ than ‘Genuine and Simple Tax’ that it was meant to be,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala in Twitter.

“A ‘Single Tax GST’, as promised, remains a ‘pipe dream’. Multiple returns, multiple rules and multiple tax slabs have made the life of an ordinary trader nightmarish,” he added.

Mr Surjewala said: “To determine GST itself is frightening. Steps- 1) Every taxpayer has to search a ‘Code Book’ running into 438 pages with 18,036 categories 2. Out of 7 tax slabs, applicable slab has to be found 3. Add all state cesses 4. Add supply chain incentives 5. Calculate GST.”

“Even after one year, only GSTR-1 form exists. Government failed to notify GSTR-2 and GSTR-3. Till that happens, bills won’t match and refund would remain a nightmare.

“Also, GSTR-3B is a temporary form. How can government continue to stretch it at all?” he asked.

The Congress leader also said: “Out of 111 lakh registered businesses under GST, not more then 50 per cent have been able to file GST returns.”

“Ambiguity, complication, deficiency of IT infrastructure remains a major challenge. GST collections remain at an average of 90K crore against the target of 1.25K crore per month,” he tweeted.

Small Finance Banks (SFBs) Offer High Interest Rates Over Large Banks State Bank Of India (SBI): Advantages, Benefits

Fincare Small Finance Bank offers interest rates of up to 9% on FDs of 2-3 years (Representational image)

Small finance banks offer higher interest rates than their larger peers. Interest rates on savings accounts, recurring deposits (RDs) and fixed deposits (FDs) of small finance banks are as high as 9 per cent for regular citizens and 9.5 per cent for seniors. Fixed and recurring deposits below Rs 1 crore in State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest bank, fetch an interest rate of 6.75 per cent for regular citizens and 7.25 per cent for seniors. So how and why do small finance banks offer higher interest rates than larger peers?

History of small finance banks

Small finance banks by design are focused on financial inclusion, and lend to the priority sector consisting of the unbanked and underbanked segments such as the rural poor, small farmers, and micro and small enterprises.

Most small finance banks have converted from microfinance institutions (MFIs) or non-banking finance companies (NBFCs). As NBFC-MFIs, they were not permitted to raise deposits in the form of savings accounts, current accounts and fixed deposits, and instead had to rely on financing in the form of borrowings from banks and financial institutions, at interest rates in the range of 11-12 per cent.

Advantages of small finance banks

High interest rates

Consider this: Fincare Small Finance Bank offers interest rates of up to 9 per cent per annum for fixed deposits, going up to 9.5 per cent for senior citizens, for a tenure of two-three years.

“The ability of small finance banks to offer such higher rates stems from their keenness to build a retail franchise,” said R Bhaskar Babu, MD and CEO, Suryoday Small Finance Bank, which offers an interest rate of up to 7.25 per cent on savings bank accounts and up to 8.75 per cent on fixed deposit accounts.

Digital penetration

With a focus on technology and digital banking, small finance banks are able to provide a seamless experience to their customers. Fincare SFB is one of the few banks in the country that offer 101, a digital savings account that can be opened online within five minutes using Aadhaar-based e-KYC (Know Your Customer) or electronic verification. Customers of Fincare’s 101 account get their personalized debit cards in a couple of days, including those with a zero balance variant.

“We deliver door-step service according to the convenience of the clients. Also, for the customers, SFBs are as easily accessible (as large banks) as it has more touch points in rural areas,” said a spokesperson from ESAF Small Finance Bank.

Small finance banks offer easy access, easy processing and convenient repayment terms of loans.

How are small finance banks able to score over larger lenders?

Most small finance banks enjoy a healthy NPA (non-performing asset) ratio. So depositors need not worry over the safety of their hard-earned money.

“The higher interest rate that customers are able to avail do not come at any higher risks in comparison to large banks. Depositors with SFBs have exactly the same protection that is available to a customer of a large bank,” said Rahul Agarwal, director, Wealth Discovery/EZ Wealth.

Small finance banks cannot lend to the corporate segment that has seen a significant spike in bad loans and are not allowed to deal in complex, structured products. “Therefore, the risk exposure of SFBs is significantly lower than that of other banks,” said Rajeev Yadav, MD and CEO, Fincare Small Finance Bank.

Digital adaptability has reduced the turnaround time for various activities offered by SFBs and removed the need for paper, thus bringing down the costs considerably. Hence, SFBs are able to reduce costs and are able to pass on those benefits to customers in the form of higher interest rates.

“Established banks are yet to directly foray into the microfinance segment, and their business set up may not allow them to reach this segment, which is as much in need of regular banking services but at their doorstep. This gap is what the SFBs can easily cater to,” said R Baskar Babu, MD and CEO, Suryoday Small Finance Bank.

After Protests Against Gang-Rape In Madhya Pradesh, Politics Takes Over

Thousands of people took to the streets protesting the rape of a 7-year-old girl. (Representational)

New Delhi:

After spontaneous protests erupted in parts of Madhya Pradesh to seek death penalty for the men who brutalised a seven-year-old girl in Mandsaur, political parties moved in on Saturday. The Congress launched a blistering attack at the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government for doing “absolutely nothing” for the safety of women and demanded the probe be handed over to the CBI.

A political row also erupted over BJP lawmaker Sudarshan Gupta telling the girl’s parents to “say thank you” to a BJP leader for calling on them. A video clip that captured Mr Gupta’s advice to the parents has been circulated widely, triggering a sharp reaction against the ruling party lawmaker.

“In terms of insensitivity, the incident has reached its peak when a BJP MLA from Indore introduces the MP of Mandsaur to the parents of the victim and says how they should feel glad that he has paid them a visit,” Congress’ Priyanka Chaturvedi said.

The legislator, who has been badgered by the opposition, has since then claimed that his comments were misconstrued but given an unqualified apology.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Congress leader who heads the party’s campaign committee for the assembly elections later this year said, “I am requesting for the CBI probe because the reasons behind this case need attention”. He held Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and the BJP, which has been in power for 15 years, responsible for the horrific rapes in Mandsaur and elsewhere.

The young girl, a Class 2 student, was standing outside her school on Tuesday, waiting for her parents to pick her up outside when she was lured away by the two men, Irfan and Asif. They raped her, tortured her and then slit her throat before walking away, leaving her to die.

The girl, found brutalised some 700 metres from her school, did survive. But she is still battling for life.
The police made the first arrests on Wednesday night and caught Irfan Khan, the man spotted in a CCTV footage leading her away. Asif, the second suspect, was arrested on Friday.

But as word about her injuries spread, thousands of people came on the streets in Mandsaur this week to demand that the police hand over the accused to them for instant justice.

Mandsaur’s top police officer Manoj Singh told Reuters that investigators are just waiting to speak with the seven-year-old girl once before filing formal charges in court.

Asked why the Congress wanted the case to go to the CBI when the police had made the arrests, Mr Scindia said he was just saying that “action should be taken as soon as possible”.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the accused should be sent to the gallows and deserved no mercy. He has ordered the police to quickly file charges against the accused and send the case to a fast track court.

The back-and-forth was much bitter on social media.

After Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the brutality the girl was subjected to, sickened him, the BJP’s Amit Malviya hit out, saying the Congress had used the crime as a “political tool”.

He also countered a Congress tweet that said a female was raped every 15 minutes.

This translates into 35,000 rapes annually, which is closer to the total rapes in the entire country, Mr Malviya added.

Google Doodle Celebrates Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s 372nd Birthday

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is also credited for stating the first modern formula for pi.

Google today celebrates the 372nd birthday of German philosopher and mathematician’s Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz with a doodle. He was born on July 1, 1646, Leipzig, then Roman Empire (now in Saxony, Germany).

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was easily one of the most brilliant minds of his time and occupies a prominent place in the history of mathematics. He is credited for his inventions in the field of mechanical calculators and was the first to describe a pinwheel calculator in 1685 and invented the Leibniz wheel, used in the arithmometer.

He occupies a prominent position for having developed differential and integral calculus independently of Isaac Newton. His notation has been widely used ever since it was published.  The foundation of all modern-day computers has also been refined by him because of binary number system.

Mr Leibniz is also credited for stating the first modern formula for pi.

In philosophy, Mr Leibniz is most noted for his conclusion that our Universe is, in a restricted sense, the best possible one that God could have created, an idea that was often lampooned by others such as Voltaire.

He wrote and major contributions in the fields of philosophy, politics, law, ethics, theology, history, and philology.

Despite all this, he spent his final years away from the intellectual circles of the world after Scottish mathematician John Keill accused him of plagiarising Isaac Newton’s work on calculus.

He died at the age of 70 in Hanover in 1716.

Cooking Gas Price Raised By Rs 55. Fall In Rupee A Factor

New Delhi:

Subsidised cooking gas price was hiked by Rs 2.71 per cylinder today as a result of tax impact of base price rising due to spurt in international rates and fall in rupee.

Subsidised LPG with effect from midnight tonight will cost Rs 493.55 in Delhi, a statement issued by Indian Oil Corp (IOC) said.

Oil firms revise LPG price on 1st of every month based on average benchmark rate and foreign exchange rate in the previous month.

“The increase is mainly on account of GST on the revised price of Domestic Non-Subsidised LPG,” the statement said.

As a result of higher global rates, the price of Non-Subsidized LPG at Delhi will increase by Rs 55.50 per cylinder.

“The balance Rs.52.79 (Rs.55.50 minus Rs.2.71) is being compensated to the customer by increase in subsidy transfer to their bank account. Accordingly, the subsidy transfer in customer’s bank account has been increased to Rs 257.74 per cylinder in July 2018 as against Rs 204.95 per cylinder in June 2018. Thus the domestic LPG customer is protected against the increase in international prices of LPG,” the statement said.

Consumers buy non-subsidised or market price LPG after exhausting their quota of 12 subsidised cylinders of 14.2-kg each.

Virtual Identity Enabled Now To Protect Privacy, Says Aadhaar Authority UIDAI

New Delhi:

The Aadhaar-issuing authority UIDAI today said it has made virtual ID or VID system operational with its authentication user agencies, which have migrated to VID and UID token. The Virtual ID is a 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number.

The Unique Identification Authority of India has also classified its user agencies as “global” and “local” for providing authentication facility for VID through UID token and limited know-your-customer process.

Telecom companies and e-sign provider user agencies not using API version 2.5 and e-KYC API 2.5 starting July 1 will be charged 20 paise for every transaction, a statement said.

However, as an incentive to speed up the migration process to VID (via API 2.5), the UIDAI has decided that in case a user agency has fully migrated to APIs 2.5 by July 31, then the authentication transaction charges imposed for the period July 1-31 will be waived off.

Also, for all the other authenticated user agencies or AUAs including banks, it has been decided that they will migrate to VID and UID token using auth API 2.5 and e-KYC API 2.5 by August 31.

In case of any failure, the UIDAI will be free to take actions under the Aadhaar Act including the imposition of financial disincentives and termination of license keys.

“It has been observed that a number of AUAs have already migrated to production environment using APIs 2.5 for VID implementation and most of the remaining AUAs have tested VID and UID Token in pre-production environment APIs 2.5. We are requesting with these agencies to fully migrate to production environment by the stipulated date,” said Dr Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO, UIDAI.

He said the VID is a critical security measure for protecting residents’ privacy and their Aadhaar numbers. With the introduction of Virtual ID, an Aadhaar holder will have an option of not sharing his or her Aadhaar number and can generate a Virtual ID to share with AUAs to perform Aadhaar-based authentication.

The Internet Hearts Lisa Haydon’s Pic With Son Zack And So Do We

New Delhi:

Actress Lisa Haydon trends again for sharing a photo with her one-year-old son Zack on Instagram. The actress-model Instagrammed a photo of herself in swimwear with Zack in her arms and had the best caption ever to add. “My love,” she wrote and her Instafam just cannot get over the simplicity and the gorgeousness of the frame. “Such a blissful moment,” read a comment on her feed while another added: “You are one hell of inspiration for us!” Within months after Zack was born, Lisa shed post pregnancy weight and resumed her work commitments. Lisa has chronicled Zack’s growing up on Instagram one picture at a time. Meanwhile, “nice”, “awesome” and “cute” are also some of the comments we spotted on her post.

Here’s one of baby Zack and mom Lisa. The caption speaks a thousand words.

A post shared by Lisa Haydon (@lisahaydon) on

There’s not been a single time when the Internet has not taken notice of Lisa Haydon’s Instagram activities, featuring Zack. She recently trended a great deal after posting a beach-side photo, in which she can be seen soaking up the sun on the beach, with Zack curled up on her lap.

Lisa wrote an emotional post on her son’s first birthday last month. “My baby turned one on the 17th. Felt so emotional reminiscing a year ago when he was born – 7:57 am. We wake up at 6 most mornings and Zack sleeps till 8 am,” read a part of her post.”

After Zack was born, Lisa opened up about juggling duties of being a mother and a professional and told IANS: “It is pretty straightforward. It comes down to really good health. When I am at work, I am at work and I rationalise that in my own head because I love my job and I am a working mom. And when I go home, I try to be the best mom I could possibly be and give them all my attention and time and focus. That’s the only way I can balance it – give 100 per cent where you are at that moment.”

Lisa Haydon, who was seen in a supporting role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, continues to make appearances in advert assignments. She was last seen as a host and judge in Top Model India.
